As the night comes in

kansas, few days after parley

The news his sister had sent had trickled down to his ears. It made the young man cry at first, questions welling like tears and pouring from his maw. But no one had any. Alder vaguely remembered running from the cabin, the moments a blur of emotion as he ran full speed to the stables. In the dark of night the horses screamed and kicked at their stall walls in fright as the predictor ruthlessly paraded through their home without warning. He stopped at Hawthorn's door, the black horse melting into the shadow of his stall, white blaze all that could be seen. But when Alder opened the door the massive Shire moved quickly out and without a word of high or low speech he mounted the horse and kicked his heels into his sides.

The air was cold, whipping at his short mane and the ink black mane of the stallion. The territory passed by him, and he took the trails he knew were the easiest to navigate in the dark. Alder had made the trip countless times, but never had he with such fury. The giant wolf kicked the horse again as they reached the tree less hills that separated his home from that of his mother. And as he neared, the faint smell of the Dreaming world touching his nose, he fought not to break down like a witless pup without his mother.

He had never done something so dangerous, for the horse was beginning to fail and the chance for him miss-stepping was greater then ever in the darkness. His pelt glistened with sweat and his mouth gasped for air. But they continued. His heart began to pound in his head as he neared Crimson Dreams, 'Thorn slowing from fatigue. The trees made it impossible to gallop, but Alder followed the path that had brought him back home a hundred times before at a pace faster then he would ever recommend on horseback.

His mother was gone, stolen by the AniWayans that she had always supported. Alder gritted his teeth as he thought of it, enraged more so then he ever had been at the idea. Captured, taken. Just thinking the words made him growl loudly. He needed answers, needed to hear that Anu was home or that she was coming home. Or he would go get her. His lips quivered with anger, the hot blooded emotion one he had never known before.

Sorry for the ramblings. And I will be much faster from now on. Just had a busy past couple days.

Kansas had never in his wildest thoughts expected something like this to happen. Not here, where he and his family indulged in warm safety. Now he understood what had happened, but he could still remember the intense uncertainty and horror he had felt on the night of the raid. He could not forget the blood, the frenzy of violence, nor could he forget that he had almost lost his daughter to them. Worse was that now, his friend and leader had been taken along with one of their pack members, and so far AniWaya showed no signs of relinquishing them despite Savina's fairness.

The ebony matron had ordered more patrolling, and as much as he feared encountering trouble, Kansas had been spending much more of his time encircling the Dreamer's territory, perpetually Secui just in case an intruder dared cross the line. He had never manifested the form so much in his life, and he did not like it, grimacing whenever he took to it.

He had begun to lose sleep again, yet unlike his depression of this year, he could not spend those hours playing music or reading. Instead, he changed to his Secui form and headed for the borders. He missed being able to relax, but he did this willingly, without a second of hesitation. It was what Savina had asked, and what his pack needed right now.

These were the circumstances tonight. He lay with his eyes wide open as if to quell the barrage of terrible images from his mind. Silently, he got up, went downstairs, and shifted into his most intimidating form. He headed east, where he had not patrolled before. If there was trouble tonight, perhaps they would try to trick the Dreamers by going around and through Shiloh Hills, invading from there. The ivory-furred male was noisier than desired, but not too much. He had learned to adjust to this form, though he would never move as gracefully as he did when he was Lupus.

The sound of hooves crashing though underbrush was unmistakable. Kansas froze, tensing, his ruff bristling with alarm. With his mind consumed by fear, his first thought was to send a warning call into the night air and flee, but with a few deep breaths he realized that would not be the most intelligent thing to do. He crouched near a tree and bush and watched the mounted canine's approach, nose twitching. It was his scent that made Kansas glad that he had chosen to stay.

The white halfling revealed himself to Alder, approaching carefully, wary that in this beastly form he might spook the gigantic horse. Alder, he breathed, obviously revealed.

^^

In their fast pace he had hardly seen the wolf approach. Alder drew his arms back along his sides, hands clenched to the strips of leather that held him to the horse's bridle. Hawthorn's head jarred down, and the movement cause him to halt in his step immediately. The Marshal looked at the white figure that had stepped out from the brush, his own name a whisper among the horse's whinny and his own gruff breathing and growls. 'Thorn's hooves finally found themselves planted on the ground, he even backed up a pace away from the wolf.

Blue eyes looked down at the face, and he dismounted from the massive horse and spoke. Kansas, I heard the news. He looked with a ferocity in a face that would naturally be much calmer, meeker. Hawthorn had regained his own composure, and shook his head before reaching down to investigate the new wolf for himself. It's true? My mother is gone? Alder questioned, accusation spilling from the corners of her mouth. Where had he been when the had come and plucked his guiding star from the sanctuary of Crimson Dreams??

are the gargoyles from my table gone ? 300+

Kansas stepped back when the horse began to move with alarm, lowering himself as much as he could without crouching entirely to the ground. Meanwhile the beast's rider had dismounted and drew nearer, where Kansas could clearly see the anger and distress distorting his features, his eyes. The meek Sadira did not move, his expression unchanging as Alder spoke. His glowing turquoise eyes swiftly met the horse when it had, to his relief, calmed itself, then without change closed in on the large werewolf who had in memory been a tiny pup. The ivory Secui's great chest trembled slightly with a sigh. Yes, but... please, believe there's hope, he said at once, his voice soft but rushed. He was not able to think of anything that might calm the sorrow-frought young wolf faster, fast enough to listen if he wasn't otherwise ready to.

They took her, but they haven't hurt her. At the raid, Crimson Dreams, eh, captured some of theirs. The night after, Savina tried to... to convince them into a trade, but they refused that. And your mother is still safe, but, Kansas swallowed, but his throat was unpleasantly dry. He was very wary of alarming Alder further, but the young boy had been affected directly by the crazed intruders, and he must know everything. I think there's war now.

He tried to imagine himself in Alder's exact place, aware that he had never known a connection with his mother that was so strong. We're... we're doing everything we can to get her back. Savina... isn't gonna stop until we do. At last, he was able to grin. After his mate's history with this kind of thing, he was sure it would come out her way. It was what comforted him the most, and he hoped that Alder would understand and be comforted, too.

yes, Sad but the blue is pretty!

He hadn't wanted to believe it before. The distance between the packs was far, enough that words would be lost and news distorted. Couldn't it be another? Couldn't it be someone else's mother that was missing? Alder could hardly stand when the man spoke the truth, supporting the things brought to him in the court. He could barely remain planted when he spoke a teaching Anu had given him when he was just a pup. Hope. He felt a deep burning in his chest, his heart breaking and simultaneously it felt like it was going to burst through his ribcage. Without her there was no hope. No honestly in the world, no understanding and no faith. He had learned to live away from her, but the vision of her always remained. She sat in the garden, tending to the blossoms, or she stood in the orchard picking apples. A smile on her face, eyes like water filled with contentment as she looked at him... Now she was in darkness.

All the male could do was remain still, or else his heart would burst.

War? She was a prisoner of war. He could not believe that she had not been hurt. And he could not believe that they had done all they could. Alder was nearing the point of exploding and at the same time imploding. He tried to hold his anger in, but the fury was so unfamiliar that it ripped past the grasps of his control as he yelled into the dark night, How could she? Speaking of Savina, though Alder only held respect of the alpha at this moment he did not have the clarity to understand. Trade? My mother is not something to be traded. Why didn't you fight for her? They should be dead for this, all of them! He yelled, not just thinking of Kansas, but the entire pack when he spoke the you. The fur on his neck and shoulders erect, fist clenched and fangs snarling.

And then, with hardly a second to pass he began to crumble, the exhale released by those enraged words deflating him. He couldn't breathe. She can't fight. he said frailly, sorrow in his tone. She would die is they tested her strength, in war it was the physical that won his mother was only strong in spirit and mind.

heheh. Smile 300+

Kansas' lip twitched as Alder spoke, his words tainted with anger. The pale Sadira had failed to ease the large werewolf's pain, and he understood why. He had watched Anu with her children, and though he never knew the words she had spoken to them, he was certain by the adoration all three of her boys (and especially Alder) had for their mother, that she had raised them in her quiet, loving way. Again he sighed, this time more softly. He knew Alder was not talking about him specifically when he asked why there had not been more urgent efforts to retrieve Anu, yet the surge of guilt for his own uselessness was inevitable. He had not sunk his fangs into even one of the invaders, but merely stood by Savina while the chaos flamed and then died down. They had almost succeeded in taking his daughter from him, and he would have remained helpless.

Kansas had left something very important out of his first explanation, although perhaps Alder already knew. We... we have prisoners, too, Alder, he spoke in a measured tone. They won't hurt your mother while some of theirs remain in Crimson Dreams. He paused, looking into the other's bright cobalt eyes, and nodded slowly. I agree... Th-they should suffer... and die, for what they've done. Kansas was still shocked by all of this, it had happened so quickly and without a hint of warning. He hated them for what they had done to his pack — his family. It was painted perfectly in the fury of Alder's expression. We are fighting for her. We'll... keep fighting, until they return her to us.

Though Kansas had no way of knowing how this would end, he had faith that the ending would come in favor of good, not the evil of the strange AniWayans. He believed that they would be conquered, brought to their knees, and banished from this world.

sorry for the wait!! <3

The necklace he wore grew heavy on his neck, it weighed him down as he heart began to break and his chest clenched and tightened. His hand went to the metal sun that he wore, that his mother had given him. It was all he had of her, and it would be all he ever did if she died in the AniWayan's grip. They fought, Kansas said the words. He thought for a moment; who had died on the Dreamer's side? Others could have passed, defending their home as well as their leaders and family. Alder looked away, eyes closed and he fought against the tears that thoughts of his mother brought him.

He began to shake his head. All the phases of grief flowed through him at once, denial, anger, sadness... He didn't know how to feel and what to think and he even had a hard time believing the white wolf. It was a horrible feeling, having his mother in this state and he felt incapable of digesting it. Who? Who do you have? His voice was solid, less enraged and not as deflated as it had once been. There was no one that was a valuable in his mind, there was no one that could ever be as important in his world. His hand moved away from the sun and back to his side were they both became fists, he then looked back to the blue eyes wolf. This was all impossible, impossible to believe and impossible to solve.
