meet me in outer space

A swift current of excitement pulsed through the temporary trading village, and much like a restless river, it carried on with little regard for day or night. Dark silhouettes laughed from within candle-lit tents as travellers gathered about a ring of campfires encircling the compound, and strategically placed torches illuminated any interconnecting pathways past dusk. It seemed there was only a brief window of silence and tranquillity every night, a scant few hours that lay squarely between the dying crackle of smouldering coals and the hum of activity at sunrise, when the merchants took stock of their wares, reorganised their displays, and prepared for the daily bustle that characterised this on-going event.

It was very easy for Barrett to get swept up in the commotion. The mocha-coloured hybrid knew he wouldn't see another opportunity like this unless he undertook a second trip to Freetown. Although the journey itself was not particularly arduous, it was time consuming — and by spring, he would have his work cut out for him. True, these merchants boasted little in the way of exotics (and what they did have seemed grotesquely overpriced), but what Mahavites' crew lacked in selection, they made up in convenience and quantity. And in a sea of friendly faces, Barry was in his element. After twelve solid hours of haggling and swapping tales, he was still raring to go for more. Unfortunately, his back and his wallet were not.

Thus, with his newly acquired goods in tow, he left the rowdy retailers behind. The trip was slow and cumbersome; without any travel companions, the natural light of the moon or the artificial light of the fires, the burden felt far greater. Nevertheless, he slept well when he got home. At some point during his slumber, a thought suddenly leapt forth from the depths of his subconscious mind: the pitch blackness of night was a signal! His citrine eyes shot open and he slapped his palm to his face. He was supposed to visit the kids! With a groan, the world's most ironic "Father of the Year" candidate rolled out of bed. While he wouldn't necessarily be late, he would certainly have to put any commercial aspirations on hold.

Fortunately, he was not a creature of planning or habit. Once the initial shock died down, he found himself quite enjoying the change of pace. The Dampwoods were serene; his four-legged form was familiar and light. He made good time to Anathema and had plenty of time to sift through his thoughts en route. By the time he arrived, he was able to express his excitement in a more controlled way — subdued as it was, it proved contagious. The hybrid was all too happy when the Angela and their greyscale son decided to come see the spectacle for themselves. Together, the family struck westward.

They rested in Hilsburn overnight. Naniko seemed both impressed and amused by all of the developments that had taken place since her last visit in early summer, with the newer residents least expected of all. Fortunately, their silvery son seemed to hit it off with one of them — Ezra's boy, Eli. The kids' wide-eyed pleas to come together the next day proved irresistible to the two adults and the trio became a quartet. They left early the next day and were nearing their final destination by mid-afternoon. The boys were trailing obediently behind them till the very end, when Barry flashed them a grin as they emerged into the clearing by the lake. They darted ahead to behold the festival in all its glory, and the man laughed after them. Be good and I'll let you both pick out something! With a wag of his tail and a smile to the emerald-eyed femme, he padded after the vivacious duo.
