Neela is in Lupus form. Post-Dated to December 1st

Neela padded eagerly through the streets of Westville, her nose, ears and neck constantly swivelling as she took in the sights and smells of the town. She had left Gampo Abbey for the frist time since joining Ichika no Ho-en two days ago, setting out on a trip to see some of the territory that she now lived in.

The place that she was in now was very interesting to the collie. The materials used in the buildings and the sheer scale of the place made it clear that this was a human town, yet the strong smell of Ichikan canines suggested that a fair amount fo her new pack mates lived in the area.

The small town that Neela had originally called home had been built from scratch by the Luperci that lived there, so the idea of living inside human houses was unusual to her, but interesting. Currently Neela was shifted into her lupus form, her belt and guitar tied to her back in a way that looked precarious and slightly ridiculous, but was fairly effective.

Neela was in her Lupus form to make use of its lower height. Specifically she was getting close to the ground to try and make better sense of the scent trails presented to her, trying to find a fresh trail so that she could find one of her new pack members. High above, but low enough to be easily visible, Grynn was circling around her in a wide lazy arc, also on the lookout for any canine life.

Still Neela was in a pretty good mood, despite her lack of success at finding company so far. Her thick fur cancelled out the slightly chilly weather and left her with a comfortable temperature, and she was enjoying exploring the Ichikan territory, her territory, she had to remind herself, still getting used to the idea of belonging to the pack.

Perfectly content with just wandering for a while Neela started to hum loudly as she walked, snatches of a song escaping her mouth between hums every now and then, though the words were indistinct they carried fairly well, her soft voice echoing across the quiet town.

Big Grin

The sharp yelp of a pup woke her from her sleep, she was immediately on the look out for a threat, her teeth bared and fur completely poofed out. She looked around wildly for the source of her child's cry, and was then confused when she could see no evident thread to them. Her gaze instead turned back down to her babies searching for the one that had cried. Three of them looked at her curiously, and also unsettled by their sibling's cry of pain. A fourth was curled up in the corner of the room whimpering quietly. It was Dalgina who had cried out, the all black spitting image of Temo looked up at her with eyes that were slowly fading from their puppyish blue to a deep brown just like Temo's. Her hackles and fur about her spine lowered slowly now that she had established that there was no danger, as safe as Ichika might be there was never a place completely devoid of danger for young pups.

The dog hybrid rose to her feet and reached down to pick the child up. Scared the pup reached out a paw to her for her to inspect and there Jace saw the cause of her pain. A splinter of wood was lodged in between the delicate pads on her feet and Jace held the girl close, hushing her to stop her squirming and holding her still, quickly removing the sliver of wood and licking the wound to bring out any residual pieces. The other three settled themselves back down together in a heap, the excitement already forgotten and within seconds all three were soon sound asleep again. Jace smiled with fondness and carried her daughter who she did not want to set down just yet out of the nursery. Temo was asleep on the bed in the master room after having somehow remained asleep through the cry which did make sense considering he had been awake with them all the previous night to give her a rest. She nudged him and told him she was going for a short walk, he grunted and relocated himself to the nursery, curling himself around their children. The sight made her heart thump proudly within her snowy chest, this was her family, now and forever.

She breathed deeply, pulling in the crisp air and exhaling it in a great shudder of breath. Her floppy ears twisted however as the sound of humming and a new scent reached her just before a doggish looking woman came into her view. Collie if she wasn't mistaken. The woman had her back to Jace so she let out a deep bark to alert the woman of her presence, perhaps a new friend to get involved with? Or if not merely an interesting discussion. Dalgina attempted to follow her mother's actions and let out a high pitched puppy yap. Her stubby tail wagged back and forth from her position in Jace's arms. Jace smiled at her child's mimicry.

The humming died on Neela's lips as a deep bark sounded from behind her, followed by a high-pitched noise that Neela couldn’t quite place. It seemed that company had managed to find Neela, rather than the other way around. Letting out a sharp whistle to call Grynn down from her search Neela turned around to see who had called her.

As she turned around she could see a multi-coloured Luperci off in the distance, who seemed to be carrying an indistinct black bundle that Neela couldn’t quite make out. Happy for the company Neela let out a soft but loud woof of greeting and began to trot over. As she did so she shifted from Lupus to Optime, deftly catching and putting on her belt and guitar as she did so.

"Hey there! I'm N-" Neela's friendly greeting was stopped short as she finally got close enough to recognise the small bundle for what it actually was, a puppy. Looking at the puppy sent a wave of sadness running through her, while the puppy that this stranger was carrying looked completely different, simply the sight of a mother and her pup reminded Neela of her own child, Leon.

A child that had tried to kill her just over four months ago, a child that had sworn that he would track her down and finish the job.

For the moment that it took her mind to process these thoughts a mixture of sadness, regret and a small amount of longing was clearly visible in her eyes as her gaze caught on the puppy, before she forcibly tore her eyes away and towards the females face, burying the melancholy feelings deep inside her mind and trying to bring her previous cheerfulness back up.

"Umm yeah, I'm Neela." Her previous cheerfulness and smile was back in full force, though there was a slightly forced undertone just barely visible and the smile hadn’t quite reached her eyes, which still held a tinge of sadness.

A whistle pierced the air and a dark shape fluttered down from the trees with tremendous speed, almost too quick for her mismatched eyes to follow. Only once it had slowed was Jace able to make out the shape of a bird as it landed on its presumed owner's shoulder. Multi toned head tilted to the side in a familiaris expression as the other sent back her bark to her. Tan tipped tail waved in the air loosely as the collieish woman began to make her way back to them. Jace herself settled into a slow walk towards her giving her ample time to complete the shift she started.

By the time they stood within speaking distance face to face they were both in Optime form and now Jace would see that she carried a guitar at her back. The musical instruments had always fascinated her although like with artwork Jace possessed no musical talents relative to her hands but instead had it contained within her voice, maybe sometime the pair of them could work on songs if this first meeting went well enough and the two found it within themselves to become friends but such hopes were getting ahead of herself for now and she returned the woman's greeting, lost enough in her thoughts that she didn't notice the others stutter when her eyes fell onto Dalgina. The child in question wriggling about extensively in her mother's arms trying to break free of the iron grip that held her airborne.

"Jace. Nice to meet you Neela. How long have you been a member of Ichika." As a higher ranking wolfess naturally her pose assumed this, her ears and tail higher and her muzzle tilted slightly. But there was no real intention within the gestures, just subconscious posturing on her part. Her grandly flicking tail a testament to her good intentions.

Neela was grateful that the other canine hadn’t noticed her slip, it would have raised questions that she didn’t really want to talk about to explain her reaction, or the mother might even have mistaken it for an insult or threat towards her child, which wouldn't have ended well.

Neela noticed the discreet signs of dominance that Jace was showing as she returned her greeting and responded in kind, her head and eyes dropping the slightest fraction, just a small amount but enough to notice if that was what the other female was looking for. "I'm new to the clan," she began, her voice formal and slightly stiff compared to before; the show of dominance had left her a little unsure as to her standing with the woman, "I landed my ship near the borders by mistake just over a week ago and ended up joining."

Neela lapsed off awkwardly, studying the other woman's body language carefully. Despite the dominance the woman's wagging tail seemed to indicate friendliness, so when Neela spoke her voice was once again light and friendly, "Wh-" Just as she started talking she was cut off by a shifting on her shoulder. While Jace hadn’t noticed Neela's distress Grynn certainly had. The falcon had her eyes fixed on Jace's child and was leaning forward, her wings half-spread and flexing as though she was about to take off.

With a sharp "Grynn!" Neela's hand shot up to her shoulder to rest in the birds foot, trapping her on her shoulder. While Grynn hadn’t meant any harm, at most she would have been wanting to fly closer to get a better look at the child, Neela doubted that a mother would appreciate having a falcon fly at her child. For her part Grynn gave a slight apologetic noise, which was as much as Neela was likely to get out of her, but continued unashamedly staring at the child.

"Sorry about that. Grynn's a bit to curious for her own good sometimes." Neela was embarrassed by her partner's behaviour, and slightly worried about Jace's possible reaction, though she tried to hide her worry behind friendliness, or at least she would if she could think of something o say. Not wanting to remain silent for too long Neela blurted out something about the first thing that popped into her mind. "Might I ask what the little one's name is?"

She was aware that her posturing made the woman a little nervous and so her wagging tail seemed to help her overcome that. She wasn't doing it on purpose and now that Neela had acknowledged that Jace was superior in rank her own body language settled down a bit. The part about a ship brought a curious look to her face, how extraordinary! Jace herself had never been in a ship on the water, just the idea was enough to make her shudder inside, the water really wasn't for her but this woman had managed it alone,

"Wow that's really brave of you. I couldn't have done that myself. I don't like the water" She admitted with a wry grin. Dalgina soon grew bored of the conversation she couldn't understand and instead stared back at the feathery thing on the woman's shoulder, it stared right on back. Jace was suddenly made aware as well of the bird focused intently on her child. She turned away, showing her shoulder to the woman and her companion whilst hiding her child from sight, a growl making it's way up her throat, and lips pulling back to reveal ivory teeth. Dalgina herself was unperturbed by the bird's attentions and whined in complaint when their staring contest was cut off.

Jace eyed the bird coldly, unwilling to show her child to the bird of prey again she kept her body tilted awkwardly. The growl slowly rumbled to silence and black gummed lips receded over sharp fangs but now she was tense and aggravated, sure that the bird was going to swoop towards her at any moment and try to take the girl from her arms, such was the senseless and overwhelming protectiveness of a mother.

"Her name is Dalgina." Her words were short and clipped, a world different from the easy tone of just a few seconds ago.

Neela was shocked by the aggressiveness in Jace's reaction toGrynn; having been around the bird for over two years it had been a long time since Neela had felt anything close to intimidated by Grynn, and it hadn't occurred to her that the bird might actually be a credible threat to a puppy.

Quickly she backed off half-a-dozen paces and turned her head to Grynn, "Grynn, go do some hunting please." she said quickly, prompting a squawk of anger from the bird, who had been enjoying her staring contest with the interesting little puppy. In response Neela let out a long piercing whistle, followed by several clicks and whistles of varying lengths. It wasn't perfect Low Speech, Neela being unable to make some of the more subtle noises, but it was close enough for Grynn, and most birds of similar species, to understand.

It took Neela about 20 seconds to explain the situation in more depth to Grynn before repeating her request, all in low speech. This time Grynn simply nodded and gave her an affectionate peck to the ear before directing a caw of farewell towards the puppy and launching herself off of Neela's shoulder. Neela's eyes followed her and the collie noted that Grynn had wisely chosen to fly off behind Neela, leaving the bird perfectly visible to Jace as she headed towards the nearby forest.

That taken care of Neela quickly turned her attention pack to Jace, dropping down onto one knee as she did so. Until she had figured out exactly who she had pissed off submission seemed to be the best course of action. Neela lowered her head, ears and tail while letting out a low whimper, all the while racking her brains to think if she had forgotten anything; being mostly dog the instincts of submission were not as strong in Neela and she had to make a conscious effort to remember them.

Nose all but buried in her fur Neela tried to calm the angry mother down, "I'm sorry. Grynn didn't mean any harm, she was just curious, she would never hurt a puppy." Neela paused a second, before continuing "If anything I think Grynn was impressed by Dalgina, not many puppies would hold eye contact with her." In truth Neela had no idea if this was true. Aside from Leon, who had been terrified of the bird, Grynn had never had any contact with a puppy before now, but flattery seemed a safe option, especially when about a puppy to her mother.

Nervously Neela waited, her raised leg tense and ready to run just in case Jace had taken Grynn's actions worse than it had first seemed. She was somewhat comforted by the fact that if it came down to that, Grynn would be able to clear the half a mile distance from where she was currently hovering in an instant, and razor sharp claws at several hundred miles an hour going towards your eyes made it difficult to continue a chase.

She remained extremely leery of the bird as the woman reversed her stepping several paces, putting a small amount of distance between the two females. The tips of her ivory fangs were still exposed as a warning of what would happen should her patience be tested. The low speech of the avian language interested her but she didn't show it and remained singularly focused upon the thing she considered a threat. Her mismatched gaze followed the bird of prey as it took off from Neela's shoulder and circled overhead before flying off into the distance. Only once the bird had gone from sight did Jace allow herself to relax at all and even then only fractionally, she was too tightly wound now and her eyes flicked this way and that looking for any other predators that might take a chance at her child before settling back onto Neela. The ends of her teeth were re-covered and her harsh breathing began to slow, adrenalin slowly leaking from her pores and body.

The submission of the lower ranked woman to her while going some way towards easing her anxiety did not change her feelings towards the bird she had sent away. Should it have chosen to come back at that moment it would have received the same reception, fangs and snarls. Her words however, had her eyes narrowing slightly as though trying to stare out a lie, before resuming their usual width. The girl in her arms squirmed and squalled, demanding that she be put down. This dragged her attention from Neela to Dalgina who she quietened with a firm glance. As her gaze returned to the collie woman it was softened, the harsh lines no longer quite so deep set into her muzzle. She had no wish to make an enemy of Neela, nor drive her away as a potential friend. She hesitated a second before gesturing with a paw that she should return to her former height,

"You know this?" she said, referring to Neela's statement that Grynn wouldn't hurt her child. She found it doubtful that such a predatory bird would ignore its instincts of going for easy prey.

Neela rose gratefully to her feet at Jace's gesture, taking several nervous steps backwards as she did so. Despite the gesture Neela's body language remained tight, her ears low, her gaze rarely rising above Jace's chest and the air of openness she had been putting off earlier was entirely absent. The thought of making a powerful enemy this early into her stay with the clan was disturbing to Neela and so the collie had retreated into herself, falling back into the meek persona that had served her so well in her earlier years.

Still a bit of fire stirred within her at the way Jace spoke of Grynn, as though her companion was some beast and not the intelligent bird that she was. The assumption made Neela angry, but not enough to risk displaying that anger, though when she spoke her voice was devoid, both through anger and wariness, of the earlier warmth and friendliness she had freely displayed to this stranger, replaced with supplication and caution. "Grynn has been raised with wolves ever since she was old enough to fly, she would no more hurt a wolf pup than she would a falcon chick. Hell, she practically adopted my son when he was born, started bringing him food and wouldn’t let anybody but me enter the room." Another half truth. Grynn had in-fact done this, but between Leon's fear of her and the unsuitability of the food she was brining him the arrangement was short lived, though Grynn always remained protective of the boy, despite his reluctance to accept it.

With a low, quiet sight Neela tried to raise her head, getting as far as Jace's neck before her instincts forced her to stop, "I… I, look I apologise for any distress Grynn caused you. Once again you have my word, she is no threat to your daughter." Unable to think of anything else to say Neela began to back off, slowly taking steps backwards. From in the distance behind her a screech echoed quietly throughout the air, her mind absently categorising it as a hunting call. Evidently Grynn had decided to take Neela's advice of going hunting literally while she was away from the conversation.

Neela was so distracted with the canine in-front of her that she never noticed that the screech she had heard wasn't that of a Peregrine Falcon.

The collie woman put even more distance between them and Jace feared that whatever bonds may had formed between them had been severed completely. A pained echo crossed her face although Neela's eyes were not high enough to see it. Her free arm twitched and the hybrid brought it up to rest underneath the elbow of the arm holding Dalgina close. Floppy ears pinned back as she watched the woman struggle and ultimately fail to raise her eyes upwards.

Neela explained some more and Jace began to doubt her earlier assumption as to the intelligence on the bird and its abilities to control its own instincts. She was more than willing to admit that maybe she had been wrong although her overreaction was just considering the knowledge she had lacked towards the bird's temperament and life style before Ichika. She was about to open her mouth to assume the woman that it was alright when a loud screech made her jump. Blue and amber immediately scoured the skies for the threat, anger bubbling upwards that Neela had lied to her, she had said that the falcon would leave and yet it had returned.

Her anger was short lived however as a figure exited the trees and into full view, the avian creature that swooped towards them quickly was neither falcon shaped or colored as the peregrine had been. Neela didn't seen to notice that the bird calling into the sky was not her own but another, one that had no one to vouch for its harmlessness. Her hand now flashed downwards quickly to the knife sheathed at her thighs the same time as her voice gave rise to speech, alarm coursing through the words,

"That's not Grynn. That is something else, something bigger." The elegant ceremonial dagger was pried loose, the bleached white bone handle gleaming in the weak sunlight. Teeth were yet again bared, this time at the threat from above that was rapidly gaining speed and closing in on the two dog hybrids.

Forgetting herself Neela jerked upwards in alarm as Jace growled, one hand slipping backwards to rest on the handle of one of her knives. Neela noticed Jace looking skywards and followed her gaze to the rapidly approaching figure in the sky. "That's not Grynn" Neela muttered at the same time as Jace, instantly recognising the profile as far too big for her companion, "A hawk I think." Neela expanded, a shot of worry through her. While Neela was well aware that birds could have just as varied personalities as canines many of the hawks she had seen had been rather aggressive birds; it hadn’t been uncommon when she was living down by Mexico for Grynn to turn up with scratches and bruises from scuffles with the larger birds.

One hand darted to one of the pouches on Neela's belt while the other was raised to her lips, aiding in the piercing shriek that she sent through the air towards the hawk. It was a sound of warning. Telling the hawk to turn back. Neela's call was answered with a cry of aggression and the hawk sped up, evidently having decided that the puppy was worth angering two grown canine's for, either that or it intended to try and hunt either Jace or Neela!

Arrogance. That was another common personality factor Neela remembered among hawks but even though the hawk stood little chance against two grown canine it would only take one lucky shot for the bird to seriously injure Dalgina. Neela's hand came out of the pocket clutching several throwing knives and one was quickly tossed over into Neela's free hand. Neela hand quickly whipped around, bringing the knife up and over her shoulder before launching it towards the hawk.

The bird easily saw the missile coming and dodged but the knife had server its purpose and the hawk was now on a path where Neela could easier hit it. Neela was just preparing to throw the second knife as the hawk cam in again when she suddenly relaxed, a cocky grin spreading onto her face. Neela had seen what the hawk couldn’t, a barely visible black dot hovering far above it.

There was no warning, no hunting call or shriek, just quiet and deadly efficiency. One moment the hawk was swooping down towards Dalgina, the next a angry falcon had smashed into its neck at over 200 miles an hour, faster than even Neela's practised eyes could make out. The hawk let out a strangled cry as it was sent catapulting through the air, hitting the ground with a sickening thud and bouncing a full two metres before coming to a stop.

Neela started forward to see if it was still alive but stopped short. The hawk was clearly dead, deep gouges cut into its neck and the neck itself wrenched to one side and broken by the force of the landing. Grynn stood calmly atop the larger birds neck, cleaning the blood off of her claws onto its feathers as she gazed over at the canines with a look of satisfaction.

The events that unfolded before her happened so fast there was very little time to react to anything. Still Jace pulled the small girl closer to her. Using herself as a shield, her grown body could easily stand a lot of damage and it as long as major arteries and nerves were not severed she could recover from the injuries, it would be largely difficult for something of the hawk's size to kill her. But Dalgina was different, she cold very easily be carried away or fatally wounded with a single strike. Like Neela Jace's free hand went for her knife and was pulled free but it was not thrown, Jace did not trust her aim to hit such a small thing moving so fast.

Neela's shriek in a language Jace didn't know was high pitched and made her jump slightly with its loudness. The sound ringing in her ears heavily. The bird of prey called out in return to Neela's call and the grin set of her face told Jace it wasn't good news. As her words did, so also her knives failed to sway the hawk's path and it was closing in quickly upon them. Neela suddenly relaxed and Jace looked at her with astonishment before moving her gaze to the sky and also seeing what she had done. The falcon was poised ready to strike and did so with unnerving speed and accuracy plunging down through the sky to tear at the offending bird's body and sending it too crashing to the ground.

There was a snap as it hit the floor not far from them as Jace knew even without investigating furthur that it was dead, its head bend at a peculiar angle. The adrenalin fast faded from her body leaving her panting harshly despite her having undertaken no cause for it. She was speechless in the face of what had happened.
