Until moments before Kiara had been sound asleep. Her underground den was warm and easily retained her body heat. X'yrin's scent was quickly fading from the fur that lined the den's interior while the scarf no longer smelled of the golden lady. Kiara eyed the scarf in the dim light, wondering why she had it in the first place. Because X’yrin gave it to me. It was the same thing with the fur and with her necklace, they had been presents. Such items were marks of the luperci, things no natural wolf could use or make.

Six months ago the young arctic wolf had set out to find adventure, to learn of the world beyond her secluded valley. Life in the valley had been simple. They lived as their ancestors had. It was a much simpler life, were most of the problems and worries of the luperci were non-existance. Sure, her life in the arctic was hard but it was a rewarding life. Once Kiara became capable of hunting their small pack had moved away from the dens and slept under the stars. Their pack was at the whims of the earth and had to brave terrible blizzards. It always came down to survival of the fittest and every day was a fight for survival. Even so, Kiara missed that life and all it’s simplicity.

Slowly the arctic wolf stood, her desire to return to the arctic was stronger than ever. Kiara crawled out of her den and into the open. The crisp spring air flowed into her lungs as the white wolf stepped out onto the frosted ground. Somewhere a bird was calling to greet the morning sun. Blue eyes scanned the forest, stopping momentarily to look at the first buds. It would be a beautiful day, but somehow that didn’t cheer Kaira up.

The mother-to-be wasn’t in the mood for her usual run along the old human highway. In fact, she didn’t want to see anything resembling human artifacts. Kiara moved out of the forest and away from her den that was filled with shifter’s items. The bulging white form moved swiftly through the forest and out into the valley. She didn’t care where she went, she only wanted to walk away form her troubles. Kiara walked for what seemed like an eternity, her feet simply taking her blindly through the world.

Before long Kiara paused, her mind finally taking in her surroundings. She had somehow appeared in front of Carne Rise. Greif swelled up in her chest and she bolted. Kiara didn’t want to face anything at the moment. Kiara gradually slowed she passed through the familiar streets and towering buildings. Without any apparent reason, fear started to grow inside of her. Everything surrounding her was foreign and strange. Those awful doors stood at every entrance and mocked her. Some were closed and prevented Kiara from ever entering the building. Others remained opened as if to lure her in and shut behind her to effectively trap her inside.

Fear continued to rise and soon gave way to panic. Kaira didn’t know what she was afraid of, but she knew she had to leave. Once again the arctic wolf bolted and she ran as fast as her pregnant body could take her. Kiara ran until she reached the mountains and even then she didn’t stop till she had reached the peak. The white wolf only stopped running when she had reached the Ichikan boarders. The only things that marked the boarders were the scent markings left by the members of Ichika. During the spring, summer, and fall the boarders were marked with flowers. However, there were no flowers to pick and Kiara was grateful for it.

Once the adrenaline and fear had dissipated, sadness and exhaustion took their place. Kiara sat in the forest and looked out over Ichika no Ho-en. Everywhere she looked there were the signs of luperci: cities in the distance, Abbeys atop the mountain, the ranch not to far down the slope. As Kiara looked out onto her pack land she couldn’t help but wonder; did she belong there? Did she really have a right to live among the infected and retain her natural form? She was a stranger to their ways and customs, and most of the time she was rendered confused or helpless.

Noah’s words drifted into her mind, ”Times have changed….I am more natural then you are, and more then you’ll ever be. You are the freak of nature, I welcome the changes my body can take.” Was he right? Was she really a freak of nature? Kiara had originally spat the insult back in his face, but now she wasn’t so sure. For the first time, Kiara felt like she had no place in the world. She felt like a loner, a stranger in a foreign land. Perhaps it would be best for her to return to the arctic.

Just as the though had crossed her mind, a sudden movement came from within her. Kiara felt a tiny paw push against her swollen frame. It was only for a moment, but it was perhaps the most wonderful thing she had ever felt. There was life within her. Kiara looked over the Ichikan land again, her thoughts now focused on the life that was growing within her. If she were to return to the arctic, her puppies would die. Kiara was a first time mother with no mate. She would not be allowed back into her old pack because she was a threat to the status quo. Even if by some miracle they did survive, could she really hide her children away from the world? Could she leave them clueless and in the dark like she had once been? Could she expose them to a world that they didn’t belong in?

Kiara debated whether it would be best to leave or to stay. She sat atop the mountain until the sun had set and the moon had begun to rise. Sapphire eyes watched the moon cross the sky and still she wasn’t able to decide. It wasn’t until the moon had set and the morning birds started to sing that Kiara finally made her decision. The arctic wolf started down the mountain, her steps more confident then before. It took a long time for her to reach her den and when she did her limbs were practically shaking from exhaustion. Kiara crawled into her den and buried her face into the scarf. She took a deep breath and inhaled the remnants of her alpha’s scent. Heavy lids closed over sapphire eyes and Kiara dreamed of her children playing with Dalgina and Sarian while the rest of the pack watched and laughed. It felt good to be home.
