For the wonderful Meghann! Can this be set for tomorrow? I uh, already made an AW today because I was procrastinating stuff XD… and now im doing it again >D

He had waited long enough. Ezra had stewed in his anger and pain and let him get in the way of his pack duties. Eli was being taken care of well enough, but he had forgotten that they weren’t the only wolves in the world. Ezra was determined to do better now, though, and the first wolf he wanted to speak with was the King.

Ezra had taken Eli to the hotel previously and ran into Amaranth there which had been pleasant enough. Eli had followed behind his father dutifully as they made their way from the shore inland. Ezra kept a steady march, determination keeping his pace quick. Eli fell behind often, easily distracted by a squirrel or a rock that could be climbed. Ezra let him, because. .well, why not? There was no assigned time he wanted to talk to the King, he wasn’t even sure if Vigilante would be around. He prayed he would be though; he was coming to him with yet another round of desperation. It seemed that lately the two only spoke when Ezra had matters of the heart to discuss with him. Another wave of guilt hit him; he did absolutely nothing for the war effort. He hadn’t even been aware it was going on until the pack had been called together so many nights ago. That was one of the last times he had seen Ever’s beautiful face.

The hotel came into view through the trees soon enough. Eli galloped ahead when he saw the familiar sight, yipping in glee. The three-month-old ran into the building with happiness all over his face. Ezra wasn’t quite sure where the King would be, but he figured his son’s noise would attract some sort of attention anyway. The secui walked into the building slowly, head down, his curled tail low.

I'm sooooo sorry! I didn't even realize you'd started this thread! D:

The King was brooding.

When he brooded like this, he preferred not to do it at his home, for fear that his mate or children would notice that something was off and call attention to it. The trespasser had certainly gotten to him more than he would have expected, particularly because he had a vague inkling of an idea about why the scent was so unpleasantly familiar. If he was correct as he thought he was in this case—and he was almost certain that he was—he did not know what to do except groan in disgust. Svara had been a blight upon the pack; they did not need one of her relatives hanging around.

Thankfully, the hotel was large and offered many places for the caramel-colored dog to brood in peace. At the very least, he could sit in front of the fireplace and stare at the dancing flames, warming his massive body while his thoughts moved to other things, most notably his family. These thoughts were quickly interrupted by the antics of an excited pup, and the King turned his head slowly, his somber mood making his movements languid. He studied the pup with markings familiar to him. "Hello there," he said softly, his rough tone brought down by the quiet voice he used.

The hulking secui was grateful to see his leader at the fireplace just inside the hotel. Ezra managed to scoop his son up with his paw before he made too much trouble around the King. Ezra offered Vigilante a smile, and gave him a quick Hello, my King, before settling down next to the man by the fireplace. The two large canines dwarfed the small boy and so the little one looked even smaller than before. Ezra looked at the russet leader with care and confusion. The man looked troubled, as always. It must be so stressful running a pack, especially one as large as this. Ezra really had no idea what it must be like.

You look… worried, the packmate said quietly, instantly regretting coming here. Vigilante had more than enough on his plate. He didn’t need to hear crap from one of his low-ranked members… but Ever always held Vigilante in the highest regard, enough to call him a father of sorts. For her memory, maybe he should tell the king what had happened after all. The husky hybrid sat with his son between his front paws, curled tail tightly wrapped around his large frame.

"Merely lost in thought," the caramel King said with a rueful smile, as it was something he could not help from happening. There was hardly a time when there was not something on his mind. "There was a young girl recently on our lands, and she reminded me of someone," he explained. Vigilante knew it was no longer important to think about. The impudent girl had left without too much of an argument, or at least, not in front of him, at any rate, though she had scrapped with Terra. He had not been there to see it, so perhaps it had been instigated by both parties. Again, it was not something that mattered anymore.

Wise jade eyes studied the small boy who looked every bit the same as his father, but very little of his mother was visible in his features. The King had not seen much of Ever in recent times, and perhaps he had not seen her regularly since before his own sons had been born the previous December. It seemed that the adopted children did not linger around home as long as the blood children did, and even Noah had left very early. The circumstances had been very different, though. "How are you, Ezra?" he asked, studying the father closely now.

Ezra watched the king closely, inspecting every muscle twitch, every flash of thought that passed behind the nobleman’s eyes. The King spoke of things Ezra had no connection with, and Vigilante’s ambiguousness about it was confusing but he didn’t give it another thought. Ezra sighed in response to his superior’s question, eyes suddenly downcast on his rambunctious son again. The hybrid kept his son close, batting the young pup with a careful paw. The young one was amused with just that, which pleased him.

I could be better, sir, he said truthfully, as Eli and him looked at each other momentarily. Ezra stared at the innocence swimming in his son’s golden eyes. He words stung like knives in his throat. Ever… left, right after meeting at the hotel about the war. Out of respect for your closeness with her, I thought I’d let you know. His mind felt heavy, woozy even. Looking at the chocolate-tipped king with desperation in his eyes, Ezra caught the stubborn ball in his throat, expelling it with it a rough cough. And I think Eli and I may be leaving sometime soon too. It hurt too much to stay in the house, the gaping hole in his chest ached whenever he looked at her side of the bed.

The way that Ezra looked concerned the dog King, but her knew he could not press for information, but merely had to wait until the male was ready to tell him what he had come to say, for Vigilante had realized now that the black and white male had wanted to find him. There was something he needed to say, something that was clearly bothering him. Many things had been wrong in the pack lately, and so he waited, wondering what it was that was troubling the Rosen patriarch in the Miracles pack. He was always able to appreciate when his members came to him with their concerns or troubles, and the King did everything that he could to be available to them, though he was not a normally social creature. Being raised alone and away from his large birth pack had done that to him, and even after years of being here, it still felt strange to act in the position of a King, where he was required to be available and social.

When the Rosen male began to speak, concern crossed the King’s features. He had been right to assume something was wrong, though he had not entirely expected the words that came next. Ever had drifted away from her adoptive parents when she had moved out of their house, though perhaps it had started when Noah and Liam had been born. Vigilante had not questioned it much, for he knew that it was difficult for her at times to not have her own parents, and the brother who had arrived at one point had left so shortly after that the King could not help but wonder if she felt as if she had been given a raw deal. He supposed he would have understood the thought process, but he wished that she would have come to talk to him, and it pained him to know that she had left Ezra and their young son alone in such troubled times.

It was greatly appreciated that Ezra thought to come and tell him about Ever’s leaving, but that was not all that the man spoke of now. What came next was clearly difficult for him to vocalize; that much was obvious to the King. And when Ezra spoke, Vigilante understood. “Thank you for coming to tell me, both about Ever and yourself. It is a cold world out there, though I am sure that you already know this.” Wise eyes of jade looked down to the boy, his would-be grandson. “Keep him and yourself safe. Know that you will always have a home here if you should need it,” he said, his tone gentle and understanding. He understood that it was difficult to stay in a place that held memories like that, and it had been that reason alone that had brought him here when his sister passed instead of staying where he was.
