</style>For Tedros. Big Grin Tentatively backdated to the 12th, if that's alright with Crystal c:

Anathema had proven a welcome retreat from the city, but a two night vacation could not undue months of relative pressure and confinement. He wasn't ready to go back to those cold, blocky structures he called home just yet. It wasn't that he felt dispassionate about his little corner of Halifax — nay, he was rather fond of it: the privacy; the gardens' vivacious summertime colours; the sweet perfume of lavender and sage that permeated the entire area, spring through autumn; the way the light glistened from Naniko's crystals; the supernatural glow of the fireflies, Jack O'Lantern mushrooms, and his Dyakia snails; even the reward of effort well spent in grounds maintenance and construction — but now there was no work to be done, and the plants were withered and wasted for winter. While the greenhouses thrived year-round and he always had his watchdogs' company, it wasn't enough to hold him over all season.

And so, Barry passed the nights following his stay in the mountainside pack under the stars. In the waning daylight hours he ambled aimlessly through the forest, often high on some drug or another. This morning, he awoke at the base of a naked oak on a bed of dried leaves. He squinted with citrine eyes at the sun, trying to discern the rough time of day based on its position. It was shortly before noon. The hybrid yawned and peered lazily at his surroundings — what would this day bring? The two past felt like a blur. Before he could piece something together, his stomach spoke for him. It gurgled with such vigour he supposed any food in the area might hear it and clear out before he even got a chance to hunt, but the lonely song of a solitary bird continued undaunted, reassuring him his imagination was simply over-active. He rose quietly to his feet — a lethargic, drawn out action — and shook some of the debris from his coat. It seemed to rouse his senses a bit, for a good whiff of the air told him two things: firstly that he was very near Inferni, and second, that a group of something edible and delicious was, too. Too bad alone and sort of hungover he probably wouldn't stand a chance.

Without another moment's pause, the quadruped marked the base of the tree (so he could locate the backpack strung up in it later) and turned north in the direction of the clan. Maybe Zeke (or Valkyrie or Sage or whoever) would be down for a hunt — the animals were technically on neutral grounds, so it couldn't hurt to ask.

yayyy! Big Grin and the backdating works for me. :3 also, wasn't sure what form he was in, so i went with lupus.

WORD COUNT → 393

It had been a long morning already. The previous night he had finally returned home from his road trip. Tedros had needed some time to get readjusted to things. The Inferni scent that now hugged his body like an old friend had suffocated him in memories, and the few days away had helped incredibly. Meeting others, new wolves, had helped him understand that this place wasn’t the place he left behind. This was a new world, and a world he could function in.

Last night, Tedros barely made it into his room before passing out. He was in shape, and strong, but traveling for two days straight after a month of traveling and emotional stress would be hard on the fittest of wolves. When he awoke, the sun had been in the sky for less than an hour, and he shifted into lupus form once he got outside. The Mansion grounds felt cold and damp under his paws, but it felt good to be on all fours for the first time in a while.

He spent the next few hours wandering through the fields of Inferni, trotting along the borders to get a sense of this new territory. Every so often he’d see another wolf skull on a stick and Teddy would frown at their attempts to ward others away. Maybe it was menacing to some, but to Tedros, it was only a sad reminder of the racism he’d seen as a child. The pack was full of hybrids now. Should they really be lining their borders with skulls of their ancestors?

The sun was almost directly overhead when he smelled them. There were deer just south of the border. Tedros hadn’t eaten a decent meal in what seemed like forever, but he had left his new bow at home and wasn’t about to run back and get it now. And then he noticed the other scent, distinctly not Inferni, distinctly not coyote.

Tedros Talik’s new rank made the decision to investigate easy, trotting out towards the smell, staying quiet as he passed the herd. The wolf was a mottled color, blending in with the foliage and tree trunks that surrounded him. Once he was close enough, Tedros flicked his tail and said, “Any reason you’re heading towards Inferni territory?” It wasn’t a vicious question, nor was it accusatory. Tedros was simply curious.

Big Grin Yarp. My bad, sorry for not being more specific XD

Barrett's charcoal ears pivoted independently to capture any interesting sounds originating from both behind and ahead. He knew the deer were in the midst of their rut — their screeching bellows weren't particularly subtle. By the sound of it, the dominant male of this particular harem had a challenger. Good. That meant they wouldn't be going anywhere any time soon, and it meant the rest of the herd would be distracted. The forceful, hollow clack of colliding antlers signalled the battle's commencement and instilled a sense of urgency in the hungry predator. The chestnut hybrid was not intimately familiar with the dramatic rituals of the ungulates; he wasn't sure how long this window of opportunity would last. Fortunately, it didn't take long to find somebody — or rather, for somebody to find him.

That somebody was a petite, sandy male with eyes not unlike his mother's or grandfather's. For a fleeting instant the loner wondered if they might be related. It wasn't wholly implausible; he understood a hearty chunk of Inferni's membership to possess de le Poer blood, which certainly favoured those deep garnet eyes. But no, nothing else fit. As the distance between them shrank, the contrast in size between the two males grew. The stranger wasn't much shorter than Ezekiel, but Inferni's blond Aquila still had considerable weight on this fellow. Barry was so used to encountering hybrids in these parts that he was surprised to see a seemingly pure coyote. Not that this observation moved him much one way or the other — if anything, it just made it a little harder to submit.

Nevertheless, he did his best: he lowered into a humble crouch with his gaze averted politely to the other male's paws. Even then, he stood nearly half a foot taller; to further emphasise his good intentions, he swung his mottled tail thrice and dropped his ears to half-mast. Given how irate Halo was the last time he passed through, he wasn't taking any chances. Luckily, the scout seemed more curious than hostile. Hey, he greeted quietly, casting a cursory glance over his shoulder in the direction of the feuding bucks. Wanted to see if Zeke was around 'n interested in all that, he explained before looking back to his companion. But I dunno how much time we've got. You want to grab a bite? he wondered, head tipping slightly to the right. I'm Barry, he added quickly, as if his name might persuade the older male to join him. Poer de Aika XIII.

It has been a ridiculously long time since I've RPed a hunt scene. >__>

NOT SO TOUGH FOUND OUT

Tedros’ previous pack was predominantly wolf. He had held a high position amongst the ranks simply because of how long he had been there. But like most average wolf packs, submission and dominance was key to the success of the hierarchy. But back here, in Inferni, such signs were not as commonplace. He himself had shown submission to Ezekiel at the border only for it to be shrugged off as wolf-only behavior. So when this muddled-hued wolf – who was more than twice his weight, and less than half his age – started submitting to the Praeses, he couldn’t help but chuckle a little bit. A smile crossed his maw and Ted motioned his head upwards, communicating that it wasn’t necessary.

He stated his purpose; or, at least, some vague explanation as to why he was around. The Aquila name-drop was enough for Tedros to relax from his border duties. Although he knew he shouldn’t trust everything a stranger said, Barry (as he introduced himself) seemed to be a pretty relaxed guy. Tedros Talik had met his fair share of canines with evil intentions along the borders of his previous pack, and Barry didn’t show any of the normal signs of knavery. Besides, he wanted company. What could go that wrong if Tedros was with him the entire time?

“I haven’t seen Ezekiel around this morning,” Tedros said honestly, eyes focusing on the other’s face. His stomach growled loudly. “But I’m glad you’re here. I haven’t eaten a decent meal in weeks.” The coyote shifted his weight, raising his nose into the air to get a better smell of their soon-to-be lunch. “My name’s Tedros Talik,” the Praeses added.

He maneuvered his body so he was facing the direction of the herd, trotting quietly until he was close enough to see the individual deer. Together, the wolf and coyote had a much better chance of killing a deer, but it was still going to be a challenge. Tedros considered shifting into his Halfling form, but decided to discuss their tactics first. Sometimes stealth was more important than strength.

“I say we go for the doe on the edge of the pack,” he whispered to the other, waiting to hear any other ideas.

@_@ This made me check... I haven't directly played one out since June myself, apparently. I don't believe it's almost the end of November already X____x Wtf, time. D: Also, feel free to powerplay whatever :3

What coyote blood coursed through the hybrid's veins was very dilute. The effects it held over his physique and psyche were subtle, but not absent: his ebony ears stood a smidge higher than the average wolf's; his build was relatively lean; and he was disinclined to desperately entrench himself in pack life. He actually preferred the rogue lifestyle he'd lead for the past several months — prioritising personal projects, coming and going as he pleased — but some wolfish instincts were undeniable. (Submission, for example, was a great way to keep the peace.) Others were simply convenient. Cooperative hunting efforts were much more successful on average, but he, too, recognised that they were not necessarily guaranteed a meal. Barry knew he wasn't on top of his game; by the sound of it, Tedros wasn't either.

Nevertheless, working as a unit with some plan of attack, their prospects were a little brighter. The mocha male's tail swung optimistically as the amicable Infernian offered his name — a silent kind of Well met. With that, the duo were off. They hastened quietly through the thin undergrowth and paused when they reached a good vantage point. The bucks were still engaged in combat as the rest of the herd grazed or looked on. The straggler Tedros mentioned seemed like a good target — she would be easy to separate from the others. And was that a slight limp he detected? He nodded in confirmation after scanning the other animals for any signs of weakness. Maybe I can head further downwind and you can try 'n splice 'er off and send 'er my way? he proposed in a hushed voice.

It was nothing original, but there wasn't anything wrong with sticking to tried and true tactics. And although Barry was surprisingly quick on his feet, he assumed it was more sensible for him to lay in ambush than Tedros. He also reckoned the halfling's additional bulk could prove advantageous, but he would capitalise on the natural form's stealth until he was in position. He waited with bated breath for a go-ahead from the tawny Praeses — in anticipation of the impending hunt, his body began to pump up adrenaline production. With every fibre of his being, he was ready to go.

IKR? I still can't believe Ted is 6 years old. >__> Or that I'm in college. Also, PP Teddy to your desire as well!

YOU'RE HERE AND THEN YOU'RE GONE

His red eyes watched hungrily as the two bucks continued to clack their large antlers together. As they were the only two bucks around, Tedros felt a little better about their hunting strategy. The male deer were distracted, fighting amongst themselves for power, and that one weaker deer was grazing farther and farther away from the herd. Ted licked his lips out of habit, his claws kneading eagerly at the dirt beneath him.

The red-hued coyote nodded slightly at Barry’s proposal. It was basically the same thing Tedros had had in mind anyway. He was faster, and smaller, in this form, perfect for herding a weakened doe towards a deadly trap. Tedros made eye contact with his new acquaintance, signaling that it was time. The dark-toned wolf took off to the right, sneaking silently away from the herd. The coyote’s gaze returned quickly to the doe, making sure she wasn’t catching a hint of what was going on. But everything seemed to be working out – she was, again, a few feet farther from the rest of the herd. The two bucks continued to pay attention solely to their lust for power. Tedros knew then that it would cost them a member of their herd.

He smirked, making sure Barry was far enough downwind before readying his body. And like a bullet, he took off, running faster than he had in weeks. The rest of the herd scattered quickly, the bucks hesitating with their antlers interlocked before protecting the majority of the herd. But Tedros wasn’t interested in them; he went straight for the slow target. She was moving now, splitting off from the herd. Once he was close enough, Tedros began nipping at her ankles, teeth bared, pushing her closer and closer to Barry’s scent. This was almost too easy.

Sorry about the wait, this past week was chaotic and then my brain sorta shut down and refused to write x_x Anyway, in light of the huge hunting discussion, I decided to play it as if this drug out a little, hope that's okay XD

Barry tiptoed carefully through the scraggly underbrush and wriggled his way in between two woody tree trunks; here he would likely remain undetected until it was too late. Among fallen leaves and barren branches, his coat provided nearly perfect camouflage. As an added bonus, a worn trail lie ahead — one the deer might very well use trying to escape. Now with suitable and strategic cover, he bunkered down to wait. Though the dark guard hairs along his belly contacted the cool earth, his position was anything but reposed — his muscles were taught like coiled springs ready to launch on a moment's notice.

Very slowly, he craned his neck to peer back at the herd. It was just in time to see Tedros launch the attack. As confusion and distress swept through the herd, the hybrid's tail twitched in anticipation. He watched as their target made two grave mistakes: she ran, and she did so further from the relative safety of the group. The coyote's nips were sending her right his way. Things were looking good. He settled back into position. The hoof-beats grew louder, raising to a cacophony in his head. When it seemed impossible to wait any longer, he sprang forward.

She didn't see it coming and paid in flesh and blood. His fangs dug into the tender skin of her underbelly and tore a two inch gash. Unfortunately, despite the pain running on an injured leg must've caused and the shock from his attack, she still had everything to lose. She changed course and left both canines hot in pursuit. Every so often she'd gain ground on them or duck into a thicket, but the metallic scent of blood was a dead give-away. They simply found her and struck again. Nearly a quarter mile later, her body could take no more. She slowed down and finally collapsed. Panting roughly, Barry trotted up to her side and flashed Tedros a winning grin.

Well finals were a kick in the ass. >_> Also, congratulations on your new job! Big Grin

YOU'RE HERE AND THEN YOU'RE GONE

The coyote ran, faster and faster. He could feel his heart pounding heavily in his chest, his paws making short, hard contact with the earth beneath him. Tedros Talik’s gait fell into place with hers as she began to slow down, his stride becoming an ectype of her own. Then, just at the opportune moment, he felt Barry burst out of the brush. Ted could hear male’s jaw clench onto her stomach, followed by the rewarding sound of tearing flesh and scent of a fresh meal. It was only then that their prey threw them off, changing directions in a way only a creature about to die could do. Her adrenaline was intense, but only spurred the hungry coyote’s speed.

The two canines never lost track of her scent. Her body eventually gave out, either due to exhaustion, blood loss, or a combination of the two. Ted’s new accomplice shot him a look of achievement as they approached their target. The coyote’s heart was still pounding, but he could feel it slowing as he came to a stop. Red colored eyes peered down at the doe, watching impatiently as her breath slowed. With another glance toward Barry, the coyote dug his teeth into her neck both to stop her suffering and to speed up their (quite literal) fast-food lunch.

Tedros continued to eat, feeding his body well for the first time in a while. ”It’s been a while since I’ve gotten any big game,” he said, mouth half-full of the warm, tender deer. Regardless of their teamwork, Ted felt like he owed the wolf a thank-you, but at the same time felt that it would be awkward. He hoped his statement showed enough gratitude. He began digging deeper into the carcass, his maw becoming a bloody mess. It was nice to feel the warm blood of a good meal on his lips again.

Thank you! Big Grin Hope finals went well ^^ Sorry if my brain short-circuits at all during this post x:

Once the sandy coyote finished her off, the hunters wasted no time digging in. Barry placed one large paw against her side to brace himself, then tore at the leathery skin and thick fur which concealed the prized inner organs. Historically, in situations like these, he'd take a modest half for himself — but Tedros' words made him think twice. He would only take a third. He nudged generous portions of liver, heart, and lungs Ted's way with his bloody snout, and at first, it seemed like a slight smile and a brief wag of his tail were all he had to say on the matter. He moved on to a meaty haunch after the choicest cuts were gone without a word.

But as his belly filled and his feeding became less frenzied, conversation seemed more manageable. Oughta keep an eye out for me and the boys, then, he suggested after gulping down a mouthful.
