How Many Legs?

Terra hit Augustus's back, sending them both reeling through the snow. Everything was tumbling, Terra trying not to tip off as they crashed into a fluffy bank. Somehow she'd managed to stick on. Terra laughed again, a bright clear sound ringing through the air. It was unexpected, and happy, and wonderful to play with someone else. Terra tried to stay on as Augustus righted himself, shaking around. It was no use though, and Terra crashed to the ground.

Her legs hit against air as she laid on her back before rolling over, covered in snow. Tail wagging cheerfully she looked up at Augustus. She reached up, attempting to nip at his ear. Standing back up she bounded a short distance away, bowing down again. This was too much fun. Terra wanted to just keep going, rolling and wrestling through the snow.

All was a flurry of snow and fur, the colors around them black and white and brown and auburn. He spluttered when they hit the snow bank. He righted himself and sent her tumbling soon afterwards, affording him a triumphant Hah! not quite a laugh, but not without mirth. He puffed up and trotted a circle around her, head high, tail a bushy banner of victory waving behind his broad back in a pendulum like rhythm. He saw her reach up for his ears and he pounced back suddenly, eyeing her carefully. This time when she bowed the black and white male was prepared. He raced towards her, bowing down himself before throwing his head up and darting off to the side.

After all that had happened to him, his brother’s death, his banishment from his pack, Augustus was still a young wolf. It was a bit unfortunate that Terra had to be the one to make him realize it. It mattered little now, though, as his tongue began to loll from his mouth, and his tail swayed slowly back and forth as it rarely did. The chill in the air brought life to his limbs and invigorated him as he pounced back and forth towards the small coy wolf, not yet trying to attack. He hoped to confuse her eyes with the dancing of his white pelt against the snow beneath, and his rapid random movements to and fro. He was laughing now, actually laughing, his jovial notes blending in a rising and falling melody with the coyotes yipping voice. He finally leapt towards her, feigning an attack on an ear before actually aiming the real attack at her elbow.

OOC you make her sound like a pest! lol

Augustus bowed back, and Terra whirled to keep him in sight. She darted back and forth, playfully snapping at the air between them. It was harder keeping her eyes on him, his white coat blinding against the white snow. The only way to track him was watching his bright shining eyes. Tail wagging she watched carefully for his attack. This wasn't the same as a real contest, but Terra's competitive spirit still burned bright, She wouldn't lose to him. At least if it wasn't on purpose.

Their voices blended together as they danced across the snow, darting back and forth. A wide grin painted Terra's face as he laughed. It was hard to picture him as the same wolf she'd rescued from near death, he was so bright. He pounced in, and Terra twisted to avoid him pinning her ear. Instead he locked around her elbow, releasing a yelp of surprise from her. Not willing to give up Terra twisted again, playfully nipping at his back, trying to get a grip.

He grinned, certain that his tricks were working on the female as he moved back and forth back and forth. He nipped readily at her elbow, leaping backwards at the sound of her yelp. He grinned triumphantly, tail beating the air slowly behind his broad back. A muffled woof of surprise broke from his lips when he felt her teeth upon his back, gripping his dense pelt. He writhed and twisted, paws stepping between her own to try and trip her so he could regain the upper paw. If it were a battle of wills the stubborn man was sure to win, after all, was it not he who clung to his dark past so desperately even after having left his homeland? When he had little else to fear? And was it not he who saw fit to argue with the only few friends he had over the use of commonplace items? Namely a knife? Yes, he was an unyielding sort.

He turned his head, trying to reach her, connect with something -anything, but she was at such a position that it made getting a grip on the slippery little coyote near impossible. That still did not stop his gaping jaws from snapping open and closed with a soft clipping noise. It was little use and he soon found himself diving into the snow, hoping that at least would shake her. His tongue spilled out, tasting the cold flakes as they melted against the heat.

The fur was thick in her mouth, hard to bite. Terra's grip was precarious at best, but the twisting that commenced was rather amusing. Terra kept her feet on the ground this time, always dancing just out of reach, though her fancier tricks couldn't be done, like slipping underneath him and coming up on top. He twisted before diving into the snow. Terra released him there, snapping at the snow itself and taking in a fair bit just to chew on. As quickly as she took a mouthful it melted, a hopeless endeavor.

Tail wagging happily Terra jumped to the other side of the bank, ready for Augustus to come out that side. She whined softly, sticking her nose in to see if he was close. Body crouched she was prepared to leap over him when he came out, commencing a game of chase. Or he could come out elsewhere, leaving Terra looking silly and staring at nothing. Either way it promised fun.

OOC Crummy post- maybe she show him around the hotel a bit and we could get on to wrapping this up? / +225

He could feel her grip loosening on his fur. His attempts to trip her were failing miserably, however, and he gave in. When he hit the snow bank he was too large for it to cover him entirely and his back peeked out from the broken blanket of white. The black saddle was evident on his back, a tell tale sign of where he lay. He poked his muzzle out, sputtering. He found her snapping at the snow and he gazed at her oddly. He shook the snow from himself, and found her searching for him in the bank. Silently he stalked behind her with predatory grace.

Looking for me? He asked, finding it rather odd that she’d lost him in the first place. He waited for her to look behind and ran off gradually reaching a full sprint. He didn’t bother looking back, and just let his paws take him where they wished. His tongue soon lolled from his muzzle and he chanced a look back to see if she was following, slowing pace as well. His legs were longer and he didn’t want to lose the hybrid. He looked again to see where he was going and found the hotel gate before him. There, he screeched to a halt, sending snow flying everywhere. He gazed up at the human ruin in awe-inspired silence.

OOC that's just fine. is odd threading here when he's not there

Terra jumped as a voice sounded behind her, sending her into the snow bank. Shaking herself she turned around to find Augustus standing there, a silly grin on his face. She growled playfully as he took off, working her way back through the snow. Terra pounced after him. Normally her lighter form, built for speed, gave her a fair advantage. The snow worked against her though, and she struggled to keep up, though she barked and yapped the entire way through the snow. Her tail wagged happily behind her, enjoying the game. It was nice to see a familiar face that lived on four legs too.

The hotel came into view, and Terra grinned at the familiar sight rising above them. She'd picked out her own room in there, wanting to be close to everyone else, as it seemed to be the center for the pack, the alpha and his family living just a short distance away. Augustus halted in front of her, and Terra didn't catch on until too late, crashing into his back. She backed up with a yip, shaking her head. Looking at Augustus she realized he probably hadn't seen such a thing up close in a long time. I live in there. Want to see? It was a good little room, a hole carved out of the mattress for her to curl into, nice and private. Her pair of daggers were stored there as well for when she practiced.

OOC My thoughts exactly. / +268

He ran in a moment of bliss, feeling the crunch of snow beneath his similarly colored paws. It almost felt like home. Her sharp yips and barks sounded behind him and he grinned widely, knowing that she was struggling to reach him. She was not made for snow like he, and it gave him a surge of pride. Not that he had any shortage of that. He was happy to be a wolf, and proud of his heritage. His blood was untainted and pure. He couldn’t imagine ever being anything else. When the hotel loomed before him he found himself pausing before the gate. When she came tumbling into him he uttered a surprised yelp and crashed face first into the snow. He banged his head against the gate when he tried to rise, and for a moment contemplated staying down on the ground. Instead, he rubbed his head with a paw and gave another attempt. This time he was successful, but he was almost certain that come tomorrow morning he would have one terrible headache.

His eyes were screwy when he turned to look at Terra, but they soon adjusted and his gaze trailed along to the hotel again. Uhh… he hesitated. But an overwhelming wave of curiosity drove him to accept her offer. Okay. He was not so confident now and the smile dropped from his face. He gazed at the hotel as if it were some domineering fortress, and his paws would not move forward. That was all remedied when he looked at Terra and he toughened up, ready to follow where she would lead.

Terra grinned happily at Augustus. He wasn't so confident now that they stood before the building about to enter it. So young, and already so inflexible. She softened her words with a swap of her tail before darting up to the door. She radiated confidence here, already having accepted it as the heart of the pack. Terra had grown up traveling around the lands, living outside, but if her pack lived inside a building she would willingly follow after them. She was a pack creature through and through after all. Reaching the door she nudged it open with her nose.

Pausing at the stairs Terra looked to see if Augustus was alright. Don't worry, I wouldn't be in here if the building was dangerous. Already seen the results of that. Alright so she hadn't, but another pup from her birth pack had, the building collapsing and killing the tiny creature. Not realizing her comment might have the opposite effect Terra bounded up the steps. Happily she walked until she reached her room. Pushing it open she ran over to her mattress. Leaping into the hole she'd carved out of it Terra curled around, cozy and content.

He puffed up and narrowed his gaze on her. Inflexible? What’s that supposed to mean? And I’m no pup. Arguing with the man was near as impossible as digging a hole from North America to China, it was no wonder she’d rarely bothered to engage him. Caspa would have indulged him, he was sure. He snorted, thinking of the last time they’d met. She was near as unreasonable as he, though much more intellectual. He had no choice but to give up. It all mattered little now as he followed the coy wolf into the giant hume den. But he couldn’t help but wonder if Caspa was somewhere within these walls as well. His eyes strayed to the doorways they passed, some had fallen into disrepair and hung sullenly from the hinges, but there were other doors, and some were intact. His nose twitched, but he found nothing but a faint trace of her here and there, nothing that would lead him to her room.

When the stairs were set before him the large wolf paused, gazing at the stairs with immeasurable uncertainty. Terra turned and spoke to him reassuringly, and he watched her bound up the steps. It was his turn, now and he inched reluctantly forward. She’d bounded up so confidently and nothing bad had happened…yet. He reached out with a paw. It lingered in the air a moment before hesitantly coming to rest on the first step. Slowly and steadily he added pound by pound of his weight. It did not yield and he climbed the first step, still hesitant, but more confident than before. Another step passed beneath him, and another. When he was halfway he looked back to see his progress.

A sudden wave of panic had him in its grasp as he noticed that he was no longer level with the ground. He was above it, but had no choice but to ascend. He turned and ran the rest of the way with ears and tail low. He gave a sigh of relief once he reached Terra, quickly adjusting himself to appear cool and collected, as if nothing had happened. His heart rate began to recede and he glanced at his surroundings. It was a simple room, in tact for most part. The girl had few effects to furnish it with. He watched her leap up into the modified square structure of the mattress, realizing he’d seen its like before. He didn’t blame her for claiming one of her own and lingered at the side of the bed, gazing at her curiously.

Terra smirked at the fear in Augustus' face. It was only a set of stairs, yet he was so fearful. Well, to an extent that was right. Canines naturally feared the unknown, only naive pups lacking that fear. Being fearful where other canines trod though, was a different matter. She could see one being fearful being in a building for the first time on their own, but if there were other canines that traversed them with no problem the fear became simply ridiculous. Many canines had traveled those stairs, and Terra herself had gone before Augustus. All it did was hammer in the point of Augustus lacking the adaptive streak that was so important for survival. If one couldn't adapt to their surroundings, it meant death most of the time.

Content and warm in her place in the mattress Terra looked down at Augustus as he studied it. I know I don't really need it, but it's really soft. See? Taking a paw she pressed down on the mattress. Willingly it sank down a little under her weight before coming back up. Her little hole didn't hold the same attributes, as she'd torn through the first lair to make it. Metal springs had been pulled out, leaving just the foam for the lining. Terra hadn't been quite sure what to do with the mattress until she discovered she could dig into it. Otherwise it would have just been ignored instead of making the lovely nest that it did. Hopping back out she indicated. Try it out.

OOC And it's a wrap / +438

The man had grown up in the wilds of the Yukon. His pack had made their home far from any former human settlements, and those that were near by were nothing more than one floored cabins long fallen into disrepair. He’d never seen a building this tall before, and never had seen such a thing as stairs. It wasn’t only that. It made him feel uneasy to be above the ground, even despite all the walls around him. He was feeling largely claustrophobic being indoors, with no hint of sky above, and only the feel of hard wood and concrete beneath his paws. He didn’t like this feeling, and would breath a great sigh of relief once he felt the snow beneath him once again. For now he tread carefully, pausing whenever he heard the floor creak beneath him. It was easier for Terra. She didn’t weigh near as much as he and tread upon the planks unnoticed for the most part, the floor hardly making a sound, but for the clacking of her claws on its surface. This was fast becoming a very eventful day indeed.

His ears twitched as she spoke of the mattress, and he had to agree that were he a more civilized creature, he’d make a bed of something like this as well. He’d tried one out once as he explored a cabin in the Cour des Miracles territories, but that had been cut short by the arrival of Caspa. He watched Terra as she put a little weight on the unharmed portion of the mattress. When she hopped down encouraging him to try the thing out he hesitated, eying the hole in its center. Would he even fit? He placed a paw inside, the rest of him following as he tried to curl up enough to fit in its center. It proved impossible so he adjusted, placing his forepaws outside the hole. He grinned a little, finally triumphant, although the area around his rump still felt a little snug. He lay there a couple minutes before pulling himself out bit by bit. He didn’t leave it entirely, but lay wrapped around the other portions. He offered an awkward twitch of his head to Terra, inviting her to join him. He was finding that he felt rather tired, no doubt the earlier excitement was taking its toll. His jaws parted into a wide yawn, making a dull clipping sound as they came back together. Fighting to stay awake became a losing battle and soon the man’s eyes were closing. A few moments later they were shut tight, and he was lost to sleep.

Terra's tail wagged as Augustus stepped up to the mattress. Despite his hesitancy he stepped up slowly. Inside the hole she'd created Augustus looked gigantic. Terra realized that she was smaller than him, and that he couldn't fit. Embarrassed by her mistake she watched as he shifted around, sticking his paws out before he finally fit. Her tail thumped happily as he moved to the side, leaving room for her to come up as well.

Never one to pass up the chance to spend time with a pack mate Terra happily clambered up. Her tail thumped against the mattress as she tucked into the tiny hole she'd scooped out. Settled in Terra looked up, licking Augustus' cheek. Even if he did end up leaving, he was here for now, and was her friend. Confident that he wouldn't turn from her Terra settled down. Closing her eyes she drifted off to sleep.
