Traveling (2)

OOC: Second night of traveling here. Not as detailed as the first one, but meh, it happens. My muse is seriously running low right now, which totally sucks, but I'll make do with what I got. Big Grin Anyhoo...yeah. Here it is. She is now right near the border of Cercatori D'arte on the Dhalia de Mai side of the map.

Waking up the next morning was very hard for the little brown wolf. Her entire body was stiff and sore, and to add to that, her fur was dried in odd directions, causing her to itch all over. Huffing in annoyance, she stood slowly and clenched her jaws against the pain as she shook her body, getting the thick dark fur straightened out properly. The raining had stopped during the night and now that the sun was peeking through the three tops, it was glittering off of the puddles and little streams created by the torrential downpour. It was really quite a beautiful sight, the soft glow from the shining bounding off the leaves and making the entire forest seem a little brighter than it normally would be.

The sounds of life bloomed from all directions. A mouse skittering under the dead leaves a few feet away, squirrels climbing through the trees, a few deer about fifty yards away in another little clearing and the sound of a rabbit’s heart beating close by. Tawny yawned largely and made sure her satchel was wrapped over her shoulders and neck, keeping it securely tucked close to her body as she began to walk again. About ten feet from her sleeping spot she dipped her head down to lap at a little pool of fresh water, drinking her fill before the rabbit leapt out from the bushes and took off right in front of her. Yipping softly, the wolf gave chase.

Her tongue lolled out from the side of her mouth as she ran, loping comfortably after the little frightened creature. She hoped to catch it, but wouldn’t be disappointed if she missed, not particularly hungry at the moment. Twenty minutes of chasing and she was done, panting heavily and stumbling over her own feet through the underbrush. Good thing was, she was a fast runner and had probably managed to cover at least two or three miles, if not four or five with just that small spurt of enjoyed energy.

Deciding to take a break, she flopped over onto her side and rolled in the wet leaves, getting the scent of the Earth rubbed into her fur and flesh. Doing this made it marginally harder for bigger predators and other wolves and canines to track her down. It was a skill she learned from watching little prey creatures skuttle around the forest on a daily basis. When traveling alone things often got boring and she had nothing better to do. So when she saw the weasel, deep in the Canadian forests, roll itself in mud and murky rain water, she tried following to see what it was doing. It had been very difficult for her nose to pick up any scent from the normally stinky creature.

Ten minutes of resting and then she was up and moving again, her paws hitting the ground in a steady rhythm, taking her further and further away from the place she had called home for the past few weeks. She was walking rather fast, trying to conserve energy but at the same time get some distance between her and the place she’d slept the night before. There was no desire to be followed somehow by another forest dweller, she was afraid there would be a few encounters on this trip that she did not want. Not things that would be any fun at all.

By nightfall Tawny was confident that she had traveled a good long distance and began searching for someplace to sleep for the night. She sniffed around for a while and sighed, feeling that the same thing was going to happen like the night before. After a while of looking and finding nothing, she finally just curled up against the base of a tree with big roots, hiding her face under her paws as sleep took her brain away into the clouds.
