We're the Same

Happily Adelle snuggled into the snow, trying to disguise herself from sight. She remembered the mistakes Skoll had made, carefully keeping her tail tucked in and thoroughly burying her head so the ears wouldn't stick out, flopping around her head. Just her nose and eyes were visible from her secretive ambush place in the snow. Looking around quietly Adelle was careful not to disturb the snow, watching everything around her. A couple birds flickered over head, everything quiet and calm.

It wasn't long before the large puppy's eyes started drooping, bored of her watch. Determined to not leave her self assigned post Adelle rooted herself more deeply into the ground, propping her brown eyes extra wide. She managed to stay awake for a few more minutes before her head dropped, and Adelle fell fast asleep, snuggled deep into the snow.

Cadmeia slunk through the snow, keeping her wits about her. She had only recently been accepted by Casa di Cavalieri, and the territory was still very foreign. Even though she felt safe here, she was a little wary about who or what may be hiding in the shadows. This was also her first chance to really get to know the area without the guidance of Hadley.

Examining the area around her, Cadmeia nervously cocked her head to one side. At first the snow ahead of her appeared flat and untouched - but as she squinted, she noticed a nearly invisible trail of prints leading towards her from the distance. Crouching, she slowly crept closer, flattening her body against the ground. Upon further inspection, Cadmeia realized that the tracks stopped at something, perhaps a small mound of snow. Curious, she pricked her ears up and began sniffing the pile. The smell reminded her of Hadley.

Cadmeia pressed her nose further into the mound, relishing in the scent. Suddenly, there was a stirring, and the mound began to move.

Adelle was dreaming that she was a warrior, fully grown. Her paws had been replaced by hands, and she held an axe in her hand. Grandpa stood next to her, and they faced a mighty herd of faceless enemies. Together they marched through, destroying their foes. Grandpa looked at her in the end, declaring her one of the best warriors he'd ever had the honor of battling with. Adelle smiled happily, and her tail wagged, bringing her out of her dream.

A nose bumped her, and Adelle sat up, the snow shifting from off her. She looked around, trying to figure out what had happened. She'd been standing watch, hadn't she? Well, really over a pile of snow that no one cared about deep in the territory where no intruders would come. She'd still been doing that though. Adelle looked over, finding a tiny little creature looking at her. It didn't seem to be a canine. Adelle stuck out her nose, sniffing the tiny thing curiously. What are you?

Startled, Cadmeia stumbled and nearly fell over. A creature had emerged from the snow - it was like Hadley and the others, only smaller. It began sniffing her, enough to tickle, and Cadmeia had to hold back her laughter. ”Stay focused, this may be an enemy!” Cadmeia didn’t truly think the creature would harm her, but she was alone in an unfamiliar territory. Now that she thought about it, she probably shouldn’t have been roaming around by herself. Judging by the features of this creature before her, Cadmeia gathered that it was probably young like herself. It probably shouldn’t be alone either.

The golden animal before her then spoke - Cadmeia couldn’t help but grin (although she tried to hide it). The creature wanted to know about her. It made her feel warm inside - the voice was not intimidating at all. It sounded lively with a fleck of curiosity. ”Vulpes vulpes,” Cadmeia replied, presenting the creature with her formal Latin name. As it stared back at her wide-eyed, she realized that it may not know Latin. “I..I mean...fox...I’m a red fox! Who....what....and you??”

The tiny creature squirmed as she sniffed it, clearly tickled by what she was doing. Adelle grinned happily, sticking out her tongue to lick the funny creature's face. A large grin covered the creature's face, bringing an answering one from Adelle. This was fun! Most creatures around her size were scared of her, probably because she'd eaten it at one point. There weren't very many puppies around, but this seemed like it could make a good friend, small and young like she was. Granted, Adelle was almost three times her size, but that didn't matter.

The answer she was given wasn't very useful. It was the same word twice, and not one that Adelle knew. She had to wonder if it was one of those english words she didn't know so well. Cocking her head Adelle studied it carefully, trying to figure out what she meant. The little one must have realized Adelle didn't get it, because she gave another name. Fox! Adelle knew what that was! I'm Adelle! I'm an ovcharka! Pleased with her new friend Adelle bowed down. Wanna play?

A hot, wet tongue stretched out and covered Cadmeia’s entire face. She laughed a little and looked up. Even though it was young, the animal towered over Cadmeia - but she was no longer scared. The creature then perked up and barked a cheerful response. ”So your name is Adelle. And you’re a dog!” Cadmeia thought it was a pretty name. The pup then lowered her head and requested that they play. ”How does one play with another? She tried to think back, tearing through her memory like the pages from a book - had she ever watched “playing” before? She knew what it meant, but she didn’t exactly know how to put it in to practice.

Cadmeia nodded and pressed her body to the ground so she could look Adelle in the eyes. This one looked lonely in a way - perhaps not the same as she, but lonesome nevertheless. Instantly, Cadmeia wanted to be friends, to spend time with Adelle.. She tapped Adelle’s nose curiously and waited for a reaction..

The fox lowered down as well, nodding her head in agreement. Adelle could scarcely hold still, wriggling with excitement as she realized that she finally had someone else to play with. Her nose was tapped, and Adelle bounded back, barking with excitement. She was tagged! Adelle spun around quickly, everything glorious in her world. She had a new friend, and someone to play with, and they could run around all day together!

Darting forwards Adelle almost tackled the fox, managing to halt just in time. She tapped the fox's shoulder before bounding away. You're it! Adelle raced over the land, her burly body forming a clear path through the snow. Since she was so large Adelle was literally breaking through it. It slowed her down a lot, making her move at a much slower pace than she could really go at, and leaving an easy path for someone to follow. She wouldn't be caught though! She was super Adelle!

What was this? Cadmeia was frozen - Adelle came bounding towards her, and for a moment it looked like she was going to plow right through her. Then she placed a large paw on Cadmeia’s shoulder, nearly pressing her into the dirt. The pup bounded away, barking with delight. It only took Cadmeia a moment before she realized she was meant to pursue. Without another hesitating moment, she dug her rear paws into the ground and used her tiny (but strong) legs to push her off, kicking up snow as she went.

Cadmeia was swift, and since Adelle was clearing a path, she had no trouble making up distance. Every move Adelle made, Cadmeia mimicked, leaning this way and that. She used her excellent observational skills to notice that Adelle was slowing down - just slightly. ”Being a living snow plow must be tiring,” Cadmeia thought. With a few extra powerful strides, she pushed close enough so Adelle’s tail brushed the tip of her nose, then leapt through the air, hoping she’d land on her target.

Snow was flying around in the wake of the two children. Adelle puffed, barking with excitement as she dipped down and back up, occasionally coming back up with mouthfuls of it somehow having landed in her mouth. She couldn't hear Cadmeia's approach over her own thunderous paws, but she did feel something brush her tail. Yelping she pulled it in, hoping that would be enough to prevent tagging.

Unfortunately for her the kit had a much grander plan than simply grabbing at Adelle's tail. Soon after something came flying out of the sky, hitting Adelle on the back. Surprised Adelle broke to a stop, looking around wildly. Her friend had disappeared! Twisting around the best she could Adelle spotted a flash of red clinging to her back and grinned. So that's where she went. Promptly Adelle flattened herself and pushed into the snow, trying to shake loose the tiny creature.

Cadmeia was off Adelle’s back as quickly as she had landed. As she latched on to the pup’s thick fur, she felt Adelle slam into the ground with a force so intense that Cadmeia lost her grip and flew forward. Turning around, she saw the silly dog shaking off like she’d just come out of the water. Cadmeia couldn’t help but laugh to herself - it was apparent that Adelle hadn’t noticed.

Suddenly, she had an idea. She prepared herself by crouching, tensing up her hind legs and digging her claws into the ground. Cadmeia then launched herself high into the air, streamlined. She dove forward and prepared to make contact with the snow. She felt her paws break the icy crust, making it safe so her face didn’t get cut up on the edges. However, instead of sliding straight through as she thought would happen, she suddenly stopped, hitting something unexpected beneath the snow. Cadmeia was stuck. All she could do was wait for Adelle to help her get out. Then, she could examine the object she had just struck.

Adelle popped herself back out from where she was at the sound of laughter. The curious puppy looked around, searching for the source of the noise. Nothing seemed to be there. Sitting down Adelle twisted her head the best that she could, trying to figure out if Cadmeia was still on. It didn't look like it. Putting her nose to the ground Adelle began to move across the ground, tracing the scent of the fox kit. It didn't take long before she reached a burrow in the snow, the tip of the kit's tail waving behind.

Curiously Adelle padded to the side, searching for where Cadmeia's head came out. It didn't seem that it would. Whining softly she knelt down. Adelle wanted to ask what she was doing, but the pup didn't have the words to ask, and she probably wouldn't understand the answer anyways. The only solution would be to dig out the snow so that Adelle could see what was there. Hurriedly Adelle started digging, snow flying through the air as she cleared the area around her new friend. Once the kit was loose Adelle sat down. What there?
