And he looked for judgement

It had been weeks; long weeks, and now they had finally confirmed what he had known from the start. Henrik sat atop the pale horse, overlooking the encampment. His followers had worked well, and worked fast. They had been in Nova Scotia for a little over a week now, and preparations were in order. The old wolf saw that this was a land not-yet lost. They would need to work quickly to see if such a thing was true; he had already begun dispatching his subordinates to scout the neighboring packs.

“Sir,” a voice called from below.

Henrik’s blood-colored eyes fell and met those of his son. It caused the boy to dip his head, but he did not require such primitive submission as he had seen in other wolves. Especially not from his son, who was nothing but loyal. Perhaps a little slow at times, but loyal to a fault.

He nodded once, allowing the boy to continue. “Jonas has gone south. We have yet to send scouts north.”

“And who do you suggest?” The elder wolf asked. Jannik, hearing the test within his tone, straightened his shoulders.

“I say send Hasse. If these coyotes are anything like we suspect, I would rather lose him. Louis can trail after him.”

Pleased, Henrik nodded. He waved one hand dismissively, and watched as Jannik turned back to the encampment. They had done well to hide themselves, and despite the large amount of horses they kept, he doubted anyone would be able to find them. Henrik turned his horse and set off to find Emilie, intent on assuring himself that she had begun seeing the horses that had suffered limps on their way to the land.

Jannik did not waste his time in finding their remaining scout. Louis was less talkative then his brother, and well aware he would be traveling. A long cloak was already on his shoulders, disguising his weapons well. The brown wolf slowed his pace, and spoke shortly. “You are to head north. We are sending Hasse as well; he will not be your responsibility,” the older male added, noticing the look of disdain on Louis’ face. “Go when you are ready; do not let yourself be seen.” With a nod, Louis crossed himself and quickly headed towards his supplies. The horse and hawk did not take long to prepare, and he was already gone by the time Jannik found their newest recruit.

Hasse was an oddity to him, small and unsure of himself. Being a boy, he had an excuse; but Jannik had been hardened by his age and had no mercy in him. The scrawny male was sharpening his sword and started at Jannik’s approach. He rose quickly. “Sir,” he said, his voice still light as a boy’s would be. The older wolf frowned. “I am giving you a chance to prove yourself,” he said flatly. “Leave your weapons here and travel on four legs; see what you can find about these northern packs. If they see you, you are not to attack. If they attack you, you are to flee. I want to know what sort of beasts these coyotes are,” he rumbled, knowing that they were all the same.

“Yes sir,” Hasse replied, and rose to sheath his sword. The boy did not take long to shift, and looking even scrawnier, took off in his lupus form following the trail that all had been indicated to take. Jannik sighed and returned to his other duties; he was impatient. The fact remained that until they knew these lands, they could not begin his father’s glorious plan.
