She was on the edge of the world, at the ends of the earth itself. Before her, the bay stretched forward as far as her eyes could see. She knew there were lands across the waters -- she had walked upon them, after all -- but she could not see them. She saw only water, black as onyx. The strange coast of Salsola was foreboding, rock faces looming up at impossible heights from the waters. These were not sandy, kindly beaches where one might sunbathe. In the night, the Salsolian coast seemed even more dangerous than in the day. Though they had been besieged by fog for most of the day, at least there had been light to play upon the water.

She had not desired this land for its beauty, however. Though Salsola's claim did have its sharp ruggedness, a beauty of its own sort, she had desired this land for its isolation, its position. They could cross these waters, and end up on the mainlands -- either of them. She could loop around Inferni from the water, if only they had boats. They were tucked into their own corner, however, and none of the other packs seemed to be avid seafarers -- she had nothing to fear from an attack on Salsola's beaches. Even if the other groups did have boats of their own, Salsola's harsh coastline would prove difficult to attack.

Seated on her haunches, the hybrid pondered these things, forcibly turning her attention away from her children. They were joy and curse both -- there were four gorgeous youths, daughters who would grow to be strong and proud and all she could imagine. But there was one more, one dark cloud hanging over her sun. Shibboleth would not live to see adulthood, she thought -- Shibboleth was lucky to breathe, still. Though the coyote attempted to yank her thoughts away from her children and Shibboleth in particular, they drifted continually back to that subject.

I can’t stop these drunk posts :O sowwyyy
Words: 352

The yearling had spent the day cleaning her new home, determined to spruce it up a little each day. The wolf hadn’t much desire to do it quickly, because she had no reason to. She was also incredibly lazy and the wolf didn’t really care that her new room in the ruins was a mess. Fresh air was what she needed, though, and companionship was also a must. Magnolia crept outside, trying her best to not go crazy. She couldn’t handle being alone in such a vast land of silence anymore.

Something stirred in the darkness around her, and the Associate whipped around to see who was there. Curious, Maggie let the figure move a ways away before she followed it. The only dark creature in this land that she knew of was Eris, and the animal that moved before her looked hauntingly like her Auxiliary. A spiral-shaped scar gave her identity away. Magnolia smiled, and nimbly stalked her leader as she crept further and further away from the ruins. She knew this was a bad idea, but she did it anyway. Being young had that effect on most decisions.

The dark woman brought Maggie to the beach, on the western side where she had never been to before. Magnolia hung back, barely able to see the troubled Auxiliary. The silver wolf had no knowledge of her puppies or any other current drama in the pack, so she knew not of the trouble plaguing her beautiful mentor’s face. It must be difficult being in the position she was. But Eris was strong, and Magnolia was not. They were two very different women, and Maggie hoped she could learn a lot from the ebony woman.

“Eris?” the silver wolf called out from the shadows after a time. She knew eventually her scent would betray her hideout, and figured it would be best to let Eris know she was there. The four-legged girl stepped forward awkwardly towards her beloved leader, tail very much tucked between her legs. She didn’t want to spook her only ally in this spooky land.

They would need to be dealt with. Something had to be done, and the sable-hued woman did not think herself capable of doing what needed doing. Her mind knew the logical answer, but her heart would not so much as hear it. It was the very same one Larkspur had whispered to her, the very same principle upheld in Eterne. Blood to strengthen blood and cull the weak all at once. But Shibboleth was hers...

The hybrid remained stone-still only a moment longer, as a distant voice called for her attention. Her head twisted and she peered through the darkness with that sharp gaze of green-yellow flame, seeking the speaker. A paler shadow crept toward her, body and tail speaking submission, and the hybrid recognized the shock of purple on the younger woman's head. Maggie. The coyote thought of the glittering necklace, the gift she had received as Maggie's price for entrance and acceptance to Salsola. She did not wear it at this moment, but she knew where it was, tucked safely amongst her prized possessions.

Maggie, she said, her voice warm as the night air hanging around them. Come and sit with me, she invited, turning her head back to the sea. It was not a command, though the pallid canine might misconstrue it as such.

So lulz I forgot they were supposed to braid their hair and be all girly together so if you still want them to do that lemme know! I was gonna say I’d have Magz shift to her optime form but… she has a Mohawk. And you can’t really braid those, lulzzzderp.

Magnolia hadn’t been turned away or ignored, and the young girl’s heart raced with that knowledge. She was so happy that Eris didn’t have a shadow of irritation on her beautiful face when Maggie called out her name. Instead, the Auxiliary responded to Magnolia with warmth and affection. She was trying to be careful since she was so much higher ranked, but it was hard to contain her glee as the yearling crept into the moonlight and walked slowly over to her leader’s side. She had a beam on her face that couldn’t be erased by anything, save the depressed look on the sable woman’s face. She thought that Eris would be a woman who would attempt to stay always positive, always ahead of the curve. But now those preconceived notions went away. Magnolia’s smile turned into a pout as she looked at Eris.

“You look so sad,” the associate said meekly, her once-radiant face full of worry. She adored Eris, and seeing her in such a state was not something Magnolia enjoyed. “Is everything alright?” The woman wasn’t even sure if she was breaking any rules by being so forward, but at the moment she didn’t particularly care. She wanted her Auxiliary to be happy, even if it meant Maggie was her sounding board to her problems.

The young girl turned away from her friend then, jade eyes taking in the vast ocean before them. For someone so young, Magnolia had experienced a lot and had faced a lot of strife. She knew pain (though damaged children were something she was foreign to) and hoped she could give the Auxiliary words of comfort for what she was going through. She might have been young, but she hoped that Eris didn’t count that against her. She was only there to help.

(304) d'aww - they could still groom each other, maybe laters! someone could bring a comb/brush. c: i thought this one would be about her telling mags to go nab some info on cdm and babysitting - later we could do a thread where eris comes back after mags has been watching le kidlets and they go girls-night-out or something? XD ♥

Company was distraction; conversation was irrelevant thought to that brooding issue. The sable-shaded woman might have welcomed her mother to come and speak to her in that moment (perhaps, if it hadn't been such a grievous breach of Salsolian borders for the old woman to visit). The paler canine came forward to The Auxiliary's side, and the hybrid woman spared a long sideways glance at the woman, though the look was quickly broken as The Associate spoke. Her chartreuse eyes turned back toward the sea, focusing there as if something intensely interesting floated in the water. Nothing but moonlight danced on the waves, however, and the hybrid watched the play of light without so much as a hint of intrigue.

I worry for my children, she said, flatly, cryptically. She had been careful before, and as heavy as the burden was, she cared if the world knew what had gone wrong in the den under the ground. She believed Larkspur blamed her for Shibboleth. Perhaps he was right to blame her, but the sable-shaded woman would not admit that yet. This world is dangerous, she said, nodding her muzzle toward the ocean. Dangers lurked there for her children, and she would not allow Wretch to happen over again. These were her children, and they would not be taken from her, sick and twisted or not.

Salsola is strong, though, and it will protect them, she added, a faint smile on her coal lips. There was strength and belief in her voice, but weariness, too. She had raised Pandemic and Salvia, and two had been a chore enough, even with Larkspur's help. Four -- or five, if Shibboleth lived -- would be more than she could fathom. Even with a pack behind her, the task was daunting, and Eris worried for herself, too. Could she balance leadership and her family? She did not know, but she would abandon neither.

:OOOOO I thought since Magz wasn’t trying for that co-rank anymore she wouldn’t do that! BUTTTTT she’s in CdM RIGHT NAO so she can grab some infoz for Eris! Big Grin ‘Sall good. Oh and Eris needs to tell her to undergo Cotona too :3 <33

Poor Eris the silver woman thought, as her sable-tiped tail wrapped around her fragile body. The woman clearly was undergoing something stressful and she wasn’t sure exactly what Eris was getting at. Of course the world was a confusing and sometimes horrifying place, but that was all part of growing up. Magnolia had been terrified far too many times in her short life already. She had been abandoned, ignored, used, and forgotten about. She thought Salsola could fix that and give her a place to call home, but even that failed. Magnolia wondered idly if Eris was as lonely as she was, sometimes, despite being a leader and having a family here.

“I just saw Salvia for the first time since arriving here, she seemed very well,” Maggie said simply, giving Salvia’s mother reassurance. “She will be fine here. Pandemic too, he looked perfectly happy at the dinner,” that was a horrifying night. Chills still went down her spine when the Associate saw the now-mute slave around the ruins. “I think they will fare very well here, you have nothing to worry about.” Magnolia, of course, was unaware of the new litter of puppies Eris had just given birth to.

“Salsola is indeed a very strong place. Very …different to the places I grew up in,” she said, a hint of irritation dancing in her words. Dahlia de Mai and Cour des Miracles were almost like heaven in comparison to the bleak, damaged land she now resided in.

OH. well, i am fucking stupid. XD up to you, broseph - the horse info would still be useful, but you don't have to nab!

The sable-hued woman had no inkling as to whether she could foster the pack and raise her children correctly. Larkspur would help, but Eris knew the education of the children was her duty. Beyond the very useful and very real skills needed to survive in the world, Larkspur could not teach them. He lacked the cleverness, perhaps lacked the intelligence. It had been physical strength she desired in Larkspur, not a sharp mind. She had donated that to her children on her own.

The sable woman listened to the other canine speak of Pandemic and Salvia; it was not her elder children she worried for, however. She smiled, though it was a faint thing, barely visible on her dark muzzle in the night. I can only hope my new children grow as strong as their elder siblings, she said, rolling a shoulder. Nothing was guaranteed in this world; fate might have decreed long ago that her Shibboleth was destined for death, or her Harrow would go tumbling from a cliff, or her Artemisia was to drown. Eris could do nothing to alter that which was etched into stone.

The hybrid listened to the woman speak of Salsola, and she tilted her head, curious. What would you change? she asked, curious as to whether Maggie understood the position of Salsola's territory, the tactical necessity of closing themselves off from the rest of the world. The Salsola she envisioned was far more established and functional than the Salsola that actually existed, true enough; there were leagues to go before Salsola was the wonderous place she envisioned in her head.

Words: 418

Magnolia was naïve that was for sure; forgetful, too, apparently. When Eris and the Associates scouted the island off the coast of their home she had seen that Eris was showing signs of being pregnant and had promptly forgotten it. But luckily Eris was kind and didn’t make the young Associate feel like an idiot or even hurting her for not remembering. But the news of Salsola’s first litter lit up Maggie’s face, regardless.

“Oh Eris you must be so happy and proud! A new litter for Salsola to love and watch over. They have you as a mother, of course they will be strong,” she said warmly, trying her hardest to bring a touch of cheerfulness to her Auxiliary’s face. “I’d love to see them sometime, and if you ever need a break feel free to drop them off with me, I do love children,” It was such a funny thing for Magnolia to say, considering she was still a child herself. In a month she would be a year old, though. Despite her physical age Magnolia felt far older than an almost-yearling should. She had gone through immense tragedy in her short pathetic life. Magnolia had also abandoned the only other child she had known, her half-brother Jiva. She left before he could even be by himself without Niro worrying. She pouted. Hopefully Eris would never know of the family she abandoned to join her own.

But then Eris asked a question the young girl wasn’t expecting and she found herself at a loss for words. “Change?” she repeated, jade seeking yellow, anxious. After all the abuse she had suffered in this area the last thing she expected was for her leader to ask her opinion on how things were done here. Was it a trap? No, Eris was too kind for that. Still, Magnolia worried, ears flattening beside her Mohawk.

She decided to tell the one truth she knew couldn’t hurt her. She knew nothing of Sirius or his leadership skills and Eris knew that she absolutely adored both her and Larkspur. She had nothing to complain about the leaders, but the other members she wasn’t too sure of. “I…I wish our pack mates were nicer,” she said faintly, ears flattening even more. “I feel like a nobody here,” after being treated like a princess, it was hard to go back to feeling like you were worth no more than the ground beneath your paws.

(562) no idea where rambly-ass post came from sryyyy

The dark woman did not immediately respond to the compliments; her chartreuse eyes did not move from the ocean, the moonlight shimmering and dancing upon the waves still. She did, however, take special note of The Associate's offer, and this was considered in her mind. Magnolia could not see Shibboleth... no, that would not do. The other children, though? They were healthy and strong, and could not yet speak of their injured sibling. Perhaps she would be lucky and they would not even remember the baby with the hole in her belly.

The hybrid turned to the other canine with a half-smile, and she nodded her head. I could use the extra help. Larkspur is good, but Pandemic and Salvia are young yet, and need me sometimes, too, she said. Your help would be appreciated, the hybrid said, speaking the truth. She did not think raising children was ever and easy task. With two older ones and a younger one with questionable longevity, she would need all the assistance and strength she could muster -- and then some.

The coyote listened in earnest to her companion, nodding silent encouragment for Maggie to speak freely. The dark woman was entirely unfamiliar with concepts such as free speech, but had she knowledge of them, she might have dashed the ideal to pieces on the rocks. Eris did not believe it was always worthwhile to let one's tongue loll freely; in many cases, silence seemed to be the more prudent option, and The Auxiliary did not always believe the proles understood when to hold the tongue and let it go free. In such cases, it was good to have control of the tongues of one's subjects.

Now, however, there was little harm in letting Maggie speak her piece. It did not guarantee the words would penetrate the leadership's decisions or mindset, certainly -- however, Eris did not wish to appear that she discounted the thoughts of her fellows. She had felt unaccounted for in Inferni, and she knew how this felt. So, even if she were not truly going to make sweeping adjustments to the style of leadership within Salsola, she would put forth an appearance of caring and listening. And who the hell knew -- perhaps she would just learn sometime.

So, she listened, and when the other canine was finished speaking, the hybrid could not disguise a small smile nor could she staunch a short laugh. My dear Maggie, you have my favor. Surely this makes you more than nobody. Denver and Jeremiah were also personally known to the she-wolf, along with Liliya -- however, it was her job to look after the pack's new recruits, too. Still, she did not trust Denver quite so much as Maggie, and she thought Jeremiah might still turn against Salsola's ideals if he should find them completely repugnant, in the end, or ended up unable to reconcile them with that wretched book of his. She had known Maggie longer than any of the three, and Larkspur liked her. That did count for something in Eris's eyes, for the man who called himself her mate was not particularly trusting. Right now you might feel like nothing, but you'll see. Stay with us and you'll become part of us, more so than you are now, the hybrid said. I promise it.

Sorry for sucking and taking forever. Life has been a bit of a bitch lately x_x. also, very pretty post :3 mine’s pretty blah, sorry – it’s funny how quickly you get rusty after a 2 week absence. :c

Eris was a goddess in the young female’s eyes and watching her Auxiliary listen and take her words into consideration made the young girls heart swell and flutter. And Eris wanted her to help look after her new puppies! This run-in was definitely going in a way that Magnolia hadn’t expected it to. Her black-tipped tail wagged in excitement on the ground, dirt getting lodged in her fur. Maggie couldn’t help but giggle in excitement and give her leader a smile. How exciting! How many of them are there? Magnolia vaguely remembered staring at Eris’ body when they were scouting; she didn’t look too heavy with new life. Even one puppy to love and adore would be enough for the Associate, though.

Eris’ words were a form of security, the kind of thing Magnolia would remember again on a rainy, miserable day when she was angry at the land she called home. You are kind, Eris, was all the silver wolf said, entranced by the dark woman by her side.Thank you for taking me in. I… I do like it here, and I appreciate all that you've done for me, she wasn’t sure how to say this, her word failed her for a moment -But... I just miss my family, sometimes. Salsola was her family now, but seeing Foxglove brought tears to her eyes for days afterwards. She missed her sweet sister, who had gone away and come back a gypsy. Magnolia had stayed and become no one.

(363) i still suck though :3

The silvery woman's positive reaction warmed Eris, but there was still that lurking, dark cloud. Shibboleth. The coyote woman wished so desperately for the girl to survive, but she did not have the medical knowledge to fix such an abomination, if indeed it could be fixed. She would not allow anyone to see the child, fearing their reaction if they were to see what had come of Eris Eternity's body, and so she was between two rock cliffs, dead center in a canyon ten miles long. These thoughts were again shoved violently away, the composure she kept before the girl teetering dangerously on edge. Five! Five! Five, but one is sick, and she will die, the coyote wanted to say, but she clutched this answer somewhere in her belly, coiling impossibly tight around the outburst that wished so desperately to wrench itself free and explode out of her mouth.

She did not know it, but a shade had passed over her face, a momentary look of doubt and pain; this had passed just as quickly as it came, but it remained nonetheless, and when the hybrid did again speak, she was not at all cognizant of her own fleeting expression just a moment ago. Four, she answered, now smiling something that appeared to be wholly genuine and completely unperturbed. Ataxia, Artemisia, Harrow, and Solanaceae. All girls, the coyote said, laughing quietly. Pandemic and Larkspur swim in a sea of girls. The sable-shaded woman shifted her seat and considered the other woman's words, seemingly for the first time, and shrugged her shoulders, peering at Maggie curiously.

You give Salsola strength, and it thanks you in return. I thank you, too, she said, nodding her head as if to reinforce the statement. Go, girlie, see your family -- cover your scent of Salsola by rolling in plants that smell strongly after you've bathed in the ocean. Tell them nothing of us -- you've gone to Anathema or you're running around alone for a while, the coyote said. I have no intent to keep you from seeing your blood. I know how important that is, she said, her smile quite genuine.

Such beautiful names, for beautiful children I’m sure, she thought idly what Eris’ brood looked like; she concluded they must all be dark children as they were made by two dark creatures. The idea fascinated the girl, knowing that somewhere in the pack lands were little copies of her two idols. Oh, please let me see them soon! Not only did she want to appeal to Eris for giving her some free time, but she dearly wanted to return to her childhood when she could play with anyone for any extended amount of time and not have adult things to attend to. She was an adult now, almost a whole year old, and playtime for her was few and far between these days. She still acted as a pup, and probably would for the rest of her life… but for now, she was stuck in a world of maturity and bitterness. It wasn’t exactly Magnolia’s style, but she would have to deal with it until she was more settled in.

Silvery ears flattened at the mention of her family from Eris’ mouth. The girl sighed at the thought of trekking all the way back to the kingdom and seeing her father.I will, she said numbly, not entirely sure how her father could stand to see her again after all she did to him. But as Eris gave her instructions to cover her scent, Magnolia’s mouth tensed and she looked down at her feet, suddenly very embarrassed.I.. fuck she thought, knowing she had already screwed up by telling her sister where she lived. Foxglove came … to the edge of the borders… my father had told her that I lived in the north, and she came looking for me… Magnolia sighed again, pawing at the dirt beneath her.I…I was so shocked to see her that the thought of covering up my scent didn’t even occur to me… she….I told her about Salsola. Finally, Maggie got the words out. She tightly closed her eyes, anticipating the punishment she would receive. I’m so sorry. I thought she was dead.

Swore I wrote this post, or part of it... oh well. Blah blah blah, rambly.

The sable coyote smiled at the complement to her children's names. Most were named in the D'Angelo tradition, using English words with meaning. Her Solanaceae and her Artemisia, however, had been named for plants. All had been drawn from books, as neither Eris nor Larkspur possessed an education so deep it touched on proper Latin names of plants.

Of course, the hybrid said, her tail giving a lazy wag; her mood had improved with Maggie's compliments and sweet behavior, as such reverence usually did. It inflamed Eris's heart to see one who so lionized her, her of all canines! What would they think of her if they knew Sirius had been the one to teach her to hunt, and that such education had taken place only early on in this year? Her smile widened at that, for she knew her secret was safe with their Boss. They'll be a month soon enough. When the time is right, I will come for you, the coyote said, mentally adding: when Shibboleth passes.

Eris considered Maggie more sharply as she spoke, the smile disappearing and giving way to a face of neutrality, her usual expression: reserved and entirely placid, yet contemplative and possessing a curiosity of razor sharpness. The gaze indicated she might break into song or break out the knives at any moment, though Eris generally did not entertain either extreme of behavior. Instead, her reactions were generally far more tempered, proper and befitting a lady of the pack and an Auxiliary. There was sharpness in her gaze nonetheless as she leveled it at Maggie, though it lacked in fiery anger, there was admonishment lurking there nonetheless.

We could not have expected to remain a secret forever. What did you tell her of us? Some secrets are more damaging and better kept close, while others... not so much, said the dark wolf, her tone grave. In truth, she didn't give a rat's ass whether the world knew of their population and numbers -- it was their prized culture she feared for. Emulation of it was inevitable, she thought -- when the others learned of their secretive, strict model and saw how flawlessly it performed, they would adopt and adapt, no doubt. The longer she could prevent such a thing, the better.

Table by Tawny!

I only told her that I was bound to Salsola and that this was my home now. My sister became a gypsy, and even though she didn’t understand why I chose to live here, she respected my decision. I told her no secrets or anything of importance. I wouldn’t have told her the pack name, but she just came as such a shock I didn’t think to censor my words before her. Maggie swallowed nervously, suddenly hunched in shame. Maggie never would have dreamt to tell her sister about the Last Supper, or the spiral scars that marked members of the family. Foxglove would have been horrified at the thought.

Even though Maggie didn’t technically break any rules, she wanted to make sure that Eris knew Magnolia was a good Associate, and wouldn’t make the same mistake. She wanted to make sure Eris knew that Magnolia was here for life and she wanted to be in her Auxiliary’s good graces. She didn’t mind sucking up to her superiors. Not that Eris had ever felt like a superior, she was definitely more of a friend than a boss to the silver woman. Maggie decided that it would be good to talk about pack values, and how eager the yearling was to get involved after her little mishap. Magnolia wanted to make her loytalty very apparent.

How do I go about getting one of those? the Associate asked quietly, motioning to Eris’s shoulder. I want you to know I will be here for life, and I would lay my life down for Salsola. She knew that she wasn’t highly valued, but she would do everything in her power to change that even if it meant bearing an ugly scar on her body for the rest of her life.

Sol-ana-SHAY I suppose. X3 Also, can haz wrap up after dis? O: You post once more or archivey? D; <3 Also, the scars Salsola gets basically look like dis: here. c: Mags is obviously welcome to a spiral, too, derpderp, but the symbol there is the important part. I can edit my post or we can assume they were talking about the Hand scar all along, either way, whatevs. <3 We could fade-out on her explaining the mark and where she found it in a book, what it means, etc? And her own eventual plan to gets it on her own hands. XD

The hybrid listened, mild concern still masking her face. Her ears were pricked forward, but there was no outright anger on the dark face; her chartreuse eyes remained thoughtful and did not explode into fire. She nodded when Maggie had seemed to finish, but did not speak for a moment, still thinking this over. It did not take long before she rolled a shoulder in a mild shrug. There are far worse things the world could know, she said, dismissively; that would be all the concern she would give to the matter.

I know you understand the seriousness of keeping our true secrets, she said, leaning forward to offer a light touch of her muzzle on the hunched shoulders. It was not as if Maggie had proclaimed their living space. Eris trusted the pale Associate -- it was Larkspur, after all, who had recommended her, and Maggie did not have the easiest time finding her way to Salsola, after all. She would not betray the pack. Eris might seek further consultation by her fires and before her altar tonight, however.

The hybrid woman smiled faintly at the mention of her tattoo. This mark was given to me in Eterne -- it is a mark to strengthen one's spiritual vision, she said. You surely might adorn this to your body, yes, but the mark of Salsola is one I don't yet bear, she added, a hint of sadness in her voice. I did not want to risk the process while pregnant or while my children still drink milk, she said. It was sound and true reasoning, but the sable woman genuinely regretted her lack of Salsola's marks. She lifted a paw and scratched a crude imitation of the mark in the dirt, nodding toward it. This is our mark, she said her voice soft with adoration for the thing this little symbol stood for.

>________> You can archive this after you read it ^^ <3 and lets assume they were talking about the hand scar, cause that’s the one magz wanted!

The lack of punishment or anger in Eris towards her little Associate was confusing. She did something wrong, but was very grateful she wouldn’t be harmed for her lapse in judgment. Eris was wise, and surely knew when to make a big deal out of something and when to not. Magnolia was grateful for her choice. Eris drew the mark of Salsola into the dirt, and the Associate listened to her superior speak. She was very aware of Eris’ spritiual inclinations, so that mark made sense. But Maggie shared her Auxiliary’s sadness that neither of them had it. It was dainty and would look good on cut into their skins. Magnolia looked at Eris, eyes wide with interest. “I would love one of those, Eris.” The mark stood for so very much; Maggie would even be happier if both women could be marked at the same time. Eris was truly the only thing Magnolia stood for and had any sort of loyalty towards except maybe her sister.
