A simple Song

The moon was high in the sky and she couldn't sleep, the stars her guide to where she was heading. Adonia was completely done with her heat, it had been a few days since that hormonal state had passed, thank heavens. She traveled some ways away from her special den where Ookami stayed, her bird becoming a little fascinated with the large brute that was now a silent company to Adonia. He was quite drugged up it seemed, probably with all the herbal remedies she fed the large male. Either way, he had become a body to sleep next to, and the bird was becoming fond of him. Adonia didn't mind for the time being, but she knew if things were going to go sour it would be hard for the bird to part from his new entertainment.

She had sat at the beach in the far top east area of the pack, her ears perked listening for the crashing of the waves. The full moon high in the sky giving off a calming light over the beach. She looked up to the stars, a beautiful sight. The sounds of crickets chirped in the background a light cooling breeze helping to cool her off from the days sun that had beat down upon the dark patches of fur. Her mind tumbling with scenarios and thoughts. How would she deal being alone? She was three years old now, and she had yet to become a mother. Something in her after the heat she went through triggered a deep need to pass on her father's name. Perhaps, she needed to kick the thought out of her mind. She could think about it next time she goes into heat. Hopefully, her mate would stick around, she might not control herself better next time. She had become so close to...

Adonia stood abruptly and shook her pelt, her eyes looking up to the heavens. She needed to go to bed. She would talk to Ookami in the morning about her needs. He needed to be around more, and he needed to show her he was a good mate, and not just want to be and say he's going to be. She wanted him to be the father of her offspring, but if he couldn't fulfill her needs she would have to hunt for a mate.

Tharin had just come back from a hunting trip. He tended to keep odd hours, rising at dawn, running under the light of the moon, occasionally showing up at high moon to ask if someone would go hunting with him. Neither moon or sun told him when he was supposed to be awake, sleeping whenever he got too tired and pushing himself to keep the nightmares at bay. He moved down to the beach, walking along and listening to the waves. It was a familiar sound, calming the restless wolf.

Smelling a pack mate up ahead Tharin let loose a short howl, welcoming her to come and join him. When she came into sight Tharin slowed down. Adonia. That was not good. The last time they had met Tharin had almost ended up mating with her, despite knowing that she had a mate already. He wasn't really too sure how to explain that, or how to even begin apologizing. Reaching her side Tharin looked up at the glittering stars. Nice night. His voice was quiet, partially embarrassed.

Her ears lifted with intent hearing a howl beckoning to be joined. She sat, though, wanting to see the canine come closer...it was Tharin. Her eyes watched him as he approached more, she remained still. He came to her side almost awkwardly and then spoke in an embarrassed tone. Her ears swiveled back, then went flat, "..yeah, it is.." Her voice soft and almost a whisper as if she'd wake other souls that dwell around the area. Of course, she knew there typically was not. Most of the other pack members were fast asleep, and if not, they didn't come up to this area often. She tilted her head, turning it toward him a little. She licked at her lips nervously. Even when she wasn't in heat, something about Tharin made her feel like...she couldn't figure it out. It was something that made her heart pound with a heavy feeling, like she couldn't catch her breath. This wasn't her heat...she was no longer in heat. Was it the memory of that day that caused this feeling.

She felt her cheeks burning as she looked away and flickered her ears up and forward, trying to pretend nothing bothered her. "Tharin.." she began, this time not whispering, "...um," She wanted to say sorry for that day, to say she shouldn't have continued their interactions, but she decided to gloss over it by speaking of her mate. "..Ookami is back..I found him. He was out hunting, and didn't tell me. He is badly wounded. I found him near the borders passed out. Deuce has given me a few remedies to help him." She spoke in a slightly matter-of-fact tone. She let out a heavy sigh. Her eyes glanced over to him, maybe she could confine in him..maybe they could be friends despite what happened.

Adonia knew that it would probably be hard to befriend a male. It was complicated, things could develop, but they might have already...

They both sat there awkwardly, silence filling between them. Adonia's reply had been quiet, as soft as her nature had proven to be. He looked over at the waves that continued to break, moving on as if the two wolves weren't there, struggling to deal with the other. What he had done was wrong, and he couldn't think of how to fix it at all. He knew that it was wrong, her embarrassment clear at her flattened ears. She must have been horrified, wandering around with his scent pasted to her. Why had he done that? Why couldn't he have just controlled himself?

His ears turned to face her as she called his name. He didn't look at her, afraid of what would happen if he did. Her words sent a mixture of anger and relief through him. Her mate was back, he could keep Tharin away from Adonia. He could act how a mate was meant to. At the same time, how could he get himself so foolishly injured? Ookami should have taken a pack mate along with him to prevent such a thing from happening. That's good. His words were almost a growl, Tharin cutting himself off and standing up, walking towards the water to cool himself off in it.

Her eyes noticing how he was being so tense, but so was she. Things were awkward, she had the urge to playfully nip him, but would play cause him excitement, or was that just because of...

She licked her lips, again, nervously. He spoke, and something in his tone said he wasn't happy with her mate returning, or was it because he had hurt himself? Before she could say anything-as if she even had anything to say, which she didn't-he got up and went to the waves. Her ears lifted high on her head as she watched him with curious eyes. Her gaze lowered for a moment. This was harder than she imagined. Really, it was awkward being around the pack branded as Tharin's, but it had wore off some before Ookami came back, still...Ookami hadn't said anything about her scent. Her heat, or the fact that another male's scent was in her pelt. She no longer smelled of Tharin, Ookami's scent was lightly mingled in her fur, but it wasn't nearly as strong as Tharin's was the day they had almost...

Adonia stood and trotted down to the water and a sudden idea came to her mind and she nearly pounced around, frolicking toward Tharin. A large smile plastered on her as she pounced into the saltwater, splashing around aiming to splash Tharin. She giggled lightly. The wolfdog hoped to lighten the atmosphere and hopefully get Tharin to relax. Nothing happened, so why should they worry about it? He didn't mate with her, and she wasn't disloyal to her mate. Almost, yes...but it did or didn't...there is no almost.

The water lapped at his feet, moving up to crash over the shore. It was cold, lending him it's relentless strength. He wouldn't be playing the fool and doing something stupid. Adonia had a mate, and he would find the words to apologize for almost losing control. It should have never happened. He was supposed to be a responsible pack member, not some scoundrel running around working on stealing away someone else's mate.

Water splashed up, bringing a surprised yelp from the wolf. Looking over he gazed at Adonia, standing there with her tail wagging. His eyes blinked in surprise before realizing that she'd been the one to get him. Growling playfully he bowed down, tail wagging. Bouncing he sent water splashing back at her, chuckling deeply. This was much easier. She didn't hold it against him, and even if things were awkward, it was easy to forget with the playful atmosphere, turning and running a short distance before turning around, prepared to splash her when she came close.

Her eyes watched him, ears perked hearing the surprised yelp. She giggled, "Chicken.." she teased, her eyes playfully glimmering. He pounced at her, splashing her, the cold water washing over her coat. Again she was soaked. He took off some ways down the beach front and she bounded after him tail slightly raising, but not in a way that would be disrespectful, just raised in a natural relaxed way. He splashed her again and she aimed to attempt a tackle. Laughing, her front paws raised coming at him to knock him into the water.

Adonia was pleased, she was successful in taking away the tension and the thoughts of the other day gone. The water rushed at both of them and the wave crashed into her making her fall over before her attack was successful. A growl of protest against nature came from her and she righted herself just as another wave came at her. The tide was rising as the moon reached it's peak. Adonia fought the waves finally gaining to her feet and coming back at Tharin determined to tackle him. She didn't know what she would do if successful in her attack, she just wanted to tackle him.

Adonia bounded over, rewarded with Tharin sending another cascade of cold water in her direction, growling happily. His tail wagged high above him, bold and happy. A wave crashed over them at that moment, chilling both wolves to the bone. Tharin shook himself, water spraying out from his thick coat. He growled lightly, licking the salty taste from around his muzzle. He should have known that he'd get hit!

He laughed again as Adonia stood up, knocked over by the wave. Tharin moved closer, checking to make sure that she was alright as another one began to raise up. Moving Tharin positioned himself to block the worst of the waves from Adonia, the smaller wolf struggling against the water. He growled as she leaped forwards in a tackle, hitting him full throttle. He twisted around, almost dancing with her back into the sand, shifting as he worked on throwing her down.

He was so kind to block the wave, but she couldn't help but take advantage of his kindness and attack. He twisted and turned offsetting her attack, her stubborn side not letting up, coming at him until he danced her to the shore. He gained the upper paw and was not position above her, pushing at her side. His bulk and her attempt to move causing her balance to falter and she fell. Her soaked pelt becoming riddled with sand, her lips lifted, neck turned so she could nip lightly at his legs as he pinned her down on her side with his bulk. She was fairly silent as he growled, it was playful, and she knew that. Adonia was just a silent player.

Her back legs lifted up to paw at him, she was also gentle in her playful attacks. She knew she probably didn't need to be easy, but it wasn't often Adonia play fought. How they got to this, she didn't know, but it was fun. Last time she ever play fought was with her brother, over two years ago. She missed it, and it was nice to get to again. In a way, this was making her enjoy Tharin's company again...and she was beginning to feel completely at ease around him. It was a good choice of fun, and a way to relax.

A soft whimper growl of protest came from her as she struggled to gain the upper hand again. Her body squirming beneath him, gnashing at his legs testing how rough she could be with him as memories of her and her brother's rough housing came back to her.

The smaller wolf fell to the ground, sand mixing with the wet fur. His tail wagged furiously as he moved, paws positioned over her. She was pinned to the ground beneath him. He reached down, teeth nipping at her face and scruff playfully. Teeth came to pull at his legs, short pulls at his flesh bringing another growl out from his throat. His nose pushed into her neck, more weight thrown in to stop her from moving around.

Back legs kicked against his stomach. Tharin moved, teeth snapping playfully at the source of the kicks, head rearing out of the way to avoid being hit. The whine brought a soft chuff from him, shaking his head as he grabbed her scruff, teeth snapping at his legs. Tharin leaped back, tail wagging as he watched her. The large male quickly charged in again, ready to grab her and pull her down to the ground once more.

The large male had her by the scruff, released to nip at her face, then her scruff. His paws had her to the ground not allowing her to easily get up, his nips reinforcing his position over her. Her lips lifted showing her teeth as her eyes worked to watch him. It was all play, but she loved to make it seem realistic. It made it all that more exciting. Her opponent let her up, and she pushed off the ground, trying to shake off the sand that clung to her fur. Luckily, her dense undercoat hadn't been penetrated by the saltwater too much, leaving her skin dry, and the density of the undercoat didn't allow any gritty sand to get past the top coat.

As she shook off, she made her way toward him, only to be knocked into. Her toes curled into the sand and her body lowered to embrace the impact, not knocking her down. She curled her neck beneath his and her muzzle pointed upward, teeth bared, she snapped playfully, and lightly at the bottom part of his neck where he was most vulnerable. She aimed to grip him under his neck, pulling any loose skin.

Adonia bounded over towards Tharin, her blue eyes glittering happily. His tail wagged behind him, clearing the small distance between them easily with his large size. Meeting her he pushed down, growling softly as he hit against her. Adonia was stronger than she'd surmised though, standing against him. Tharin didn't push harder, knowing that could easily push it from play to an actual fight, even if neither meant it to, instincts driving to fight back. Instead he bumped her again, trying to see if it worked if he did it again, perhaps catching her off guard.

He was the one to be surprised. Tharin lifted his head up as Adonia nipped at the soft exposed flesh along his neck. His tail wagged behind him, dancing around as she secured a grip there. As soon as that was done Tharin grew still, tail lashing wildly behind him. A whining growl came out, pleading and demanding with it's playful joy. He was caught pretty well, and didn't know if he could pull free without tearing. It was better to let Adonia let go so he could tackle her afterwards, showering her with licks to the face. If she did let go.

She had him and she gripped hard enough that she could pull back a little a thrash gently showing him just how ferocious she could be. It wasn't enough to cause him any real pain, unless he chose to fight her grip. He didn't, he was still for a moment, his tail going in and out of view. He wanted her to release her grip, and she suddenly felt powerful. She stood fully, her neck and head in an awkward position to maintain her grip. His pleas and demand made her tail wag, and with one growl of dominance coming from her she let go, only to be showered with licks. It made her blush as she realized she suddenly had a power thrill from being the one to call the shots. She could have kept her grip, she could have done something awful being in a position of power. Luckily, Adonia wasn't that kind of canine. She wouldn't hurt another, even when pushed, words were her route, usually.

Adonia giggled at his licks and she, not thinking, rubbed her muzzle along Tharin's. Her tail wagging lightly as her body felt something she hadn't felt in a while. Something, only Ookami had sparked in her. A light whimper came from her, then she backed away lightly, her cheeks feeling warm. The wolfdog was embarrassed by showing him affection as she did. She was mated, and Ookami was back, he was injured and here she was playing, and showing another affection. Adonia didn't say anything, just sat down, with a light smile on her face, hiding her thoughts. In a way, she wondered, if she wasn't mated, would she have even allowed Tharin to do the act? Probably not, she wasn't that kind of wolf, she certainly would have allowed him to court her though...

She stood abruptly and shook her wet pelt off, trying to clear the sand and her head.

Giggles met his boisterous licks. They renewed in strength, the wolf stepping to almost push her back under onslaught of his tongue, far too friendly to be taken seriously. His tail wagged nonstop, glad to play with her and let his bad manners be forgotten in such a way. The light brush of her muzzle along his was only met with an endearing one of his own, placing himself above her with all the protectiveness a stronger wolf could offer. Sure, he wasn't a warrior, but Tharin could fight, if not as well as he'd like.

A heat rose from her face as she pulled away. What was that? Tharin stared with bewilderment, an uninfected wolf incapable of blushing in such a manner. Whining he stuck his head forward, sniffing at her. Embarrassed, but what had made her face heat like that? Stepping back Tharin laid down, content with just letting the night wash over them. He was surprised by her abrupt movements, a half growl half bark coming out. Adonia?

She glanced over at the sound of her name, her eyes met with his briefly before she gave a light smile. She knew it was her behavior he was wondering about, but she didn't want to make it a big deal, so she simply smiled and asked in a light tone, "..what?" Her eyes sparkled softly and she tilted her head to the right, ears perked in a playful manner. Sitting down she waited before sliding down into a laying position. It was time to relax and just enjoy the moon, stars, and the sound of the ocean. It was peaceful, and for a moment she wondered if she'd be able to share a night like this with Ookami. It would be nice to forget he'd left her twice without notice, just to think about the good times, and possibly having a future with her mate as it was meant to be. Did any mateship go as thought?

Her eyes looked from the ocean to the moon. The wolfdog's mind wondered to what could be, to what should be...and to what was.

Her bright blue eyes met his warm amber ones. The gaze communicated a little more than what he'd known before, a longing that was quickly covered up. Longing for what, he didn't know. More nights on the beach? Another game? Was she hungry? Did she want to go back to her mate? Anger struck him at the last one, quickly shoved aside. It was none of his business that her mate had vanished without warning and gotten himself hurt. Pack or not, he hadn't exactly interacted with the others.

Her playful brush off made him think that it was simply that she was enjoying the time, not wanting it to end. Shaking his head he looked up at the moon. Nothing. There was nothing to concern himself with. Sighing he tucked his head down, gazing at her for a moment before closing his eyes, just listening to what was around them.

Adonia was torn, it was true. She had so many interested in her while Ookami was gone, but really, it all had to be because of her heat and nothing more. Luckily it was over, and now she could just enjoy things more without the pressure or worry. To say the truth though, she wasn't sure what she wanted. The more she thought about it, the more she was confused and torn. Her eyes moved from the moon and stars, to Tharin. His eyes were closed, and he looked so peaceful. A small smile spread over her muzzle and she crawled over to him, she wanted so much. She wanted to lick his muzzle, and to snuggle up to him. Why though? Was she just wanting the affection? The attention? Was it more? Adonia didn't know...but...what harm would it cause to do what she wanted to do?

She swallowed and did something she feared doing. Shuffling her body, she pressed herself up to him, maybe she would regret this, but until then she wanted to, she wanted to be close to him right now. Her muzzle came to his and she pushed it to be beneath his muzzle. She wouldn't lick him, but she would certainly allow herself to cuddle up close to him. Would it really be so bad? Would she really regret it? So much swam through her mind, she tried to shove it away and allow herself to figure out what it was all about...and maybe just enjoy the feeling of having Tharin so close..if he didn't mind...

His ears twitched, listening as Adonia moved closer. Tharin was tempted to open his eyes, but something told him it was better to wait. The hybrid was hiding something, Tharin knew that. An uneasiness. Perhaps if it looked like he wasn't waiting to learn what it was she would let something slip. His tail thumped behind him before falling still, letting her move closer. She wasn't touching him, but was still very close, making him all too aware of the fact that she had come out of heat far too recently, the memory still fresh in his mind, his shame.

Her body pressed into his, a comforting warmth. Happily Tharin lifted his head, looking over her. Being with his pack mates always brought him joy. Lowering his head Tharin licked at her ears before resting down again, looking out to the ocean. All that secretive fuss for something he would have done happily. He didn't mind cuddling with her. In fact, he was rather enjoying it, just letting her be close.

She had managed to lay pressed up beside Tharin, and he lifted his head, hers lifted slightly off the ground, eyes looked up softly to him. She remained quiet, almost embarrassed, knowing if Ookami was able to come this way, this would surely not look good. Still, it wasn't like she was cheating...she wasn't doing anything more than cuddling. Tharin moved his head to lick at her ears, and they flicked back, a soft smile on her muzzle, her head moved to press beneath his neck before he moved to lay his head back down. Her muzzle laid next to his. She was really liking this. It was peaceful. Adonia's tail wagged lightly, and she let her eyes close, the sound of the ocean filled them, the soft breeze coming toward them blowing her fur a little.

So relaxed and letting her head clear, she found herself slowly nodding off into dream land, her tail moved toward Tharin, and touched his tail. Their tails overlapping as she fell asleep beside him.
