He didn't know: she didn't know. How could she? But she was glad, now. Despite his first impression, he had proven to be no mangy vagrant but a decent guy who had been genuinely hard done by. She dropped her head in a doggish shrug as he apologised, dismissing the sentiment. It was good to talk to someone: make an actual connection, even if it wasn't entirely amicable. Caspa was not so much an island, in general, as an iceberg: not only alone, but also cold, featureless and adrift at sea without so much as a penguin to keep her company. Today, it seemed, at least she had collided with a fellow floe.

Maybe her father had abused his power. But that was what it was for, and if one was strong enough to bow to power because it was for the greater good and the only defence against terror and anarchy, then one could not criticise too strongly. He had done nothing that was actually reprehensible, and all his actions had come from a place of love. Her mother, who had never done anything momentous in her life, was more to blame for the oppressive atmosphere at home than Caspa's father, in her opinion. She let these thoughts fall uselessly back where they came from (and good riddance) as Augustus gave her the run-down of his own ethical inheritance. It sounded basic, with some grey areas - who decided what the consequences were - but she supposed that in this case too the leaders had the final say, which was why the order was so important. Who chose leaders, anyway? Everywhere seemed to have a different method - she still had no idea exactly how Vigilante had claimed the Cour throne, not that he didn't deserve it. "I applaud your pack's understanding of the natural balance," she answered rather slowly. "That is the part that often gets lost." Probably because it meant utterly different things to everybody. To Caspa's people, the natural balance was the word of their God. She could not fathom that another place's natural balance might have been different but equally valid - or more valid, more likely.

"Well, now we've had dinner and discovered the meaning of life," she said finally, "What happens next? If you need a home for the winter, my pack's borders are open." She hadn't quite meant to go so far with her hospitality, but it seemed her good-will and fellow-feeling was at an all time high today.

He was relieved that she did not presume to offer more insight on his ramblings, if she had the end result would have been equally unsatisfactory to the both of them. It seemed he was finding a kindred spirit in the dog hybrid, if not more. Something about her mannerisms made him feel more at ease. She was not overly curious or invasive, and left him to his musings at times, careful not to delve too deeply into his inner workings. This was possibly the reason he’d opened up far more than if it had been someone else. He had enough by way of self- pity, and did not need a stranger to mourn over his woes. She hadn’t been even remotely fussy over his grisly visage- another plus. He was tired of the leery stares, and nursing they’d often attracted to him. He would bear these scars for the rest of his life.

For Lionel and Paru, the natural balance had meant keeping the populations of prey in check. What this meant was nothing more of less than hunting the plentiful, and leaving nothing to waste. Some months they would hunt rabbit on their own, other months they would feast on elk side by side. Lionel and Paru had met by chance, but later found themselves to be better together than a part. The Luperci were growing more abundant, and normal wolves lesser. They began to recruit others like themself into an opposing force. Better to thrive together than try at survival on their own. It was a newer pack, with older values. Challenges on leadership were open, creating an order that could be changed by a ceremonial confrontation. The winner would then take lead. Luckily, Lionel was both strong and cunning. When the new pack were sure of his might they no longer stepped forward and went on to live in harmony for a time- united into a mutual hatred of the bordering Luperci settlements. Augustus saw fit to leave these details out. He was not sure they applied here, still being somewhat newer to the area and unable to tell a Luperci from a normal canine. He nodded shortly, dipping his head but once.

He feigned thought before answering. I’d like to see you again. He said this low and slowly, careful not to sound alarming or too forward. His ears twitched suddenly at her offer to join her pack, if only for the winter. The thought was rather appealing. It would be pleasant not to struggle on a daily basis just to sustain himself. He mulled it over, thinking that it would depend on the nature of her pack. Could you take me there? He asked, lifting his head. His ears twitched forward. He would neither confirm or deny, though he felt a pull towards accepting, but he would see this place first.

It could have been thought sweet, his soft utterance of appreciation. Of course he would like to see her again. She had given him food and a willing if sarcastic ear. He was clearly a simple sort. But she didn't think him stupid, in any way. He was just a straightforward kind of wolf. She could not encourage such an admission though and her face remained impassive. It was good that he would consider such a thing. Solitude was not often a sensible position to be in, and it was clear from his history that he had grown up in a stable pack, so knew the ropes. She saw no reason he would not be welcomed to the Cour, and it would certainly do him the world of good to have others around him and a place to rest and get fed up and cleaned up a little. "I can take you there. Not inside the borders at first. That would be the leaders' decision." Obviously enough, but perhaps she hadn't explained her lowly status previously. "I cannot get you over that fence though. And I can't come with you to find a gap, as I have a journey to make Northwards." Caspa sighed. She would just have to give him directions and hope that he had enough intelligence to find it, perhaps. She could see no other way through the dilemma.

She'd refused to reply to his foremost statement, but he didn't take offense. On the contrary, he was relieved that she hadn't taken it negatively, either. They had come much further than he ever would have believed, had it been earlier she would have resented the sentiment entirely. His gratitude was hugely apparent, and he was sure that it was not entirely lost on her. He needn't say more on the subject, but was hopeful for the future. Their paths were sure to cross again.

He nodded shortly in agreement, he knew better than most the procedure for joining a pack, having had to bear witness to several such occurrences in the past. As it should be, he confirmed. The black-saddled male couldn't help but feel a slight quiver of uncertainty at the thought of having another canine pass judgement over him. What if he was evaluated and found wanting? He set his mouth firmly and vowed to himself that it would not be the case- not this time.

I will find a way. He replied assuredly. The male rose to all fours and held his tail confidently. Just point the way. His eyes wandered to the lands beyond, wondering just what awaited him. He turned his head with his gaze wistfully before a single charcoal rimmed ear twitched back. Where are you heading? He asked absently curious. It was a good diversion from the events that would follow. He'd have plenty of time to think on them later.

over'n out! I wonder if he'll even try to go there lol.

She wagged her tail slowly. It was good he would make the attempt, but a shame she could not help him further. Caspa turned so her shoulders faced the opposite direction to the fence. "I should continue to the north, along the fence until you find a gap. Then, head east - the way I am going now. After a few hours run, turn towards the south, and you will come to the forest edge. Follow the forest boundary, where the trees meet the open land, until you reach the borders of Cour des Miracles." He would know it from her own scent, of course. "I am going back there, and then... I am going hunting in the forest to the north." Not strictly a lie - her moral code did not allow untruths - but of course, she did not mean she was hunting prey. She was hunting somebody who wanted to be found. Caspa thought it best to keep her arrangements with Denver secret for now. It was safer for him that way. "I will leave you a trail on the forest edge so you know you are on your way. May your journey be swift," she wished, brushing a paw down the irritating fence so that it rattled, then about-turned and loped in her straight-legged way away over the thin covering of autumn-fallen leaves.

He nodded shortly and listened attentively to her directions, taking care not to forget them later. He was quiet all the while, picturing the path in his mind’s eye. The toughest part would be the cursed fence. Anything beyond it was sure to give him no trouble, her scent would be more apparent there, and it was sure to lead the way. Cour des Miracles. He said slowly, it felt foreign on his tongue. He didn’t bother questioning her further, being entirely satisfied with the reply he received. He had no former knowledge of her agenda, and it did not bother him at all. It did strike him as odd that she would go for a hunt after already having eaten. His heart sank a little, perhaps she had eaten a lesser portion for his own well-being. He was grateful, but chided himself for being greedy.

And yours. He replied. He watched her lope away, admiring her pelt as it rippled and shone with her long strides. When she was nearly out of sight he set his gaze on the fence and the lands beyond. He sighed and steeled himself before taking his first steps towards the Court. Moments later he fell into a gallop and disappeared from sight, becoming nothing more than a black and white blur.
