I was a young troubadour, when I rode in on a song

Word Count :: 381 Lalalala! Dated early in the month. Smile

Wayne had found his home away from home.

Originally, the Cavalieri cowboy felt out-of-place among the spiritualist Ichikans, socializing only with his new mentor and otherwise staying out of the way of the rest of the mountain pack. However, once he had reunited with Saul Stormbringer and found the ranch where the animals were kept, it was impossible to get them to leave.

He stood out in the field with Gypsy now, simply resting his head against the paint mare and rubbing his hand gently along her neck. Since their reunion, he had been spending most of his waking moments tending to her, even though he did explore the rest of Broken Arrow Ranch quite enthusiastically. The stocky horse was doing well, even in her pregnancy, though she’d yet to truly show it. Her stubborn temperament had softened, however, and she obeyed him perfectly—though he thought this was just out of happiness to see him, a trait that would soon turn back into her normal hard-headedness. The thought made him chuckle, and the mare nickered and grabbed his hat.

Grinning, the dusty-furred mongrel jerked back and watched as she trotted away with the brim of the old thing in her mouth. She flicked her tail and stamped her front hooves playfully before cantering away around the large barn. He chased her with playful barks, startling goats that meandered past, and paused for breath with his back against one of the vertical planks of wood that might have made up a shed at one point. The ranch was the definition of dilapidated, that was for certain, but it reminded him of his old home so much—of Texas and the south, of his stay with Dixie-May when they were kids, of everything. Only the chill of winter against his timber-thick coat reminded him that he wasn’t in the States anymore.

Eventually, the pied horse slowed down in her game long enough for him to spook her, causing her to whinny shrilly and gallop away without the hat. He laughed, picking up the chase once more, but simply jogged alongside her as they ran toward the edge of the ranch, overlooking the great valley. Indeed, Ichika no Ho-en was beautiful—now that he could actually appreciate is beauty for what it was.

OOC Laughs

There was someone new in the pack! Dalgina just knew it. She'd been following scents all over the place, trying to figure out where the canine was. She knew it wasn't pack, Dalgina knew that much. It was a lot of work, but Dalgina finally found herself somewhere she'd never been before, with the new scent growing stronger. Even more unknown scents flooded her nose, sending her tail into a dizzying frenzy. The scent filled the air now, so Dalgina lifted her head and went bounding forward. Reaching a fence Dalgina squeezed through. A large banging sound filled the air. Twisting Dalgina worked to place the source, finding it coming on the right.

Excited Dalgina craned her head, only to see some kind of monster bearing down on her, with a blond dog racing beside it. The creature was bigger than anything Dalgina had ever seen. The tiny pup crouched down as low as she could, whimpering, before she chickened out and dived back through the fence. It seemed they hadn't seen her, both full of happiness as they raced around. As they passed her, Dalgina stuck her head back through. Barking joyfully she raced behind them, trying to catch up and find out what this new game was.

The smell of horse and the thunder of hooves was music to his senses, and Wayne entertained the idea of grabbing the mare’s mane to swing up onto her back, a trick he hadn’t quite been able to pull off with her. He didn’t even think he’d trust to ride Gypsy without tack, remembering the long gallop through the forest they’d shared when she’d refused to obey him. Even now, in a playful mood, she was practically mocking him, glancing over her long back when he fell behind during their game of chase.

The cowboy smirked and ran faster, working different muscles than he was used to, muscles that burned after the lessons X’yrin took him through. He was getting used to instinct and speed, rather than relying on clumsy brute force. Running was different than horseback riding or lifting things, but even as his lungs burned in the thin mountain air, he felt exhilarated. He’d come back to Casa di Cavalieri changed, an evolved man, balancing the percentage of wolf and dog in his blood.

His feet falling down on the worn grass, his hand reaching for the horse’s tail to give it a playful yank, Wayne didn’t notice the dark form huddled in the vegetation. He only continued to run along with Gypsy until the sound of barks reached his ears, and he skidded to a halt, nearly losing his balance as he swung around to look. A piercing whistle caused the mare’s ears to flick and her hooves to finally stop, and she glanced over as well, keeping a distance even as Wayne crouched down to look at the newcomer: an Ichikan puppy, a little girl with black fur and oversized paws.

“Well howdy, young’un,” the Labrador mutt greeted, his low voice friendly but pitched with confusion at her presence. Where had she come from? He supposed this was her territory as much as the rest of the land, but he’d thought that the ranch was out of the way from the rest of the pack, save those who owned animals and the animal caregiver herself. He reached out with a paw, the gesture of a handshake, before realizing that she wouldn’t really be able to reciprocate; she’d at least be able to sniff his hand and get an idea of his horsy, foreign scent. He forced a smile, though it came slightly awkwardly; he hadn’t interacted with a kid before, really. “I’m Wayne, and the splotchy horse is Gypsy.”

The stranger skidded to a halt, spinning around. He looked funny, almost off balance before he caught himself. Her tail wagged as he whistled, calling the large animal to halt. Dalgina trotted over, tail wagging as she was able to slow down from the burning run she'd set off into to try and catch up. He crouched down low to her, and Dalgina immediately stuck her nose out, trying to smell as much of him as possible. The way he talked was funny, bringing a giggle from the tiny pup.

Namaste, Kanyana. She didn't know that her presence would be a puzzle, having simply done what made sense to her, following the strange new scent that had grabbed her attention. His paw stretched out before her, and Dalgina happily sniffed at it. He was definitely the source of the scent, with lots of strange wolves on him. He must have come from somewhere very far away to smell so funny. Happily she licked his hand, curious about the taste. It wasn't very good, though parts of it were interesting to try. I'm Dalgina! Where a horse? Dalgina craned her head around, looking for the tall necked bleating creatures she'd mistaken as horses.

The puppy trotted up to him eagerly and gave him a good sniff, reminding Wayne of his days as a kid. He’d gotten his nose into everything, literally—and had one ran around wailing with his floppy ears bouncing against his head, porcupine spines stuck all around his doggish muzzle. He’d been less stupidly curious after that, his sniffy stage abruptly ended. Realizing how not all long ago it was made him grin, recognizing that he wasn’t even two years old yet. This cub was only a few months herself, perhaps born at the onset of winter, a tough time to raise children in the north.

She giggled, presumably at his southern accent, and greeted him with the conventional saying all Ichikans seemed to follow. He’d heard plenty of “Namastes” during his time here.

The girl introduced herself as Dalgina after giving his callused hand a lick, but then she seemed perplexed about the horse. Wondering if the child had some kind of vision impairment, he glanced over his shoulder at the pied mare waiting a safe distance away; Gypsy’s head was low to the ground, as if grazing, but her intent eyes betrayed her curiosity for the miniature wolf.

“Right there,” Wayne said, jerking a thumb back in the paint’s direction. “You ever seen one before?” He supposed that was the more likely possibility. He doubted any puppy growing up in Casa di Cavalieri would be clueless about what a horse was, thanks to him and Dixie-May, but Ichika wasn’t as overrun with the creatures as the southern pack was.

Wayne looked over to the strange creature Dalgina hadn't seen before, declaring it a horse. Her eyes went wide as she looked at the massive creature. It was much bigger than the horses she was used to. It had a mane too, and a shorter neck. It didn't look like it would spit at her either. Confused Dalgina looked at Wayne. That not horse. Horses have long necks, and woolly fur, and go 'Meeh'. Yep, that was a horse. She even had her own, Whisper.

Dalgina had no idea that she'd mixed horses and llamas up, having only ever pictured a horse as a large long necked goat creature. As llamas fit that description, they were horses in her mind. Convincing her otherwise when Dalgina had worked so hard for that conclusion would be difficult. She looked at Wayne, absolutely convinced that she was telling the truth, and that he was wrong. It wasn't often that she questioned the wisdom of adults, but this was one of those times when Dalgina was sure she knew better.

Word Count :: 225 Cruddy post, sorryyy :c

The puppy’s brown eyes became round as she looked at the stocky, splotchy animal. She returned her gaze to him, pointing out that it wasn’t a horse—and when she went on to proclaim just what a horse was, the large male chuckled. He might have thought she was talking about sheep if not for the long necks, but luckily he’d seen the creatures she was describing when he first came to visit the ranch. They’d been strange, unlike anything he’d personally worked with, but he was sure they were useful enough animals if their wool could be sheared.

“I’ve grown up with horses my entire life,” Wayne said, offering some credibility before he turned her small world upside down. “I’ve always fed ’em and ridden ’em around, and—young’un, you’re describin’ a llama.” He smiled at her. “It is easy to get ’em mixed up though,” he added to make her feel better. “Llamas are big, and maybe a little canine could ride one. But horses are better to ride.” He turned his head and whistled for Gypsy to come closer, though he remained watchful so that she wouldn’t step on the cub accidentally. She came near and lowered her head, nostrils flaring as she inhaled the cub’s scent. “You c’n ask her if she’s a horse or a llama,” the cowboy added, grinning.

OOC Laughs

She listened as Wayne explained that he'd grown up around horses. He'd always been around them, caring for them, and Dalgina had to believe him. He wouldn't lie to her. Dalgina looked with shock at what was really a horse. Being told that Whisper was a llama was a huge surprise to her. She'd been so sure, so positive, yet in one moment her whole world managed to fall flat apart. Well, not entirely. The tochina was still blue, and Dalgina was still a special arctic wolf with arctic words, but she knew something new now, and she had been wrong.

Wayne reassured her that it was a mistake anyone could make, helping Dalgina feel a little better about the foolish actions. She certainly felt silly about doing that. Wayne called the horse over, and Gypsy blew on Dalgina softly, bringing a laugh from the pup. Reaching up she placed her paws on the horse's nose. Asking it what it was seemed kinda silly. Glancing over at Wayne Dalgina grinned. Horses talk? Turning her attention back to the funny creature Dalgina stuck out her tongue, licking her muzzle.

Mistakes and corrections were everyday occurrences in a young puppy’s life, and Wayne fondly remembered some of the times his own parents drew him aside and imparted their knowledge onto him. Cows are not for riding, earthworms are not baby rattlers, and babies do not come from the earth like crops. He remembered being especially horrified about the last one, but at least most of his lessons and even teachers had come in the form of equines. He’d had a happy existence, and he was glad to be helping this girl out, even with such a silly little amendment to her knowledge. It might even serve as practice for the future, if he was ever to have whelps of his own running around his feet and asking big-eyed questions—a thought he entertained in only the briefest spaces between other thoughts.

He chuckled at the girl’s incredulous grin, his brown eyes soft as he watched Gypsy pull away from the lick with a likewise disbelieving snort. The mare huffed again in an almost grumpy fashion but went ahead to nip the tips of the girl’s dark fur, her moody demeanor giving way to the maternal instincts that would serve her well in the months to come.

Well, horses talk if ya have the ears t’ listen, Wayne mumbled, scratching briefly at his chin. I’ll admit I ain’t got those ears on perfect yet, but anyone c’n learn how to listen if they want. He hadn’t gone so far as to learn low speech, however, as though the communication he shared with his equine companions was simplistic, it was enough for him. He did not need words to understand Gypsy or Fern and their needs.

OOC Laughs

Dalgina let out a small cry as Gypsy pulled back. Without the support her paws where resting on Dalgina was sent tumbling forward. Sprawled out on the ground Dalgina blinked with surprise, not yet caught up with the rest of her. She had been standing up. The snort brought the pup's gaze to the culprit responsible for her being where she was. The horse seemed rather grumpy, and Dalgina pouted as she gathered herself back up, sitting down on the ground. There was no reason to knock her over. A soft huff sounded before the horse began to tickle at Dalgina, nibbling at her fur. She giggled happily, squirming a little before settling into the grooming, used to being groomed by pretty much everyone she came across.

Dalgina listened thoughtfully as Wayne spoke. You need special ears for it? Dalgina nuzzled into the grooming, moving around so that it was easier for the horse's task before settling still again. Hearing that his ears weren't on well enough yet Dalgina stared at his ears really hard. If that was true, maybe they'd tumble off of him if he moved too fast. The image of them shaking around loose on his head brought a grin to the pup's face. The ears seemed steady enough though. She had no idea what he could possibly mean by them not being on right.

Half-flopped ears pricked momentarily as the girl stumbled, her balance gone when the mare withdrew. Rather than react with a conniption, the girl sat grumpily as she stood and stared at the horse. Luckily, the two made up with some nibbles and giggles, and Wayne let himself relax again. He was always on edge when pups and horses were around each other, although he trusted some horses more than others. He hadn’t seen Gypsy in a long time, however, and while he didn’t think she’d hurt a child intentionally, misunderstandings were easier between four-legged pups and moody equines. He knew he had to keep an eye out for the pups in Casa, too.

Well, Wayne began as she asked the question, not knowing how to answer. He shrugged and gave his head a quick shake. I guess you’ll know if ya have the special ears or not. Just listen sometime, y’know? Just about everything can talk to ya if ya listen. He smirked what he hoped to be an enigmatic smirk, although he wasn’t one of those canines suited to the skill. He had too much work to do to sit around listening.

So, how’s life here, in Ichika? the cowboy asked, before realizing this was a broad and abstract question for a puppy. He tried to simplify it, to get a glimpse of what day-to-day life was like for the mountain pack through the eyes of a child. D’ya have fun all day? Is there lots of work to do?

Wayne's answer to her question was not good at all. Olnayni would have given the pup a better answer she could understand. Then again, the white wolf was used to Dalgina's myriad of questions, fielding them and coming up with something she could understand. Listening to learn the answer was a little confusing. It seemed that one either had special ears or not, and that was greatly disappointing. The idea of everything having a voice that she could listen to did entrance the pup though. What would it be like, to understand the birds and the wind that blew around?

Dalgina was just beginning to drift off into her own private day dream, Gypsy almost finished grooming the pup, when Wayne cut in with a question. Puzzled she stared at the dog until he clarified, making it easier for her to understand. Her tail thumped happily. Lots of fun! Keep busy, always new things to see and learn. Adults stay busy, lots for them to do. I play with my orej, and Kiara tells me stories, and Whisper comes for walks with me! She was still disappointed that Whisper wasn't a horse, but Whisper was still fun to play with.
