Ghost of the Past

The cat had found himself at the borders of the coyote pack, Inferni. He stood a ways away from it, but not too far; the skulls of innocent and guilty wolves alike lined the pack on hefty, tall pikes and sent a foreboding aura around the pack. He had been at the Inferni pack more times than any other, even Dahlia de Mai where he had met the kind wolf Conor Soul. Later he had learned that the Soul had died at none other than the hands of a Lykoi, part of the family that made the Inferni pack and part of the family that had killed his own love, Flower. He swam in these memories as his emerald eyes rested on the pikes of the dead, the scene a hazy color of red and musty brown mixed together in a swirl of dust.

He wasn't sure why he was here again. He wasn't sure why the Inferni pack was the pack that the ebony feline whose existence few knew of continued to visit, time and time again. The cat could be compared to a ghost, a dark shadow of a ghost who walked the earth of Souls, knowing and yet not known. He was certain that the only one of his friends who was alive and still in Nova Scotia was Alder, as he had scented his smell around the pack of Cour des Miracles, still alive and well. He was one of the only ones that Element was friends with that was; Conor was dead, Keychain had disappeared, Sepirah, the canine who had saved him from Halo's glistening swords had disappeared. His own love, Flower, was dead, but he had made peace with that. But for some reason he could not make peace with this pack, this pack that continued to call him toward it.

She had been scouting the borders again, her eyes and ears eager for the sound of trouble, newcomers or even just prey. The Inferni woman had spent much time within the innerworkings of the clan these past days since she had spent so much time outside of them the weeks before. Her black banded ears were perked forward as she padded forth in her luperci form, the tiny canine followed the youthful kitten that she had adopted, or in a way he had adopted her.

The smaller feline was growing at a quick rate and the small canine wondered just how long before the tom would be able to look her in the eye in her lesser used form. She shook the idea to the back of her mind and swatted at the feline's rump, his bobbed tail twitching happily as he stalked off, frisking happily out of her reach.

The cat stopped suddenly and darted off down the path. Zana sighed and quickened her pace, the scent of another feline in the air as she came around the corner and found herself face to face with another cat, this one though was not one of the felines that she knew resided in Inferni. The tiny woman was surprised to realize that the cat was almost the same height as her and she walked slowly up to the beast as she asked. "Can I help you.." She really wondered just what the creature was doing on their border this day.

A deep breath in through his nose told him that there was someone approaching. He scoured the distance; sure enough, two figures, both quite small for the area, were heading his way. He scented through his nose and mouth again; one was a coyote, a female, and the other was a cat like him. It wasn't just a cat, however, but a young one, a kitten. He saw as they approached even nearer and looked at the odd couple.

The coyote was an oddity, but Element did not betray his curiousity; she was small, incredibly small, for a canine. She was nearly his size, although him being a cat and her being a canine still provided a noticeable difference, but the feline did notice it. It made him feel slightly more comfortable, since he had never seen a canine he could see eye to eye. The kitten was smaller than him and had a bobbed tail; he was looking at Element curiously.

He looked at the coyote female and dipped his head. "It depends on what you can help with," he said amiably. He did not have a particular reason for being on Inferni borders, but he was rather curious about this woman - and her kitten companion, he thought while looking at the smaller feline.

She had never really thought how small she was, but when she stood before the feline it really made her realize what a terrible thing she must look like. She was silent as she waited for the creature to speak, letting Sup-Sup spend out his curiosity by padding up before her and examining the other feline. She watched the young cat closely, knowing he had little respect for his elders and she almost expected some mischief to form any moment. Indeed she was surprised when instead of pouncing the older feline he sat back on his haunches and yawned, his large round eyes just watching for the moment.

Zana nodded slightly though to the feline when he dipped his head and spoke. She wondered why he had come to the borders with the words he spoken but she ignored it for the moment as she asked. "Well, what are you here for.. I can't say that most of the clan is as.." her words trailed off a moment as she tried to find the right words. "accepting.. of strangers upon the borders." She smiled slightly as she added. "I'm Zana, and obviously as you can tell.. I'm not like most.." It had been a long time coming but sooner or later the woman had to make a crack on the cards life had thrown her.

Smile

Element watched as the small cat looked at him inquisitively - he loved young creatures, loved their curiousity and the spark they gave life. Soon enough, the cat sat back on its haunches, simply content to watch Element; it reminded him of when he himself was small and would stare at things to gather information, watch them to see what they were like, what they did, what they ate, how they lived. Curiousity was indeed a virtue for cats, and he as pleased to see that this young cat continued the famous tradition. Smiling, he dipped his head to the cat, a sign of happiness to meet another cat. It wasn't often that the black feline met others of his race - the Nova Scotia lands were populated by dogs, coyotes and wolves, and when Element got a glimpse of a cat, or even met one, it was something special to him indeed.

He turned his attention to the coyote who now was before him and speaking; she asked what he was there for and he found that he could not entirely answer. Before he could say anything, however, she admitted to her size, saying that she wasn't like most others - it was true. He was almost as large as her, which was an oddity and quite strange in itself; he had seen giants of wolves that almost surpassed reality, being at least ten times the size of himself. Finding himself a stranger in a strange land of canines, however, he sympathized with her.

"You'll find that being different isn't as disadvantageous as you may first think," he said genuinely. "As for why I am here.." He thought for a moment and then spoke, the words coming to him in a flash, curiousity coming over him. "I wish to know, if you can tell me... what has become of Halo Lykoi?"

She sat quietly, amused that the two felines before her seemed to dance some strange note of etiquette that was known to cats alone. Her smaller friend finally had settled before the two and with his eyes half closed he took in their surroundings, one ear arched and listening to the whole world while to any just passing by they would assume the kitten was dozing. She chuckled at the idea and moved forward to lick the small kitten's forehead, knowing that he hated the sign of affection and how it seemed to show the world he was a child still. She smiled slightly as she turned her gaze back to the ebony feline who was dancing about their borders.

Zana was not use to actually having conversations with cats. Sup-Sup and his siblings had been an accident, as she had killed their mother for means of survival not realizing that there were young involved. She had taken the kittens under wing and they had found family across the clan's lands now. She liked the idea that Sup-Sup would still have family within the lands but as well as the protection of the clan. She wasn't certain if the whole of the clan was so overly friendly towards the smaller creatures but she wouldn't see a bit of fur harmed on them now that she'd come to know them properly.

The pygmy Lykoi couldn't help the bitter sweet smile that spread over her lips as the male feline spoke. She shook her head slightly as she admitted. "I've learned to manage.. but the world will never belong to a creature like me little one.." There was a balance in the world and while felines and the larger canines had their places she had not yet found just where she belonged in all honesty, but she hadn't quit looking.

She hadn't wished her posture to change but she couldn't help it as the feline finally fell upon telling the reason he had come to their borders. Her heckles rose slightly as she growled lightly, "Halo still resides here.." She doubted the woman would ever disappear from the lands but she could hope. There was no easy way in life with the dark souled bitch roaming the lands.

He saw the swift lick on the forehead the small canine gave the feline and he felt a warming in his heart; he remembered when his own mother would lick him on the forehead, and everywhere else; his toes, his tummy, his nose after it had been trodden on by a snail. Everywhere was special to his mother and he would be licked there as well - it was not only a sign of cleanliness that felines were known for, but it was also a sign of love and caring for another in the feline world. Their tongues were sharper and drier than dogs, and they licked themselves far more frequently - and each other. He watched her fondly; although her tongue was floppy, long, and dripping wet with saliva, rather than the cat's neat tongue, he was sure that the small feline in front of him appreciated the gesture all the same from what seemed to be his foster mother, or at least his companion.

The feline saw as the hint of sadness entered her eyes and she spoke, and he also felt sad for her; he remembered how out of place and angry he felt at the world when he entered the area of Nova Scotia. There were no cats, no things to talk to that were his size; there were only canines, the predators of the world, the speakers of High Speech and the inheritors of the Luperci virus that gave them hands and two legs to walk on. There were only dogs and wolves and coyotes, the same type of animal that had killed his only companion, Flower. He had felt bitterness... but then he found the library, found friends, and found peace within himself. He did not respond to her mention, not wishing to give her false hope nor wanting to press the issue; he looked at her with complete and utter understanding, however, a striking sight in the green eyes.

He could see that the woman also did not like Halo Lykoi any better than he did. Her hackles rose and her voice was little more than a growl when she replied; it was so canine that he barely understood it, although he did grasp what she was saying in the end. "I see.." he said, thinking for a moment. "We do not have the best of relationships, Halo and I," he said slightly bitterly. It was an understatement; he was sure that they both despised each other.

The small feline that had taken to Zana only seemed to be in a state of rest as the two older creatures spoke, but soon enough he danced back to life as a lone leaf pattered across his paws. His fluffy tail darted straight up as his small frame skittered across the ground after the leaf. She couldn't help but chuckle softly as she watched the small soul with fondness. He was too young to remember just how he came to be with her and she preferred not to ever have to bring it to light, for now that she knew that the felines were not just another beast in the lands but they were capable of conversation and thoughts of their own, it made her realize she could never hunt the creatures again. She wondered for a second what her life would be like if all the creatures of the lands began to speak but cast the idea aside for there were beasts far to tasty to give up for the process of thought.

She let her eyes fall back to the feline before her as he spoke. A frown graced her lips again as she felt her ebony lips rise over to reveal her fangs in a flash as she barked. "I don't believe anyone has the best of relationships with that woman unless she's got them twisted around her finger.." She gazed down at the small beast a moment before she felt the need to ask. "Just what came between the two of you?" It was probably something foolish and unexplainable, for most things seemed to be when it came to the warrior princess, but Zana wished to hear it from the feline, not from the tainted lips of the beast who roamed free in the clan.

The black cat smiled as the younger feline began to dance after the fallen leaf, his whiskers quivering and eyes bright with excitement. He remembered the excitement and joy that all moving objects, even leaves and other such inanimates, brought to him as a kitten. He knew better now, but as a kitten, all he saw the leaves as were dangerous prey to be pounced on and eaten.

He nodded in confirmation as she said that many who crossed Halo did not enjoy the encounter, and he was no different. If it hadn't been for the black female Lykoi who had saved him -the one with the name of Sepirah, who seemed to have disappeared from the lands of the coyote clan. Nevertheless, he was grateful for the woman who had decided to save him. He was now again aware of the scars that underlined his skin beneath his thick, silky black fur; he knew, however, that the scars he had now from Halo's double swords would have been far graver if not for Sepirah.

And then the woman before him asked what he had to do with the murderous woman. Although most of his anger and grief had faded from his mind, involuntarily his tail bristled and his eyes narrowed in anger. Element snorted before sharing the tale with her. "I had a partner when I first entered this peninsula," he said. "We were... best friends. I loved her.. I still do. But one day, she wasn't there." He closed his eyes. "The beast we speak of had murdered her," he said, spitting out the words like a venom. I attacked her when I discovered what she had done. Foolish you may say... I was blinded by anger and love. A packmate of hers saved me... Sepirah Lykoi. She doesn't reside here any longer, does she? he asked. He knew, though. He knew from when he had stopped scenting her scent on the wind, stopped hearing her name in a whisper... and yet Halo remained.
