Dawn approached but it was not the warm tendrils of light that seeped into the maw of the den that woke the Alphess. No, Titania was up long before the sun. Slipping away from the warmth of her mate and their sleeping place in the alcove, she padded softly through the den, eyes scanning the cave to catch sight of her many pack brothers and sisters whom slept here, and eventually stopped at the mouth of the cavern. The night, this night, was quiet and peaceful. The skies were clear and the stars radiated brilliantly, their light reflected by the glittering snow. High above, mother moon looked down upon the land, half of her warm light pouring over New Dawn as if to bless and protect it. A contented smile came to Titania’s muzzle as she lowered her haunches, sitting upon the threshold of her family’s den and staring into the night.

It wasn’t long until the sky began to lighten. First, far off and barely noticeable, the stars became sleepy and dim and the inky night sky began to lighten, fading to purple and eventually rosy orange. It was a long before Titania could see much of the change beyond the trees, but as day ushered the night to bed the light slowly crept forward until it touched the tip of her paws. She watched as the shadow slowly recede as the light slithered towards her – it was funny, she couldn’t see the shadows moving outright, but she could tell that they were. The sun now kissed her paws, and she smiled as she felt her toes warm up.

“Zalen!” She barked, leaping to all fours at once and twisting with a small hop. Too bad for anyone who hoped to sleep in today! Though they were all used to sharing the den, and they had slept through hailstorms, so at best her bark would probably stir them for a moment before they rolled over and went back to sleep.

She bounded into the den, hopping through the cavern towards the cubby where she and her mate slept. Finding the black wolf still curled there, though possibly already aware of her absence, she crawled onto the rock and nudged his muzzle with her nose. “Time to wake up, sleepy head,” she sang as she licked his face. Her entire rump was swaying along with her jubilantly lashing tail. Her nose prodded Zalen a few more times, and no matter what his reaction she decided that he wasn’t getting up fast enough.

She sprang to he paws again and buried her nose in his scruff, shaking very gently as if to play, not to dominate, and then she walked backwards tugging at him, trying to pull him out of the alcove. There was a time she would never have been able to accomplish such a feat, but the Alphess had seen a growth spurt and was now a much stronger wolfess. Still, it would have only worked if Zalen went along with it, anyway.

Letting go of his scruff and leaving no small amount of slobber behind, she yipped again. “Sun’s up and I’m hungry!” she proclaimed. The pack hadn’t caught a deer or an elk yesterday – there were so many of them that they could eat off of prior kills, and others were frequently bring in smaller game to snack on – but today the Alphess wanted an elk or a deer or maybe even a crowned moose, and she knew her love would get her one. It might hurt a lesser wolf’s ego to say that they couldn’t hunt without their pack, but it was a point of pride for Titania to say that she could only hunt with her pack. Although, over the recent weeks, she was growing far more skilled when it came to tracking and chasing.

In his dreams he ran amongst the stars again. It was one of his favorite dreams, one where he could actually control his action. He and his pack, surrounded by lost loved ones, ran through the night sky, trailing star dust behind. They ran around the moon, played amongst the warmth of the sun, before flying back down to Earth to chase each other amongst the clouds. It was a wonderful dream, and it ended peacefully, as Titania moved away from him in his dreams so did she in real life. His eyes fluttered open, fresh apple orbs watching as his lithe and beautiful mate left his side to go sit at the entrance of the den. He watched her for several moments before succumbing to sleep once more.

Zalen was not given the opportunity to start dreaming again when Titania’s crisp bark cut through the air. He started but did not move from lying on his side, even when his mate ran over to prod him awake. He smiled anyway, batting at her with an absent paw as she pulled on his scruff. She was such a playful thing, she made him feel so alive.

Finally, Zalen got up to his four paws and stretched. He was still in his Optime form, as he had been since the fight with the cougar. He was not sure why he had not shifted back, but he was comfortable in this form either way, finding that moving about on four paws was not difficult despite the shift in muscle and bone. Alright, alright, let us go hunt. I’m hungry as well. He gave her a grin, swatting at her again with a large hand before bounding out of the cave. Outside he took pause, taking a moment to sniff around the clearing before turning north. Deer Lake would most likely be their best choice, it seemed that that was where most of the prey species gathered in the winter time.

Once she was by his side, they set off at a good pace, no need for stealth just yet. It was strange seeing the two walk beside each other, Zalen’s hulking optime form dwarfing Titania in her lupus form. He smiled at her as they trotted along, and a large pink tongue darted out to lick her on the muzzle, You look lovely this morning. He said softly.

She yipped her excitement, her trilling voice echoing throughout the pack's quarters, but she didn't care. He let her play, tugging him for a short moment before he got up in the peculiar way that he did. He was in his Optime form yet still the gallant man still made himself look oh so much like a true wolf. She admired the way he padded on all fours, even in what was normally a bipedal body. She doubted she could do the same in her own if she tried, and she was more than happy to remain in her wolf shape.

His large hand came up to paw at her and swiped over her head, but with quick reflexes she ducked down, her nails skittering quickly on the stone as she slipped aside. There was so much play in her now that she couldn't hold it in if she tried. He moved for the entrance of the den and she pranced up behind him, nipping at his butt just before he moved outside with a few large bounds.

“Ha-ha!” She boasted triumphantly as she pranced out of the den after him. “What's the matter? Can't take it?” Though his lunge away from her had only been a matter of timing, she couldn't help but heckle her lover a bit.

She left most of the initial decision making to him, for he was a far more practiced hunter than she was, yet she still trotted to the edge of the trees and prodded at the crisp morning air with her snout, trying to guess which way he would go. She was getting better at this, and to her delight he moved off in the direction her eyes had turned to in decision just a second before. “Hey, good choice,” she joked as she took off after him, soon falling into step at his side.

Where his strides were long and smooth, hers were quick and sprite like. They made quite the pair, they always did, but even more so now with the form that Zalen lumbered through the woods in. Comfortable within the home that they created, sometimes something would catch Titania's eye every now and then and she would stop to inspect a sight or a smell, but Zalen would only get a few paces ahead of her before the thudding of fast paws came up behind and she was prancing at his side again.

Her body and silvery white fur made sleek lines as she moved, as though she were part water elemental. Her shoulders and back stayed nearly at the same level the whole time, almost motionless even as her legs worked to draw her forward. Staring ahead for a moment, her maw parted and her pink tongue lolled out as she began to pant, even in this snowy climate. Oh, she was a wonderful illustration of her species, the Tundra wolf.

He deposited a kiss on her muzzle and she made a happy little rumble, turning her wolfish grin upon him. “And you are a dapper king,” she said, using the word 'king' only in the most playful sense. She dodged to the side, bumping into his shoulder and probably not even making him wobble in his balance, playfully nipping at his ear and trying to keep walking forward as she did so.

They were close to Deer Lake by this time, though, and the scent of buck filled her nostrils and distracted her from her game. She faced forward, remembering the solemn business of filling her belly, and her entire body too on the same demeanor. A serious soldier she now was. They broke the trees shortly after, the glistening lake now in sight. She lifted her head, putting her nose to the wind in another attempt at surveying their surroundings and trying to learn what Zalen already knew; how to find and track their prey.

“What is it today, my love?” She asked, now dropping her nose to the ground and sniffing at some invisible thing. “I scent the buck, he is strongest. But I also scent the crown...” She had a way of making up names for things and replacing their true names with her own, and she often used 'crown' and 'moose' interchangeably. She lifted her head and turned bright eyes to her mate. “We can't fell him on our own, though, can we? Not unless he is sick or trapped...” She was looking to him for confirmation, hoping that she was learning the animals and their strengths accordingly.

Zalen nudged his head against her much smaller one affectionately at her compliment but was silent as his expert eyes scanned the area. They were nearly to the lake now, its glittering waters could be seen in between the trees. A single ear flicked to his love’s voice as she stated the obvious; the buck, the crown, both viable options. But the crown was strong, much stronger than what he wanted to deal with today, it still being a young bull. The buck on the other hand, that might be a fun chase. But there were other options as well, seemingly lining themselves up on the wind as he sniffed. A ram. Ah now that was something he had not hunted in a long time. Now that they lived in higher elevations, their numbers were higher. There was a heard nearby, and Zalen looked in that direction.

His nose twitched for a moment as he though; the mountain goats would be quite fun to chase, for their agility amongst the rock was legendary. But if Titania or he could get above them, and herd them down to the other, it would make things quite easier, he turned to her, How would you feel about goat? Ever had it? It’s quite delicious. He grinned, already in his mind making up that indeed he felt like eating goat this day.

He stood then onto his hind legs, raising himself up to sniff at the wind again, They aren’t far off, just a small hike in the foothills, if you’d be willing my love. He looked down at her with an eager smile, his tail wagging.
