One Sunny Morning

Dawn was just starting to shine over the horizon. Slowly light sneaked across the wooden floor, moving to where the heap of siblings slept. They were more spread out than they used to be, as some tended to move around a lot in their sleep, and with the larger sizes it was more comfortable spaced out. Sun touched upon the black female's back, slowly warming her body. It was a tickling sensation, heat spreading through her. Restlessly the pup shifted around, working to find a more comfortable position as the tingle spread.

Stretching seemed the only way to solve it. Pushing her paws out Dalgina felt herself hit her limit. Pushing just a little bit further limbs lengthened. Fur became thick, covering her body as she swelled into her secui form. Jaws yawned as sharp teeth poked through, tongue lolling out. Large padded paws curled into her body, and Dalgina rolled over. Stretched out she was much more comfortable, and fell back into a deeper sleep. It was nice and warm now. The sun prodded the pup again, streaks of pink and red running into the room.

The need to stretch again ran through her. Further asleep than the first time it took a while before the wolf uncurled from her position, large fluffy tail removing to reveal a wet black nose. Stretching out limbs changed again. At first it was rather like a stretch, pushing her limbs out as far as they could go. It didn't stop there though, Dalgina starting to wake up as the shift became more complex, muscles rearranging as bones rotated. Thick black hair came down from her head, brushing down her face. Tickled by it's presence she sleepily sat up,wriggling her toes as they changed into fingers.

It was as her feet folded up neatly beneath her, fully lengthened and ready for her to stand on, small breasts on her chest now with hips that hadn't fully existed in lupine form appearing that she finally woke up. Brown eyes peered around sleepily, wondering what had woken up. Smiling at the sight of the sun coming forwards to greet her Dalgina stretched her arms up. Realizing that she had done something new she blinked. Lowering her arms Dalgina stared. That wasn't normal. There was a thick black curtain in her face too.

Pushing it back she straightened further up. The black curtain just fell forwards again. Realizing it was her hair Dalgina let out a quiet giggle. It looked like she'd done it. The pup had finally shifted. Gathering her legs up Dalgina carefully pushed herself up. Slow steps were made over to the window. Breathing in the fresh air she looked around, smiling to herself. Tail wagging she looked up at the sky, so much closer to her than before.

Walking down the stairs with a soft step, afraid that at any moment the spell would break and she'd be on four legs again Dalgina stepped in. Everything felt so amazing, different. Wind brushed against her, letting Dalgina look out to the plants, feeling the grass between her toes. It was amazing.

Talk! Think! Walk!

After several weeks of care and intensive watch on Fawkes's part, it was Hotaru's turn to take on the majority of responsibility for the tiny white falcon. Kelia had been out of the egg for over a week and had been growing steadily since. She demanded food almost constantly and thus made Hotaru's job a lot harder. Fawkes, who had cared for the egg for nearly a month, had been rewarded with a tiny follower. The white falcon chick practically worshiped her older hawk companion and had started out actually disliking Hotaru. The chick's attitude had slowly changed as Hotaru was its main meal provider. However, the reward was less than thrilling for the blind wolf and she had resigned herself to the possibility that she would never share a deep connection with Kelia like she did with Fawkes.

The blind female had just returned from yet another hunt. In one hand she held a dead rabbit, in the other she held her walking stick and waved it in front of her in her usual fashion. Hotaru moved at a leisurely pace, she was in no rush to return home. The peaceful atmosphere and warm air made her feel lethargic. She had a great desire to simply lie down in the shade and take a wonderful nap. She even had a desire to read, despite the fact that the task was impossible. Sensitive ears twitched as the sound of her staff changed into the distinct ring of concrete. She had entered the outskirts of Thornburry and the desire for a nap intensified.

Hotaru paused and raised her muzzled slightly. The soft wind carried Dalgina's scent towards the blind female. She though about it, and decided that it would be a perfect opportunity for the puppy to learn a few things about raising a bird. With her mind sent, she followed the scent until it grew stronger and the sound of soft footsteps could be heard. "Dalgina!" Hotaru's cry was relaxed, and contained no hint of necessity. It was a friendly call to the youngster whom she had come to know.

Dalgina turned as her voice was called. Her hair promptly tangled up, blocking her line of sight. Delicate fingers reached up, untangling the black mane so that it was out of her face, letting her bright brown eyes look over. There was Taru, walking towards her. Her tail wagged, excited that she had someone to share what had happened with. Dalgina was a little unsure if this was real still, moving as if she was in a dream. She crossed the distance over, smiling happily.

Taru. I shifted. She smiled shyly, hoping that the blind wolf would be just as excited as she was. Taru couldn't see the change, unfortunately, so Dalgina didn't really have anyone to ask about what she looked like. That was fine. Dalgina could find some water to look into later. Glancing down at the rabbit Dalgina took in the delicious scent. Her stomach kicked in with a growl, demanding that it be fed, despite how early it was. Embarrassed Dalgina ducked away. Guess I need to get something to eat. Pausing Dalgina realized she had no idea how to hunt in this form.

As Hotaru walked towards Dalgina, she noticed something off about the young female. Mostly, that her steps were wrong. Dalgina's footsteps sounded off, and she reached Hotaru too quickly. The older female's mind realed as she anticipated what the younger female would say. Excitement built up in Hotaru's chest, her tail twitched as she eagerly awaited the other's words.

Dalgina had shifted! The puppy had crossed the line between the unshifted and those gifted with the power of the virus. Hotaru smiled broadly and her tail wagged happily behind her. For once, the blind female didn't hold her emotions back and let them flow through her. "Dalgina that's wonderful! What exciting news." The grey female closed the gap between herself and Dalgina. She tucked her staff under her other arm and went to place her free paw on the puppy's shoulder. "You have become a fine female."

Red ears twitched as a hungry growl erupted from the younger female's stomach. Hotaru chuckled a bit and stepped back so that she could grab her staff. She put a little weight on the staff and stood in a relaxed manner. Hotaru's arm raised chest high and she smiled. "Shifting takes a lot of energy so I can imagine that you must be very hungry. Here, you need it most at the moment. I'm afraid that I can't teach you how to hunt in your new form, though. But, perhaps if you are interested in learning how to use a staff I could give you a quick lesson or two."

Her news brought joy from her friend, tail wagging rapidly. Feeding off the excitement Dalgina's own tail swayed behind her. It was so new, yet different. She could feel her tail brushing against her hair occasionally, long enough to fall all the way down. It wasn't as neat as Taru's, brushed back and short. No, hers was very tangled. Something that she would have to figure out. The distance between them closed as Taru reached out for her. A hand on her shoulder Dalgina grinned shyly at the words. A fine female. Dalgina hoped she was.

Embarrassed by the growl of the stomach Dalgina's ears fell flat, tail hanging a little lower. Shifting took energy? Dalgina wasn't too sure about that, having been asleep until the very end of her shift. It did make sense though. The rabbit was raised up, Dalgina checking to make sure that it was alright. The young girl accepted the rabbit happily, eating it with as little mess as she could achieve. It was easy to hold the rabbit in her hands, but blood still ran everywhere, painting her coat a bright red as she held it.

The juices flowed over her arms, something else for Dalgina to clean up. Asked if she wanted to learn how to use a staff the wolf barked before calming down again. The staff was important! Dalgina knew Taru used it as eyes, wondering if she could do the same. Yes please!

A luperci's first shift was a great milestone in their lives and a time to celebrate. The virus that had been created by humans had caused many canines to evolve and thus set them apart from those bound on four legs. It didn't necessarily make the luperci better than the uninfected; it simply gave the shifters an advantage. Hotaru remembered her first shift fondly. Her first shift had been in the middle of winter and thus allowed her to participate in her first snowball fight. There had been a feast a few days later to celebrate Hotaru's entrance into the luperci world. It was a very precious and happy memory for her, although she rarely thought about her past. The tragedy that hit her later in life had cast a shadow over her memories.

Dalgina was quick to accept Hotaru's gift and soon the smell of fresh blood filled the air. Once again, the blind female found herself wishing that her eyes had worked so that she could see Dalgina's new form. However, fate was not so kind and Hotaru had to accept that. She simply stood with her tail swinging slowly from side to side as Dalgina ate. "Dalgina, what has your mother or father told you about shifting?" There were many things young luperci needed to know about shifting and Hotaru believed that they should be taught to puppies immediately after they begin to shift lest they get themselves into trouble.

Before the loss of her birth pack, Hotaru had been trained in fighting with staves and spears. She believed that it was a valuable lesson for any young luperci to know. Learning the art of staves was especially important because they were an easy weapon to find and use. Dalgina sounded eager to learn about staves, although Hotaru wondered if she knew their uses. "A staff is an important tool, especially for me as you already know. However, your use for the staff will be a little different from mine." The older females hands cradled her wooden staff delicately. It's length was decorated with carvings, simple but elegant. Her staff was no weapon.

"Perhaps you should get used to your new body first. I'm sure Tehu has missed you and now that you have hands you can begin working with him as well. Which would you prefer to do Dalgina?"

Asked what she knew about shifting Dalgina slowed down. She licked at her jaws for a moment, thinking over what she knew. Shifting is only for luperci. You're born with it. Humans made it, and we have three forms. That was her bundle of knowledge in a nutshell. Dalgina kind of knew about how it took time to shift, and that each form granted a different set of skills with it, but they were half thoughts, more an instinctual understanding than something that anyone had bothered explaining to her. She didn't know what it was Taru felt she needed to know.

A different use? Maybe Dalgina couldn't use it like Taru did because she wasn't blind. To use a staff did one have to give up being able to see? Dalgina finished the rabbit, the blood and juices still on her body. She'd have to lick to clean that up later. Right now though, what they were doing was a lot more interesting than a bath. She had those all the time. Told that she could work with Tehu Dalgina's tail burst into a frenzy. She could finally hold him! I want to see Tehu. To finally bond with him properly, beyond the confines of four legs.

Hotaru waited patiently as Dalgina took her time to answer the question. Although the puppy knew a few things about shifting, she would have to learn more. "Correct. It is also important to remember that shifting takes time and energy. You can't go wild with your shifting, no matter how tempted you are. If you are badly injured, you must stay in one form until the injury is healed. Shifting will only make things worse." Hotaru continued on for a short while, explaining the advantages of each form and any other basic things that Dalgina would need to know as a newly shifted luperci.

The grey female's lesson wasn't long, but it was condensed with a lot of information. Even so, she expected Dalgina to understand and at least remember the most crucial parts. It wasn't like the young female was dumb and Hotaru expected a lot from her because she was sure that Dalgina could handle it. With her first lesson done it was time to move onto her next lesson: the care of raptors. Hotaru turned and led the way back to her house where Kelia, Tehu, and Fawkes were waiting for them. Fawkes greeted Hotaru as she entered the house, followed by a reluctant greeting from Kelia. The blind female offered her paw to Kelia who refused to do a tactile greeting. Fawkes on the other hand flew up to Hotaru's shoulder and nibbled on her ear.

The red-tailed hawk was happy to see Hotaru, even if she didn't bring any food back for them. He nibbled on her ear and spoke kind words in his low speech. He had forgiven Hotaru for picking up the white falcon chick. In fact, the tiny bird practically worshiped him and he adored the extra attention. Kelia flapped her immature wings pathetically and chirped because she couldn't join Fawkes on his perch.

Dalgina listened eagerly as Taru spoke. She absorbed the information, learning about what luperci could do with interest. It seemed there was much to their various forms. Secui Dalgina didn't see much use for, as she wasn't interested in fighting or the other things that it could be used for, choosing her lupine form for such things. She didn't want others to think she was being aggressive. Maybe Keldava would like to hear about that. Dalgina could tell her all about what she had learned and Keldava would be ready for when she shifted as well. Often she forgot that Keldava was younger than her, relying on her sister for the protection and comfort an older sibling would give.

Not all of it would be kept, perhaps only emerging when the situation rose. With so much knowledge Dalgina forgot some of the more obscure details, only holding onto the most relevant details that would effect her life. She trotted after Taru joyfully, eager to see Tehu. Entering the home Dalgina was surprised at Kelia's cold greeting towards Taru. Fawkes' words brought a small giggle from Dalgina before she whistled out, softly calling for Tehu. The kestrel moved, wings flapping as he glided across, still not fully capable of flight. Hitting the ground before her Tehu chirped happily, telling Taru how happy he was to see his special guest. Dalgina supposed he would think that, as she hadn't been able to care for him much before. Scooping him up Dalgina petted him softly under the chin. Eyes closed partly, craning his head to enjoy the new kind of affection.

Dalgina remained one step behind Hotaru as they moved through Thornbury. Instincts were a powerful thing and a large drive for the wolves. Dalinga used her instincts to get used to her new forms while Hotaru's put hers to good use for traveling and hunting in the dark. Once inside the house, the younger female signaled to Tehu who responded immediately to his owner's commands. However, the kestrel was still too young to fly and simply glided to the floor where he landed with a thump. The fledgeling chirped to the blind female in low speech, expressing his happiness about his "special guest" visiting him. Hotaru shook her head, figuring Dalgina would quickly set the birds mind right.

While Dalgina and Tehu were bonding, the grey wolf took the time to reaffirm her connection with Fawkes. She gently stroked his breast, his soft feather's bending slightly beneath the luperci's fingers. Kelia sat in her makeshift nest and grumbled in low speech. She wasn't happy that Fawkes was giving his attention to Hotaru. Once their greetings were done, Hotaru placed Fawkes on the dresser and removed from one of it's drawers some dried meat she kept for a rainy day.

The blind female turned and walked several paces away from the dresser before she stopped and did a 180 so that she faced Fawkes.

Once in place Hotaru put a tiny chunk of the meat into her left hand and raised her arm so that it was parallel to the ground. Pursing her lips, she let out a whistle similar to the one Dalgina used. Fawkes, who knew the drill, took flight and landed on her arm with only a few beats of his wings. The red-tailed hawk bent his great neck and gobbled down his treat. With a slight lift of her arm, Fawkes returned to the dresser where he was bombarded by questions from Kelia. Hotaru lowered her arm and turned her attention back to Dalgina. "Because Tehu is starting to fly, this is an exorcise that I suggest you do with him. Not only will it help strengthen his wings, but it will help him learn to respect your authority and follow your commands. Think of him like a lower ranking member of your pack. I suggest you start out close to him, and as he gets stronger you can gradually increase the distance till he is flying several yards."

Dalgina continued petting Tehu, murmuring to him the things she was thinking about. It was so easy to speak with him, low speech having rapidly become another language for her, alongside the arctic speech she still knew. It was even easier for Dalgina in some ways, as low speech communicated across ideas and images, rather similar to how Dalgina thought. Tehu chirped away, telling the black pup about Fawkes and the white female. He had a lot of complaints about her, mainly about how bossy and clingy she was, sending Tehu off from Fawkes, who had known the hawk a lot longer than her.

She glanced up at the whistle, watching with surprise at the exercise. It was a smooth execution, obviously rehearsed. Dalgina was just as curious as Kelia about the point of it. Taru quickly cleared it up with her words. Nodding her head with understanding Dalgina stepped over to the drawer, taking a small piece of meat for herself. Tehu chirped excitedly, the picture of what had just happened fresh in both their minds. She backed up a little, just a short space between them before mimicking the whistle. Tehu flapped his wings wildly before pushing off, gliding to Dalgina's hand. He caught on, batting his wings wildly as he tried to balance, a touch short.

Swiftly Dalgina tilted her arm, helping him regain his balance. Eagerly Tehu climbed along her arm, beak running over her fur searching for the treat. She quickly revealed it, the kestrel eagerly gulping it down. Giggling Dalgina stroked his head, just holding him close.

It appeared to Hotaru that Dalgina had a gift with languages and was incredibly studious. In the past several weeks, she had become proficient in avian low speech. On top of english and low speech, Dalgina also sometimes spoke in a third language of unknown origin. It wasn't often that Dalgina slipped into her third language, but it had happened a couple times. Hotaru, who hated languages and learning them, had taken several months to learn low speech and nearly a year to perfect the language.

When the demonstration was done, Hotaru stepped back and listened as Tehu chirped excitedly. There was a shuffling of paws that was quickly followed by the flapping of wings. The young kestrel was still having trouble flying and he had to flap constantly in order to reach Daligna. When the sound of flapping stopped and the puppy's eager giggles floated towards the blind female, Hotaru nodded her head approvingly. The pair would have to repeat the exercise over and over again. The drill would be beneficial to both parties, although Hotaru was not looking forward to drilling with Kelia.

"Well done Dalgina, Tehu. The two of you should repeat this exorcise several times a day." Fawkes added his own words of praise in low speech. Kelia, who felt completely dejected by that point in time, decided that she could do the same. The chick flapped her useless wings and dropped off of the dresser with a loud thump. Hotaru, surprised and worried about the tiny falcon, rushed forward and gently picked up the chick. Fawkes, squawked and scolded the white falcon for her stupidity.

She beamed under Taru's praise, tail wagging. Of course she would repeat it. She would do it so many times that Tehu would become the best flyer in the world, coming to her from anywhere she wished to her arm at a simple whistle. Tail swaying behind her Dalgina yelped as Kelia fell. Taru rescued the tiny bird quickly enough, but she seemed so sad. Stepping over Dalgina patted the white chick on the head, assuring it that it would fly too if it was patient.

Tehu was laughing at the white eagle the entire time, even though they were close in size. He had been quite jealous at the close bond between Kelia and Fawkes, feeling left out. Shaking her head Dalgina let him perch up on her shoulder. What else can I do? There was still so much for her to discover since she had hands now, wondering about it. She could play with Tehu now, she could walk, but that was all she knew right now, eager to expand her knowledge, though it had been barely past an hour of holding the form.

Having the tiny chick suddenly fall to the ground was an unnerving experience. Kelia had proven herself to be spunky, but that spunk seemed to also have a downside. Hotaru sighed as she placed the white falcon back in it's nest. Kelia gingerly stepped off the wolf's hands, but made no move to be gracious. She had some sort of beef with the wolf, most likely because she had imprinted on Fawkes first. Hoturu knew that birds imprinted on the first things they saw, but Fawkes had been a little special and had easily accepted the change. Hotaru just wondered when or if Kelia would ever grow accustomed to her.

Tehu, unlike all the others, found Kelia's stunt rather hilarious and laughed the entire time. Kelia spouted some of the words she had picked up from Fawkes. The red-tailed hawk, who was sick of the racket, ignored the chicks and returned to Hotaru's side. "Kelia, enough." The white falcon stopped talking, although Hotaru doubted that the chick had given up that easily. It was probably pouting.

The blind female's attention turned back to Dalgina who had asked a reasonable question. "There are plenty of new activities you can do with your new forms. You can hunt using different techniques with both of your new forms. On top of that, your hands allow open up a wide range of possibilities. You can use them to carve like I do with wood, or made medical salves to heal wounds. Now that you are able to hold a book and brush you can learn to read and write. There is plenty to learn, and I assure you the vast number of skills will satisfy even your curiosity."

Dalgina's ears flattened with embarrassment at the choice words Kelia spouted in return to Tehu's laughter. She'd learned not to repeat those, though it had taken some time to figure out which words to avoid. Quite a few were insulting, even if they didn't translate over into high speech, losing the majority of it's bite in the translation. Fawkes didn't even seem to care about the chicks fighting for his attention, flying to Taru's side. Tehu opened his beak, starting an insult back. Dalgina quickly silenced him with a sharp click, the kestrel looking at her a bit confused.

Shaking her head she listened to Taru's answer, eyes wide with excitement. Her tail wagged, eyes studying the hands she had just formed. Carving, like Papa and Taru. Reading sounded a bit alien to her, but she would certainly like to try it. Drawing! She'd be able to draw better! Not just with too large paws. Stepping over she hugged Taru, forgetting everything else. Thank you! Not just for helping her when she'd shifted, but for rescuing her, and giving her Tehu, and all the guidance she needed.
