LOL A race?! You WANT to give Liam a heart attack, right? He fought for CdM a few days ago, give him a break! Kidding; short or not, it was an awesome post. =p ↔ 392 words

Halifax was indeed a big place – intimidating too with all of its large, towering structures. It felt as though they were looking down upon Liam and his new friend, watchful gazes daring them to do anything to harm the city already in ruins.

Liam knew it was a bit silly, but a part of him was expecting the buildings to collapse onto him if he touched something that didn't belong to him – good thing he wasn't the first in his pack to come here and take things that weren't necessarily his. Thieving felt wrong, but the more he thought about it the more he realized it wasn't stealing. He was taking useful items that no one else had found – items left behind by humans that had long since vanished from the lands. If no one was using them, they were sitting there waiting for someone to. Liam nodded to himself; yes, it was only right for him to take things and claim them as his own. But it was only a small part of him that debated such things. The larger part of him, the adventurous part, didn't care.

He didn't have much time to reflect on the matter though as Jackson put a new challenge into his head – one that involved focus and the use of his strong Optime legs. Liam smirked. Racing – he was good at that. “Aha!” he said with a smirk as he started running. At first he was a little behind Jackson, what with the black and white wolf-dog having had a bit of a head start, but after a while he caught up to Jackson.

He picked up his pace even more, his powerful legs working hard to take his body from point A to point B in the least amount of time. The cool autumn breeze blew through his dark brown mane, making the fur on his body stand on edge. His muscles ached a little, which slowed him down a tad but not enough for the competition to be non-existent. Liam smirked some as he saw a few dark birds munching on something in the distance – almost there!

He ran for a few seconds still and finally, when he reached their destination, the competitive brown wolf glanced around him to see if he had won or not.

Haha, Jackson's full of surprises! ;D / wc:368

Jackson had only ever really drifted through the old city at a slow and leisurely pace. When he adventured, he wanted to savor it, take in all the details he possibly could. In that way he had become almost familiar with the way most of these buildings towered over him, made of dense brick and concrete and who knows what else. The foreign lands were slowly becoming less strange to him. He would be able to pick out interesting spots to check out based on what he knew, and what looked odd or intriguing to him.

That said, racing through the city at the pace the boys picked up was a new and interesting experience to him. He never realized just how hard the pavement felt beneath his feet until now, as he pushed himself to try to win the impromptu race. So much different than the soft soils he was used to around home, and even different than the cool, rough stones that made up portions of the Anatheman caverns. Even the buildings seemed different as he ran past them at high speed, blurring as he passed by with one becoming almost indistinguishable from another. Suddenly he wasn’t feeling so confident that he knew the city very well at all.

The two of them pushed themselves for that extra stretch of the race, each eager to steal away the win. Once they’d blown past the small gathering of dark birds, which scattered and cawed at their approach, the race was over. Jackson slowed himself to a halt, a few paces behind Liam. Ah, man, he said, panting to catch his breath. You sure know how to run, eh bro? He found himself grinning despite turning out to be the loser of their little race. It’d been a fun way to get to their destination, what could he say?

He’d nearly forgotten about the gathering of feathered creatures they’d run past. The Acidic glanced over his shoulder to see what they had scattered from. It was a mottled mass of fur, almost like a… raccoon? Jackson scrunched up his nose at the sight of it. Dang, that solved that mystery, huh? Birds are havin’ themselves a corpse party.

It was only when he'd stopped running that Liam felt his limbs ache – too much too fast, he decided as he flexed his arm muscles, a grimace forming on his face. Note to self, races following a heated battle between himself and nasty Guardians didn't make for a comfortable outcome. The pain only lasted about a millisecond though, as did the look that crossed his features. Because when he realized he had won the race, his expression turned to one of satisfaction. It was nice to know he was still fast, even though he was recovering from having been in battle only three days prior. He was a competitive soul and winning was always better than losing; although he had never been a sour loser. He knew how to handle himself. He wasn't a lousy winner either – bragging and flaunting just wasn't his style. As long as he knew he was a winner, that was good enough.

But then again boys will be boys and sometimes a little flaunting wasn't all that terrible. “Ha, alright!” he said, his uninjured arm raised in the air in a sort of fist pump. “You do too, man! You're a real good opponent, that was a close one!” Liam added honestly. He had called his new friend 'man', which wasn't a nickname Liam used – ever. Jackson did though, along with 'bro'. They definitely weren't blood-related so the name made little sense to the brown-pelted wolf. Still, the nicknames were slowly rubbing off on him. Going back to the race though, Jackson truly was a fast one – considering Liam hadn't been too sure if he'd won or not when he'd first arrived at the destination.

Still rubbing at his aching muscles, Liam glanced over his shoulder and followed Jackson's gaze to the deceased raccoon. He took a few steps towards the poor unfortunate soul and crouched down, the movement sending a wave of pain through his lower body. He winced slightly but just like it had come, the pain left in a flash. “Yeah, quite the party. Wonder what happened to it.” Liam said with a shrug. It was then that, from his point of view crouched down on the asphalt floor, he saw the entrance to a building that was barely standing anymore, its roof half-caved in on itself and the door broken off completely. “Want to check out that place? I think I smell treasure!” he said. Or maybe it was just the foul stench of the dead animal but... either way it was worth a shot.

Liam seemed pleased with his victory, as he damn well should. It had been a close one, as the Court wolf said. Jackson had even had a slight head start, and he’d still managed to lose. The rowdiness of youth made him somewhat competitive, sure, but he wasn’t about to get bent out of shape at the loss. Jackson had had fun with it regardless, and that was what the hybrid boy was all about these days. Besides, there were other ways to settle the score. Yeah, man, Jackson began, grinning up at his new friend, You better watch out. I might just steal the win from ya next time. Whenever that next time might be was fine by him—Jackson wasn’t in any real hurry. Liam seemed like a real cool guy, and Jackson thought it could be fun for them to hang out again sometime. Who knows what life would throw their way.

Jackson followed the other to where the poor, unfortunate raccoon was lying a short distance away. He peered down at it with cerulean eyes as Liam crouched down for a better look at the dead thing. Dunno. Maybe the city was just too much awesome for it to handle. Yup, those birds had certainly done a number on it already. Or had that happened before the birds arrived? Well, either way, Jackson didn’t have much time to consider it, for a moment later Liam pointed out a location just perfect for treasure hunting. Ohh, I like the sound of that! Treasure! He laughed, a grin lighting up his features once again. Onward to the treasure! he proclaimed, pointing his staff towards the dilapidated building and beginning to march toward it. The old building looked like it had had one hell of a time out here too. What could have happened to that thing?

Liam shook his head – the idea that a next time was in order made him grin a little. It was nice to think that they would get to see each other again, even though they lived at different ends of the land. Liam wondered how long it would take before they did meet for a second time. Days? Weeks? Months? Maybe even years? Jackson was a lot of fun and could easily distract Liam from all of his worries back home – he was a friend worth having, by all means. “I'll keep that in mind.” the brown-pelted boy said. He meant those words too – he would definitely keep an eye out for any signs of competition. The two males were quite the competitive pair and Liam could tell their friendship would consist of quite a few friendly competitions and friendly banters. To be honest, all Liam was truly looking forward to was for them to hang out together again sometime in the future – near or distant.

Liam chuckled at Jackson's proposition as to how the raccoon had died, his bi-colored eyes glancing from the dog hybrid to the raccoon. It seemed like a pretty reasonable idea. After all, Halifax was a very awesome place. Liam inspected the dead creature for a few seconds longer. It was very mangled, bits and pieces of it probably somewhere in a bird's stomach by now. It would be near impossible for two young wolves to say what exactly had happened. “Maybe it was attacked by a coyote or a mountain lion or something.” Liam gave a suggestion of his own, but it was mostly thrown at the wind – a theory that would never get a straight answer. Liam was fine with keeping it at that, but it would have been a lot more fun to actually know the animal's cause of death. Just for curiosity's sake.

Liam tugged his empty rucksack higher onto his shoulder as he straightened up and followed Jackson towards the broken structure, a smirk on his face at the idea of what they could find in there. In his head, Liam was making up a story about the building's history. How it had once been the home of pirates and thieves – how humans had made a lot of secret hiding places in there that Jackson and Liam would now uncover. He had to lower his head and double over a little as to not hit his head on the door frame but once inside, Liam could stand up straight. The building seemed to have become the home of many small animals – rats, mice, maybe a raccoon... There were nests and garbage everywhere. At first glance, no sign of treasure. Liam side-stepped a broken doohickey he had no idea the function of and went to open a cabinet, only to have the rotting wood handle crumble on him. “Well now this is unfortunate.” he said softly, as though afraid that he could make the entire place fall down if he was too loud.

Liam seemed agreeable to the idea of hanging out again sometime down the road, which Jackson found himself really glad for. The hybrid boy didn’t really know too many people outside of Anathema, and he was delighted that he was beginning to change that. He was especially glad to have bumped into Liam here in the city today—the Cour des Miracles youth seemed like a lot of fun. The two new friends could likely get into a lot of adventures together. And of course, surprise races. What was better than that?

His companion seemed to have his own idea of what might have happened to the unfortunate little raccoon-turned-bird-food. An attack by a larger predator made more sense than Jackson’s explanation. But hey, who’s to say their suggestions had to be mutually exclusive? Maybe that was the manifestation of the city’s awesomeness? Alright, note to self. Be on the look out for lions and coyotes, he joked with a grin. As interesting as that would be to find out here, it would probably be for the best for that mystery to remain unsolved.

Jackson ducked down beneath the doorway as Liam had to get inside. That was one thing he wasn’t all that fond of when skulking around the old city; all the doorways were so damn short that the tall boy was always worried about smacking his head against one of them. Humans had to have been some tiny little things, though for as short as they apparently were, they had no trouble building up tall structures, as the city plainly demonstrated. Jackson drifted through the garbage-filled room, taking in the sight of the building. He made his way to one corner of the room where an old plastic table sat. He tapped it experimentally with his staff. The table wobbled slightly, as if one of the legs wasn’t the right length, but it held steady. He glanced over to Liam as he spoke and laughed at the sight of the rotting handle. Dang, time wasn’t all the kind to this place, huh?

He crouched down to get a better look at the wobbly table and caught sight of something stashed in the corner. Well, well, what do we have here? It looked like some kind of big metal box, rusting on one side but otherwise intact. The boy reached for it and dragged it out from underneath the table, grunting from the unexpected weight of it. Why was this thing so heavy? Blue eyes darted over to his friend. What d’ya think’s in it?

Liam could think of a few things better than surprise races. Like for example surprises races where his limbs weren't threatening to fall off or days where he didn't have to be scared for his family and friends. But of course races did beat quite a lot of things as far as the fun scale was concerned. They were entertaining and proved to be a real challenge when you had a worthy opponent such as Jackson. “...and bears... and bobcats... and...” Liam drifted off. He couldn't think of many large animals off the top of his head. Most of them weren't exactly hard to hunt down – like foxes. “But I doubt many animals are much of a match for us.” he stated aloud. Liam was a pretty decent hunter but when compared to some other members of his pack like Niro... he wasn't that great. Still. Didn't hurt to flaunt his skills just a little bit, right? Especially in the presence of another competitive male roughly his age.

But now he wasn't concerned with bobcats or any kind of wild predators that could be lurking about. He was concentrating on finding treasures and not getting squished alive by a crumbling building that was certainly unsafe to roam in. “Definitely not – hopefully it was kind to whatever this place has as far as treasures though.” Liam said in agreement. “It would be so cool to find something really great and well-preserved!” he stated as he went and tried to pry the same cupboard open with his claws. After a few seconds he managed to make a few scratches on the rotting wood. But then he got lucky and managed to slip his finger in a hole and could then pull towards him in order to open the little square-shaped door. “Ah!” he said in triumph. Unfortunately for him, aside from a couple spiders and a lot of dust, there was absolutely nothing. He sighed.

Simultaneously Jackson seemed to have found something. Liam glanced behind him and caught sight of the metal box. He was interested to see what was in there. Turning around and approaching his new friend, Liam watched as Jackson dragged the box from underneath the table it had been stashed under. “I don't know. Weapons maybe? Or food? Humans had their own type of food I think.” he suggested. Of course, that was if humans were real. “Try to open it!” Liam encouraged.

Liam continued to list off more creatures, and boasted that they weren’t a match for them. That brought a grin to the Anatheman youth’s lips along with an eager laugh. Hell yeah! Well, that was certainly something to consider. Nothing can beat our combined power, he said with a grin. Oh, yeah. The two of them would make quite the team, Jackson decided. The fearsome Liam and Jackson, everybody watch out!

So now they had to put that teamwork power together there in their search for treasure. In such a dilapidated old building, who knew what they would find or how dangerous it might be to uncover it. Jackson agreed with his new friend that it would be awesome if they could find some cool items that hadn’t been messed up by time. Yeah, man, there’s gotta be something awesome that’s in good condition in here. I can feel it! He looked up eagerly as Liam triumphantly shouted when he opened the shelf. His dejected sigh, however, revealed that their ‘treasure’ wasn’t to be found in there. Damn, no luck yet.

The other youth listed off a few ideas of what might’ve been in Jackson’s mysterious box. Food? Dang, maybe. He didn’t want to think about how long food might’ve been in there if that was the case. He nodded at the encouragement and set about trying to see how he could open the box up. Alright, let’s see what you have to offer. He worked his fingers around the edge of the box’s lid and pulled, but it didn’t budge right away. Jackson frowned at it, gave the thing a good whack, then tried again. That was the charm. The lid opened up to reveal… a collection of small toy cars. The hybrid frowned at the contents, reaching in to pick up one of the small cars. What the… he stared at it for a moment before glancing back up at his friend.

Liam sneezed as he moved a few items and dust raised from its resting place, filling his nostrils. “Urck.” he said under his breath. He had made more room for his large frame to approach Jackson and the box though, ready for the black and white male to open it and reveal its contents. If it was food, Liam knew it would probably have smelt bad, even if it was contained in the box. He dropped that idea from his mind. Weapons? Still a possibility. If Liam had to pick what he wanted to find inside the box however, it would be those medical supplies he'd come here for. “The suspense is killing me, open it already!” Liam laughed as he surveyed Jackson with an amused look on his furry brown face, bi-colored eyes glinting in excitement.

The first time it didn't work. Liam relaxed a moment only to tense up again at Jackson's second attempt. The whack probably did the trick because Liam found his excitement and curiosity at an all time high, eyes watching carefully as the lid raised and he finally discovered what was inside. He was caught very much off-guard, staring curiously down at the items. What were they exactly?

Liam looked oddly astonished by the toys. He moved over to sniff the one Jackson had held up. It only smelt like rusty metal and that odd moldy smell of confinement. “What kind of monster is that?” he asked as he grabbed another one of the toy cars and held it up so that he could take a better look at it. He mistook the four wheels for legs and the headlights as eyes – in his mind, this was a replica the humans had made to represent some large, beastly creature. He wondered why they'd used metal though and not the squishy, fake animals that was still circulating around the packs – Liam had seen a few plushie animals in the past and he was comparing these metallic toys to them. “They come in a lot of colors.” he muttered thoughtfully. Probably like wolves could be all kinds of colors.

No worries! Sorry for the shortness here. / wc:303

Liam seemed just as confused about his find as he was. Well, he was certainly glad it wasn’t food, at least, but these puzzling little metal things only served to summon up more questions. His timber-colored friend thought it was a type of monster. Hell, that was a better explanation than anything Jackson could come up with. The Anatheman boy took a closer look at the one in his hand. Yeah, he supposed it kinda did look like a monster. Man, I dunno. It ain’t nothin’ I’ve ever seen before. But it sure isn’t the scary kind of monster, with no teeth like that…

He dug through the collection of toys, curiosity overriding his confusion. Different shapes, too, he mused as he lifted up another of the toys, this one modeled after an old pickup truck. He set that one off to the side, and was about to begin digging through them again when he thought of a much better idea. He scooted back and dumped the contents of the box out onto the floor. It was a slightly noisy affair as all the tiny metal things crashed about, and Jackson winced slightly. But just as quickly the sound was over with, all of the cars settled onto the ground, save for one small one that used what was left of its momentum to role away.

He was going to grab after it when something sticking out of the odd pile of metal monsters caught his eye. A-ha! he exclaimed, reaching out for it. He lifted an old set of keys from the pile of toys. Look what we have here, he said, cerulean eyes glancing back up to Liam. Now that was a bit of human technology that he did recognize. What sort of treasures would these old things lead them to?

Do you think we could start wrapping this up? Maybe a couple more posts each? ↔ 389 words

Liam watched carefully as Jackson took a closer look – after his brief inspection Jackson also concluded that it could be a monster, but not a scary kind. Liam's eyes darted from the strange toys to Jackson. “Yeah... you're right. But it looks pretty strange; scary or not... I've never seen a real life monster like that – maybe it's not from around these parts? Or maybe they all died with the humans?” he mused as he took another one of the metal toys in his hands and turned it around in his palm a couple times. He soon found that its paws – or what Liam thought should be paws – could spin onto themselves. “Huh.” he muttered to himself.

The tinkling and clunking sounds of the metals as they dropped onto the floor caught Liam's attention and he turned his bi-colored eyes onto Jackson again. His eyes then caught the stray car as it rolled away. He glanced at the car he was holding into his hand again. That was when Jackson spoke again, emitting a triumphant sound as he found a set of keys. Liam wasn't really interested in that however, instead glancing at the car again. Suddenly a light seemed to suddenly clicked on in his mind. He had seen those 'paws' before. Or at least the black part. “I think I've seen these before...” he mused as he touched the wheel's black tire. “I think I've seen all of it!” he added quickly – and it had been pretty close by too! He couldn't believe he hadn't connected the dots until now.

He didn't wait for Jackson to speak, making his way out of the structure and glancing around at the dead city. It was hiding under all of the overgrowth, but just a couple feet away he could still see two tires attached to a metal shell – it was a car, rusty and very much abandoned. Of course it was an exact replica of the toys... only much, much bigger. There was a large dent at the top and the windows were smashed. Liam approached carefully and peaked inside. “I don't think it's a monster! I don't think it's even an animal! Check it out!” he said loudly as he peered behind him for signs of Jackson.

Sounds good to me. Sorry this is short.

Jackson watched as the other boy considered the small toy in his hand again. Something about it sure seemed to have his attention. The blue-eyed boy glanced down at the pile of tiny cars he’d created, trying to puzzle out what was so interesting about them. When Liam spoke, his words revealed what had been keeping his attention glued to the small metal thing—he apparently recognized it. And just like that his wolfish friend was out the door. Jackson blinked after him for a moment, confused. He glanced back down toward the pile of cars and picked one up in his free hand. He studied it, trying to see if he could recognize anything about it too, but wasn’t having any luck. Well, sitting in here wasn’t going to do him any good with that.

With the toy car and ring of keys in tow, the hybrid boy followed his friend outside, curiosity growing more and more. Liam hadn’t gone far, and in fact peering at something large in the overgrowth. Jackson was puzzled at first, but when Liam spoke, he began to realize just what he was looking at. Cerulean eyes widened in surprise, glancing between the huge beat up car and the tiny model in his hand. Oh man, that’s crazy. Liam’s earlier claim that they all died with the humans now seemed to be somewhat true; sure, it wasn’t exactly a monster in the first place, but this thing here sure looked beat to hell and “dead” to him. Jackson went in for a closer look as well, leaning forward slightly to get a better look inside the thing. This thing’s huge…

Eek, it's not my best and sorry for the lateness! Liam found what he was looking for. Haha. ↔ 421 words

“I wonder what it's called.” Liam said as Jackson commented on the car's size. He was curious about a lot of things too – like how in the world that thing had functioned when it had been alive and what use it had had for the humans. It was even bigger than a horse! Or a bear, maybe! Probably bigger than any animal Liam had encountered in the past. He still had to bend over a little when he entered through the hole that had once been a door but that was just because Liam was taller than the thing. From left to right, the car was so much more imposing.

He made his way deeper inside the car, his feet stepping in mud and abandoned nests. There were wires bitten to the core by rats and underneath the rubble and mess Liam managed to feel carpet. It really wasn't soft though, proof that weather had damaged it. Making his way even further, to the point where he was almost on the other side of the car, Liam caught sight of something peaking from under a seat. Avoiding a pointed edge of rusty metal – it would have caused him quite a bit of damage to the shoulder blade if he would have caught himself on it, Liam closed the distance and carefully picked the yellowed box up from under the passenger seat. There were faded letters on it that Liam couldn't make out. There was also a light pink cross that had perhaps been red once upon a time. He recognized it from something he had seen back at the Miracles' Kingdom. “I think I found what I was looking for.” he said as he held the tattered first aid kit up for Jackson to see.

It took him a few moments to uncover how the box was closed but when he popped the lid open he found all sorts of medical supplies, including some he had never seen or heard of before. He smiled triumphantly. “This is so cool!” he said, glad that his excursion wasn't all for nothing. Not that it would have been though. He glanced back at Jackson. He had met someone that could be a very good friend down the road and a potential ally if ever things went bad with this brewing war between the southern packs. Liam could only imagine all of the adventures they could go on together – maybe Liam could even visit this Anathema place one day!

No worries. We can maybe end it here, or with another post or two? Up to you. o: / wc:344

Jackson couldn’t help but wonder what the name of the thing might be as well. Everything had a name, right? Bears and rats and trees… but what was this thing? Calling it “Big Metallic Monster” seemed a bit clunky. But whatever, they could figure that out later, couldn’t they? Right now there was an investigation to be had, and that was much more important (and more interesting) than figuring out what to call it.

While Liam made his way into the car, Jackson busied himself on the other side, peering in through one of the broken windows in the back half of the car. Broken glass was strewn about the torn up seats and the area was littered with all sorts of things, and something that may have once been a rat’s nest. Liam called out from the front of the car, and Jackson glanced up to see Liam holding something up. Alright, sweet! Well, well, it looked like this was a success!

The hybrid boy moved over to the front side of the car, glancing through yet another broken window to watch as Liam fiddled with the yellow box. He finally managed to get the thing open, and the smile on his face told Jackson that this certainly was what he’d been searching for all along. Cerulean eyes glanced at the contents of the box for a second, recognizing one or two of the contents, but the rest of it was a mystery to him. He never claimed to be a medic, that was for sure. Liam’s outburst prompted a grin to Jackson’s features. Hell yeah! The best kind of adventures are the ones where you find the treasure, yeah? He was certainly glad that this had been a successful search. Jackson hadn’t expected to have this much fun when he’d decided to run out to the city, but he was sure glad that he had. He got to have a bit of an adventure and he met a pretty cool guy. All in all, Jackson figured today was one pretty good day.

Feel free to wrap it up now if you want. =) This one could easily be the ending post too though. ↔ 385 words

Big Metallic Monster. It was probably the best name they'd be able to come up with; Liam wondered if maybe his father or mother would know – or maybe even his older siblings. 'Mara and Kable had traveled a bit, maybe they'd met someone who was aware of what these monsters were truly called. But until then, all they could truly do was explore. Now that was something Liam could do and he could do it well too. Props to his curious and adventurous mind.

Liam was vaguely aware of Jackson walking around the piece of metal, but he didn't fully register the black and white male's actions, too busy focusing on what he saw and what he was feeling. This car and its interior was absolutely amazing! One of the coolest things Liam had ever seen in his short life of less than a year. It wasn't until he had the medical supplies and had called out to Jackson that he actually looked around for the hybrid. Jackson was looking at him through a broken window. “Definitely!” Liam agreed to Jackson's words.

Liam beamed, very much happy with the day in general. “This was a lot of fun,” he said as he maneuvered his way out of the car. “I wasn't even expecting to find this–” he brought up the first aid kit so that Jackson could take a closer look “–but I did. Pretty good day, if you ask me.” Yep. He had exercised because of his long walk, he had seen Halifax again, he had met a new friend and he had gathered medical items for the Court. It was a job well done.

Unfortunately the sun was determined to put an end to the day however, Liam seeing just how low in the sky it had gotten. Just another two or three hours and it would be dark. “I think I better get home.” he said. A part of him didn't want to leave though – he knew he had to – because he didn't know just when he'd see Jackson next. A couple weeks? A month? Six? A year? There was so many miles between their two packs that it could be very difficult to meet again, unless it happened by chance – like today.
