[J] Who have we here?

Cadmeia stopped dead in her tracks, nearly tumbling over. Where was she? She’d been running for what seemed like forever, but perhaps it had only been a short while. Normally she was so good at paying attention to her surroundings, but the fox pup must have blanked out, for she did not know how she had arrived at this place.

She tentatively took a few steps forward, inhaling deeply to calm herself. What was this smell? It was foreign, yet somehow comforting...is this what she had been searching for? Her eyes gleamed with curiosity and excitement. Cadmeia could feel a stirring in her stomach, like a million little caterpillars were dancing about inside her. She hiccuped. Maybe it was just lunch. But as she crept closer still, the beating inside of her grew stronger and stronger, and she knew it was more than a gastrointestinal reaction. She could sense something - a feeling of acceptance, of guidance.

Cadmeia paused again - she had approached a boundary of some sort, and in her gut, she knew she was not meant to step beyond it. In the distance, she saw someone approaching. Instinctly, she lowered her body and her head in respect, attempting to appear as regal as possible. Perhaps she looked a bit silly, but her intentions remained pure. She knew, somehow, that this approaching figure was a higher being and that she must submit. Thoughts spread through her head like wildfire. She could already feel that she was different from this one, drawing ever closer to her. Was that such a bad thing? Cadmeia averted her eyes and pressed her rounded ears against her head. She didn’t want to be offensive in any way. "Please, give me a chance”, she thought to herself. It felt as though she belonged here. She shivered a little, then tried to compose herself. Cadmeia inhaled deeply, slowed her breathing, and awaited judgement.

Hadley had been walking along the edges of the pack's border, making sure that the demon hadn't returned since the last time he'd seen him. He knew that he'd be forced to learn how to defend himself, but he didn't know how to go about doing that, every fiber in his body screaming against anything that even neared violence, whether or not it was to help another. Moving along this way he was surprised when he spotted a small dark lump in the grass.

Fearful that the creature was injured Hadley rushed over. Gently he leaned down, studying the cowering creature. It seemed so fearful, tiny and weak. He reached out a hand gently to touch it's head, wanting to reassure it that everything would be alright. Lifting his head Hadley glanced around, seeing if it had any parents there. The creature was utterly alone, though Hadley didn't trust his nose to confirm that. What are you doing here by yourself? His voice was low and gentle, trying not to startle it.

Cadmeia tilted her eyes upward at the creature who appeared. ”He sure doesn’t look like me.” She studied his body. Scars. Although he looked rough to her, she could sense his kindness. Cadmeia cocked her head to look at him, still safely pressed to the ground. She saw sadness in his eyes - who was this, and what had he been through? She realized she was staring, and, not wanting to be rude, quickly threw her head to the ground and squeezed her eyes shut. How long had it been since he spoke to her? Cadmeia couldn’t remember. Was it only seconds? It felt like she had been cowering for an eternity. Why couldn’t she recognize the lapse of time anymore? Where was she escaping to in her head? And why couldn’t she remember? This feeling disturbed her, so she started to silently count. ”One, two, three, four...” Cadmeia made her best attempt to pull herself together and responded. ”Th..there has n-n-never been anyone. Only me.” Her voice was soft, almost a whisper -she had only ever practiced speaking to herself, so her voice hadn't fully developed yet. Questions...she had so many questions she wanted to ask, but couldn’t think of where to start. She finally settled on the least verbose and perhaps most interesting query she could think of. ”Please, who are you?”

The tiny fox, as he could tell now, stared up at him with large blue eyes. It was as if he was being studied by the sky itself. She didn't flinch away under Hadley's soft touch, allowing him to run his hand over her head gently. Her ears were so big for her tiny body. She ducked her head down, squeezing her eyes shut. Thinking that he'd scared her Hadley pulled away his hand, his eyes sad. He hadn't meant to do that. He wanted her to be safe and alright, not scared.

He had to bend his ears down to hear the whispering answer she gave him. So she was alone. Hadley knew that she could die by herself. He had to find someone to take care of her. The question that she asked was a familiar one, one that Hadley was beginning to learn was no longer forbidden to him to answer. Hadley. What's your name? He moved himself so he was lying on the ground, able to see her more easily. Once he got her name he'd go and ask for permission to take care of her.

Hadley. Cadmeia grinned - she liked his name. She felt safe under his touch - it was warm, and soft. It was almost as if she’d felt it before, but where? Slowly, she opened her eyes and saw his face right in front of hers. She instinctively jumped, then shook herself off and plopped back down, kneading her paws into the ground a couple of times for comfort. Feeling like she could let her guard drop a little, she made eye contact, but only for a moment before becoming insecure again and covering her eyes with her paws. This was Cadmeia’s first social interaction, so she wasn’t entirely sure how to proceed. Sure, she’d watched others from afar plenty of times, but this was different. There was only so much she could learn from observation. ”Hurry up, if you don’t tell him your name he’ll eat you. Or worse, he’ll leave you here alone...” The thought frightened Cadmeia. It was odd - she’d never been this close to another, but now that she’d experienced it, she felt like she couldn’t live without it. She suddenly became dizzy with worry, and the world spun around her. ”I....C...Ca...Cadmeia T-t-t....Teumessian” she managed to slur before her eyes fell heavy and her consciousness slipped away.

OOC add Leader Needed to the title now

A smile lit up the kit's face, bringing a small answering one from Hadley. It must have not looked very reassuring, because as soon as she opened her eyes she jumped back. Startled by the movement he drew his hand back to his side. He continued to watch her, worried that she wasn't alright. Blue eyes met brown ones briefly before the little fox had her eyes covered by her paws again. The kit wasn't doing very well. Words were at last choked out.

Cadmeia. He wasn't so good on the last name, her words slightly slurred. He opened his mouth to tell her it was a beautiful name before she promptly passed out. The action brought a cry of alarm from the large hybrid. He didn't know how to fix this. Hurriedly he scooped the tiny kit into his arms. She was so tiny, fitting in his hands just perfectly. Careful not to bump her he rushed back to the fort, searching for a leader to help him. They would know what to do, right?

Anann had been in the library. Looking through some of what had been taken from the courthouse and kept there until they could determine which of the written volumes were worth keeping and which would be of better use as fire tender. Though that was not what Anann was up to today, the sorting of the books would have to wait until she could find the time or someone suited to the task, but that was far from a priority at this stage. What the Luna had been looking for was a way to locate any old hardware stores, without having to search every little town and settlement that the humans had left behind. All see needed were a few maps and few phone books. The phone books were the hard part despite the fact that they were actually quite plentiful, but their thin pages more often than not had rotted to nothing or matted together in an inseparable block.

Anann had found a couple of the books she had been looking for. Neither were in great condition, but it was a start for narrowing the search. She was headed back towards the courthouse when she noticed Hadley hurrying through the front gate. He appeared to have something cradled in his arms and had a rather concerned look on his face. "Hadley, is everything alright?" she called out as she trotted up to him. Anann was unable to see what it was that he was carrying, though she didn't think the timid male would bring anything threatening into their home, but there was something about the way that he was acting that had her thinking that not everything was okay.

OOC skipping the unconscious one

Hadley jumped as a voice was called from behind him. The question was steeped with worry, and Hadley turned to face the luna coming towards him. The tiny fox was still cradled in his arms, and he didn't know what was wrong with it. He glanced down at the tiny bundle, watching her chest rise and fall with her breath. He didn't know what had caused the poor creature to pass out, and was worried that it might be sick. Cradling her protectively he held Cadmeia out for Anann to see.

I found her at the borders. She passed out. Is she sick? Caught up in his worry Hadley forgot that he wasn't supposed to talk to his leader so easily, being a slave and all that. Instead he was looking to her for answers, hoping that she would be able to take the tiny fox kit he'd found and somehow fix her, make everything alright again. He had cared for the fossa kittens that Leon had ordered from Amy, but they had been healthy creatures. He didn't know what to do if she was sick.

Cadmeia let out a small whimper. Everything was dark - was it night already? She wasn’t cold - shouldn’t it be cold? Slowly, she opened her eyes. Still, there was darkness. ”What is going on?” she thought to herself. It felt like she was out at sea, gently bobbing up and down in the waves. [“What? I’m moving?”] Cadmeia lifted her head, and felt something soft brush against her nose. She looked up to see Hadley, a concerned look on his face. She was wrapped up in his arms. Then, there was another voice, unwavering and bold. It was a female, of that Cadmeia was certain. Suddenly, she was moving again, and Hadley held her out in his hands. The creature before them stood upright. She was tall and lean - Cadmeia could tell she was important. Even in her daze, she remembered her manners and flattened her ears, lowering her head into Hadley’s hand.

Could she speak? Should she speak? Cadmeia didn’t know what was customary here, and she didn’t want to be alone again. Not anymore. The dizziness started to creep up on her again. She had to use every bit of focus she had to stop thinking about it. She turned her head over her shoulder, giving Hadley an inquisitive look - certainly he’d be able to tell her what was going on.

The Luna tried to catch of glimpse of what it was that Hadley had cradled in his arms, though all she could make out was a reddish hue of fur mingling among the grays and browns of his arms. Anann's eyes widened in surprise as the young kit was produced by the scarred male, dwarfed as it laid in his large hand-paws. "You're sure she was alone?" Anann asked skeptically, finding it odd that such a young kit would be out on their own. An effort would need to be made to try and find the kit's family, though if none could be found Anann supposed they would have to take care of her until a more suitable home could be found.

The poor little thing, while she had obviously waken up now, she still seemed touched by whatever milady had befallen her. "She is probably just tired and hungry. Let's get her some water and food. Then perhaps a warm place to sleep." She said to Hadley before turning to her attention to the kit. "Would you like that little one, hm? Do you have a name?" The alpha asked kindly, with a gentle tone that was most often heard whilst she worked with the horses.

Perhaps later Anann would seek out Regner later. With his medical knowledge he would hopefully be able to tell them if anything more was wrong with their new guest. Tho Anann expected it was nothing that a full belly and some sleep wouldn't cure. If the poor thing was on her own it was likely it had been quite sometime since she had a decent meal.

Her skeptical words had Hadley ducking his head in embarrassment. He had certainly thought she was alone, and the kit said that she had been alone. Trusting the tiny creature's words might not have been the best idea on his part. He lifted her up, stroking her small head softly. The look of trust in Cadmeia's eyes brought a shy smile to his lips. It's okay Cadmeia, we're just going to get you some help. Already the small kit had him wrapped around her paws, ready to do anything she needed.

Anann's words reassured Hadley immensely. No longer worried about the kit dying his shoulders dropped from their tense position, relief running through his body. He held her close, not wanting to lose her, to make sure that she was safe. He nodded his head at the luna's words, and headed for the kitchen. Pausing he looked around, trying to remember what such kits ate. He brought out some meat, not quite fully dried and softly worked his hands through it, making sure it would be tender enough. A little bit of milk would be needed as well, but he couldn't possibly leave her alone and get that. Instead he moved with the meat back to the main hall where a fire usually blazed. He sat in front of it, allowing her to nestle in.

Cadmeia shivered a little when the female spoke to her. She was intimidated at first, but worked up her courage and let out soft reply. ”Please, I would like nothing more than that. I’m Cadmeia. C..Cadmeia Teumessian. It has always been just me... She’d hoped that her response wasn’t offensive in any way - words escaped her. She didn’t want to be rude, but she didn’t want Hadley to think that she’d lied to him. She glanced upward at Hadley who was carrying her away. Cadmeia was too weak to speak anymore, but she wished she hadn’t left without finding out who that female was. She pressed herself closer to Hadley and closed her eyes - it really WAS as if she’d felt this somewhere before, somehow, but she couldn’t seem to figure out where. She’d always been alone, right?
”This must be a kitchen” Cadmeia thought to herself. She’d never been “inside” before, so everything was new to her. Hadley rummaged around a bit, and Cadmeia’s mouth began to water. She hadn’t thought about it until now, but she couldn’t remember the last time she had eaten. It was worrying the way her memory had been working (or rather, not working...).
Hadley set her down next to something warm, and only then did Cadmeia realize she hadn’t ever STOPPED shivering. She pushed herself up against Hadley’s foot, forgetting about the food, and letting her senses wash away as she drifted off to sleep.

As soon as Hadley settled in front of the fire the tiny fox kit fell asleep. He smiled gently as he reached down, stroking her back gently. It seemed she would be alright. The meat was left untouched, leaving him to try and figure out some way to sneak out and get some milk for Cadmeia without disturbing the little girl. Carefully he tucked a blanket around her, and slipped out. It only took a few minutes to get some milk and he returned with a flask, ready for when she awoke.

It was incredible, looking at the small fox kit. There was so much life and hope in her. Happily he settled in, content to just watch her and make sure that everything was alright. So much of his life was settled around caring for animals. This one wasn't much different, if able to talk when the others hadn't been able to. The fear that he would hurt her set in, and Hadley silently vowed to do everything he could to protect the tiny life before him.
