kill me for the wait. backdated to August 29.

When she opened her eyes again Ever saw the moon. It was nebulous, shadowed by clouds stained with the dark of night. The moon, yet so amorphous, filled the window that was simply stuck facing the sea. That too, would have also been radiating the same unnatural sallow that the moon was if not for thrashing movement and animosity of the cloud’s umbrage.

Her first glimpse of that night had been when it was still fresh, the horizon burning a pale orange that began to fuse with the blackening marina. She had fallen into a painful doze, every preeminent writhe waking her instantly, instantly meaning by practice. Each conclusion of the day brought negligible rest, and although the pregnant lady’s drained expression had become almost permanent, she slept no more than any other night. This lasted for the customary two months. Moments when she woke, where there were many, Ever strained to keep quiet, gracious almost, for she was not sleeping alone. In fear she would wake him and find him grieving her own sting with her, she stayed up until she was sure she would not strike violently again. This plan never worked, but it worked the best.

The moon, now forcing a burden she would never had committed, was drawing her to its eye with its familiar haul. Disturbing Ezra would only cause her more distress, but this night felt different. She hadn’t slept more than a few pitiful slumbers, finding the moon her only friend more than usual in the dark. Now, as the covers felt anomalous around her cold form, the urge was, in fact, being committed.

With the door closed silently behind her, the luster-pelted woman set off as best as she could into the woods. It was as lonely and silent in the rich, murky emerald setting as an abandoned village. It was also dark, like everything else. However, Ever could have made it to the stable even if she were blind, which would have been a better alternative on that midnight. She was sore every day, now, finding even tender touches to be like daggers. So, it only made sense that she hadn’t ridden Saphraine since before the pregnancy. The word and thoughts that perused the idea sent a frightening ice all the way to her salient abdomen, and so she hurried to her oasis.

Upon arriving, Ever made as little effort as possible to get inside. Exertion was similar to death being released momentarily on her bones. But once indoors, she greeted familiar faces. Most companions were asleep, hardly stirring at her miniscule disturbance. Saphraine, of course, was not present, but his equivalent other, Petra, nickered a short greeting to his companion’s mate. The lady pressed herself against the buckskin horse’s stall and fell asleep almost instantly, wrapped in more comfort that was the barn rather than the old, abrasive blanket.

Finally, when her frosty ocean blue irises opened to whatever brightness was offered, it wasn’t the moon. Morning had come with a few hours rest at last. Almost out of habit, Ever stood and prepared to go to the barn. Even though, through her pregnancy, she had been working less and less. But when than bloat of her stomach carrying her unreal, yet unborn children, caught up with her, she felt sick. Fortunately, she hadn’t suffered much more than very mild forms of pregnancy affects while others, similar to her tenderness, raged out of control.

She went to leave immediately, but the first step sent her stumbling. The silver lady would have fallen if not for the prompt door to her left. Pain racked claws through her body for a lingering minute, before fading. Ever felt the illness aura again while adrenaline shot icy fear through her. Limping, all her usual docile grace gone, the girl escaped the confines of the stable aisle. The first tightening had made her numb, but now she lay against a tree close to the barn opening, and the sensation returned. Her damaged, petite bark was cut off by the pain. She knew she couldn’t make it back.

For the duration of Ever’s pregnancy, Ezra had always tried to be the best mate he could be. It was hard, at times, because he couldn’t fully comprehend the change that was going on in her body, but he was still there. Evers hormones raged out of control, she would sleep all too often, she would be in pain. He tried his best to understand but he couldn’t, really. She was frightened and he was frightened. This was all new to them. But he was still there with her every step of the way, even if she didn’t feel like he was. With this, he let her have her space when she needed it.

Another morning had broken with his mate missing, and from the moment he woke up, the male had panicked. She was so far along in her pregnancy that he didn’t think her leaving was the best idea. There was only one real place where she could be, a place she hadn’t visited in weeks. Ezra shot out of bed and tore after his mate’s scent leading him to the stables.

A pathetic sounding bark reached his husky ears and he knew it was her. She was hurt. Or was it time? Pure adrenaline sent the male flying through the air, secui limbs working as fast as they could. He panted, frantically looking for her in the heart of the woods. He couldn’t find her. The male continued running to the barn despite the protests in his limbs. He had never run this fast before, but then again this wasn’t a situation that occurred often in the hybrid’s life.

There. She lay crumpled on the forest floor, and Ezra shot over to her. My moon, he panted exhaustedly, quickly curling up by her side. W-what’s wrong? he could barely get the words out between the gasps for air. He was terrified and had no way to help her. He momentarily thought about bringing her back to the bungalow, but it was so far away and he knew he couldn’t carry her child-heavy body that far. This would have to do until she regained her strength or until the pups were born.

lala.

She wanted to scream, but she couldn’t. She wanted to move, but she couldn’t. The edges of her vision blurred every time another wave of pain battered her, so she closed her eyes tight and focused on the one thing she could do. Breathe. Each breath was forced out of her lungs with a vigor that could have drawn blood. Her body was curled to a point that the agony might not sting as much, but each flow made her flinch as best as she could during the heartbreaking minute. It didn’t take her long to distinguish the feeling.

She had not known how close she was to labor. Dim, Ever knew, but the thought that the one morning she had tried to reconstruct her life had been her day had not crossed her mind. If it had, she would have been better off closer to home. Blackness swam before her, pulsing in rhythm with the contractions as they only struck deeper and intolerable.

Ever wouldn’t have known Ezra was there if he had not spoken. Likely, she could have been attacked and not registered it until she was long dead. The hurting dulled out all of her senses and left her feeling broken and useless. She kept her ocean eyes closed as long as she could, probably a death wait for her mate on the other side of the blackness. So when she opened them, the world was too bright.

Ezra,”

The silver lady managed, her voice sounding dry and parched, as if she had been starved of water for weeks. She wanted to show him how pleased she was he was here, but couldn't manage that either.

I’m sorry … sorry, I’m sorry … I’m sorry,

She repeated, the pain cutting off her words and forcing the same ones out over and over again. Tears began streaming. Finally, it seemed. Ever wanted to be home, she wanted Ezra to take her there.

I want to go, Ezra … go home,

Ever yelped, her melodic voice thick with unshed tears. It wasn’t possible, she couldn’t make it. A strong soreness like no pain she had felt caused her request to turn in a scream. The scream wasn’t loud, but shrill and desperate and her dark hands clenched air soundlessly.

Okay,

Time slowed down and stopped entirely before the male. Ever tried to speak, but her feeble words didn’t even register. The hybrid was panicking, he felt like was watching her die right before his very eyes. In the back of his mind he knew the children were coming, and that he needed to take her to shelter. He couldn’t imagine carrying her that far away but he knew it was what he needed to do. Whether or not Ever survived this was up to him.

The man willed himself to shift as quickly as his body would allow, but with every passing second he felt like he was wasting time. He said nothing to her, instead silently focusing on the bones elongate and crack. His mind was mush, his body wasn’t moving fast enough. He wanted to scream, but no sound came out.

Finally, finally, finally the man was on two legs, and he scooped the woman up as delicately as he could. The hybrid gave his mate a reassuring lick, and took off as fast as he could. The summer wind whipped through their fur, and despite the warmth of the morning the male shivered. He could do nothing but run until his legs gave out.

He didn’t want to look down at her just in case he saw something he didn’t want to see. He couldn’t bear to see her face contorted in pain, it made a hole deep in his chest ache. His legs were protesting but he knew he had to keep going. Finally, the house came into view and the boy let himself breathe again. Sighing, he looked down at Ever and nuzzled her pale face. We’re here, love, he said quietly, finally slowing to a halt. If he wasn’t holding the most important thing in his life he would have surely collapsed.
