Word Count → 370 :: For Aylu! Forward dated to tomorrow, 2/25/12.

They'd spent most of the day yesterday traveling, and only spent the night very shortly in a mountain range before they moved on, soon after dawn this morning. Now it was late afternoon, and Aleksei had stopped the company to hunt for lunch. Tola shifted to her Secui form shortly after he'd left, laying down next to the fire and snuggling into her pile of clothes. It was cold up here, colder than she was used to; then again, she was usually wrapped up in several layers of dresses, not just a pair of pants. She understood now the uses of such things, but her stubborn streak refused to give in and put on one of the few she'd kept. Aleksei knew better; he'd built up the fire, and she snuggled closer to it now, her head resting on her paws as though she were about to fall asleep. Her eyes remained open, though, staring into the marshy grasses and at the small wood that Aleksei had gone into. They'd camped close to a river, and she could smell many scents around here, among them the disgusting vermin and other, unrecognizable canines.

She barely blinked as she searched for Aleksei, wondering if he would take long and if, perhaps, he'd manage to bring down something other than deer. If she knew how to fish, she would, but alas that was a skill that had been virtually useless back home. Her gaze glazed over as she waited, and after only a moment, she felt Aljan settle between her shoulders, enjoying the warmth of the fire and her body more than anything. His presence comforted her, however, and the darting shadows she'd seen across her vision dissipated, making her relax, even though she hadn't realized she was tense.

Chant nosed the grasses on the other side of the fire, free for the moment of their baggage. She nibbled lightly on the marsh, and then moved further, soon coming into Tola's line of vision. The young Saluki lifted her gaze, blinking slowly as the large horse registered in her mind. The three sat, and waited for dinner in the case of Tola and Aljan, though Chant was content to eat the grass nearby.
