For Neela and Leon!

Sophie climbed out of the den after an afternoon nap with a wide yawn and a sleepy blink of her eyes. She'd left Bug back inside, keeping Boothe company--oddly enough, the doll was growing on her big brother--along with her siblings. She padded out to the little clearing next to their den, and plopped her tiny butt down under a tree, staring up at the cold gray sky. It looked much earlier than it was; for a moment she thought it was still morning, but no. There was the sun, far too high in the sky for it to be too early yet. Sophie frowned up at the clouds for lying to her, then huffed and got up again, prancing out into the center of the clearing.

She played quietly by herself for long moments, and then blinked up at the sky as it began to get colder, shivering bodily. Large, fluffy white things were falling from the sky, and she stared at them in surprise as one floated down and landed on her nose. She yelped a bit as it landed; that was cold! Whimpering, she began running around in circles, trying to avoid the steadily falling snow but failing more and more each time. Sophie was not deterred, though; she kept trying, and didn't even think of going back into the warm, cozy den, even after her teeth began chattering, because she wanted to play outside.

It was just the stupid sky falling, after all.

Neela is Lupus-ified =D.

Word Count → 347

Neela padded slowly along, gazing around happily at the falling snow and occasionally giving a not entirely unhappy snort as a flake landed on her nose. The collie adored snow and was just barely holding herself back from prancing around in it like a little pup.

Neela had abandoned her equipment at the sign of snow, wrapping her guitar and other belongings in a waterproff sheet she carried for such occaions and burying the package; she didn’t want to damage her guitar by getting it wet but neither did she wanted to cower in some cave while it was snowing! With her equipment stowed the only sign that Neela was not a regular wolf was her belt which had been stripped to the essentials, knives, locket and some food, and hung in a way that Neela found left it dangling somewhat loosely in Lupus and too tight in Optime, but wearable in both.

As Neela padded along she was aware of snow accumulating on her back and head; while her long fur insulated her from the snows cold it also insulated the snow from her heat, causing the collie to quickly gather a white dusting in weather such as this. Still it didn't particularly bother Neela and she kept moving forward without fuss, enjoying the sight of the scenery around her as it slowly gathered a thin layer of snow, glittering in the sunlight that was just peeking through the clouds.

Pushing her way gently through a large bush Neela came to a clearing, occupied by a brown furred puppy. Curious, Neela paused just short of leaving the bush, her eyes scanning around the clearing warily, though her stealthy approach was ruined when the puppy let out a yelp and started running in circles as Neela couldn't resist letting out an amused snort followed by a giggle at the pups behaviour.

Figuring that the pup, and anybody else who was hanging around, already knew where she was now Neela padded slowly out of the bush, her soft voice calling out into the clearing, "Hello there little one."

Sophie whined unhappily as she began getting wet, her fur just thick enough to keep the flakes from melting on her but not thick enough to keep her from the cold. She continued to run around in circles, stopping to yap occasionally at the falling sky-water, and finally sat and pouted, narrowing her eyes in her best imitation of Daire's fiercest glare. "You stop now!" She shouted, scrunching her face up to glare as a flake fluttered down and landed squarely on her nose. She snorted and huffed, and then wiped her paw against her face, whining again.

Laughter came from somewhere behind her, and she turned, one ear flattening against her head while the other perked curiously at the sight of a long-furred dog. She blinked, backing up a few steps uneasily, and turned her head to the side, examining the stranger critically. There was a long moment of silence on her part, before the cold and the impoliteness of it all got to her, and she murmured a quiet, "Hi..."

Noticing the puppies apprehension Neela didn’t advance any further into the clearing and rather sat down where she stood, her tail wagging slowly along the ground. While she was interested in what a pupyp was doing out here by itself she had no intention of pushing the matter and scaring the child, so instead she took the opportunity to examine the puppy.

Taking a sniff of the air Neela noticed that the puppy held no pack scent, which was slightly worrying considering that the puppy seemed to be on its own out here, though Neela could smell several stale scents around the clearing. Deciding to investigate the puppy a bit more, but not wanting to spook her, Neela stretched out and crouched down low, bring her down to the puppies level though she didn’t move from her spot at the edge of the clearing.

"My name's Neela, what's yours?"

Word Count → 193 :: Really sorry about the wait, and the shortness! ^^; The holidays were crazy. xD;

The strange dog sat where she was shortly after Sophie's hesitant greeting, and the girl moved carefully closer to the den, in case she was in danger. It didn't occur to her that running into the den was sort of a bad idea, as she would then be cornered; after all, brother Leon was in the den, and so were Trigger and Boothe, and it had already been established in her small puppy mind--thanks to Skoll and her own rather warped conclusions--that Leon was a King, and he could chase off any threat.

The woman spoke, introducing herself as Neela, and Sophie's ears perked and then flattened again. She waited a moment to consider her answer before saying, carefully, " 'M Sophie." She didn't really know what else to say, as she had the vague notion she wasn't supposed to talk to strangers--not something that Daire or Leon had taught her, just yet, but rather a feeling in her gut that told her it was a bad idea. But, she decided, as long as she stayed in the clearing, near the den, and Brother Leon was nearby, it couldn't hurt anything.

The puppy seemed hesitant to talk to her, which Neela actually took to be reassuring as it seemed to hint of the puppy having been warned away from strangers by somebody. Despite this the lack of any fresh scents in the clearing had Neela worried; Neela had forgotten about the detrimental effect that the snow, falling thicker and faster with every passing moment, would have on her senses, which was why she hadn’t noticed the scents of those dwelling within the den.

"Do you live here?" Neela queried, keeping her voice soft and welcoming and tilting her head to the side as she did so. Neela had found that the way her long fur and ears flopped to one side with the orientation of her head could serve to put people at ease on occasion. Giving the puppy a few seconds to respond Neela quickly followed up with a second question, "Are your parents nearby?"

Word Count → 234 :: No worries! D'you think this is a good place to have Crys/Leon come in...?

The dog tilted her head to the side, but over-all seemed merely concerned about her, so Sophie didn't dash back into the den just yet. She hovered, though, shivering slightly in the cold as the snow melted into her fur and the wind nipped at her nose, and when the question came, was quick to reply, "Yes!", leaving off the much more impolite, "So you can go 'way now." At the second inquiry, she actually recoiled in horror, her head whipping about on her neck as she looked for any sign of her parents.

"No! Hope not!" She said worriedly, and shuffled even closer to the den, suddenly a very small ball of frightened child. She didn't want Daire to suddenly be summoned just because someone asked about him; that had happened a lot on the road up here, people would come and shout his name and when Sophie and Boothe investigated, he was right there, shouting at them to get back to their beds and to keep their mouths shut.

Shuddering unhappily, Sophie declared, quite loudly, "There no parents here. Dunno whatchu talking 'bout, they not coming!" And then squeezed her eyes shut and curled forward, her tail between her legs and her paws over her ears. If Daire appeared, it wouldn't fall on her head; it would be all that other girl's fault..

She'd done everything she could to prevent it.

Neela was taken aback by the puppy's violent reaction to the suggestion of her parents' presence and her head shot straight upwards, memories of her own mother racing through her head.

Neela gazed intently at Sophie, now seeing the puppy in a different light. Could this puppy have had a similar upbringing to Neela, but have had more courage than herself and fled it? Concerned she started to walk forwards, very slowly and keeping low to the ground so as to not startle the pup and called out, her voice as reassuring as she could make it, though there was a quiver of sadness mixed within it at the memories that had been brought forth of her own childhood, "Are you alright?" The question was inadequate and Neela knew it but she couldn’t think of anything specific to ask the distressed child.

Word Count → 223 :: Crys gave me the A-okay to PP Leon here so we could close this off derp.

There was no sudden shouting, but she heard footsteps, and then a heavy hand came to rest on her head. She peered up with frightened eyes, but it was only Leon, and she cuddled into him with a frightened whimper, clawing at his sides until she was pulled up into his arms. He was a whole lot warmer than she was, and she cuddled close to him, curling in on herself and darting her gaze now and then fearfully around the clearing. She wasn't afraid of the woman who'd come asking questions, though; she was afraid of, or at least the memory of, her father, and her brother knew that.

He was a little gruffer than he should have been, Sophie thought later, after the confrontation was over and the stranger had gone home with the understanding that the little runt she'd checked on had been well-taken care of, after all. She sat in the den and looked over her injured brother, her eyes bright and watery with worry, while Trigger did his best to care for the eldest. He was a lot meaner than he had to be, sometimes, and Sophie wondered why that was; but, she figured, as long as he was always nice to her, and the family, he could be mean to whoever else he wanted to be.
