Cypress Big Grin

The pair had roamed the pack lands in the early morning hours, leaving the Manor before even the rise of the Sun. The air was cool, but Winter had yet to rear its ugliest of heads. The snow was scattered, thin in most places. The hunting was sparse, the prey still fat and able rather then weak and frozen in feet of snow. She led her son, but only for the first few miles of the track. It was then that she fell back, throwing her instincts back and allowing the younger and lower ranking wolf to take charge. The silver fey was happy to do so, eager to see her son's skills as a tracker and hunter.

She hung back, half a body's length behind. Anu could smell the scent that Cypress followed, and it grew stronger and soon hung in the air. The female came to the male's shoulder, silent in the knowledge that there were deer just beyond the trees before their noses. A clearing lingered in the foreground, the area was known well by any Dreamer. Rocks lined one side, too tall for either prey or predator to scale. It was a perfect place to take down a doe.

Anu looked to the brown and black wolf, blue eyes connecting with their match. She waited, to see what he thought they should do. Testing him.

Fail wait! Dang work gettin in the way of my fun :c

The day was off to a great start. Even before the first rays of light had crept over the horizon, Cypress could tell that today was going to be a good day. It wasn't often that the young male got the chance to hunt with his mother. Partially because he made
his best effort to ensure that there was no need for her to hunt, but it was also no secret that age was beginning to catch up with the Praetor. Between Oak and himself, there was always enough meat for the three of them with extra to go towards the pack stores.

The success of the hunt itself hardly mattered in his mind at this point. Just have his mother with him made the trip worth while. He had followed complacently as they had trailed away from the manor with Anu in the
lead. A silly grin split his maw and his tongue lolled between ivory teeth as he kept up with her easy pace with hardly a care in the world. A demeanor that changed as Anu slowed and gave the lead to her son. With a lick of his jaws the silly
grin disappeared as Cypress applied himself to the task at hand.

Finding a fresh scent along the game trails had been easy enough and once they had tracked it to the source Cypress looked to his mother and superior once the scents and sounds had made it undoubtedly clear that the deer they'd be stalking laid just
ahead. Only to find that it was her looking to him. There was swell of pride in his chest, understanding that she was trusting him to guide their hunt to success. Though there was no time now to dwell on the feeling. With perked ears, he listened closely to
the sounds as the deer milled around and grazed. Once he felt confident with his assessment he motioned Anu to a location where she should be able to drive the deer towards him. If they moved as he anticipated and he timed his jump just right,
downing a doe would be easy.

The dark male moved passed her, his demeanor changing and she did not need to look at his face to see it. The energy that passed was sharper, a focused flow that took Anu elsewhere. But it was not until he motioned for her to round the small group of deer that Anu realized what memory he brought forth. It was out in the western hills, a day far more snowy then this. She had played the same part in a hunt with Cypress’ father. It was one of those meetings that led to them talking about their lives, the deeper more faith and family driven aspects. As Anu began to stalk her was through the forest’s cover she had to wonder if it were her son that she left behind or Gabriel.

Instinct clouded her mind once she noticed she was upwind of the grazing creatures. Her technique called for a larger gap between she and the deer, but if she looked passed the prey Anu could see where she had left Cypress. It was then that the woman slowly began to close the gap, using her lithe form to tread lightly over the ground with barely a sound. Her blue eyes watched intently, looking for the weakness that she would focus on. Ever so slowly the creatures moved, not yet noticing the huntress approaching. Eyes scanned the hides, their long thin legs, movements and any hints of lacking grace.

A doe wore a line across her hind-end. It was a fresh wound that had likely been inflicted by another of her species. It would no doubt heal without a noticeable scar, but at the time it would cause a sharp sting. That was the one. Anu pushed her hind legs, moving to rush forward and begin the frenzy.

With silent and cautious steps the tree prince had moved himself into position. From where he stood he was just able to make out bits and pieces of the deer through small gaps the under brush. There were three, perhaps four, of them. Deep blue eyes scanned pasted the deer as they sought out their match and found them from across the clearing. Anu’s gaze was held else where as she too scanned the small herd of deer. Cypress followed her gaze to the injured doe and noticed as she grazed that she seemed to favor a hind leg slightly with her steps.

Cypress felt out the earth beneath his paws as his stance spread a little. The young wolf crouched low, muscles coiled and ready to spring forth like a lethal trap. He tensed as Anu began to push forward and the deer startled. Anticipation grew and swelled within his chest as he focused on the injured doe as they all started moving towards him. But at the very last second there was something else that caught his eye. A trace a movement that came from behind the tawny of his mother’s figure. His heart stammered to a halt in his chest and his mind shut down as instinct grabbed hold of him; recognizing the threat in an instant.

A threatening growl tore loose from his throat as the young brown wolf charged into the clearing well before any of the whitetails had come within range. His action causing the deer panic and scatter. There was a wild look in those blue eyes of his as he headed for his mother;their depths filled with fear. It was all happening in an instant but for Cypress it felt as if time had stood still the moment he saw those golden eyes and the liquid-like movement that followed them as they stalked the Praetor of the dreamers. His mind screaming for his legs to move faster so that he might make it in time.

The hunters had become the hunted.

The silver wolfess ran with a grace and speed that seemed unlikely for the Dreaming elder. It was a power that she had always held, and though it was hard to see her worth at a single ignorant glance it was obvious that the fey had been born with such a four-legged talent. Her back arched, not unlike the motions of a feline, and her lungs expanded and contracted with each powerful pace. The doe she had chosen placed pressure on it’s left forelimb, and Anu applied her own pressure. She moved slightly left, hoping to cause the deer to move to the right and closer to where her son was nested in the forest.

Yet the deer would not be herded by the wolfess, finding Anu less of a threat it turned so greatly that they almost met face to face. It leapt away, and the she-wolf saw Cypress raging forward. Her instinct held tight, and she lifted her lips to bare her teeth and expose her distaste for his choice of timing. Yet his blue eyes almost looked past the melee that burst through the small meadow. Anu slowed, and in the instant she paused in her pace she felt the presence behind her. Her features changed, and the fey turned.

It was surprise, shock and fear that riddled her now. It came over her in an unstoppable wave that seemed like an endless tide. The lion was close, too close for her to turn again and run. She could only attempt to surmount the panic and defend herself. A growl ripped through her throat, yet insecurity and fear could be heard in its high-pitched tone.

he still needs to sustain injury to his shoulder/chest before kitty goes bye bye

Cypress’ focus had already passed the she-wolf as she bared her fangs in disapproval to his actions. That had gone unnoticed but the slow of her step had not. Only slight hesitation but in the moment Anu sensed the danger lurked behind her. Cypress could feel his mother’s fear, that big cat was close, so little time.

With a final burst of speed the dark male placed himself between the cougar and his mother. He held his head low and lips curled in a vicious snarl to reveal a mouth full of the best weaponry mother nature had provided him. The gray-muzzled lion had backed off a few paces and Cypress pressed forward in hopes of driving the feline off. The sandy colored cat drew itself back as the wolf edged closer. Taking it as a sign of retreat Cypress’ growl deepened and he snapped his jaws the best. Black lips with their long whiskers pulled back as the large cat hissed and struck out with a razor like claws at the face of the young male.

A sharp yelp cut truth the air as Cypress felt the claws rip into his flesh. The vision of his left eye was obscured. He could feel, rather than see, the warmth of blood flowed over the wounds and into his eye. He shook his head, trying to clear the blood from his vision, the crimson droplets scattering like rain. Blinking, the wolf could still only see from the one eye, but he was not to be deterred and charged at the large cat again without hesitation.

The wolfess stood her ground, waiting for the feline to leap towards her. Instead, the dark figure of her son blocked her view. Sounds ripped forth from his throat and her ears fell back against her head. Her lips still formed a defensive snarl, and she still spoke the warning growl that instinct told her to speak. Anu lowered her body, tail rising slightly. The fur along her back rose and she stepped backwards with the hope of edging away and back to the safety of the pack’s core.

Cypress protected her, the lion was hardly in view. But she heard the vicious roar and the piecing cry. The male’s head turned from the impact and Anu moved a step to the side. From legs propelled her forward, moving to her son’s side the lion came into full view. Blood sprayed, it’s scent filling the air. Anu growled loudly, a bark and roar came forth as she snapped her jaw in the direction of the wild cat. But the larger wolf did not back down though his face was blood stained and weeping. Cypress launched the body his father had given to him and met the feline’s challenge without fear.

Fight or flight; kill or be killed. That was the way of the world at its simplest. Here and now there was no other option than to fight. It was too late to run and to do so would be exactly as the cat would have it. For that was the way of predator and prey. It was no different than it had been between wolf and deer moments ago.

First blood had been drawn and though Cypress had felt the strike of knife-like claws adrenaline had clouded much of the pain. There was no time to second guess; to fear what the cost might be. There was only what needed to be done to survive. It was instinct and a primal anger that drove Cypress’ forward against the mountain lion. A fury of tooth and claw. He did not hope to defeat the large cat. Thinned from a winter of hard hunting and silvering with age, the lion was still a formidable force, but he could prove they were not the easy meal it had been after.

The beast cried out as Cypress felt his teeth pierce flesh as his jaws clamped together and he shook his head violently, pulling side to side away from the cat until his grip was lost. He was left with the taste of blood and a mouth full of coarse hair, but there was no time to see what sort of damage he had inflicted. As he pressed forward again, he felt the blunt force as the feline struck at him again. There was an odd tearing and burning sensation that radiated from his shoulder and chest were the cat had struck, but he full extent of the damage was not yet fully felt. Pain blinded from the adrenaline that had flooded his system.

After stunning the larger male wolf with the blow to his shoulder, the large cat had fled. Cypress following on it’s heels for a few pace. Still ignorant to just how severely his shoulder was injured. The complaints of the torn muscles falling on deaf ears. After a few strides of pursuit the brown wolf halted, panting. He turned, looking back to his mother. ”Are you okay?” he asked, as if there was nothing wrong with him at all. He took a step forward, and then another, but with the cat gone and his mother safe the reality of his own injuries was more than he could ignore anymore and his next step faltered as his shoulder refused to take anymore abuse.

The mother watched as the blindly fast battle began and ended. There was a horror written on her face, melting with the snarls and the snapping growls that she gave towards the mountain lion. The two fought, cries and sounds of pain and fear melding with that of the roar and snarls of defense and aggression.

Then the cat retreated, as swiftly as it had attacked. Anu looked with wide concerned eyes, her body and mind loosing all the defensive fear and leaving her with nothing but fear for her wounded son. She nodded at the bloody wolf, tears welling up in her eyes and falling. Anu whimpered at the sight of him, a sound that was normal for the elder Dreamer. He needed a healer, and they were so far from the Manor. Anu wished to touch him, yet reframed from even brushing up against his tattered body.

Lean on me. She spoke as she moved into action and stood at his side. He would have to limp all the way, and she would act as his crutch.

we can fade to black here if you desire <3

The rush of adrenaline had faded and left nothing but the raw pain behind. Heavy, and throbbing. He laid there a moment, front legs sprawled as he caught his breath and gathered the will to climb back to his feet. His left leg was useless and unable to bear any weight with the way his shoulder had been sliced open. He simply nodded as him mother came to stand beside him, his teeth gritted tightly together. He leaned his weight into her carefully, still trying his best to carry the majority of his own weight even with his hopping gait.

He was just glad mother was okay. His young and able body would heal much quicker than hers and there was no doubt that Cambria would have him patched up in no time. Or so he kept telling himself. Trying to keep his thoughts positive. The walk back to the manor would be long, made even longer by how slow they had to travel to accommodate his limping gait.

Just a littler further.

We’re almost there.

By the time the manor came into view the dark hued wolf was exhausted and ever so thirsty. His body ached with more pain than he had ever known, but it had not been for nothing.
