Pain. Kiara eyes shot open and her mind raced as pain shot through her abdomen. Without realizing it she had howled, the intensity of the pain and sudden intrusion on her sleep had caused the involuntary reaction. Almost immediately she shut up. Gingerly she stood, her bulging belly and swollen teats aching as another wave rocketed through her. Her vision spun a little and she almost collapsed back down onto the soft deer fur. By some miracle the pregnant female managed to remain standing and her pacing began.

In the dim light of the den the white wolf moved back and forth. Every few minutes another shock of pain would run through her like lighting as her uterus convulsed. Kiara had to bite back yelps and whines as her body rocked. Her pacing became more frantic as her restlessness increased. Kiara ducked into the passageway of her den as she moved down, up, and out into the open. The day was very young; the moon was still on the horizon and the sun had yet to rise. Mist swirled around her feet as the stars shined above her head like diamonds in the sky. The sight was breathtaking, and Kiara almost forgot her pain.

A yelp escaped her jaws as a particularly painful contraction hit her. Kiara dropped to her knees before she gingerly stood and raced back into the den. It wasn’t safe for her outside, although it looked like she was alone. Good. she thought. Kiara didn’t want anyone around, her maternal instincts refused to let any potential danger close to her puppies. To occupy her time while she waited, and while she could still stand, Kiara worked on rolling up the fur blanket she had been given.

Once her blanket and blue scarf had been safely tucked away into a corner of her den, she was able to lay down on the bare ground comfortably. It would be terrible if her precious gifts were covered in blood. White ears flicked back and a small whine escaped her jaws as another wave of pain shot through her. It was going to be a long day.

The stillness of the den was what woke her this early morning. When the days filled with rambunctious motion had become the norm, resting upon furs in a home filled with motionless bodies was almost unsettling. Slowly the beastlike form of the she-wolf rose, uncoiling from her protective embrace around the trio of pups in the couple’s care. Quickly their den had turned from a lover’s escape to a pup’s haven and she offered no complaint along the way of this transition. Each time she recalled this, she smiled and envisioned the large home overflowing with pups made of hers and Saluce’s love. It would be a like a dream… one she could never regret.

Despite her mountainous size, her movements were silent and fluid as she parted through the nest of bodies toward the open mouth of the den. Feathers thrown every which way fell underpaw as she walked, some falling from her wild mane as her body rippled with each powerful, quiet step. And one such feather fell upon the nose of the sleeping tyke, immediately stirring him from his peaceful sleep. Her steps were halted near the entrance when the soft cry of attention went out, immediately turning the she-wolf’s head to the expecting twinkling eyes of the pup. Sharply, she clicked her teeth together commanding silence out of the pup before he disturbed the others then ushered him forward with a beckoning sweep of her tail. ‘Come’, the tone of her posture called out to the child. Happily he bound forward nearly tripping over himself in the process and came to stand beneath the woman’s shadow looking to her for guidance.

Then quietly, the two stuck out into the still morning, greeting the two avian watchers above the den with grateful nods as they passed by. The woman’s restlessness compelled her to walk the familiar grounds of the Valley without the purpose of marking the borders. They would be taken care of throughout the day… and this morning would be hers to share with the little one. And such a beautiful pre-dawn it was with the lingering hues of velvet night riding the vivid bands of azure and orange as the still hidden sun began its ascent. One could get lost in such beauty… the reverence, immeasurable. And as peace became her, her senses awakened further and stretched beyond herself and the boy to touch the furthest reaches with these blessings of the ancestors.

An ear twitched left to a muffled sound disturbing the quiet while the familiar scent of a friend caught her nose. Ah Kiara… the kind light that shown endlessly within Ichika’s embrace. Why the expecting mother would be out at this time, she did not know, but did not feel comfortable leaving her curiosity to fend for itself. Was she alright, the woman thought as she walked swiftly the short distance to her neighbor’s abode with little Salvador in tow by her train of auburn tresses. She approached the den with caution, taking care to sniff the exterior before playing the invasive Alpha exercising her protective nature. “Kiara?” she whispered into the darkness with ears straining forward. “Kiara are you alright?”

Puppy #1:: +530

Inside the quiet dim of her den, time passed with no recognition and seemed to span for an eternity. The pregnant female was periodically hit with waves of pain, each one growing stronger and coming sooner. Kiara did her best to stay quiet, but she was so uncomfortable. Occasionally she would rise and pace again, but when another wave hit she would lay down and pant. Ever once in a while she would whine quietly until the fresh wave of pain subsided, only to be hit by another later.

Kiara didn't know how long she had been siting alone in her den when her water finally broke. She didn't know whether to think of it as a relief or a curse as the liquid ran down her back legs. Either way, her contractions began with increased force and the white female was forced to lie down. As the pain ricocheted through her body her ears drooped and another soft whine escaped her lips.

A familiar call into her den alerted Kiara to the presence of an intruder. One quick sniff told her the golden Alpha had arrived and fear built up in her breast. Kiara was vulnerable, her puppies were coming, and the Alpha had intruded on her den. The arctic wolf wanted nothing more than to chase the golden giant away, to protect her puppies from harm. But the pain and increasing number of contractions prevented Kiara from even growling. Rather, she simply whimpered quietly and curled into as small a ball as she dared to. She wanted nothing to do with X'yrin, she wanted no intrusion during the birth.

Once again, a contraction hit, but the pain was immense and it lingered rather than faded. Instinct had ruled Kiara's morning and it continued to drive the young mother through the labor process. She strained and worked until the first puppy arrived, wet, bloody, and tiny. Kiara reached around to detach him from her and to clean his small body. At first, he didn't breathe. His mouth opened and closed without sound or wind passing through his throat. Kiara licked his colorful body with a firm tongue and a minute later, he took his first breath of life. His high pitched cries sounded through the dark den and the white mother carefully picked up his small body to move him closer to her. In the dim of the cave she could make out his tiny form, and he was beautiful. His head was predominantly red, with a patch of grey over his brow line. There was a saddle of grey descending along his back and all the way to the tip his tail. A streak of black descended down his shoulders and across part of his back. His paws were patchwork white, tan, and red while a red streak rested on his chest.

At the moment his eyes and ears were closed, leaving the small puppy deaf and blind. Even so, he crawled slowly through the dim to nestle next to his mother and to have his first meal. Kiara continued to lick him, to clean him and nuzzle him while she waited for the next one to arrive.

When there was no voice to greet her, the she-wolf worried that something harmful had befallen the female and such worry compelled her nose further into the den to inquire, forsaking the threshold of privacy to see what had become of her friend.

But the stench of something wet and familiar stilled the female with only quivering calloused flesh intruding inquisitively. The scent of blood… of life, the same scent that had once filled her den at the birth of Nayru’s pup. And now it marked the interior of Kiara’s. Another inquisitive snout protruded into the den until the curious boy was roughly caught by the scruff of his neck and urged away from the mature scene. There were wails within the den that pulled both their ears forward and signaled the first life brought into this world. Though she could not see, she was none the less aware the pup was alive and well and it was a cause for joy.

Carrying Salvador in her jaws she quickly left the scene and hurried back to her own abode, whimpering and whining for her mate’s attention. “Saluce!” She called around the scruff of fur in her firmly clasped jaws. Reaching the entrance, she placed the pup down and nudged him into its warmth and safety. “Saluce, wake up!” the autumn woman called again, no doubt waking the pups with her exuberant boasts. She was a mess of excitement bounding in place, beating her heavy paws on the ground in a waking rhythm. “Kiara had a pup! Kiara is having her pups!!! Wake up, NOW!” And as she said that, X’yrin dove back into the darkness of the den and made a line towards the back into a small crevice carved into the wall. Piles of dried meat had been stored there, mainly for Sophie and Boothe than themselves, but at this moment, the cache became a precious offering to the mother in labor. Food was always a favored gift and now with life to feed, she would need it.

Gathering mouthfuls of meat so large it about tore her jaws apart, she ran back out of the den and toward the birthing site.

As always the slumbering male was a deep sleeper, while he was attentive and alert to changes while awake, while asleep…. Nothing could wake him except for the affections of a female, and even then she was lucky if she got him up the first try. His waking mind fought the urgings of his mate, not quite hearing exactly what she was fussing about, and her excited tone was shrugged off as unimportant to his prime directive of continuing to sleep. Since they had brought the brood of puppies into the den, sleeping in had been denied him, most mornings their whines and shuffling around and playing in general would stir the beast and he’d immediately curse his existence. This was not how he would prefer to be woken up, he’d much rather be woken up to find a randy she wolf pawing at him but such things where a memory now, and he now understood why his ancestors, those alpha males would kill the young of any other than his mates, because your own children where enough, let alone others… But it wasn’t a thought entertained with any serious nature, just one of irritable annoyance in the mornings.

It wasn’t until Boothe and Sophie started whining and stirring, while the little Salvador whimpered at the den entrance did he wake fully. His blues looked around at the den, finding it devoid of the she wolf and the puppies looking around as if a storm had wandered through. Blinking he rose to all fours stretching his form and otherwise not being too excited. It wasn’t until the two older pups started whimpering at the den entrance did he really think something was up. His mind whirled a bit trying to recall his excited mates romp through the den, with a sigh and finally gave in to their excited worried voices and ushered them out of the den.

While they all went about romping in the dirt patch that had grown since acquiring them all he looked around and sniffed the ground around their den looking for her most recent scent and the direction in which she had left. Again his foggy mind couldn’t really piece it together but her direction suggested Kiara, and her mention of puppies it all seemed to come together in some giant puzzle and finally he was awake enough to understand her urgency.

“Alright lets go see what’s going on shall we?” he said softly, as he started walked towards Kiara’s den. He didn’t intend on any urgency, if she was indeed in labor, X’y was more than enough to handle the ordeal, and he didn’t want Sophie and Boothe, the two who were growing into adolescents to come across the sight of birth, nor did he want Salvador to either. So his long stride was shortened as he was surrounded by all three’s boundless amounts of energy.

Along the way Boothe decided to start attacking him, while Saluce admired his enthusiasm it was irritating, normally all it took to dissuade him was peeling his lips backs and showing his teeth but today the boy seemed to be deadest on challenging him. Saluce moved rather quickly when he came up to bite at his ears, using his shoulder to roll him off and nose moved forward to nip at his upturned neck, while holding him down with a massive paw. The big behemoth had to remind himself to be gentle, since he had noticed the two were extremely cautious when it came to big males like him, and his aggressive reactions only reinforced such things so when he reacted he tried to maintain his calm so he didn’t evoke that response from them.

When Boothe seemed to be satisfied with his standing in this makeshift pack, he carried on toward Kiara’s den. Reaching it in time, he motioned for the puppies to stay outside as he poked his head inside. The smell of blood and birth greeted his nose, along with the whimpers and soft small cries of those already born. His blues looked to the two females for a moment, nodded and back out he went. Child birth wasn’t really his department, he’d entertain the puppies outside while X’y took care of the new mother, while waiting for the okay to let everyone be introduced to Kiara’s new brood.

Puppy #2 :: +421

After being in almost constant pain for so long, the white female was beginning to get used to it. Somehow with the sight of her first born nestling next to her and suckling was more than enough comfort to keep her going. He small, colorful body and occasional yelps brought a sense of joy to the young mother that she had never experienced before. She could bring down the whole world and experience a lifetime of pain for him. She could move mountains just to keep him safe and happy. He was hers and hers alone. Kiara bent down to nuzzle him softly, and he yelped in response. His small head rolled upward as she pulled away.

The noise and scent from her den momentarily disappeared, giving relief to the worried wolf. No distractions, no intrusions. That was what she needed. Kiara winced as another contraction rocked her body. Her heavy panting filled the den as minutes passed. Sounds reappeared at the entrance of her den, but Kiara had no time or energy to focus on what was happening outside of her den. She blocked out the outside world while she concentrated on bringing her second puppy into the world. After pushing for what seemed like an eternity, relief came as the second puppy was born.

This time, Kiara was a little more careful in retrieving her puppy. With the young male nestled close to her body, her movement was limited. After cutting the second puppy loose, she focused on cleaning its small body. Soon, it too began to breathe and wail. The second puppy was almost completely different from her first. It was a little female, although she too was as beautiful as her brother. She had a a stripe of red that ran from her muzzle to her tail. The tip of her tail was dark grey, and there were patches of grey on her forehead. The rest of her body was a bright white like her mother's coat except for a patch of red and grey on her chest. Kiara smiled as she gently dispatched the little female next to her brother. Almost immediately the two began to push at each other as they both vied for the same spot. Kiara picked up her son and moved him further down, chuckling a little at the sight. Once again, while she waited for the next puppy to arrive she licked and cleaned her daughter and son. High pitched yelps filled the den and brought her dim world to life.

She knew she was late in returning but the time a second set of wails joined the first. Though these bundles of life were not her own, X’yrin was behind elated for what transpired within Kiara’s home. It was the coming of precious life, the continuation of a line composed out of Nature’s necessity and a consummation of fondness between two hearts. Though it was unfortunate that only one would be able to experience this fulfillment and see the fruits of that joining, the woman knew that as long as she was able, she could this generation as though she had been part of its making. She would help as she could, despite her own bitterness at the absence of life on her part. What mattered only was what the ancestors sought to grace them with, and she would accept their blessing in whatever form.

Her offering was placed at the entrance of the den and carefully nudged in while doing her best to remain just out of the private scene. Though her curiosity was boundless, there was an instinctual respect that surfaced each time she drew to close. Yet it was conflicting with her role as Alpha and caretaker, she knew better than to go against the nature the Exultare praised above all else. So when the meat was shifted just at the lip of the den, she retreated a safe distance and turned her ears toward the den as she maintained a constant vigil.

The arrival of the remaining family was met with tones of caution not to disturb the miracle taking place just out of reach for their eyes to observe. Though the site reeked of blood and birth, more a ground of death than life, such scents indicated the delicate nature of what transpired. And as spectators, their role was better set to guard and ensure this birth transpired without ill-favored intrusions.

“What is going on Uncle Sal?”

a jumping, tail wagging beast asked as she romped around the much bigger male knowing something indeed was going on just within the den. Saluce looked at the little girl with a smirk as blues looked over at the much bigger Boothe tackling the smaller Salvador. While he kept a close watch on the two he addressed the charming little girl with a laugh.

“Kiara is giving birth to puppies. When everything is done and over with I’m sure she will allow you to go in and greet them.” Saluce pranced in place a bit as his own excitement shown through a bit. But keen blues picked up on the play going on just out of his reach as Boothe started to get just a bit too rough with the smaller boy. He swooped in quickly, Boothe weighed a lot for his age, but his maw snapped around the nap of his neck and lifted him off the ground. With the squirming boy in check now he brought him to his smaller but much more able sister and dumped him next to her.

“Pick on someone your own size Boothe. Salvador can’t take as much punishment as you think he can,” he said with an air of authority. Sophie thankfully took the queue and pounced her sulking brother and the two of them went off romping around the entrance to her den with Salvador now chewing on Saluce’s tail. Why he was picked to baby sit he had no idea.

Two puppies down, one to go. Kiara knew giving birth would be painful, but it didn't really prepare her for the long hours and multiple waves of pain. White ears flicked back as another spams of pain hit her. It wasn't long before the Alpha had returned, with company from the sounds of it. Thankfully, X'yrin didn't enter her den, which had allowed the new mother a slight chance to relax. The smell of dried meet wafted into the den and Kiara licked her lips. She made a mental note to retrieve the food after her labor was completed. Until then, she would have to satisfy herself with afterbirths.

Kiara shifted slightly to allow her puppies easier access to her soft underbelly. They wiggled a little and slowly crawled close to her large, warm body. In between the spasms she would firmly lick her babies and take in their individual and unique scents. Kiara nuzzled her daughter, and the newborn wailed back in response. A small sigh escaped her lips as voices drifted into the den. Black lips momentarily pulled back into an ugly snarl before yet another contraction hit her, which sent the white female into a defeated slump. The scents of several she didn't know, and one she did, drifted into the den. Saluce had arrived and the extra company sounded fairly rambunctious.

Just like the first two times, another wave of pain flooded the mother and wracked her body. Rather than dissipate, it remained and Kiara worked to bring her final puppy into the world. A small whine escaped her lips and then relief. The exhausted mother leaned over to retrieve her final charge. A pure white female, just a hair's breath larger than her elder sister. Kiara smiled as she roughly licked the tiny baby till it too began to wail. The chorus of young voices filled the room as the final puppy was deposited next to it's siblings. Kiara worked for several minutes, cleaning and inspecting all of her children. Each one was unique and had a different coat color. The only one identical to its parents was the youngest female, her coat a pure white like her mother's fur.

When the labor process was complete Kiara gingerly picked up each puppy and deposited their clean bodies onto the pile of deer fur in the corner of her den. Kiara tucked each one in and triple checked their locations to make sure that none were in danger of falling off. Her tired form shook a little as she crawled out of the den. On her way to the surface she gobbled up the scraps of meat that were placed just inside the mouth of the den. The young mother paused slightly before she completely exited the den. Kiara didn't want to leave her newborn children, but the spectators outside had to addressed. A weak smile crossed her face as she sat down heavily on the ground. "Hello."

When there were no longer the pained breaths of labor, the woman about lunged forward to the mouth of the den to observe the aftermath of the young mother’s struggles. She had felt helpless sitting outside of the den rather than assisting in the delivery, much like how she had felt when Nayru had given birth inside her home. But she could be there as a support, she reasoned. She could at least try and help after the birth, ensure the mother was fed, retrieve whatever she needed to calm the lingering pains. On anxious paws X’yrin danced in front of the den, leaving Saluce to entertain the pups as she sought to assist Kiara.

But when a spot of white muzzle emerged from the den, she lept back to allow the mother out. Her tail was in a frenzy as she admired the glow of birth surrounding the white female and whined at the tired smile on her face. Excitedly, she circled around her patchwork family sounding her joy in yips and short-lived howls before nearly toppling into the young mother as she ran to her and buried her muzzle into the white scruff of her neck.

“Hello dear mother!” she exclaimed, burying her muzzle deeper into birth-scented fur. “Congratulations. And welcome to the new life that has come into this world by your commendable efforts. The day shall smile upon you, as will many more that come. Truly you are blessed by the ancestors, my friend.” She felt a little nudge on the back of her leg by a tiny wet nose inquiring what had happened. What had the Alphess so excited like this, those little dark eyes wished convey as they looked from one female to the other. Withdrawing from white fur X’yrin looked down to Salvador and smiled, knowing he was too young to understand but none the less shared the excitement with him. “This female has children, just like you. Little ones that will grow and one day you will get to play with. You and your elder brother and sister. Isn’t that wonderful?”

For a first time mother, her delivery was an extreme success. The puppies brought into the world without a hitch, and mostly without interruption. Although the commotion outside made the new mother nervous, the pack had managed stay out of her way. She didn't want anyone to harm her children, and the extreme paranoia she had succumbed to categorized the pack members as dangerous to her newborn puppies. Somehow, the excited canines managed to stay out of Kiara's way and out of her den, which gave Kiara some room to breathe.

Golden paws dance just outside of the mouth of Kiara's underground home. As she pushed her way outside, X'yrin jumped back to give the exhausted mother room. The Alpha's excitement was tangible and contagious. Her white tail wagged a little a tired grin formed on her face. She had done it. She had brought her puppies into the world. When X'yrin began to circle the group of canines and howl, Kiara couldn't help but join in. Together, they announced the birth of her children and celebrated the new life. However, midway through her howl, the much larger female barreled into her causing Kiara to stumble. X'yrin's excited nuzzles were met by Kiara's own as she buried her head into her friend's shoulder.

X'yrin's address to Kiara made her smile and she weakly thanked the Alpha. It wasn't until the older females were interrupted by the puppies that Kiara even noticed their presence. The arctic wolf wagged her tail and strode up to inspect the puppies. Just like her own litter, Saluce and X'yrin had brought three puppies with them. Their eyes stared curiously at Kiara and her den as the golden female explained to them what had just transpired.

OOC goes here.

Howls came from X'yrin and Kiara, reaching a napping black ball of fur. Dalgina uncurled from her spot in the sun, blinking sleepily. What was that? She listened as another one came out, really happy. Immediately she bounded out, wanting to be where everything was so happy. It was exciting and new and something that Dalgina was going to throw herself into so happily. She broke over the hill, not as small as she used to be, standing taller than all the other pups there in the clearing.

Dalgina paused, happily sniffing at the new pups, curious to who they were. Kiara's smell grabbed her attention the most though, making her frown with worry. Was that blood? Kiara couldn't get hurt. That was bad. She seemed saggier as well. Dalgina wandered over, poking at the stomach curiously. Did the puppies shrink? She looked up, wondering what had happened and why everyone was so excited over what had happened.
