Delicately shaped paws, stained by the mud and muck, crushed the brown leaves with a satisfying crackle at each step. Flecks of mud and soot stood out on pale ivory legs that quivered and tremble from the flight of the previous day. He had been running since sunset and the sun had just crested the horizon. Once pale fur had been singed and stained from the fire, making him stand out less than he usually would. His thin rib cage shuddered in and out as he wheezed. With a shaking cough, black slime flew from his mouth. His thin legs spread apart for balance as he hunched over with that cough. Long after it was over, he stood in that position, just wheezing. He continued on his way, limping.

His eyes were red from the strain, and it hurt the poor wolf to focus. He had left the fire behind for two days, but the effects were still obvious. His pale coat was stained gray and his every breath was painfully obvious. His stained paws dragged on the ground, and he looked dead on his feet. But some life jolted back into his glazed eyes his ears pricked. Water! Dhiate's paws lifted and he ran to the small, clear stream ahead. The cold water was excruciatingly painful, but it felt so good...

It had been a few days since Kiara went traveling and today seemed like as good day as any to wander. Kiara had finally been accepted into Ichika no Ho-en and her recent adventures with the pack members had been exhausting both physically and mentally. However, the pack was up to something so the young wolf didn't want to travel too far.

Once again, today's menu would be fresh fish caught in a local stream. Honestly, the arctic wolf was getting tired of eating fish and now that the salmon run was over she would be able to switch her diet to a different source of food. Today would be her last fishing trip and it proved to have a fairly small sampling. As Kiara splashed through the shallows, she spotted a small brown trout trying to get away from her. The huntress continued to drive the fish upstream where it would have a harder time escaping her jaws. Kiara watched for just the right moment before snatching the unfortunate fish. The trout squirmed in the females jaws and managed to free itself for just a moment. As the fish fell, the snowy wolf grabbed the trout by its tail and placed it on the banks of the stream to enjoy her meal.

Kiara dipped her snowy head towards the fish, but stopped before her she could chow down. The young wolf's ears flicked forward to listen. Someone was approaching from the other side of the stream. A trembling male ran towards the water and began to drink. His naturally white coat was stained with ash and mud and his legs looked like they could barely support him. Kiara had never seen the stranger around these parts and decided to call out to the quivering male"Are you okay? Do you need help?"

After Dhiate had enough water to sate him, or rather, when he couldn't drink anymore, he stood panting in the water. His black tipped ears pricked forward, and his bloodshot eyes widened. His head jerked up and he looked into the sapphire eyes of a female. Something in the back of his head told him that he should be attracted, for she was a rather pretty wolf, but he wasn't. He just felt confusion. How should he act?

Water dripped from his chin as he just stared, dumbfounded. In truth, the female in front of him wasn't so different from he. They both were pale-well supposed to be-and had blue-sort of-eyes. He was only and inch taller than her, but was slightly smaller in build than she. She was slightly older, but not by much. So why was he so unnerved by her? Because he didn't know what to do. He had never really dealt with females. In his pack, males and females had usually been separated for different training.

His breath shuddered as he realized he should answer. But could he? He opened his mouth and tried, but nothing came out but a hoarse cough. A painful, hoarse cough that set off a series of painful hoarse coughs. He stained the stream in front of him black with ash and saliva. So did he need help? Yes. Would he accept it? Never. His pride wouldn't allow it.

His pale gray blue eyes lowered in shame and his ears pushed back. He didn't want this to happen. Didn't want to seem so weak in front of the girl, in front of anyone.

The alabaster male should have intrigued Kiara. His soot stained coat was unkept and his fiery eyes were sharp and strong. If one looked past his singed coat and dripping muzzle, they would be able to see a handsome young wolf. However, Kiara was oblivious to all this and was more worried about the stranger's health. His cough was bad and the black mucus that he spit out was a bad sign. Kiara knew nothing about healing or medicine, and so she wasn't sure how to help the strange wolf.

Kiara thought that the male looked a lot like her brother Crowl. Crowl did not have a pristine white coat like herself or her sister. Rather, Kiara's brother took after their father and had bits of grey and brown that flaked his coat. The strange male before Kiara also acted like Crowl too, in the fact that he hated to be seen as weak and would often feel ashamed when he was injured. Crowl would sometimes slink home after getting into a fight with the neighborhood coyotes. When Kiara finally managed to locate Crowl, he would often lower his eyes and slick his ears back just as the stranger was doing. They weren't completely alike though, Crowl had golden eyes and was larger than her by a few inches.

Despite their differences, the arctic wolf still saw her brother in the stranger which made her all the more worried. Kiara did the only thing she could do, she grabbed the fish at her paws and slowly made her way towards the male. As she approached she assumed the appropriate demeanor and lowered herself and her tail. The arctic wolf kept her eyes trained on the males paws and whined a little as she approached. When she got halfway across the stream, Kiara stopped and flicked her head to show the fish was a peace offering. She wanted to get closer, to lick the young males wounds and coerce him back to Ichika. There was a healer there that could help him, if only he'd let her approach.

Dhiate took a step back for every two she took forward. His ever-changing eyes widened and he whined pitifully as she lay down the fish. He didn't want to take food she had caught, she should eat it. He could last without it... At least he hoped he could.

Dhiate sat down where he was and wrapped his thick, luxurious tail around his feet. He would take not one step towards or away from her. He wouldn't be a coward; he wouldn't be weak. As he sat, he locked his grey blue eyes on her sapphire ones and refused to let the contact break, but he couldn't hold true to his resolve. He was forced to break away as his body shuddered and quivered in a severe fit off coughs that lasted several minutes. Tears pricked his eyes from the pain, and blood could be found among the black specks on his paws and the ground around them. He wheezed and he closed his eyes. He didn't know how much longer he would last in this kind of condition. He knew his brother would scoff at him and call him weak, but what could he do? He was helpless and terrified.

Kiara had spent months looking after her stupid brother, and now there was this stupid male also refusing help when he desperately needed it. Being stubborn was one thing, but this was just being pigheaded. Stupid males with their stupid pride and their stupid, stupid, attitudes. If this male was Kiara's brother, she would have dragged him halfway to the pack lands by now. But alas, the injured male was a stranger and had to be treated with respect. Kiara gave a sigh as she watched him back away before deciding to challenge her to staring contest.

Kiara grabbed the fish and flung it at the male's feet. Unfortunately, he went into another coughing fit and even spat up blood this time. What had happened to get the young male into this terrible state? Kiara heaved another sigh and walked closer toward the injured male. "Namaste, my name is Kiara Amarok from Ichika no Ho-en. Eat the fish, it's an offering of peace. And take another drink of water while your at it. I've already eaten today, so I'm full." Kiara lied about already eating, but she knew the male needed it more. If she could get the male to co-operate, perhaps she could convince him to travel to Ichika or at least let her tend to his wounds.

Dhiate raised an eyebrow and glared, although... it was a gentle glare. Almost as if he knew that she would help him, but he was just too stubborn. Which was the truth. Never would he ever give up his pride and allow another to feed him. Yet, he knew she wouldn't give up so easily. Stupid girl. This is why he didn't associate with her kind very often. They were fickle, and didn't know their limits. But for once, he would.... He couldn't think of it as giving up. It was merely compromising, yes compromising!

Dhiate rolled his eyes and sidled forward. His lungs wheezed with every breath, but he kept edging forward. He sat with the fish an inch from his paws and looked down at it. It took so much out of him to do just this. Stupid pride. He bent down and took a single bite, then pushed the fish forward with his nose. Hopefully she wouldn't notice that he took such a large bite, or that the bite had been swallowed whole... Hopefully not. Had he been human, his face would have been maroon from embarrassment. But he wasn't human, so that was no problem. He didn't even know what a human was...

There was obvious pain in the males face as he worked to take a single bite of the fish Kiara had offered him. The male looked so weak and hurt, but Kiara did not know how to help him. His breath was ragged and labored, yet still he tried to look as though nothing was bothering him. Kiara watched the male with a worried eye and decided to get closer to the unknown wolf. Taking advantage of the distraction, Kiara silently slipped in next to the male to take a look at his wounds. There was nothing wrong with him on the surface, but the male seemed to smell of smoke and fire. Could he have been in a fire recently? Kiara had not heard of any such thing happening close to Ichika no Ho-en. Where did this male come from?

Kiara never touched the male, though she did get very close. Instead she stared at him with her sapphire eyes that burned with a thousand questions. Who was he? What happened to him? Why was he hurt? Why does he look like a girl? Rather than asking these questions, Kiara simply settled with a simple comment, "You know, I still don't know your name. Also, only cowards don't ask for help. We're not coyotes, we're wolves and work best in a pack." Her voice started out in a joking manner, but quickly became firm, almost scolding. With a flick of her tail, the young women retreated a few steps before seeking shelter under a nearby tree. Kiara decided to lie down on the leaves at the trees base. Even though she was relaxed, the arctic wolf continued to watch the strange male to see what he would do. Kiara doubted the male could harm her in his state, but if he wanted to he might get in a lucky shot.

A faint snarl tugged at his lips as the girl edged closer. What was she thinking? He didn't know. He never knew, and it got on Dhiate's nerves. The snarl became real, if silent, as she spoke. Who did she think she was? He wasn't a coward! Even if he wanted help, he couldn't ask. It hurt too much. And what was this about not being coyotes? He knew he wasn't a coyote, be he had never felt very relaxed around wolves after his mother and father left. At that moment, his eyes widened with fear and pain.

Another cough took over. It burned his lungs, ripped at him. What had he done to deserve such pain? His throat felt like a rabbit had scratched and clawed him. His muscles all tensed as one. Dhiate's slender frame froze up as he hunched over. Silently, he sobbed, though the girl probably wouldn't have been able to tell. He just look to be coughing even harder. His slate blue eyes dulled, glazed over. The world around him faded around the edges and blood dripped from the corner of his mouth. His breathing ragged, he looked up at the pretty female. His gray-blue eyes bore into her sapphire ones. The whites of his eyes were red and filled with pain right before they rolled back in his head. And he collapsed.

The male's snarl did not even phase Kiara. Although the two almost were equal in size, it was obvious that Kiara outweighed the scrawny male by several pounds. Not to mention he was severely injured and his internal wounds would prevent him from doing much damage to Kiara. Kiara was unsure as to how she should proceed. Despite her attempts, other than his silent glares, the white male had refused to even speak to Kiara. It was obvious the snow wolf's words angered the stranger, yet there seemed to be pain in his blue eyes. Kiara regretted trying to anger the male. It was obvious her words had stuck him in a way that she did not intend.

As another coughing fit ensued, all Kiara could do was watch hopelessly as the male spit up yet more blood. A small, worried whine escaped from her white lips. She did not like the way his breathing sounded, nor did she like the way his body shook from exhaustion. Before long, the white male fainted. The snow wolf could only watch, wide-eyed as the stranger collapsed on the ground. Now Kiara was whining in earnest, trying to wake the unconscious male. Gently Kiara prodded the side of his face with her wet nose, but the gesture did not seem to work. Raising her large head, the arctic wolf looked around, as if the answer she needed to help this male was nearby. A confused web of thoughts danced in Kiara's head, all vying for her attention. Should she go back to the pack and as for help? No, that would leave male defenseless to attacks from other predators. And if he should awake in her absence, then he would most likely believe he had been abandoned. But if she called for help then someone might be able to heal the injured male. What if those who came were not friendly? Kiara was not a hunter, not a fighter. She was not confident she could defend herself from any unfriendly luperci.

Finally, exasperated, the white female did the only thing she could. Kiara checked to make sure he was still breathing before she circled around to the males back. Kiara laid down on the grass and stretched her body so that her sides were touching the males back. Kiara would provide the male with a source of heat and watch over him. If the male should pass, then Kiara will have been there to witness it. If the male lived, then perhaps she could help him when he awoke. Until then, Kiara would simply wait.

Silence. Soft, sweet silence filled his ears. No whispers of the wind, or crackled of flames. The world had been enveloped in a black cloak of silence. It was so unreal, but so welcomed. Dhiate began to enjoy this sweet reprieve. No pain. No feeling. There was nothing in this world of darkness. This was what it should feel like always. Something cold brushed his cheek. Dhiate looked up to see glowing orbs of white. Snow? No, it wasn't snow. It wasn't cold. As the first orb touched the ground, it spread across, illuminating everything in sight. With horror, he looked upon the sight of a great massacre. There were bones littering the bloodstained ground everywhere. Small fires continued to burn in some places. He looked towards the white flakes in the sky, but they had turned into black ash. Nothing stirred in this desolate wasteland. Dhiate took a step back, bones crunched underneath his feet. He turned and ran, but there was no end to it.

A soft whimper escaped the ash-stained wolf. His ribs quivered with shaky breaths that steadily grew faster. His body reacted as it would if he had been running. He was frantic. Dhiate's eyes fluttered behind closed lids. A moan came from him, if you could call it a moan. In truth it just sounded like air escaping his lungs. His blood stained the ground beneath his maw. A sliver of gunmetal blue escaped from those shadowy eyelids. He opened them completely and looked up at the sapphire eyed female. Why was she helping him? He didn't deserve it.

Patience was never a virtue that Kiara had managed to master. She was always the restless pup and it was a trait she carried into adulthood, if you could call it that. Yet the sight of the white males suffering shocked her into patience. She didn't move, she didn't twitch, she didn't fidget. She stayed; she waited. Occasionally Kiara would lick his head or his cheeks, urging the male to press on. He had to fight, he had to live. The snow wolf didn't know him, yet she still cared. Gentle souls were strange like that, they cared for others almost immediately.

It seemed like he was having a nightmare. His desperate movements and heavy breathing. He must be running. she thought. It sure looked like he was running. Kiara couldn't even imagine the horrors that he must have witnessed. Kiara's life had always been easy, always been quite. There was no way the snowy female could fully comprehend the male's pain.

After what seemed like hours, the stranger finally stirred. His brilliant blue eyes cracked open and the young girl let out a whine. "Glad to see you've decided to join the living." Her joking tone was painted with worry. Even if the male was conscious again, there was no telling if he would make it. Once again Kiara wished she had medical knowlege, or at least the ability to shift. At that moment, being a luperci seemed better than being useless. Kiara began to lick the male's ear, trying to bring him some comfort. "Can you sit up? You need to drink. I can bring you some more food if your hungry."

He was so confused. What had he done to deserve such pain? He had face many horrors in his life but he couldn't recall doing anything to deserve it. He had tried to be a good wolf. Honest! So who had decided to torture him? Did some higher being through this evil upon him for a laugh? It rubbed his fur the wrong way thinking about somebody trying to toy wit him.

And on that note, who in the heck was this chick? Why was she kind to him? Did she expect some kind of payment? He hadn't anything to give. He couldn't even feel an ounce of affection towards her. He thought it cruel of the fates to do this to him. Place in such a position and then shove his life into the paws of a stranger. The more he thought, the angrier he got.

Who the heck was this girl to treat him like he was some kind of relative? He wasn't truly angry at her for being kind to him, no matter what her told himself. Dhiate wasn't mad at her in any sense of the word. He believed that she truly had a good heard and meant to do well. What he was really mad at was the thought of hurting her. He knew he probably wouldn't make it through the next few hours, and he also knew her kind. Even though they were strangers, she would still mourn him and that was one thing he couldn't stand. He would rather have the world hate him in life, than mourn him in death. He knew how to resolve this issue, and he didn't like it.

Dhiate close his slate blue eyes that grew darker and darker as he planned his own death. With a great intake of breath, he steeled himself for the pain to come. The very effort would most likely kill him, but it didn't matter. Almost in response to her inquiry of his state of being, he spaced his paws apart and rose to shaking limbs. His body wavered and threatened to collapse once more. He opened his eyes again. It made him sad to think of what was about to transpire, but it had to be done. Dhiate lowered his delicate head and his soot stained muzzle began to wrinkle, his brow to furrow. His lips rose in a snarl though no sound left him. Though his body spoke of pain and anger, his eyes were sorrowful. Knowing that a growl wouldn't be enough, Dhiate snapped at her and lunged weakly at her throat as if to kill. Get away from me! Can't you see I don't want you here? Do not mourn that which was unknown.

Kiara watched intently as the white male rose to his feet. His shaking limbs and rasping breath sending more pangs of worry through the alabaster women. Kiara placed herself low, ready to catch the injured wolf should he collapse again. The strength of will that he possessed astounded Kiara and was almost awe inspiring. Despite his evident exhaustion and the injuries he seemed to have sustained, the male seemed willing to continue on. At least that's how Kiara perceived his actions.

The males sudden anger and aggression startled Kiara. She jumped out of the way, his jaws missing their mark by a long shot. The male was weak, yet he wanted to fight her. Why? Why fight her? Kiara backed off a few paces and sustained a submissive position. Her ears flat against her head and her fluffy tail tucked squarely between her legs. Kiara was low to the ground and whined a little, trying to show the male she didn't want to fight him. The arctic wolf was never one to fight, but the males weakness gave her an advantage. One Kiara refused to take. If the male continued his aggression she would run off. Fighting her would be worse than not having her around and Kiara did not want to cause him any more pain.
