The day was cold and overcast, but that did not stop the adventurous puppy from walking along the coastline. It was interesting to see the ocean in winter, an entirely different beast than it was on the warmer autumn days of his first few months. Often he would go trekking on the beach with a caretaker, searching for fragmented shells and other treasures underneath the sand, but he didn’t think he’d ever been exploring the edge of the ocean all by himself.

The melancholy that had set upon the golden prince the past few days after the bobcat had faded. While at first he experienced a crisis of self-esteem and the scrutiny and lecturing of the pack adults, he realized that he hadn’t been hurt badly by the grouchy wildcat. In fact, these were his first battle scars! He had embellished the tale as soon as he sat down with his siblings afterward, omitting the stranger that had saved him almost entirely, describing how brave he had been and how much blood had gushed out of him when the mighty talons took a swipe. With all of his growing vocabulary and stumbling kid-speech, he wove a tale so awesome that Terra would be hard-pressed to do better.

And so, cocky as ever, Skoll Haskel explored Shattered Coast. He skirted around the so-called Witches’ Cauldron within his own territory—because witches were still kind of scarier than bobcats—and paused when he could smell the scent markers. It didn’t seem that the other Court members got to this part of the territory as frequently as they did the main borders, as the odor was slightly faded, but he still stood tentatively on his side before glancing toward the ocean. There were no boundary lines out there!

The puppy wandered around the shore once more as he planned his venture out into the water. He was mostly interested in a cave he could see on the other side of a small cove. It looked like somewhere fun to explore, but it would be hard to get to it from land.

Skoll huffed, crouched on a miniature rocky outcropping, wriggled his claw-marked haunches, and launched himself at the water.

Though not as cold as an inland stream might be, the temperature and wetness of the sea caused a quiet yelp of surprise to escape him. His paws floundered, and a wave nudged him gently back into the shallows, though he was in a lower area than where he’d jumped off the rock. Another wave slapped him in the face, filling his mouth with the disgusting briny taste of the ocean and causing him to cough and sputter as he tried to fight back. He reared onto his hind legs and thrashed his forepaws at the water as if it were an enemy, though it only knocked him off balance again before getting fed up, grabbing him, and dragging him back out into the deeper shallows, where he thrashed helplessly. Luckily, the waters were relatively calm—or at least calmer than the stormy fit they could have been—but the cub who only had an instinctual knowledge of keeping himself afloat was treading dangerous waters…

Neela opened her jaws wide, taking a deep breath of the salty air that greeted her, letting the familiar smell swill around in her mouth and nostrils. The collie had been itching for a swim for a while now but had been stymied by the lack of appropriate water. The inland rivers were far too cold in this weather and something seemed… wrong about the water around Halifax. Even though the humans had been dead and gone for nearly three decades now, their dirt long washed from the waters, Neela still felt uncomfortable swimming around in the water.

The old human ships didn’t help either. Decayed by rust and stripped of most of their useful metal long ago the old, rusted skeletons were quite frankly creepy in the collie's opinion. So rather than brave the eerie waters Neela had headed south, into the area of land known as the Shattered Coast, searching for somewhere to swim. Neela's equipment had been hidden up a tree, which had been strongly scent marked, so the woman was ready to swim whenever she found a suitable place.

Unfortunately Neela hadn’t had much luck here. It seemed that this part of the coast was appropriately named, the shored dominated with high cliffs and jagged rocks. While the collie had spotted one place that would be suitable for swimming, a small beach that was located across a cove from the cliff where she now stood, when she had tried to make her way to it she had encountered a pack border, the scent line almost seeming mocking to her.

Still despite her failure to find a place to swim Neela had enjoyed the walk. While impractical the rough terrain of the coast had a certain beauty to it and it was nice to walk again in the spray of the sea after nearly a week cooped up in the city. Neela was just about to walk away from the cliff and retrace her steps to her belongings when she caught sight of something moving on the beach.

Neela squinted and a small puppy came into focus, the shape climbing up onto a rocky outcropping. Neela narrowed her eyes at the sight, surely it isn’t going to… Unfortunately the puppy had decided that it was going to swim, jumping into the water. Neela waited for a moment, wondering if the puppy actually knew how to swim, before it surfaced, spluttering and struggling.

Neela was moving before she had even registered the sight, instincts drilled into her by years of living in a settlement by the sea jumping into life. The collie sent a bark echoing across the cove to the puppy, spared a brief moment to check the sea below her, the cliff was dizzyingly high but the water clear, and then launched herself off the cliff in a dive.

The cold of the water hit her with almost as much force as the actual impact, air being forced from her lungs in great bubbles as the winded collie sunk under the water before she regained control of herself, forcing her way to the surface and gulping in greedy lungfuls of air before she started swimming.

Neela, an experienced sea swimmer, cut quickly through the water towards the floundering puppy. Water almost immediately began to trickle down her nose, the speed and force of her movements combining with the unfortunate placement of her nostrils; while the muzzle of a dog was useful for scenting, it wasn't particularly built for swimming and Neela didn’t have time to lift her muzzle into the air as swimming canines often did.

As she reached where the puppy had been Neela lifted her head out of the water, coughing and spitting out the water her nose had let into her throat as she desperately scanned around. Evidently the tides had moved the puppy and Neela could no longer see it. Treading water furiously Neela let out another bark, trying to get the puppy to sound his or her location."Where are you?!" The words were as loud as the collie, winded from the jump and her mad dash across the cove, could make them. Even as she spoke Neela was scanning her head around, looking for a golden flash in the water that would signify the puppy's location.

Even as he flailed his paws against the waves, alternately growling and whimpering as the water slapped him in the face and bounced around him, Skoll thought that he could hear a bark in the midst of the chaos. He managed to swirl around in a circle, staring in awe when he saw a ruddy, brown, and white shape fall from the higher cliffs on the other side of the cove. He yelped when he saw the creature drop into the water, terror clenching his chest as he thought he’d just seen someone die, and then a wave broke over his head and his only thought went to getting air again. He swallowed a gulp of seawater and paddled as hard as he could, trying to breach the surface, but he was so confused and his stinging eyes were squeezed shut and the water was mean and so cold!

The tides continued to toy with the child, pushing and pulling, eventually relinquishing their grip long enough for the cub to gasp for air. Green eyes squinted and blinked, and he was surprised when he heard a voice calling out to him. Was someone else there? He tried to yap, but more brine flooded his mouth and all he could do was cough instead.

“Sk-skkkk—” The golden wolfdog’s chest heaved for breath, his limbs exhausted from their constant fighting against the sea, but he managed to paddle his paws long enough to keep his head above water during the lull between the waves. “Skoll heeerree! I’m here!” he shrieked, not caring for his princely voice in the moment. Right now, it didn’t matter if he was the son of the King—he was terrified.

A spluttering voice called out to Neela from behind her and she acted instantly, changing course towards the voice. The articulation and tone of the voice indicated that the canine in trouble was, as Neela had first guessed, as puppy and this fact only spurred Neela on to swim quicker. Sea water was sloshing around in Neela's nose, throat and mouth from where it had crept past her lips and nostrils but she ignored it, forcing herself onwards.

All to soon but not quickly enough Neela reached the golden puppy, one arm snaking around its waist as she used the other to start paddling to shore, keeping the puppy high and out of the water wherever possible. Neela met a rocky outcrop before she met the shore but she accepted it gratefully, reaching out towards the rocks. While Neela was a strong swimmer being in such rough waters close to rocks made her nervous, the collie preferring open or calm waters, and this nervousness was proved earned as a wave slammed her against the rock, slicing open her palm.

Still Neela managed to keep the puppy from hitting the rock and she reached upwards, pulling herself and the puppy up onto the rocks and out of the relentless pounding of the waves. Spinning around to sit on the rocks Neela began to splutter, spitting out seawater and mucus as she cleared her throat and nose. With her throat clear Neela clutched the child to her chest, half burying the small puppy in the thick fur there and raining licks over its head, one hand gently reaching fingers around to his neck and chest to feel for breathing.

"I've got you, I've got you, you're okay." She murmured comfortingly to the young dog, wrapping him securely in a hug and planting her feet firmly against the rock, steadying herself until she and the puppy were ready to move.

Before his head went under the water again, the powerful taste of brine flooding his mouth, the frightened prince thought he saw the other fluffy canine resurface. As his body became immersed in the sea, his lungs burned as he tried his hardest to hold his breath. He squeezed his eyes shut against the burning water, curling limply in on himself like a younger cub does when it’s carried by the scruff.

That was probably best, as the child didn’t struggle when an arm tucked around him securely. Air reached his irritated nose, and he clawed slightly at the thick patched coat only to maintain his position high above the water. He hardly got a look at his rescuer before a rocky outcropping came into view, and then he felt like he would fall when the collie nearly smashed against the stones. A startled cry came from him, one choked with a cough, but then the water seemed to go away, no longer sucking at his blonde coat. He trembled, opening green eyes he hadn’t realized he’d squeezed shut again, to see thick fur and feel arms wrapped tightly and comfortingly around him.

A motherly voice whispered to him, and Skoll whimpered loudly, pressing his muzzle deeper into her thick chest ruff, getting plenty of snot on it. His paws kneaded at her lightly as if he were only a newborn, and his mind was too shocked by what had just happened to formulate a response. Only his soaked tail whipped once behind him to let her know that he was okay and could hear her—otherwise, he whimpered, and thanked the names of all the gods and spirits and heroes he knew in his head.

All good! <3 Feel free to carry 'im more onto the shore and set him down and whatever else you needa do. xD Then this thread can be more talk and less action?

Neela let out a sigh of relief when the puppy whimpered; at least the child was alive. Neela shifted her grip so that she had a hand free and started making her way carefully along the rocks, crouching low and moving almost as if she was in Lupus form to keep her balance. "Don’t worry, I'm gonna get ya back ta land." she muttered down to the puppy, keeping her voice purposely calm so she didn;t distress the pup any more than he was already upset. Despite her calm voice her heart was beating a mile a minute as she tried to keep her balance on the precarious perches created by the rocks, a task made all the more difficult by the waves pounding against her back, both knocking her with the impacts and coating the rocks in a fresh layer of slippery water.

Eventually, after cutting her hand open several times more on sharp pieces of rock as she supported herself heavily to keep the puppy away from the rock, Neela had made it back to the shore. She was vaugely aware that she was now trespassing in pack territory but chose to ignore that fact in favour of making sure that the child was okay. "Hey, ya okay?" she asked, loosening her grip to lay the yellow puppy down into her lap, stroking one hand down his spine while she spoke, "You okay little guy?" she asked him, never pausing in the gentle rythm of ehr hand running down his spine over and over again.

The pounding of the woman’s heart was an unending rhythm, a sound similar and yet so different from the waves that he was able to relax. And as it slowed down bit by bit, the pair making their way over the rocks, he calmed as well. The bobcat had absolutely nothing on this, he thought, and he might have giggled had he been less terrified. Every once in a while he’d manage to pry his little face out of her ruff, green eyes glancing over the rocky shore until water surged over them and he whimpered again.

He dropped slowly, sliding into her lap, where he curled up in a little ball. The gentle touch down his spine roused him from his nearly catatonic state, and desperately he latched his gaze onto her matronly one. His tail whipped water at the sands again.

“’m okay,” Skoll murmured very softly. “You… You saved me, you’re a hero too.” His words came ponderously from his mouth, rough from the seawater that had gotten in his throat. His sinuses burned still, and he snorted more mucus from his nostrils. Pain pounded between his eyes, and he whined once more as he nestled close to her. “N-now it c-cold,” he realized, his wet frame shuddering.

God this sucks. >_> Do you mind if we wrap this up sooon? x_x
