digging through the rubble

Keshi, as usual, had provided a comfortable ride to the city. Odessa wore her cloak around her shoulders, though as the sun was shining, she thought not to pull the hood up, instead letting it rest on her shoulders. The riding rug was now clean and then red woven item sat proudly on the geldings back. The girl had brought larger saddle bags with her, because in hindsight, she thought to collect some personal things. More medical books, more pots and tubs, more things for working in the garden. Although she was not heading for the gardener co-rank, tending herbs in the garden and treating pack members ailments went hand in hand.

She had dismounted Keshi some time ago, letting him follow her of his own accord. Odessa clambered through a large broken store front window, leaving the pied horse outside. The shop was almost bare, shelves and other random objects littered the floor in untidy heaps. This shop had clearly been ravaged by others before Odessa herself had arrived. Never the less, the premesis was large and Odessa could still see useful object strew about below her as she made her way through the rubble. Kneeling down carefully, she picked up flat pieces of concrete, moving them to the side. Underneath it she found a choice find, a mortar. It was a large dark grey marble thing, pocked with small white markings. Granted it was slightly shipped around the edges, cracked lightly in the concaved middle and had collected an impressive amount of dust in it, it was still enough to make Odessa smile. She lifted it out and sat it beside her. If she had found the mortar then, or at least she assumed, the pestle would be close by. The medic lifted up more pieces of concrete, wire and metal, before finding the object. 'There' she said content at her find. Unlike it's dish shaped counterpart, the pestle seemed in fine condition.

The mottled girl stood, grasping the objects with her dainty hands. Odessa moved out of the window again, pacing over to Keshi, who was standing staring aimlessly up the street. Placing the objects in the saddle bags and stepping back, Odessa took a pause from her work, noting that she'd be here some time and wishing someone else where here.

Curious Terra sniffed the air. It was smaller than the city her pack had played in, and smelled of the sea. The buildings were a lot shorter too, which meant they'd be in better condition. A pup her age had died exploring one of the taller buildings when it had collapsed. Terra hadn't been there to witness it, but since then she refused to enter a building taller than two floors. Stepping through the rubble she noted that plants were starting to grow around the buildings, fighting to reclaim the land the concrete had taken over. Nosing into it Terra grabbed a handful of the grass and swallowed it.

She sniffed the air again, noticing another canine's scent. Stealthily she crept over, peering into a shop window. Staring back at her was a wolf. Startled Terra leaped back in fright. She hadn't been expecting the wolf to be looking through the window. Her fur was completely ruffled now, puffed from fear. Growling to herself Terra tugged on her fur, trying to smooth it back into place before turning to look at the wolf. She smelled rather like the other one she'd run into, making her question if they were pack mates. It didn't really matter to her either way. Hello. What are you doing? The wolf was in optime form, but Terra didn't really feel like leaving her lupine form. If any shifting was going to happen, it'd probably be to secui form for a fight.

Odessa hadn't been paying attention when the other had approached, a with a startled whip around, startling Keshi too, she frowned at the stranger. 'You scared the life out of me' she noted dryly, petting Keshi softly. The horse lowered his head, sniffing at the stranger. The mottled girl turn around, moving across the broken store front again, skimming her leg across the bottom. The section was void of glass, much to the girl's relief, after a moment of pause she swung her other leg into the shop. 'To answer your question, I'm looking for things'. When out of Salsola her temperment changed, instead of being meek and gentle, she forced herself to 'bite' more. Because, in the end, it was a hell of a lot more dangerous for her in the city than back home. At home, when she was good, she was safe, but fate didn't give a rat's ass wheter you were nice or not in the city.

The mottled girl knelt down again, sifting through the rubble again. Most things she came across were unremarkable and held little intrest to Odessa, who threw them to the side, save for the more breakable things which she placed aside carefully, after all, one person's just in another persons treasure.

Terra pushed the horse away. She wasn't interested in being sniffed by food. The pack traditions of keeping horses were strange to her, and it drove her crazy that she couldn't eat them. Watching the wolf carefully step in Terra looked at the store. It didn't seem particularly special, just another bunch of human rubbish. Leaping in Terra landed beside the wolf, nosing at the pile of stuff she'd put aside. Most of it was various empty bottles and cases, but there was the faint scent of something else.

She stepped around, sniffing the air. The scent was strange, completely new to her. It smelled like a dying plant, but wispy like smoke. Terra followed the scent to a back corner, uncovering a small broken jar. She was lucky she hadn't cut herself on the glass. The plant was inside, dry and clingy. I found something. Terra didn't know if the wolf would be interested in her find, but it was definitely something strange. Sticking her tongue out Terra licked the plant, only to recoil in disgust. Who would want that?

As the stranger pushed Keshi'd head away, he stumbled backwards, whinnying frustratedly and raising himself upon on his hind legs a few inches, he look almost menacing. Odessa quickly calmed him, placing a gentle hand on his rounded snout and pulling his head towads the ground, stopping him from bolting again. 'Watch it' she said, her voice soft but with a warning edge to it. The pied gelding's large brown eyes flickered between the girl and his rider, unable to comprehend why two such similar beings were so different to him. The girl returned to her work swiftly, nudging the horse away, him happy to trot away with little more than a nervous glare.

The girl spoke again, holding up a plant. She proceeded to lick it only for Odessa to rush over. Clambering easily over the debries, she took the plant from the girl and held it to her chest. 'Don't lick it. You have no idea what it is...' she stared at the plant, deducing it was a sickly spider plant. 'It could be poisionous...' she noted as an after thought. It was a viattum variety if she wasn't incorrect. Thinking back about what she'd read, only as a passing referance to her poison's work, 'It's only poisonous if it's bitten...' she finished calmly. 'Are there any more around?' she asked, because if it was poisonous it would aid her greatly in her research.

Only poisonous if bitten? Terra backed rapidly away from the plant, not reassured in the slightest. Hanging out her tongue she tried to scrape the stuff off. She really didn't want to die from licking some plant. Not only would it probably be painful, it was an awfully embarrassing way to go. I don't know. Why would you want that stuff? The only reason Terra could imagine wanting something poisonous was if she was planning on killing someone. Few creatures deserved that fate; well, bears excluded from that. Did the girl have a job where she supplied killing tools? It would be a rather interesting career. While Terra wouldn't choose that for herself the excitement involved made her want to see what it was like living like that for a day.

Terra grinned at the wolf's silly pose. She was cradling the plant as if it was a newborn pup. The idea was silly, one that would have made her laugh if she didn't have the image of dropping dead stuck in her mind. I won't die from it, will I? The girl seemed to know more about this stuff than she did. It would be nice to told she wouldn't drop dead, or be in agonizing pain. Until she learned that Terra wasn't going to move one inch.

Odessa found herself giggling as the girl attempted to scrape the non existant poison from her tounge. 'Because,' Odessa began slowly, inspecting the plant, 'Some beings can see beauty in things like this'. She cast a stern halloween eye over the golden girl before returning to the plant. It was pretty, or at least it would be when she had given it enough care and attention to revive the thing. It wouldn't take too long, she supposed. Spider plants were notorious for their hardiness and difficulty to kill off. The plant had done well with only drips of water from the cracked roof as food, same for the poor sunlight access through the small pockmark holes in the roof.

'No' Odessa answered, no real emotion in her voice. 'I said it was only deadly if bitten...' she noted, frustratedly. She had just said it so why had she just had to repeat herself. Brushing her annoyance aside, she continued to search for anything useful. 'What are you looking for?' Odessa asked, honestly curious. Perhaps she could help, she was enternally eagle eyed.

The girl actually thought she was looking for something! For Terra, coming to the city was to find potential areas for traps and pick up interesting trinkets to take back as souvenirs. Still, she supposed she'd need some kind of purpose for being there, and Terra wasn't about to tell the girl she was looking for good ambushing spots. I'm looking for a gift for a friend. That could easily come true. Shandom usually was by himself, so something to cheer him up would be nice. Her other friend Liam could use medical supplies and whatnot. As for herself, well, it would preferably be something difficult to break.

The idea now firmly routed in her head Terra found herself thinking about what would be nice to pick out. Shandom could use something to cheer him up, and he's a bit of a military guy. Liam could use some new medical stuff as thanks for patching me up. The names slipped out before Terra had even considered whether or not she should mention them. After all, she didn't even know the girl's name. Terra shook her head. It was done, and she'd deal with the consequences as they happened.

The words seemed like lies. But never the less they rang true, even if it was a slight taint. 'A gift?' Odessa repeated, she was about to ask what kind of gift, but Terra answered her before she could reply. 'Perhaps a weapon of some sort?' she supplied. She scanned the floor quickly, medical stuff was hard to come by, most of it was already taken long before. Odessa knew this, as it was medical and cookery essentials (to some extent) that she was on the look out. 'Hmm, you may have trouble there... If you could find a book store maybe you could find a medical volume?' she suggested, stroking one of the plant's leaves.

The girl's headshake didn't go unnoticed, possible due to the mistake of revealing her friends names. Honestly, Odessa couldnt give a damn who her friends were, but she was still cautious about helping her find a weapon. Even if it was for a friend. She could easily use it on Odessa, and her own pocket knife was no match. She decided to focus on finding something to do with medical stuff, though if there was something choice she didn't yet have, it was surely hers.

A book? The idea was a revelation for her. She'd been taught that books contained usefull information, but Terra had never read one herself. Only the scraps the dog had scribbled out for her to read was what Terra had read. Excited at the idea Terra paced around, careful to avoid the scattered glass. A book could be exactly what they both need! One to help Liam learn medical stuff, and one to tell Shandom stories! Terra paused at that. Can books tell stories? She'd been told they held vast words of information, and Terra had assumed that included stories. Not all stories were true though.

Terra glanced around the shop, sniffing the air for the musty scent books carried. There were none there, so Terra leaped back into the streets. She checked the air again, this time smelling the must. She couldn't tell much about where it came from, as the scent was very faint. Patiently Terra walked the street, trying to locate the source. She looked behind to see if the girl was still there. Are you coming? She was sure if they managed to locate the books it would be what they were looking for.

Odessa followed the stranger out of the building, still clutching the half dead plant. Keshi, in turn, followed her. He kept his body close to Odessa's own, still wary of the strange female. He still couldn't fathom why his mistress was speaking nicely to someone who virtually assaulted him. Of at least that was what he thought, but in truth it was simply a rough shove away. Odessa hadn't made much fuss over it, she knew that some people did not enjoy the company of animals and even though she did not know why or how, she accepted it. Keshi still assumed that everyone liked horses as he had never been treated bad in Salsola. Except by Llarkspur and even then it had not been true cruelty and his everyday cared weighted up against that one painful task he fufilled on him.

Odessa simply nodded to Terra's questions. Finding no real reason to vocalise something so simple. She veered away from Terra, knowing which way she was going, she didn't mind leaving Terra without any words of parting. If the girl was smart she'd follow on. The medic, after finding plenty of books, knew the was by heart. It was an old store room one the decrepid second floor of a building. Odessa held a light form so navigating the rotten floorboards was a simple task. A story book and a medical journal, easy things to find if you knew where to look. The store was in sight now and with a sharp girl of 'Girl, over here' she quickened her pace. The medic didn't know the girls name, nor did she care because she was certainly not going to divulge her own title. It was only a small jump for D'Angelo to Salsola. Even so it felt strange to call someone girl as in likely case Terra probably held more years in her than Odessa, perhaps even more than Salvia and Pandemic.

Terra easily caught up with the wolf, entering the store after her. She gazed around in awe. Terra knew books held information, but the idea that there was so much out there was shocking. Terra had assumed at the most there was maybe a shelf full of all the books in the world out there. She hadn't figured on there being books about things that didn't involve her life. Stories and medical stuff was easy, because that was part of her life. Things outside of that, like places she'd never been to, hadn't even registered. Sure, she understood that there was more in the world than she'd seen. Terra just hadn't actually put it into actual thoughts.

Carefully she picked her way through the rotten boards, looking at the titles. Terra's reading skills were poor, only being able to make out words with three syllables at the most, and those tended to be words like 'happily'. She looked at the books, pretending she knew what she was doing. Terra had no idea how to pick out a healing book, or identify one with stories. There's certainly a lot. What do you suggest? Terra pulled out a book that had caught her attention, a blue one with faded gold embroidery.

Odessa shrugged, delicately manouvering over the thin beams with ease, easy to become jealous of. She kept her arms crossed as she replied, her plant clutched carefully with a secure hand, her words were simply and honest. 'I don't know, depends on what stories and how in depth and complex you want the medical journals'. She ended her speech as she started her speech, with a casual shrug, it was almost subconsious, something to fill the gaps in the conversation. Moving on a little more, Odessa knelt down on the stronger, more surfaced areas of the second floor, placing the spider plant down beside her carefully. Her thin had began rummaging in the boxes. Most of the books were water damage, eaten away by vermine or other wise illegible. Though as she continued her work she began to search in the over turned boxes and did find a few that weren't damaged.

One caught her eye, it was a blue covered book based on healing naturally, using, well, nature of course. It was one of the things she was always on the lookout for so she slipped it into her bag quickly, before collecting up her collection of suggestions. 'What about these?' she question softly. One was a copy of a book she already owned, 'Canine Ailments', another was titled 'Canine Remedies'. The final book was a large book, a collection of fairytales. It was in fairly good condition and so Odessa offered the three titles up to Terra.

The girl's movements did not go unnoticed. Terra had realized the girl knew about medical stuff when she snatched the plant from her. Seeing the book tucked into the bag made her suspicious it might be something she wanted, especially considering how sneakily the wolf had stuffed it in. If the girl had just taken the book and placed it in, Terra might have warranted it as something she wouldn't find interesting. The attempts to hide it, though, made her suspicious.

Her face didn't give away these thoughts though as Terra moved over to examine the books the girl held out. The largest book was very pretty, something that stood out from the others. It suggested a world beyond their own, allowing Terra to pick it out as the selection of stories. Looking at the other books Terra picked out the one with remedies in the title, as she knew that involved fixing stuff and ailments was a word she didn't know.

Terra couldn't just carry them in lupus form though. Stepping back Terra gracefully shifted into her optime form, the fur lengthening as her bones moved around in her body. Done she grabbed an old bag off the floor and stuffed the two books she'd selected into them. They're quite nice. I'm sure my friends will like them. Thank you! Terra clasped the girl's hand as she said this, keeping the attention away from what her other hand was doing. Deftly she swiped into the bag and palmed the blue book into her own. Releasing the girl Terra stepped back. I should get going now. Thanks.

Odessa nodded, thinking of her home also. She really should have been back a while ago and though she was practically an adult, both in the pack ranking system and ability, she prefered to stay on packlands a lot. It was really only by Salsola's guidelines she adhered to. Point was she had unsaid allowance to stay out for days. But it would never get her notice as useful to the pack, no matter what she did or brought back.

'Yes, me too' Odessa hummed, leaning down to collect her own belongings almost forgetting to account for the weight of the additional book, along with her various other findings and the plant pot in her other hand, before she picked it up. It didn't unbalance her much and despite the extra strain on her shoulder she stood and continued. 'I'm glad I could aid you in your search. I hope your friend like the books'. Odessa moved gracefully over the beams and disappeared down the stairs.

Keshi, of course, awaited below. Grazing lazily on the grass that had overtaken the concrete jungle. Green shoots burst out from cracks in the grey brick work, slightly sickly looking as it was, of course, winter. Mounting the gelding carefully, she rode home, satisfyed with her finds.
