Like sun itself

All welcome! This is for CdA's "Spring is Here" thread prompt: plant something in the garden. The opening is a memory of when she got the bulbs at the winter festival. You're welcome to assume you see/run into Orin at any point between or in the garden and the stable.

“You like color, this make nice color…” The man promised her when he presented her with a bunch of ugly, dirty bulbs. Orin had raised an eyebrow at the man, and put her palm up to reject his offer but the coyote leaned in closer with that million dollar smile, winked, and said again, “Is like sun itself.” She couldn’t resist the temptation, couldn’t resist the promises he made, but still looking at the bundle of bulbs dismayed her. They looked like a bunch of hairy onions. “I show you, yes?” Orin nodded and followed the man into his tent. He disappeared into a back ‘room’ obscured by gauze curtains, and when he returned he had the finest golden yellow silk frock in his arms. “Could have color like this…” Orin reached out to touch the glossy, brilliant fabric…

* * *

“Okay, so you guys are supposed to give me the color of the sun…” she said to the netted bundle as she set it on the ground, then righted herself to survey the garden. Although it was still early for Nova Scotia’s spring, the garden was thriving. It had always been a point of pride for the d’Artisans and it was easy to see why, looking at it now. The pack – or at least a very diligent someone – had been tending and mending it to bring it back to life after it was ravaged by winter’s frost. There was more green than anything, but it was clear that in a few weeks this place would hold a lot of color again.

Orin walked around the perimeter, circling the entire space once and looking down the rows as if she had any clue what she was doing. Well, she had planted something once that had been semi successful. It was last fall when she rooted a row of pumpkins. Although then she had the help of… the help of…

“This looks good,” she said to herself, picking a spot of soil because it looked fairly damp and the sun shone here well. She knelt down and ran the soil through her fingers. Yes, it was damp, but it was also packed hard. She knew it was a gardener’s job to churn up the soil before planting; she had done the same thing with the pumpkins, so she stuck by her decision to use this particular spot for her bed. But of course, in order to do that, she needed the spade.

Sighing, Orin looked over her shoulder at the stable where she had just come from, then resignedly stood and paced towards it. As she walked she tried to run through a list of things in her mind that she might need to bring back with her, but could not think of anything. Yep, she was probably in for a long day of going back and forth…

OOC Laughs

Dalgina was still not very good at going out and meeting others. Taru was her friend, and she really liked her, but that was it. No one else in the pack would be her friend. Aylu didn't count, since she met him in Ichika, so was an Ichika friend. Yep, she was going to remain true to her pack. Not to mention all these new people were pretty scary. Dalgina wasn't brave enough to go out and approach them. Sometimes she thought about doing that, but she never really did. Wandering around Dalgina thought about spring, all the colors coming out. Kiara had explained it as everything turning green, but there were lots of other colors too.

Like here. There were plenty of flowers. There were huge empty patches of dirt as well. How curious. Dalgina trotted over, sniffing at it gently. That didn't seem so bad. She shuffled around a little, this time pawing at the dirt. It squished under her paw, drawing a giggle from the pup. Bounding this time Dalgina reached the other side, and began to dig. The dirt flew away under her feet, far through the air. Dalgina lost herself in the world of dirt, burying through with a giant smile on her face, slowly covering herself with as much dirt as she was removing.

hehehe! OMG! <3 You are free to PP Orin swinging or just assume she saw and stopped, but preferably for both of us she doesn't actually swing and hit. Wink

Once inside the stable Soraya the Cow mooed at Orin, but she waved her hand dismissively. “I already fed you this morning, you’re not hungry yet.” To which Soraya replied a very angry MRRRR! Orin snorted but kept on walking, passing Soraya’s stall and grabbing the shovel from its mount on the wall. As she walked out the cow made another unhappy noise, and she spun around and threw her free arm in the air. “What do you want from me?” She asked as if the cow ever responded intelligibly. Soraya just looked at her with those sad eyes and then her jaw began grinding like it always did, even though there wasn’t any food to be seen. Orin knew, thanks to Shiloh, what she was really doing, but she pretended not to notice.

“Okay, you can come stretch your legs but you have to stay out of the garden,” she warned the cow as she opened her stall and unhooked the tie line. One hand around the shovel, the other around the cow’s lead, she returned to the garden with the spade and Soraya the Cow in tow. She knew so long as the cow was distracted with the grass that she wouldn’t bother the garden, so she found a nice place where the grass grew verdant and tall and left the cow to snack.

She spun on her toes and began to march back to the spot in the garden when the sight that caught her eye made her cry out in surprise. She dropped the shovel and her hands flew up to cover her mouth, golden eyes wide. The ground… it was suddenly mystically churned! In the short time she was gone it had been dug up and milled… and, apparently, was still being milled because some of it was still moving! Orin couldn’t see an inch of the small black pup beneath the sea of soil. What kind of animal would dig up a garden like this?

Then it dawned on Orin… what kind of animal… Quickly, she grabbed the shovel and held it aloft, approaching the place where whatever vermin was destroying the ground. No doubt it was some sort of rodent come to eat away all of d’Arte’s prized crops.

“Oh no you don’t! She yelled as she stepped up to the spot, the shovel held high over her head and prepared to come down hard on whatever stinking parasite was trying to creep on their garden. “You’ll rue the day you messed with d’Arte’s garden, you dirty rat!”

OOC goes here.

Dalgina's tiny patch of earth had quickly spread, the pup happily tunneling through her expanding kingdom. The patches that weren't dug up were by far smaller than the ones that had been. The spread only stopped where the plants started, leaving a perfectly churned area for others to use. Dalgina wasn't aware of that though, just humming happily as her tail swished behind her. Telling where pup ended and dirt began was now impossible.

A yell grabbed Dalgina's attention. Her ears flattened, wondering what was wrong. She looked up to see a shovel swinging down, a cry about messing up the pack's garden in the air. A wail of fear broke from Dalgina, crouching down as low as she could, brown eyes as big as they could go. The shovel halted luckily, leaving her alive and in one piece. She stared at it, wondering if the tochina had decided to help her, stopping herself from being struck.
