It’s ain’t that glamorous. It was difficult to learn true personal facts about a lone wanderer such as Tamerlane, but fact number one was surely that nothing had to be glamorous for Tamerlane to be interested. Indeed, a sweepingly open mind dictated that grit and grime was the spice of life, and it was as beautiful to him as a stunning green stretch of landscape. He listened to Phoenix’s story with interest, commenting only when he had finished. How did you cope as a child on your own? Tamerlane too had experience growing up most of the time on his own, and he knew as much as anyone that surroundings were a major factor in upbringing.

Phoenix had never asked for a perfect life. He had never expected to be insulated from the crueler aspects of life; all he had wanted was a little stability and companionship. After enough failed attempts he had finally found that in his mate and children. In reality his family was the source of his strength. They gave his motivation to keep fighting against the hardships of life. Not that giving up or deliberately ending his own life had ever been an option, but there had been low points in the coffee-colored male’s life when he hadn’t cared if he lived or died. Now that he actually had a family to live for, he very much wanted to keep on going.

The line of questioning made Phoenix pause to look at his subordinate. He wasn’t exactly sure what he was asking for because if he seemed to be showing far greater interest than would be appropriate for a wolf to have n his alpha. It was not a matter of rank but of trust. Perhaps one day Tamerlane would become a trusted friend, but Phoenix was not comfortable admitting his faults and weaknesses to someone he had just met. As an alpha he was supposed to be an incorruptible figurehead for newer members, not a humanized walking melodramatic tale. “I got by,” he answered vaguely, placing his hand on his daughter’s shoulder. If she had been the on asking the questions he would have gladly answered her. It was her right to know about her father’s past. But Tamerlane was not his child, nor was he (yet) a close friend.

Tamerlane's natural and dignified thirst for knowledge – so often quenched, and no doubt why he worked so well on his own – was far from rare. Thus, it was hardly a compliment that he had asked this question of Phoenix, and hardly a surprise when a full answer was denied him. Had he been asked the question, he would have responded similarly. I can relate to that, he said. It was a simple answer, but neither coyote was about to reveal a lot about the other to a person that was merely an acquaintance. But the conversation continued as lightly and fluently as it had done so far, the pale blue sky slowly dipping into a crimson evening backdrop.
