The stillness of a hunt before it was sprung was a breath, a heartbeat. Max felt his body ripple with energy and electricity coursed through his muscles. Dark rolling eyes and bleats and bellows of panic mixed with the cacophony of thundering hooves and the snaps and snarls of his partners. All four legs pushed up from the ground and he rushed forward, a massive shaggy beast hurtling itself towards the antlered reindeer that Nate and Wraith had managed to single out from the omphalos of the herd.

Max used his size to his advantage, and the burst of speed he carried was enough to hurtle him directly into the path of the doe. She shied sharply, but he leapt and sunk his teeth into the thickly furred mass of her neck. While his teeth could not cut through the winter fur and fat below it, the terrible pressure of his jaws crushed down and turned her bleating into a gasping sound. Locked taunt, he shook his head and body, aiming to bring his weight back to earth. The doe’s one foreleg, previously wounded, gave out and she staggered. Max felt cold snow below his feet and held taunt, breathing heavily though his nose as he struggled to remain locked with her.

Myrika is by Alaine!

Her ploy in distracting the herd had allowed her clanmates to circle around, positioning themselves in the choicest way to intercept the prey's weakest ungulates. Myrika was on her belly, laying down and looking at the herd, when her partners surged from the underbrush, silent and deadly. Max leapt into the path of the injured doe, and Myrika was on her feet, flying toward them with her big, loping gait. The Praetorian more or less resembled a wolf with a coyote's head in this form, though some legginess belied coyote heritage along with her facial features. Her stride, however, was all wolf, and she threw herself on the creature's back, jaws seeking a hold on her neck. Perhaps if she had been a Secui, she could have yanked the animal until its spine snapped, but in her Lupus form, she could only hope to harry the doe. This was why they hunted together, however -- the big animal was already half on the ground, struggling to free herself from Max and Myrika.
They all moved as one unit and it amazed Wraith how in tune they were. In the heat of the moment, she and Nate were able to separate the sow while Myrika distracted the herd and Max attacked it. Since she and Nate were the ones doing the directing, it was Max and then Myrika who were the first to taste blood. Nate was closer to the herd than Wraith was, so he was careful to make sure that the injured animal didn’t run back to the group. Keeping it separated would make this easier since they wouldn’t have to deal with hundreds of flashing hooves ready to strike.

Wraith pushed to keep up and rounded around one side of the sow. She could see that Max and Myrika had gotten good holds on the animal, but it was large and they needed help. She tried to dodge around the flailing hooves, but got hit in the shoulder. She yowled in pain and rolled away, trying to get over the shock of the encounter. While she was screeching in pain, Nate came around and tried to grab a hold of the animal from the other side. He bit at its feet and was much quicker to dodge out of the way than Wraith had been.

After a few seconds, Wraith tried again to charge at the animal. This time, she tried to get behind its front hooves and launched herself at its shoulder. She dug in with her teeth and her claws, hoping to rip its muscles apart at the shoulder blade so that it wouldn’t be able to walk anymore. She wasn’t big enough or confident enough to go right for the neck, so she just hoped that this would help in taking it down. She hoped it didn’t try to kick her again, too.
