Mother's little girl

Early evening time

The day had been a whirlwind of activity and Jace was now only just beginning to wind down, it had taken a good few hours but all of their stuff had been unpacked from the horses. And the horses themselves watered and fed. The children too had been fed although Jace herself had yet to eat and such the gurgling in her stomach was beginning to get distracting. Their new home was smaller than their old home although not by much and was laid out differently. There were only two bedrooms instead of three and the kitchen and living room were separated by a wall.

Approaching dusk found Jace outside of her home, looking over the overgrown thorny bushes that lines its edges, a frown distorted her face as she wondered what the best way to get them up would be. With the members living so close together like this rather then spread out as Ichika had it reminded her of home, of her birth pack. Although they had not stone or wooden houses to keep them warm and dry. Temo was scouting out the premises of his new shop turned workshop, she had not seen him so enthusiastic about four walls and a roof before, it was quite funny really, with him being normally such a reserved person to see him incensed outside of their carnal relations was strange.

The children were inside sleeping or so she presumed, they had had a long few days out in the true wilderness. Her face softened from its frown into a tender smile that transformed her entire face. Her children, her heart. She wondered idly what Elsie and her mother would have thought of how she had raised them so far, her tender smile also faded leaving behind a half frown as she considered the sunset beyond the trees.

She couldn't sleep. Dalgina didn't care how excited Papa was about the big building he was given, or Keldava's excited yammer that continued until she fell asleep. As much as she loved her tingla, Dalgina just didn't feel the same excitement. It was so unfamiliar in this house, and it seemed a little scary, even nestled into a big pile with her orej. Dalgina slipped out, deciding to try and find Mahn, so she could take away the pup's worries.

Being told that Mahn was responsible for their moving somehow hadn't connected with Dalgina. She wasn't mad or upset with her, just sad that they had left. Since Mahn always managed to make her feel better when Keldava failed, that was where she went. Tripping down the stairs Dalgina worked her way through the house, body crouched low. She was large enough that one could tell she was getting close to shifting now, no longer a puppy but becoming an adolescent very soon. Stepping out Dalgina looked around in the dimness, relieved to finally find something familiar from the eery layout she'd been wandering through. Mahn.

pp agreed

A soft voice brought her out of her thoughtful trance and the small woman turned. A motherly smile replaced her frown and she took several steps towards her third youngest child before lowering herself to her knees, bringing herself more on Dalgina's level. "Come." She knew that the move had been hardest on Dalgina who was a very outgoing child and had made friends with the majority of Ichika, it hurt Jace to see her child so upset but the decision had been unavoidable, two forces colliding and something had to give, in the end it had been herself to give in and leave.

She motioned Dalgina closer whilst setting down on the floor, intending to cuddle the young girl up close to her chest. She did understand, leaving what you saw as your home was never easy, even less so when it was not by your own choice, memories of running for her very life flashed before her eyes, the terror, soul deep terror was something she had never lost in her years of life. Her voice was a rumble in her chest, low and quiet as she gently stroked her daughter's head,

"No matter what happens, know that I will always love you, whichever path you choose." There was a very real possibility that as soon as Dalgina was independent she would leave and return to Ichika, the very thought filled her with a fiery agony, would she be strong enough to watch her go or would she destroy their relationship to keep her close by.

Dalgina took a small step back at the sight of a frown on Mahn's face, though it was quickly replaced with a gentle comforting smile. Her tail hesitantly wagged, hoping that it was okay. Mahn came closer, the setting sun painting everything an eery orange. As soon as she was called Dalgina bounded over, glad to be able to nestle back into Mahn's arms and feel safe from all the frightening changes that had happened in her life.

Lifted up Dalgina buried her head into Mahn's chest, breathing in the comforting scent. She was glad that she still had her talnala. Dalgina wouldn't be able to handle it if she had lost that. The black head was softly stroked, a comforting motion that let the scary thoughts go away. As long as Mahn was there the monsters wouldn't get her. Her face furrowed with confusion at the words though. Glancing up Dalgina quietly asked. Choose a path? What path?

But hopefully the day wouldn't come too soon when Dalgina would want to leave her, she seemed to still be so attached to Jace and the rest of the family. The confusion upon her face was darling, she may be growing into her adult body faster than Jace would like but on the inside she was still just a little girl. There was still so much more to teach her, so much for her to experience. Jace liked to think she was a good mother but even she did not have eyes in the back of her head and Dalgina despite her love of her family was the most untraceable of her four pups, often wandering right outside of the territory like she had done in Ichika.

Childish confusion stared back at her, still ever her little girl. The girl buried her head in Jace's chest and her own memories from long ago surged to life. Staring back at her purest of white mother who had seemed so tall, tall and strong, unbeatable. Jace strove to be like her mother, to emulate her, the female strength in her early life. Her mother that she dearly missed, there wasn't a day that went by that she didn't mourn her death and wish that things could be different. Her sister, her twin was even more, the half of her soul that Elsie had been was gone leaving behind a gaping emptiness that could never be filled not even by Temo. The dull ache in her chest throbbed all the more, those two females had been her rock, her anchor in life, their deaths had left her floating in a strange, hostile world.

"When you get old enough you will want to make your own decisions about your life, what you do, who you see, where you live, what pack you want to be with or if you want to be alone. I will help you where I can but when you get older you might not want my help." She finished, grimacing internally at the idea of it.

Older. Always when she was older. At moments like this Dalgina thought things would never change, that she would always be too young to understand. No matter how long she had lived, there were always these things she wouldn't understand, such as the strange sorrow on Mahn's face. Why was she so sad? Dalgina didn't like it, reaching up to lick at her face and do her best to take away what was there. It was so absolutely terrifying, seeing her Mahn weak.

So many things that she would be deciding about! Dalgina didn't even know where she would begin. Being alone was a scary thought, and immediately Dalgina knew she didn't want that. She wanted her talnala there with her, always. Dalgina couldn't even imagine a time when that wouldn't be true. Not want Mahn's help? Stubbornly Dalgina shook her head. No! Always want Mahn. I don't want to be without you. Never.

She knew it would be difficult for Dalgina to understand, children could seldom understand the workings of an adult's mind and the reasoning's behind an adult's actions which made it all the more confusing because it appeared as though things had no reason and were simply decided for the sake of it. She was glad for Dalgina's attempt at comfort even though the pup couldn't know the sorrow that she held, hopefully she wouldn't have to know it until she was well grown up and Jace was an old woman shouting at birds and pesky children.

Jace had once been young enough to think that her mother was utterly invincible, that nothing would ever bring her down, no force on earth could destroy her. Now she was older and more wise she could feel only pity as she saw that her own children had the same thoughts about herself. She saw Keldava's adoring looks and the way Honrin hung onto her words, how Dalgina looked to her to prove the monsters could be kept away by a good story, it would make it all the more terrifying for them when they did discover that she wasn't infallible, that she could make mistakes and mess up badly just like everyone else.

"If you don't want to go then you don't have to Dalgina, but the choice is there if you want it. Like I said Me and your father will always love you and you'll always be welcome to stay with us." Such a heavy conversation topic for one so young.

She listened, worry showing in her eyes until Mahn assured her that she wouldn't have to go anywhere. That was good. Stubbornly she buried her head into Mahn's coat. It didn't matter at the moment that they were so far from ignala or that life was uncertain, she had her talnala and that was all that mattered. The tiny pup curled up. comforted by the sweet words of love.

Blinking up at her Dalgina smiled. I love Mahn and Papa too. She would always love them. Nothing could change that. Sighing happily she watched the sun, dipping down below the sky. It looked frightening still, but wrapped in Mahn's arms Dalgina found peace. Her eyes began to droop, exhausted by the long day, and finally held safe.
