Hopes and Dreams

Merlin wondered hopelessly through the forest, his paws treading softly in the dirt. He felt stuck. His life didn't feel meaningful. He had helped others, drawn art and invented new ways to make his life easier. But now he felt like nothing was left to do.

He continued to walk through the forest, but soon got bored and slunk down, resting his back against a tree. He clipped open his pack and took out a wooden flute, he had discovered it on his last visit to old human land, and became obsessed with learning it, well at least he was obsessed, until he got bored of improving his skill, and just played it to stop his boredom.

He sighed, licked his lips and pressed them against the flute. He blew a few rough notes into the instrument, before playing a song he made called "A warm weather wish". He named it after his hopes of soon warm weather; he was tired of the cold. If there was one thing Merlin feared, it was intense chill.
He blew into the pipe and listened to the tune. He closed his eyes to absorb the song, hoping that it would point him away from being stuck.

Cerberus wandered through the forest, his nose tilted skyward as he thought of those that he’d met on his journey thus far - he was growing to like Nova Scotia more and more with each passing day. His mind wandered off into the darkness of the forest, his body nothing more than a dazed husk as he continued to stroll past the foliage that decorated the dank woods. All was quiet.

This seemed to be a familiar situation – only a few days ago he’d run into the spunky hybrid fighting the clutches of an overeager male as he’d been strolling through yet more forest. A small smile tugged at the corners of his mouth at the mere thought of her, his tail picking up its pace until it flipped and flopped rhythmically. And then, as if on cue, a shrill noise caught the male’s attention and his ears perked toward it, his curiosity peaked and his eyes searching. His consciousness flooded back as he stepped toward the noise, his tail pausing briefly at his ankles as he secretly hoped another young fae was waiting at the other end of what was now clearly the song of a flute.

Poking his nose through the darkness, Ceri’s mismatched eyes fell on a male wolf with a pelt the color of cinnamon and eyes like fresh tree sap. His tail wagged a bit quicker as he watched, and his ears remained honed in on the faltering tune. As soon as it seemed appropriate, Cerberus slipped out of his hiding place with all the grace that a man his size could manage, and he smiled charmingly at the other. That sounded nice, he said, looking the man over again. Have you played long?

OCC- Not at all! ^^

Merlin watched as the tanned coated wolf stepped out of the shadows of the mid-day forest. Merlin stared at the male, absorbing his question but continued to play until the last long-held note of his song. He relaxed his arms and smiled at his new acquaintance, "Thank you, I found the flute a few weeks back, but persistence at playing it has granted me the skill."

Merlin drew back his memory to where he actually found it, in a large dome-like ruin with strange paintings scattered around, and a small platform in the middle of it. Merlin found the flute resting on a table, along with some strange papers with dotes and lines, Merlin took these as well but still needed to discover what they meant.

He released his memory and turned back the new wolf, "It calms me, to play it, when I'm in a distressed mood." He knew the wolf would probably ask Merlin why he was in a bad mood, but Merlin didn't mind to tell him why. He lifted his head against the tree and refreshed his thought in his head, taping his flute with his finger, and waiting for any kind of reply to get him out of his mood.

Judging by the canine’s friendly response, Cerberus assumed it safe to take a seat near the male. He eyed the instrument in his hands curiously, all the while wondering if he’d ever learn to play something like that. He’d never even touched an instrument in his life, but he’d always loved listening to those who knew how to play, and, needless to say, he envied them.

He nodded at the male’s words, mulling them over in his own mind. It was a nice enough day – the sun was out and it wasn’t too terribly cold. But Cerberus knew well enough that weather alone didn’t always influence one’s mood, as he’d had his fair share of bad days before, especially since his brother’s death. It then became Ceri’s motive to cheer this fellow up. He seemed like a nice enough guy; handsome, talented, perhaps wise. And Cerberus had nowhere to be – he never had anywhere to be – so he deemed it allowable to spend the afternoon with this gent.

It’s a very handsome instrument, he said, his eyes finally meeting those of the other. He smiled reassuringly, and then looked back at the flute. May I see it? he then added, extending an up-turned palm. He wouldn’t be offended if the canine declined; he knew some creatures could be very protective of their treasures. But he was curious, and part of him even hoped that maybe this male might be kind enough to teach him a song. But that was a farfetched hope – he’d be happy enough just to see the flute.

He was surprised and somewhat relieved that the male didn't ask about Merlin's mood, and just sat down next to him admiring his flute. He looked down at the soft carved patterns of the wood, it must of taken a lot of designing and planning to make such patterns on such a delicate instrument. The male seemed very interested in the instrument.

Merlin smiled at the male, "Of course," He said and released the wooden flute from his hand into that of the males. Merlin smelt no pack scent on the male, so he assumed him to be a loner wolf. He wondered while the male examined the flute, if this male truly enjoyed music, then Merlin wouldn't mind teaching him a few notes or maybe a song.

Merlin didn't actually know the really notes for the flute, but through practise, he made up his own version of them. He figured the papers that he found with the flute probably had the real notes and music for the flute, but making his own version of the flute's music seemed more time consuming and least boring. Which worked well for Merlin.

Cerberus closed his fingers around the flute once it was placed in his hands, and then he turned it over and over and over, studying the structure and the marks on the sides. It was a treasure to him, simply because he hadn’t seen anything like it in a very long time. Back home, his family possessed many interesting trinkets and tools, but Ceri hadn’t bothered to gather any of them when he left. The only reminder of home that he wanted with him was the rope around his neck, and that was more of a reminder of his dear Geoff than of the rest of his family. Lifting the instrument to hold before his mismatched eyes, Cerberus marveled at its intricacies until he finally handed it back to the wolf. It’s lovely, he said, and built very well. It looks like something that a performer might use.

The coywolf offered his companion an encouraging smile then, and leaned over on his knees to watch the wolf. Would you play another for me? he asked, not really caring what he played as long as he had the chance to listen to the sweet notes the flute emitted again. That is, if you don’t mind, he quickly added. With an enthusiastic flick of his tail, Cerberus’ ears pricked forward to listen more attentively and his eyes lit up with excitement. He acted like a little kid when he had the chance to listen to music, for it had always been one of his favorite things. Unfortunately, he hadn’t been blessed with a voice decent enough to create songs of his own, but he always dreamed of playing some kind of instrument. Now he was sitting in front of the first canine who could help make that dream a reality, and the anticipation was nearly agonizing.
