At Moonstone Lakes

Stepping along the edges of the water Terra looked on impassively. Like a lot of the water near the ocean, it never quite froze. Small pieces she skipped over, while longer sections she walked around. Right in the heart of all of this, connecting all of the streams and lakes, was a giant one, crowning them all. The surface of this one was frozen, deep enough to sustain the cold. Terra's breath frosted as she stepped out onto it, enjoying the first few moments on the ice. She was glad to be in lupine form, her small weight spread out across the ice.

Cheerfully she began to walk across it, feeling her feet slip and slide beneath her. Soon she was dancing across it playfully, ducking in and out of the snow covered topping to the hard ice underneath. She glided across, a ridiculous appearance by all means. Enjoying the feel of the cool ice and the control she was learning Terra laughed out into the air. She began to direct where she slid, though putting out the brakes was hard.

Imhotep found himself not adjusting to being in one spot at all times and today he had taken his bay mare out after changing their scents they headed out. Though neither had really been in the land they called home for long. Imhotep clicked and the mare moved along. She was still unnerved by the male that had now claimed her and imhotep was working hard to break her of that.

He held onto her mane and sighed. This was not like Egypt where some rode camels and others rode horses with saddles. He had stole this mare and she came with nothing. He had placed a fur on her back so that they were not rubbing each other raw but she had no ties or anything. He had to but much of his trust in her not freaking out.

Slowly the two made a journey to a lake that he had been to once. Imhotep was hoping that he could somehow catch some fish if he could break through the ice. He was going to spend the next few days gathering some things to celebrate Odessa's coming of age. He figured it was the only thing he could do to thank her.

As he came up to the lake he noticed a small looking creature that seemed to be having quite the time. He wondered what kind of wolf dog thing it was. Sitting atop his mare he watched her.

Sliding across the ice Terra caught sight of a thin furred dog atop a horse watching her. Reaching a pile of snow Terra jumped onto it, stopping her out of control slide. Tail wagging cheerfully she walked off the ice, remembering not to shift until she was off. It wouldn't do for the ice to crack underneath her. On solid land once again Terra shifted into optime form. Her long hair fell over, covering her face briefly before she pushed it back. There had to be a better way of dealing with this. Terra wasn't used to optime, despite her occasional use of it. Her hair, normally out of the way from her running, was becoming a bit of a nuisance. Terra just wanted to chew it right off somedays.

Cheerfully she approached the strange dog, taking a deep whiff for information. His scent was clouded. Yes, a member of Salsola. That was good, if Terra could get him to divulge the secret that covered his scent. Terra wanted to learn it so badly, yet never seemed to get any closer to figuring it out. Good morning. Your fur's rather thin for the weather, is it not? Terra would be freezing if her fur was that thin. It made her feel cold just looking at him.

Imhotep watched as the female slid along the ice that he was planning on trying to break. He knew that there were fish still under there. If he was lucky he could get through this little distraction and get to his main goal. He only had a few days before Odessa was an adult and he wanted to make her happy. As the girl slid herself from the ice she shifted into her two legged form. She had quite the way of saying hello and it made him wonder if many of the things like her acted the same way.

Imhotep found himself wondering why she had been sliding about on the ice anyhow. “I don’t think my fur concerns you.” He said after very carefully placing the sentence together in his mind. Though he could not get rid of the accent he could still take the lessons that Odessa was giving him and put them to use. He had to really work to place sentences together in the right format and only once in a blue moon was he able to get the whole thing in a good strong order.

He looked down at her until he decided to dismount from his mare. Feet firmly on the ground he looked at her and huffed. “manners never taught good for you eh?” He commented as he moved to gather all his things. He wanted to get started he knew it would be a lot of work to get through the ice and he’d have to sit and be patient waiting for a fish to take his line. Breaking through ice would be a challenge he had never faced before.

He reached into his bag as he looked at the woman. He wondered if she was going to hang around anymore. He hadn’t tried to get her to leave but she wasn’t really one to invite her to stay either. He took off his cloak it was cold it was so very cold but he’s rather have a dry cloak then chance it getting wet if he were to slip into the frozen water a little. He looked at her and smiled as he moved towards the lake. He had a long like spike that he was hoping to use to get through the frozen water. But he also wasn’t sure how water froze or how easy it would be to get through. Imhotep huffed as he moved to the water’s edge.

He found himself placing a careful foot forward as he tapped the water with his foot. He found himself with little confidence on how well the frozen water would hold him. He placed a solid foot down glancing to look at the woman as he took a careful foot step again forward. He could only imagine if he fell in. Though he was hoping that right here in the shallows it would be stable enough that he didn’t fall in.

The strange dog thing responded much like Terra expected, briskly and reminding her that he was a stranger, and none of her business. Well, now it was. Terra wasn't going to give up that easily. She matched his stare, despite the height difference granted by the horse. Muscles ran through his body, and her own tensed slightly before he slid to the ground, letting her relax again. Much like a pup she trailed after him as he walked towards the ice. A grin spread on her face. Good manners, yes. Just not your kind of manners. For Terra, good manners meant stealing only a little bit of food, and not tricking someone into looking like a fool. Good manners meant not being caught, and being friends with the very person you took from.

Obviously their opinion on manners differed greatly, as Terra only greeted a person cordially before she robbed them. Since he had nothing she wanted, Terra felt no need to do so. His cloak was taken off and draped over the horse. Terra whined in sympathy as she knew it had to be cold without that protection. She jumped back a little as he drew out this awful hooked thing though. That was something she remembered well, hurtled at her by a very angry wolf. Terra had been lucky to not get hit, though she'd still ended up with another injury. He didn't move towards her though, instead walking over to the ice and tapping it.

That was a rather peculiar thing to do with a weapon. Drawn in by his strangeness Terra trotted over, watching him. What are you doing? Terra was braced to run in case it really was a way to get the weapon ready for attack. Maybe it had to be hit on a hard surface first or something.

Imhotep was not one to stick around and allow those around him to be little him any longer. He was not in Egypt and in Salsola he was not a slave. There for he was not to be treated as such and he was not impressed with this female that was now fallowing him. She spoke again and to him it was like stupidity just flowed from her. Not his kind of manners? So manners that each parent should teach a child had fallen by the way side with this little spawn. He assumed it had to do with poor breeding though not everyone was able to be of royal blood.

He glanced at her with his sun gold orbs. “Manners are important and you will get nowhere but maybe six feet under without them.” His thick Arabic tongue spoke trying to be as straight forward with the girl before him. He then slammed the pointed stick into the ice once or twice trying to get a good feel for its thickness and how hard he would have to work to get through it. Imhotep then placed the thing down pulling a metal stake and a hammer from his belt. The things he wasn’t sure he needed. He then placed the stake in the ice and went to swing at it when she spoke again.

“I make hole. Maybe throw you in” He spoke reverting back into his semi broken English. This was beginning to only happen when he found himself unable to slow down and be calm enough to form clear and complete thoughts. He really didn’t know why the golden colored girl wanted to hang over him he just wanted to fish and she how cold he could get.

Taking the hammer he slammed it onto the stake causing the ice to slowly crack. He grabbed the stake and moved it repeating the process a few times as he broke through the ice a little at a time. He was careful to make sure that that it was not going to break under the pair. He really didn’t want to go for a swim today.

Terra's tail twitched in amusement at his words. She wasn't going anywhere. Whether or not someone thought she had bad manners, Terra was awfully good at getting out of things and even better at not being caught in the first place. It was a lot of trial and error on Terra's part, having no one to guide her. Maybe that was why so many of her actions were mismatched, because she had no one telling her when she was wrong, only threats and warnings from those with a lower patience level.

This strange dog seemed to fit into the latter category, threatening to toss her into the hole he was making. Making such a hole seemed rather pointless to Terra, as she knew places where the ice was easier to break if someone wanted something to drink. Terra would have made the offer, if she hadn't suspected that he really was itching to get rid of her, tossing her in the hole or otherwise. Instead she sat a good distance away, tail wrapped around to watch him work. She'd definitely get a better look at this hole once it was finished. Stick her nose in it and the like. Keep an eye on him though. She didn't want to go swimming.

Imhotep ignored the coyote like woman. he wanted to make quick work of the ice. He watched her move away after he spoke about tossing her in it. Imhotep had to admit that he was content with the space. He didn't enjoy having the girl hanging so close to him. Imhotep placed the metal rod onto the ice and with a strong sand colored arm he began to hammer it into the ice. Soon he was able to see the ice chipping and breaking.

stopping he checked the ice he was standing on being sure that it was not breaking. He really had no want to go for a swim. Imhotep smiled as he continued. Strong arms made quick work of the ice as he moved from breaking the ice to taking a different piece of metal and he started shaving it. He wanted to make it big enough to fish from.

Looking at the woman he pulled out his fishing line and dipped it into the cold water. he was hoping that thee were plenty of fish wintering. But he was not sure what the types that were around here were actually like. He would have to catch them and look them over before serving them. Sometime he would have to find someone with more knowledge then him. Everything he knew was of a world not here.

The strange thin dog really did proceed to make a hole in the ice. He checked the ground a couple times, but mostly Terra just sat a short distance away as the hole formed. Once it was completed Terra wandered back over, careful not to get too close to the source of the threat. Sticking her nose in it Terra looked below. There really was nothing particularly interesting down there, just dark water with no movement. Absolutely confused Terra pulled back, watching him drop a line into it. What was he planning on doing with that?

Reaching over Terra gently snagged the line in her teeth, tugging on it. There didn't seem to be anything attached to it. Puzzled she released it. What are you doing? Nobody's gonna get tangled in the line if you have it in the water. That's what she would have used it for. Catching other canines and laughing at them while they tried to get out of it. He was definitely strange. She looked at his fur again, trying to put the clues together. He spoke broken words. He had strange fur. He did strange things. He was a luperci. All of that had to add up to something. At last it clicked. You're not from this land, are you? Not from the west, or the south, and definitely not the north.

Imhotep watched the line and only glanced at the girl who had slinked back to the hole that he had made. He wondered why she was so interested in it and him. She was slightly annoying and he just didn't get why. He stayed silent as he watched her inspect the whole and tug on his line. She was like an untrained child this humored the sand kissed man as he looked at her.

"I'm going to catch fish. Don't you know how to fish?" He asked as he pulled up the line and showed her. "This hook fish bite and I pull up and cook for dinner." He said as he dropped the line back in. He'd catch plenty as long as there were fish there.

He glanced up at the gold yellow woman and smiled. "No I'm not from here, I crossed the ocean." He spoke. He wasn't sure what she wanted to know but he was sure that she would say something. He jiggled the line a little. He wanted to catch as many fish as possible.

Terra's ears twitched with some curiosity as he spoke. Glancing at the line again Terra had to keep from laughing. Catching fish on a string seemed rather ridiculous to her. Fish managed to avoid her snapping at them in the water pretty well, and the hook was even smaller than her jaws. Surely they could avoid it much more easily. Well, if there was a meal coming Terra would be sticking around. Maybe she'd get lucky, and the dog would share some with her. She hadn't eaten fish since her last bear encounter.

Crossing the ocean was pretty huge for Terra, though she accepted it without a single glimmer crossing her face. Her tail twitched a little, but other than that there was no sign of the news. She hadn't realized the ocean could be crossed, coming from a place where the ocean was no more than a story for children. Seeing the ocean had changed that, and learning there were lands beyond it changed her perspective again. A rather warm place, I figure? Do you have tricksters there? Terra would have said coyote, but she had the feeling that she would know if there were coyotes over there.

She didn't say much maybe she was done talking and being annoying to him. He wasn't sure what it was about her that just made him so annoyed. Maybe it wasn't her maybe it was his mood. he had been in such a strange mood as it was and now he was sitting here trying to fish and freezing his tail off.

He shivered slightly as he watched the water golden eyes focused on it like something would happen. He moved the line ever slightly as he stopped focusing on the girl in front of him. The water rippled around the line as a smile graced the males features. Pulling on the line sharply he yanked the line and the fish from the water. It was nothing amazing but it was okay. He worked to pull the thing of the hook and looked up.

"Ya, I once saw one." He spoke as he tossed the fish at her. "Gift, tricksters don't live long in desert. Those who trick others lose hands or other parts." he spoke it was the truth. He'd seen a woman lose her hand for tricking a guard.

He recast the line into the water and remained silent.

Amazingly the device actually worked. He pulled it up, and a fish was attached at the end. Her tail wagged happily as it was tossed her way. Terra quickly bit into it, savoring the fresh taste. It was different from the fish she was used to eating, but still good. The fish quivered slightly as she bit into it, still alive. That didn't last long as she crushed it's head between her teeth. She licked the salty skin happily before looking up at his words.

An amuse look passed over her face at his words. Obviously they weren't very good ones then. Tricksters risk their lives all the time. The good ones simply don't get caught. Being a trickster herself Terra knew this. She'd tricked bears, lynxes, wolves, dogs, and even a wolverine once. The only animal she'd dealt with that she didn't really consider doing a trick was collapsing the den on a cougar so they could get the deer away.

Imhotep looked at her as she ripped into the thing like she had never eaten before it seemed. Imhotep got a chuckle out of it as he grabbed another hook and tied it to his line. He would have to space the hooks well and in the summer see if he could hunt with a net. Chipping at enough ice to hunt with a new seemed like a task he didn't want to do. He dipped the line in further as he attached a third hook.

Allowing the line to sink further down he waited turning his gaze back to the female as he smiled. 'They were good but gods better." He spoke. The gods and more exact the Horus was one that could not be fooled by mere mortals. He looked at her. "and if you try on me I take your hand as prize." yes he did fit in Salsola he was quite cynical in his own ways.

looking down at the hole for a moment he looked back up at her. "One knows honest work good work" His accent lacing the air as he smiled. Yes true hard honest work was the best. He knew that better then anyone.

She finished the fish in a few more bites, happily licking her lips. That was a good meal. A small frown tugged at her lips as he used a word she hadn't heard before. Gods. Terra had no idea what that was, or how they could best tricksters. Perhaps it was an entitlement of some kind, or the law that they used to chase them. The dog finished by saying he would take her hand as a prize if she pulled something on him, leaving Terra to chuckle slightly. Don't worry. You have nothing that I want. I'll be keeping my hands today. Not that she really needed hands for her work. Terra could steal just as well on four legs.

Her head cocked to the side with some curiosity Terra shrugged at his words. I've never worked a day in my life so I wouldn't know. What are gods? She looked at him steadily, waiting for an answer. Are they your alphas over there? They must be something quite powerful if they managed to avoid being tricked. The image that came to mind was the leader of her birth pack, seeming to know everything even before it happened. That was a great leader, always prepared for the next event, endless tricks up his sleeve.

Imhotep had found that he was amused by the Coyote girl. She was not your typical female as she was more apt to seeing what he was into. he could remember back home the women had one job and that was to raise children and to be well women. Men did the labor and ran the country after all women couldn't be trusted with such things.

"Good I don't feel like being coated in blood." he spoke as he went back to focusing on his line. he really wanted to see what was still alive. To him it was novel that anything had lived in this frozen water. He then looked up surprised that the woman did not know what a god was.

"No God he well takes many form. God is Pharaoh protects and rules the land. God help after death and God is ummm" He looked at her how was he going to explain this. He looked at the water and watched the cord slide through his hands a little. A fish had taken his bait and this made him very happy. He jiggled the line hoping to attract more but one never knows.

His words were simple, but it removed a lot of the threat behind him. Feeling fairly secure that she wouldn't be chucked into the hole now, or lose her hands, Terra moved closer. The strange dog seemed rather confused by her question, confirming that gods were indeed very important to him. They must have been some very powerful canines if he expected her to know what they were. Terra knew that knowledge wasn't spread equally, as she knew things others in the area didn't while being ignorant elsewhere, so found it a little surprising he would think she would know.

Her ears flattened in confusion as he said that gods had many forms. Did that mean they were luperci? Coyote had many forms, disguises taken on for her tricks. Perhaps he meant something like that. Pharaoh had her even more confused. Using one confusing word to explain another made no sense. To hear that the pharaoh protected and controlled the land turned him into an alpha with a funny title. Just like the other ones she had met. To have that tied to gods was strange, and her hackles rose at the last bit. Gods are death carriers? And you let them rule you? That was wrong, so wrong.
