Zeitgeist sat next to the river and stared contemplatively into the flowing water. For once Guillotine and Ptolemy, the boy and the bird he traveled with respectively, weren't to be seen hovering near him. That didn't mean the they weren't around though. No, Z had tucked the pup and avian creature into bed to take a nap. Zeitgeist had made certain that the cabin in which he had left the duo to rest was far enough away from the river to prevent wash out while still close enough for him to be able to keep an ear on what was going on and allow for him to get there quickly should there be trouble.

Zeitgeist pulled a large metal coin from the pocket of his vest. He easily threaded the coin through his fingers, walking it across his knuckles. It was simply something to so while he let his mind wander. He had been spending his time teaching Guillotine everything that he knew in the amount of time that they had left together but there were just some lessons that couldn't be delivered. The boy couldn't speak so how could Z teach hi, just what it was that the older male excelled at? The boy couldn't spark up a conversation which often left it seeming as if Z was talking to himself. Zeitgeist had got the African Grey in hopes of alleviating that but while the bird could talk it didn't keep up conversation either.

Zeitgeist glanced back over his shoulder, off towards the cabin in which Guillotine and Ptolemy were, as he thought he heard something. But seeing nothing the male focused on the moving water once more. Z had to wonder if it had been such a good idea to leave Europe or not. All of this quiet open space bored the older male but he had no idea if his charge might be enjoying it at least. Even so there hadn't been anything back in England left for Zeitgeist. The lack of bustle was definitely something to get used to.

  • Time to herself was a comfort the she-wolf could never grow tired of. Though she loved her Family and did everything within her power to keep them happy and secure, these treasured times of peace were what she longed for, as brief and fleeting as they were. So when there was downtime in her day to stretch her legs for another reason other than patrol or a hunt, she took it graciously however aimless her path may have been.

As always, she was lured to the river, eager to wet her parched tongue and lounge til duty called her from her reprieve. The scents of the valley were still strange to her, but the differentiation of flora and the Earthbound souls were easy enough to notice. She caught the faint scent of such a living being near the river but thought better than to seek it without caution. This was to be her moment of rest, not a possible lead into confrontation. However she would have done well to make herself known in the hopes this distant body would do the same, less the scent she caught was just a renmannt of its presence and the body had long since gone. Soundly she raised her voice in a short call then continued on toward the expansive river's edge.

Zeitgeist was uncertain of where to head to next. He didn't know the area but that had never particularly bothered him in his travels before. But then again all times before he had always been surrounded by commotion. Such wasn't happening this time. He wasn't at all used to how quiet the nights in this area was. After all he was in the middle of wilderness now rather than the structures of buildings. It was just a bit unsettling, especially since he had another to look after now. How far could he force Guillotine to walk before they found some semblance of what it was that they had left behind? He had no idea but he was growing concerned with dragging the young male all over.

An ear twitched when he heard the sound of another. Zeitgeist stiffened momentarily at the sound of the call. He considered rousing Guillotine but found himself unwilling to do so. The boy could really use this rest and Zeitgeist wasn't about to deprive him of it. Instead Zeitgeist relaxed once more and sent up his own call, the bayful sound that only a hound could make. After his return had cut off Zeitgeist peered around the area, checking all around to keep watch for this canine whom had chosen to announce their presence before it could even be seen.

Z was pretty much willing to do whatever it took in order to allow for Guillotine to get as much rest as he possibly could. Zeitgeist was pretty much used to constantly being on the move but he couldn't say for certain if the same could be said for the younger and smaller male that followed along with him. In truth he knew nothing about his charge for Guillotine wasn't one to speak about himself, or even speak about anything at all. Ever. Guillotine proved to be a silent companion despite Zeitgeist's early attempts at trying to draw the boy into conversation.

Zeitgeist brought his attention back from looking off at the cabin once again when he realized that there was another at the river with him. "Ciao Signora. Twas it your voice I caught by chance?" The Italian accent laced his words as it had been doing as of late. But then again it was pretty much standard for him to fall into the habit of tossing about Italian words amidst his English. He had spent most of his life living in Italy before he had moved to England and well, now he found himself here in Canada. While he could mimic the accents that he heard Italian was his natural one as well as the one that was most frequently used, especially around women as he found that most women seemed to enjoy the accent.

Her acknowledging call was met with one in turn but with a tone that pulled her ears forward in surprise at the uniquely defined bray of something other than wolf. It was a sound she knew all too well, for it was with her adoptive brood that she heard such tones as well weighing down the reaching octaves of a true wolf’s call.

A dog? She inquired with the utmost care even to herself as she pondered the inevitability of an encounter. When last she had crossed path with a dog, she did not leave unscathed and her impression henceforth laid by that ambitious bitch left her forever apprehensive about crossing their kind again. Would this be another ill placed attempt at showing prowess for a particular skill? Or was she embarrassing herself by making more of the situation than she should have? Afterall, wasn’t it her voice that led to this coming encounter? And in the spirit of being cautious, no less. To expect something other than curiosity, perhaps even defense was foolish on her part and in reprimand, the woman lowered her autumn crown and shook it vigorously as if to rid it of those ignorant thoughts. But her impressions clung on, clouding her otherwise brilliant gaze as she lifted her head and was met by the unnamed dog.

Again she was caught off guard by the male, this time by the heavily accent of his voice. His address to her was unknown and misunderstood, but she did well to maintain a calm and patient air. With a hunter’s gaze, she once observed his frame, reading the language of his exterior, the ‘sense’ that emanated from his (surprisingly) polite form as he inquired about her song. “It was,” she answered softly, though void of the melodious trill that often accented her voice. She was taken whole by caution. Even her hackles remained raised beneath her overflowing mane. But with a low, careful tone, she carried on. “Do you reside here?”

Zeitgeist hadn't the knowledge of any grievances among species. He had met about every form of canine that there was to see and he hadn't detected any sort of prejudices. Well no, there were prejudices but generally against a select few and not a whole species. There were always bad seeds to be found no matter the species. So he found no reason to begrudge someone just because they were of a certain species. He found such to be quite silly. There wasn't a single one that had control over the flesh that they were born into. It was through council that he had come to terms hat pining for one gender or another was something else that was born into and couldn't be changed.

Z offered up a slight smile and a nod of his head as his question had been affirmed. Though when a question was tossed his way the male found himself glancing back at the cabin once more before directing his gaze back to the female once more. "Ah no, Signora. I'm afraid I've no place that I reside as I'm an ocean away from the last place that I called home. We just stopped because the boy needed a rest. He isn't as well traveled as I am." The male spoke freely but then he hardly had any trouble speaking about Zeitgeist, Remi was another story entirely.

"Scusa, I've nothing to offer a weary traveler. Though I imagine these residences to be uninhabitated as none have come to rouse us and send us on our way so I would garner a bet that if you are looking for a place to rest then here is as good as any other." Zeitgeist glanced down to his fingers after he finished speaking, suddenly remembering the weight of the coin against them. Now that there was company for the moment he tucked the coin back into his pocket as he had only been playing with it to mildly entertain himself. It was also a distraction from the morose thoughts that seemed to overtake him whenever he sat still for long periods of time with nothing else for him to focus on.

The scent of a dog was not one she had gotten used to here. A bit of it clung to the young duo’s coats that she cared for, but being around her and drenched in her scent, they smelled more wolf than with any inkling to their other genetic trait. A status of circumstance, nothing more. So as she breathed in with the male’s scent filtering into her nostrils, her acute receptor wiggled and sniffed now and again until the scent became more familiar with every breath and her measured inhales resumed to normal.

When he spoke of another she followed his gaze to the cabin and her nose produced a wiggle of a different kind; one of disdain for the human structure, too sharp and angled for her liking. Though the earth attempted to claim the structure for itself, it still lacked the natural organic form that appealed to her eyes, and rather than a victim of Nature’s overtaking, it stuck out of the foliage as a defiant beacon. She had to look away before her disgust of the thing betrayed her…

“Ocean?” she inquired off-handed until the interest at last raised her brows. She was familiar intimately with a lake and the sea, but ocean? She had heard of it, but never pondered what its distance was like. It ‘felt’ like quite a ways… but who truly knew but those that had seen this distance for themselves? But just as quickly her curiosity was reformed into an assuring, albeit small, smile as he referred to the lodgings. “Oh no…” she shook her head before gesturing with her muzzle to the path from whence she came. “I live with my Family under the shadow of the mountain. Those kinds of dwellings-“ she flicked her muzzle to the cabin “-are unnatural and strange to me. Our homes are made of what the earth provides…”

Zeitgeist nodded his head as he was questioned. "Yes. The large body of water that separates this side of the world from the one that I came from. It took months to get across it." Quite treacherous it was as more than one life was lost during the course of the trip. There had been changes of course as well as emergency dockings. Crew members had fallen ill at one point and needed to be replaced. Not to mention that out in the midst of the water with no land in sight had a passenger fallen into the water and became gulped up by some creature that swam about out there. The trip hadn't been a pleasant one in the slightest and made him glad for land once again.

Of course the novelty of being on land was wearing off as he found this place nothing like what he was used to. Even though he saw the same faces over and over again upon the boat he still at least bumped into them often and always had someone to converse with. It was nothing like that here where it took days of travel to find even a single other canine to speak with.

"How is that so?" Zeitgeist found himself inspecting the structure in which Guillotine was contained. "Does not the earth provide both rock and wood?" And that is what he saw when he looked at the lodgings. He seen what they were made from and seemed to be built of what could be found in the area around them. To him it seemed unnatural to live anywhere else. Why wouldn't you want a roof over your head when the storms came?

Only minutely could she wrap her head around the idea of a body of water so large it required such a length of time to cross. It would have been silly to assume this was down by the power of one's limbs alone, but surely some other method was used to accomplish these feat. None the less, it sounded fantastic to a mind used and comfortable with the solid ground beneath her paws. Already, she fancied this male as a wanderer of a different kind, by means which she could not yet fathom.

But as he spoke of the shelter provided in a way by the earth, the wonder that touched her brows darkened to a mild disdain for his contest. True that the shelter was fashioned by the wood and dirt of the earth, she could not perceive it as a 'natural' occurrence in her eyes, knowing that it was not by the paws of their brethren that built it. Anxiously the she-wolf shuffled in place, placing one paw forward with uncertainly then just as unsurely stepping back again. Always did she feel disease in the presence of these relics. Why one would voluntarily reside there was beyond her...

"True they are a part of the earth," gathering her nerves she continued on just as smooth and calmly as before. "But how they are arranged is not settling to me. One need only push aside the dirt to make a home. Perhaps line the stones around the home to make a barrier if need be. But to cut the wood or stone so that it fits in a particular way... I do not see the reason for that kind of manipulation."

While the trip here had been the longest one that he had taken across the water that wasn't to say that it was his first. His other trips had been shorter ones. So traveling over the water didn't bother him in the slightest. Actually he quite enjoyed the ability to travel to vast places. After all there was no telling how long he intended on staying in the area before he would get that itch to travel once again. After all he didn't plan his trips but just left whenever he felt the time was right and headed to wherever he could get passage to go.

He simply didn't understand what she had meant as he found nothing at all unnatural about the structure. In truth it was smaller and more quaint than some of the other places that he had seen. He had seen the remain of buildings that still managed to tower way beyond one's head. That wasn't to say that these buildings could be lived in but they were still there. This was simply much smaller than what he was used to surrounding him. Also it was made of far less stone than he was used to as well.

"So that you aren't sleeping in the dirt." He answered simply, offering up an explanation as he figured that she truly wanted to know the reason behind it. "To sleep in the dirt you would spend most of your time trying to clean yourself to look presentable as no one really thinks much of someone covered in filth. To put a barrier between you and the dirt you don't have to spend as much time grooming." To him the reason for those structures were really that simple. And well, it also prevented against living like a savage. "They aren't for just a single individual to reside in but large enough to fit an entire family easily." Even his mom and dad and their twelve children would have been able to settle into the structure with relative ease. While rooms would separate them it still allowed them to remain together quite easily rather than everyone digging their own dirt hole as it seemed this female was suggesting should be done.

    ooc:

Dirt and grime was a consequence of living wild, she would argue. One that she was proud to exhibit so long as her confidence in her own abilities remained. If structures of this like were only meant to serve to keep one from being dirty, then it was more impractical than she had once believed.

Whatever retort she had thought to provide was silenced as the canine continued on about the benefits to these structures. There was little she could offer in argument, or cared to give at this point as she came to a full understanding that their perceptions of living arrangements clearly differed. If the dog wished for the comforts of the human remnant rather than take the pride and consequences of what was made by his own paws, then he was within his own right to do so. For who was she to contest how one chose to live?

With a sound sigh, she declared her forfeit in this spontaneous debate and chose instead to tread down a line of conversation that she was confident would result in significantly less of a headache. Again with a turn of her muzzle toward the mountain, she began once more carrying the same placid tones. “As I have mentioned, I reside with my Family on the mountain. However the land between has many scattered reserves with food. Should you come across one, you are welcome to help yourself to the meat.” Humbly, she lowered her head. “As once a traveler myself, I understand how difficult it is to come across food when game may be scarce. You are welcome to replenish the strength of you and yours while you are here…”

After their differing views, combined with her seeming wariness previously, he was quite surprised by her offer. He bowed his head graciously at the prospect. "Grazie, thank you for your generous offer. Most certainly I can't take from you or your family without some form of repayment. Name whatever it is that your heart desires and I will see if I can't end up obtaining it." While the dog had no problem stealing from the unwitting he simply couldn't find himself to treat someone who offered what they had the same way. No, he found that he had to meet offers with repayment. Back overseas he didn't often have to worry about this. There weren't many there that he found willing to share. But over on this side of the ocean he found himself promising repayment quite often. He didn't know what it was with those on this side of the world that made them willing to part with what they had or whatever services could be provided.

Zeitgeist lifted his head slowly in order to look at the female once more, taking the time to actually study her. "You are correct, food has been hard to find. It is not obtained here in the same fashion that I am used to. Survival is quite different on this side of the world. I admit I must brush up on some neglected skills if I am determined to stay on in this side of the world." Right now food was definitely among the top of possessions that Zeitgeist could think of acquiring. A cache somewhere would be quite nice. But then he hadn't even thought of settling in a particular area just yet. Instead he simply found himself resting wherever he was whenever he got too tired to continue on for the day. Or well it was actually when Guillotine found himself unable to continue would they stop so that the boy could rest.

The dog turned his head back towards the cabin as he heard the sounds of frantic movement scurrying about inside. He gave a short, sharp bark in order to alert the boy of his whereabouts. "Seems that he is awake now and I may have to take you up on your offer sooner than I had previously expected. I assure you that I would only ever take enough to feed the boy. I can pick over the remains of whatever carcass I come across." Even though he was speaking to the woman the dog still found himself staring at the cabin. He was waiting for the door to open and to watch Guillotine emerge from it in order to make certain that all was fine. Zeitgeist didn't relax the tenseness that had suddenly overcame him at the sound of movement in the cabin until Guillotine had exited and made his way to be at Zeitgeist's side once more.

Z slipped his arm around Guillotine and held the boy close to him. He gave the smaller male a brief, yet affectionate, nuzzle before focusing on the female once more. "Guillotine, this is... Pardon me, it appears that I had forgotten to acquire your name earlier." They had been so caught up in the talk of other things Zeitgeist didn't realize that he hadn't a name with which to refer to the female until that moment. "Oh, and this would be Ptolemy." Zeitgeist motioned to the bird that Guillotine had carried over in his hands. "And I'm Zeitgeist."

And if you're ever around, in the city or the suburbs, of this town,
Be sure to come around, I'll be wallowing in sorrow, wearing a frown,
    like pierrot the clown.
