ooc: Forward dated Oct. 29th. If anyone from Ichika follows/joins X'y on her hunting trip, I'll adjust my post accordingly. :] 577 words

Her patience was stretched to its fraying point. Pulled anymore taut and it would have snapped one anyone unfortunate to be around during the point of breaking. Day in and out, she suffered the excessive screeching of this supposed 'gift' from Nature. Days before, her fellow Ichikan Shiloh was kind enough to enlightened the Nomad to this strange occurrence and claimed that the harassing avian was actually a blessing in the guise of annoyance. X'yrin did not need to look above her to know the owl shadowed her steps, its wing beats silent though its screeching gave him away. Her noisy shadow, he was always there, watching over her whilst interrupting her daily tasks. She could no longer hunt in peace nor successfully with the dam bird lurking overhead, stealing her kill before she had the chance to snare it for herself. She couldn't even enjoy something as simple as walking upon four legs without the bird looking at her broad back as an invitation to perch. As soon as she dropped to all fours, the owl was upon her, talons locked in her mane despite her efforts to shake him off. Only on two legs was she free to walk with some semblance of peace.

But even that was short lived.

It was like a Nomad to travel for the sake of broadening one's senses, yet she felt odd straying so far from the Ichikan border. With the Mountains to her back, she traveled south in search of game. The hunter's spirit whirling within her despite the annoyance of her stalker. The lust for the hunt was not easily discouraged by something as fickle as a noisy bird. Besides, the Nomad in her was more than pleased to be among the strange and wondrous again.

Previsions were left at her home base having grown used to traveling without much. It was refreshing to be at the mercy of Nature. A few days of uncertainty would not harm her. By mental map she recounted the days spent on the road. Two, if she recounted the rise and fall of the sun correctly and this day would be her third. Her endurance was unwavering, culturally developed by her early years among her own kind. But she would have made much more headway had her nuisance not insist she stop time and again to eat. The reason for this hunting party was so she could do the killing, not the bird. What trophies could she collect if the tails she brandished were all from a bird of prey? Every few hours the bird would leave, granting her an extensive quiet before some helpless creature fell limp at her feet. It became like clockwork. As soon as the carcass hit either her head or feet, it was time to stop less she wanted to deal with the screeching racket and torrent of wings at her face.

And timed to perfection, a small hare came plummeting from the sky aimed at the Optime's shoulder. X'yrin snatched the carcass with a snarl and turned her trembling muzzle toward the descending bird. "Please stop doing that..." Despite her irritation, she held out an arm for the owl to land on. It stared at her expectantly, its large head swiveling from her muzzle to the hare. Quietly, it hooted. "Ah... so you can make quiet sounds..." Again it hooted then stretched out a great wing as if pointing to the limp hare.

Smile

The feline's countenance was placid, a perfectly calm representation of his race. He lay in the soft grass, staring at what was a gray and blue sky. Animals grazed by him - some deer in the distance, that which he could sense by smell and by the sound of their heavy feet crunching the grass below, squirrels squeaking and chattering in the trees above, bugs and lizards scrambling around to avoid the seeking eyes of blue jays and cardinals. Another sensation of life joined the fray - although Element did not twitch nor move from his spot, his nose and ears caught wind of a Luperci just around the corner, and from the soft and quiet stance of whoever it was, it appeared that she, a female by her scent, must be hunting.

Not for long, it seemed, however, as the Luperci's careful and quiet demeanor changed, and Element heard the bending of the grass and smelled another creature - this time it was an owl. He heard the female Luperci's voice, slightly angry, talking to it - the owl, of course, would not be able to understand her, unless it was a rather intelligent owl. Birds could be smart, Element knew, which was one of the reasons he did not hunt them. Particularly crows and ravens - they were among the smartest, and he knew that a few could even speak.

The owl, however, was no crow nor raven, and so was perhaps not as intelligent as one. Deciding to move from his spot, he got up, stretched his legs out, and stealthily walked towards the voice of the Luperci and the sound of the owl. When he was in sight of them, he simply sat in the ground and stared with emerald eyes for a moment before considering what the pair were doing - hunting? If so, why be so loud about it?

She was not fond of stopping like this, but if it meant appeasing this dreadful creature and keep it from screaming and scaring off her prey, she would accommodate it for the time being. She rounded her powerful shoulder, bidding the bird to take flight for a moment so she could seat herself and the hare. Speckled wings spanned not wide, but unfurled enough to set the bird aloft then let it fall with a soft thump on the ground in front of the seated female.

It watched with wide, eager eyes as the hare was sliced in two down its belly with carefully sharpened claws. Each cut through its fragile flesh was meticulous and clean, skinning fur from tender meats carefully so as not to tear the hide completely. We would need it, though it was small, as a memento; a trophy, one could say. Meaty limbs were tore from their sockets, the scent of kill hanging ominously in place of her protective avian who hooted eagerly, even hopping closer to snatch himself a taste of rabbit. X'yrin smiled, unable to deny his enthusiasm much longer. "Isn't there some rodent for you to catch?" she teased.

The pair fell into comfortable repose with the chatter of Nature as their ambient tune. Her ears were filled with the incoherent nose of fodder scurrying about then suddenly fell silent as they did when sensing a predator. Serene smile fell away to wary. The hunter's ears were on a swivel, the soft pad of steps reaching her ears as they drew near. As if the shadows themselves conceived life, a form manifested then parted from its darkened womb. A striking emerald gaze looked calmly back at her, its bold form folding comfortably to sit. A chill course down her spine, rearing her shoulders back defensively as a protective hand came across her chest. It was so calm... the woods suddenly void of life; the stage set for something ominous.

Was this....death? The Nomad felt herself grow cold at the mere thought. "Have you...-" Had it want? Had it come for her? Perhaps it just smelled the rabbit. She looked down at the forgotten hare then back to her spectacle of terror. "Food?"

i apologize for the wait!

He saw as the heavy-furred female sliced open the rabbit with ease, and then noticed him soon after - after an utterance of whether there was a rodent for him to catch or not, which he decided not to dignify with an answer, she began to look more and more panicked a time went on. Eventually he heard her ask a vague and yet ominous sounding question - had he.. what? And then she asked the question 'food'. Perhaps she was mentally disabled?

"My name is Element," he said to the girl, wondering what she would say in return. The owl nearby her, who was watching the decapitated and demolished hare with greedy and hungry eyes, was now still and quiet - a stark contrast from what he was before, when he was hooting lowly from a distance, a noise that Element could hear with his large, sensitive and cupped ears from far away. Sitting with his black, sleek tail wrapped around his paws, he waited for the canine's response.

ooc:

The specter of death could speak! Perhaps she should have inquired that before assuming the creature was dumb… Outside of the Nomad community she had come across few animals like the black feline before her. The ones she had were much, much larger and advised in their own silent displays that she keep away from them. It was a warning she was happy enough to oblige.

But this little creature before her didn’t pose much of a threat, though its disposition appeared rather annoyed to her. Beside her, her nameless companion snatched another bit of hare and consumed it quietly, not so much as giving the feline the time of day. Noticing this, she felt eased enough to speak in return. “I am X’yrin. This bird has no name. Have we somehow disturbed you, Element?” The inquired with genuine concern. “We hadn’t meant to.”

The canine seemed surprised for a moment after Element spoke; many and most encounters with the speakers of High Speech acted this way, and he wasn't surprised nor was he interested anymore in knowing why this was the general reaction - it simply was. He had long accepted that, and it didn't bother him like it may have used to bother him - he knew that most felines were speakers of the Low Speech rather than the High; just like he would be surprised at meeting a bit of prey or lesser creature that could speak High Speech, he could imagine that a canine would be equally surprised at finding the smaller and slimmer feline to be able to communicate. Before long, however, she spoke back to him and he smiled for a moment; life was continuing as normal and the speech she gave, rather than questioning, was apologetic.

"Not at all, he said, ignoring the bird that tore bits of meat off of the freshly killed hare. "Not at all. It is nice to meet you, X'yrin," the male cat said softly. "What brings you and your nameless companion out on this fine day?"
