Before the scars...(Time warp contest)

Absolutely no need to make a reply that's this long! Not expecting that, I just got carried away...

His tiny nose scented the air as the scent of pine swept in from the evergreen forest of the Dampwoods. The little golden pup blinked in a startled fashion at the surge of smell, his amber eyes wide in surprise of what he'd received when he'd been trying to scent for moose. Not that he could hunt the moose...there weren't many around anyway, but even if there were, he knew his dad wouldn't let him go after them. He was the biggest kid in the litter, he should be able to go! Not until I'm older, he pouted, making a face out at the trees that had offended his nose, as if they were somehow to blame for his father's strict and distant nature.

When he was older, he was going to do so many things...hunt the biggest animals, run across the whole territory, and even get in a real fight to protect the pack! He was good at fighting...or at least better at it than Skirnir, who his father had given lessons alongside him. Skoll thought that his brother could be better at it if he tried harder, but that he was only a scared pup, who was afraid to give him a real fight. While he was outwardly disdainful of his brother's weak performance in their practices with their father, on the inside he was happy about it, winning all the time hadn't ceased to be fun, and it let the two of them know who was the boss, even though they were the same age.

SnowOwl didn't participate in those games...she spent a lot of time with their mother. Skoll didn't understand his sister very well...only that she wasn't held to quite the same expectations he was. Freyr, his father, admonished him for being big and strong, for hunting and fighting. SkyDance, his mother, was happy with SnowOwl for different reasons. She practiced hunting with little things, but she never fought...and where people talked about how big and strong Skoll and his brother were growing up to be, they only ever talked about how pretty and graceful SnowOwl was. The discrepancy confused him, but he would feel weird talking to his parents about it, so he never did more than wonder to himself quietly.

Looking back up the mountain, the pup's brows furrowed. He was going up that hill, and he was going to see if there were any moose prints up there. He couldn't smell anything, but if they had been there recently, he could track them down, just like Gray or his dad would do. He studied the mountain...it would be a long way up, but he knew that if he was daunted so early, he could never make it to the top. Quietly, stubbornly, he sat and gathered up his courage.
