Word Count » 377 :: OOC: About mid day or sooner if you wish? It's quite close to the borders of Cercatori Smile

It had been several days that Eclipse had stayed in the forest that shared her name. It was a beautiful place, and she had met a few wolves loners and pack members alike. She would head home that evening after she got herself a deer. She wanted to present much of the meat and bones as a present to Cercatori. Why she didn’t do it for all the other packs or none at all was beyond her, but this was a test and the Ethereal Eclipse was mostly owned by Cercatori, so if she got a deer, she would present much of it to the leader of Cercatori. She would save some for herself for the journey back.

So she set out of her camp, taking her bow and shouldering her quivers and headed out to find the perfect spot to start her hunt. She looked out for dung, broken branches and footprints. Her eyes scanning the lay of the forest. It wasn’t as hard to see as it would have been in the summer, which made Eclipse far happier. She loved the snow, and the ease it gave her to see in lands that would be far harder to see in the other seasons. Her nose twitched as she moved, taking in a quick scent. That was a deer, taking a deep breath she pulled out an arrow and knocked it. Looking down she spotted a hoof print That was a good sign! She was even down wind, though hoped she didn’t get too close to the borders of Cercatori for she knew she was close as she got a draft of it from the wind. She was moving towards the borders so she had to make sure not to cross them or kill beyond them.

The sight of the deer made Eclipse smile as she pulled the string to the back of her cheek, she aimed, breathed a few long deep breaths and then released. The arrow hit, but the deer ran. She didn’t hit it in a particularly vital part and the arrow stuck out on the part where it’s neck and shoulder met. Cursing herself Eclipse grabbed another arrow and aimed again, running in hopes to cut the deer off.

Whhht! What was that?! Orin's gradated locks whipped the air when her head jerked up at the sound, golden eyes narrowing with suspicion. The sound was quiet, stealthy, but was proceeded by the dampened clopping of hooves in snow. She froze mid step, one foot deep in the snow whilst the other was partially raised. Someone else was out here, and she had a sneaking suspicion it wasn't one of her pack.

Whoever was there hadn't breached d'Arte's borders just yet; it was Orin who wandered outside of Skye's marked territory, but someone hunting so close to d'Arte was almost as offensive as someone hunting within d'Arte. The familiar sound of the arrow and it whizzed through the air told her that whoever it was was probably alone, and alone told her that they were possibly a loner. Her feet steadied on the ground, eyes trained in the direction of the sounds as the summation processed in nearly an instant. All was not well in Cercatori d'Arte, and certainly not with Orin. There was a killer on the loose and she had reason to suspect that he was lurking around their borders. Her blood ran cold as she thought about Liam and his father, the snake within her own pack.

“Liam...” her voice was a guttural growl as her fists clenched tight – one tightening around the arch of wood – and she bolted toward the sound. Her movements were stiff and jerky at first, but as she moved she became graceful and fluid. Moving in the armor Mars had tailored for her was easy, and she knew these woods well. As she sprinted over the snowy terrain she raised the hunting bow that she had been out practicing with and pulled an arrow from the quiver. The blind woman, Hotaru, had gifted her with the bow and she had been determined to become proficient with the weapon ever since. She slipped the arrow into place but continued to run with the head angled down until something caught her eye, and she slid to a stop, two deep ravines dug in the snow by her feet. Luckily, the soft snow muffled the sounds she made.

She caught a flash of brown. It had to be him! If she could catch Liam out here so close to d'Arte she could prove to her family that she wasn't crazy. Liam and Taliesin really were in cahoots, and they were planning an attack on her pack! Narrowing her eyes for a better gaze, she peered through rough branches, sure that the bit of fur she saw swiftly retreating was the murderer. He must have seen her, he was getting away!

Not one to waste an opportunity, Orin focused down the length of the shaft and pulled back on her bow. She breathed out evenly, trying to steady her gaze and then whhht!!! the arrow was loose, zipping towards the target at top speed.

She apparently didn’t know just how close she was to the borders or else she would have moved further from the territory and left the deer, but seeing as she was in her hunting mood and she had caught at the deer, though not vitally, she chased, and because she was entirely engrossed in her catch she did not know she was being followed. In fact even if she was not so engrossed in her hunting, she would have not heard in any case for these were stealthy and well practiced steps. No Eclipse was headed toward the deer in hopes it slowed down from the loss of blood and the cold getting to her wound. That was when she heard an arrow being shot. Turning the first thing she saw was the arrow headed straight towards her. She tried moving out of the way but there was no time and the arrow hit her right on her arm, yelping in pain, her instinct was to fight back. She pulled up her own bow and arrow, and knowing where it had come from, she move the bow to the target, her eyes blurred in pain, but she shot anyway, then kneeled down, the pain almost too much after shooting. Looking up she wondered if the shooter was out there still. She wasn’t sure what to do, but calling out wasn’t the best thought.

So she moved, trying to hide behind a tree. Her heart was racing with fear. She had known there was danger around even from other wolves, but why would anyone shoot her? This question could have been answered simply... but there were many simple answers that she didn’t know what to choose from, so she thought it was just an evil wolf, who wanted her dead, well she wasn’t going to let that happen, she kept her bow ready, but she didn’t know how well she would be able to use it, not with her arm already injured. If only she could just escape.... Yes that was probably the best solution. putting her bow around her, she sprinted. She was a fast runner, though it was dampened by the injury, so she hoped she could get a few minutes before the other was on her tail, but she would be happy with seconds too, because she knew that whoever shot at her was looking for her.

Orin had shot at and missed enough animals to know the sound the arrow made when piercing a tree, and that muted, moist sound it made was most certainly not from a tree. Her eyes widened when she realized she had hit her mark, even though in that second she could not see the criminal who had been hit, nor where she had pierced them. There was a split second of confusion when she heard her arrow whizzing again... not, not her arrow, it couldn't be! There was no time to dodge before the wooden shaft pierced the atmosphere, sharpened tip aimed right for her. The only thing that saved the Takekuro woman's life was the fact that her adversary took the shot in haste. If the huntress had had a moment to aim more deliberately the arrow would have pierced her core. But as it was, the arrow's trajectory was shoddy at best, but the woman still felt the sting as it broke her flesh.

“Ahh!” she yelped as her hand flew up to her shoulder, covering her bicep. Wide golden eyes turned to the wound and she was relieved and a bit surprised that there was no arrow jutting out from her arm. A quick glance over her shoulder proffered the ammunition lodged in a tree. When she took her fingers away they were stained with blood, and she felt the warm fluid as it began to seep into her fur and trickle down her arm.

Instinctively, she dropped to the ground, all in an instant, for her foe might be notching another arrow right then. She was still for a moment, pressing her palm against the wound, but when no further attack came she began to look around. Had her adversary fled? What was that? She thought she heard a small whimper, but likely could have imagined it. Her arrow had hit, but how hard?

Coming to her feet but now in a crouch she slithered to safety behind a massive tree trunk, waited a few moments, and then leaned over to peer around the tree, expecting to hear the fssst! of another arrow as it zipped toward her head. Maybe she went unseen with her white pelt against the snow (she didn't think about what a great target her neon hair would make). Squinting, she saw the girl kneeling in the snow, and she jerked back out of sight.

That didn't look like much of a criminal... she thought to herself, breathing heavily. In fact, she looked like little more than a woman as pure as herself. But creatures of evil were crafty. Hadn't Argul been? Liam? She could be one of them... could be...

She took another arrow from the quiver, the shaft getting stained with blood, and set the rig. Ready for anything... “Why are you shooting at me?” She asked the trees. Her position was no great secret so she was betraying nothing by speaking. “You're near on Cercatori d'Arte ground.”

She was holding onto her shoulder about to make a run for it when she heard the voice of a female, then her question rang clear and her statement made Eclipse’s heart stop, had she trespassed and not known it? Then it was possible she deserved the wound she had gotten.

“I- I shot cause you did. Please I didn’t mean to tresspass, I was jsut trying to get a deer to present to the pack in the name of Ichika no Hoen, I didn’t know that I went too far.”

She grunted, the pain in her arm was growing stronger now that the adrenaline was dying down and she had misheard the woman, she knew that she probalby had her bow ready, and Eclipse would make a big pin cushion if she tried to run for it. She at least now knew why the woman had shot at her, but why shoot first and then ask questions later? It confused the girl, but then she did live in a pack that was beant on peace and they never really used weapons against one another at all, so if Naryu found out that Eclipse had shot an arrow at the white woman with pink hair, Eclipse would be in deep trouble.

“Please truce! I won’t shoot I promise!”

Eclipse tossed her bow so that the woman could see it flying away from the girl, thoguh it hurt her to do it, she wanted to get away from this situation alive and to do that, well she had to make sacrifices of her own. SHe swallowed hard preying for the great mother earth to spare her life, and wishing beyond anything that the woman behind her would at least take pity and know Eclipse wasn’t harmful, or that she didn’t really want to be.

Was this some kind of trick? Was there some clever scheme up her sleeve? Orin wondered to herself while the voice echoed through the trees behind her, and then out of the corner of her eye she saw the wooden arch land with a soft thunk in the snow. So she gave up the weapon that Orin knew she had, maybe she was carrying something else? But where? she thought as she tried to remember the image of the woman. Had there been any place to conceal another weapon?

Orin sucked in a deep breath, mustering her courage, and then stepped out from her hiding place, swinging around as she did so and drawing her bow, peering down the sightline. In her vision, just above the tip of the arrow, she could see Eclipse’s collarbone. Too slim a target to aim for with your skill, she reminded herself, and adjusted to point the arrow at the width of her chest.

“Hands where I can see them!” She demanded, not trusting the girl’s arms so close to her body; she could be obscuring anything. “These are haunted woods, unsafe for strangers and friends alike. What’s your name? Do you answer to Rhiannon? The truth now, I can smell a lie a mile away.” Her eyes narrowed, a fierce expression on the sleek wolfess’s visage. Of course, in actuality, Orin’s nose was as blind as a newborn’s eyes, but this trespasser didn’t have to know that. Survival was all about having the biggest, most intimidating bark.

It was quiet.... too quiet. Eclipse found herself fretting over what the other woman was doing, but she didn’t want to get hurt again. The arrow on her arm was as much pain.... well far more pain than she wanted. Her heart beat as the white woman moved, the bow pointed at her, the arrow pointed at her chest. She obliged even though it hurt her severely to pull her injured arm up, but she was scared of losing her life. She was bleeding freely and felt it trickle down as she lifted her arm but seemed to start to slow as she held it up, but it hurt still. Why was this woman so scared that Eclipse was going to hurt her? It seemed she didn’t care about the deer that Eclipse had shot, and it had gotten away probably for someone else’s meal now. It would take her too long to track and she was now injured.

“M-my name is Eclipse, Eclipse Soulstorm, I don’t know what you mean by this … ri rinome. I was only coming to visit, I was trying to get a dear. I wanted to give the leader the meat. That’s all I swear.”

Her eyes were large with worry and she wasn’t sure the woman before her would believe her, but it was the total and utter truth. She had butchered the name that Orin said, but that mattered little to Eclipse. She just wanted to live.

“I’ll leave if you want, I just came to strengthen bonds between packs.”

She was close to tears. She had been in several situations but nothing like this, nothing where her life was being threatened to such a degree. She felt scared when Itachi had come to her fire, but it was a fear that lasted a short while as he warned her to stay clear of the lands and to hide her fire. Now though this woman showed open aggression to Eclipse.

For another long, drawn out moment that seemed would never end Orin simply stood there, glaring down the shaft of the arrow at the woman in the snow, assessing her. If she chose not to believe her story then it would be like admitting that every random person out here in the woods was an agent of Rhiannon, and that was a terrifying world that Orin did not want to live in. She really had no idea if the girl was lying or not, her bluff about smelling a lie being just that – a bluff. But what she did know was that the girl was frightened through and through. For all she knew this was the end of her life, and perhaps an unjust end at that. Orin knew all too well what that feeling was like.

Sighing, she lowered the bow. “I believe your story,” she said as she placed the arrow back into the quiver slung over her back, and propped the bow up onto her shoulder. The leather strips of her armored skirt made soft sounds as she moved forward, coming closer to Eclipse, and now wincing at the sight of the wooden shaft jutting out of her arm. She suddenly went from this girl's worst nightmare, to her number one sympathizer.

“How badly are you hurt?” The answer seemed like it should be obvious, but Orin had no idea how deep into the flesh the arrowhead had bored. It could be superficial, just past the skin enough to have lodged there, or it could be down to the bone. She suddenly felt sorry for having commanded her to raise her arms. Her own wound forgotten now, she knelt down in the snow next to Eclipse, as if to inspect her arm if she would let her.

“Next time come straight to the borders, don't slip around out here like some stranger,” she instructed. “If you're hunting so close to our lands at a time like this you're liable to get yourself shot.” A half smirk appeared on her muzzle, though this wasn't exactly a good time to be making jokes.

“There are devils in this forest, creatures that are capable of doing things that your peace loving pack can't even stomach to hear of. It is a dark time, indeed. We should get you into the pack lands, and I'll find somebody to look after this wound,” even as she said it, she glanced down at her own arm as though just now remembering she was injured. Suddenly the pain lanced through her arm and she realized just how deeply the arrow had sliced, but at least it wasn't lodged in the meat like Eclipse. “I couldn't let you go like you are, if they find you you'll be dead for sure. Can you walk?”

She stood up and padded a few steps away, picking up Eclipse's bow and bringing it back to her. First she handed the weapon over, then she held out her palm as if to help her stand. Her expression shifted, pained and apologetic for the grave mistake she had made. “I'm Orin, by the way. Orin Takekuro. And for what it's worth, I'm sorry I shot you.”

Word Count » 412 :: OOC: Sorry for the delay Sad

For a few seconds Eclipse thought the woman was going to shoot. She had been holding her breath though she didn’t know it until the white woman lowered her bow telling the girl she believed her. Eclipse sighed and closed her eyes for a few seconds before opening them. Eclipse dropped her arms, and Orin asked how badly the wound hurt. Eclipse winced a little trying not to think of the pain, but it came all the same.

“It is painful, but I don’t think it got more than muscle.”

She admitted, letting Orin come closer to her. Eclipse looked at her own arm and saw it really did look worse than it was, or she hoped it only looked worse, she could move her arm, which was a good sign. Looking back at the woman she frowned slightly.

“I really am sorry, I thought I was further from the borderes than i was. I thought I had at least another mile or so to go, the wind must have played tricks on me. Truely I am sorry, are you ok yourself? And what do you mean by a time like this? Has something bad happened here?”

She wondered what had the eccentric woman at arms and ready to shoot before asking questions. Whatever it was, well it was a scary thought to the young girl who had only truely known peace. She swallowed hard as the woman spoke of things that were far to horrifying for the girl to think of. She had seen more than a few scuffles that ended in a death, though it was no one she had known. She even knew about alpha’s getting their thrones taken, though by rumor as she had been passing packlands, and then those that fed off the flesh of their kin... was that the kind of animal that lurked around here? That to Eclipse was the scariest thing. Cannibals. She took the bow that was offered to her then Orin’s offered hand. Eclipse nodded.

“Yes I think I can managed that much.”

She said, though she didn’t accept the apology she also didn’t deny it either. She was still sore about the whole thing but she was sure to forgive Orin soon enough. For now though she was quite willing to let the older woman help her fix her arm, for she didn’t know how to do it herself.

“I’ll be okay once we’re back in my pack’s territory.” Her liquid amber eyes glanced around cautiously as she helped Eclipse to her feet, only taking her by the arm that wasn’t injured. “Yes, something has,” she said, her voice a hushed whisper as she peered at nothing but space between the trees. “I fear these woods are no longer a safe haven. The only safe place is within d’Arte itself…” Even as she spoke it something about her voice hinted to the fact that she didn’t truly feel safe within d’Arte, either.

“We should get out of here quickly, if we want to live,” she urged Eclipse forward, and retrieved the bow from her shoulder. Taking another arrow, she set it into place but this time walked with the arrowhead pointed at the ground instead of Eclipse. “Once we’re there we can get inside, clean up, and I’ll find someone…” She was repeating herself.

Leading the way through the forest towards d’Arte, she only let a short silence hang in the air before speaking low to Eclipse. The forest was silent but it could have been their very own presence that caused the silent fauna rather than that of a lurking demon. “Not long ago someone was killed in d’Arte. A pup. I suspect that killer is out here now, just waiting for his chance to strike again.”

With that some spook in the woods made a sound and Orin’s arrow was unleashed. It whistled through the air and eventually lodged with a thunk in the bark of a great oak. When her nerves settled she saw that there was nothing there, and nothing had scattered either. She picked up the pace, her foot-paws crunching quickly in the snow.

“You have heard nothing of the murder?” she asked; rare was it that she acknowledged that her world was vastly disparate from others’. “The word should have gone around. The packs should know if there is a murderer roving the land.”

It wasn’t long before they approached the borders of Cercatori d’Arte. “Through these woods, just a little way in, there is a town. There we can get you some help.” But as they pressed on, not only did they grow closer to finding help, but they grew closer to revealing that Orin had shot Eclipse.

“You shot me, too, by the way!” She wasn’t angry, more matter of fact, speaking out mid thought as though Eclipse had heard her silent considerations. She raised her hand to brush at the wound on her arm, the blood already crusting in the fur. She was already having trouble making her pack see, this was only going to make things worse. She gave Eclipse a sidelong glance that, for one accidental moment, looked none too friendly.

The woman was paranoid but Eclipse couldn’t tell if it was for good or ill, but she was jumpy and she could tell. Eclipse let the woman help her along as they headed towards the territory Orin called home. She listened as Orin spoke of a pup killer and Eclipse grew fearful. A pup of all things had been killed. Yes she had heard murder of elders but puppies? She swallowed hard and the woman. Eclipse stopped suddenly when Orin stopped and shot her arrow, and her heart flew to her chest as though expecting to see something, she had her bow in hand and an arrow knocked but had not shot. She didn’t see anything, only heard something and her well trained eyes scanned the area, not seeing anything. Not wanting to waste her arrows she loosened her grip and let the string slack.

“How long ago did it happen? Word may not have come to Ichika, and I have just come back myself from the south lands. So I have not heard much word of anything myself.”

She said fearing the woman just as much as she had when the arrow was pointed at her. Fear was something to be afraid of especially when it seemed one was this fearful. She could turn on her at any second. She wasn’t sure if she was grateful to know they were closing in on the borders or not, knowing there had been a murder, and it seemed Orin didn’t even feel all that safe even in her home, her supposed sanctuary. Eclipse nodded wordless as Orin spoke of a town that had someone who could patch her up in and continued to follow. She blinked when the woman spoke to her saying she had shot Orin as well, and her look scared Orin. Eclipse swallowed knowing she was at the mercy of the other woman.

“I did it to protect myself. I’m sorry, I wouldn’t have if... if I hadn’t been attacked. I will make it up to you I swear.”

The girl said not knowing what else she should have said, the woman’s words rang through Eclipse’s ears and she was frightened now, not sure she should continue further with Orin and hope to still come back out alive.
