Absolutely anyone welcome. Vessie's snoozing. +383

With hardly a breath of wind to stir the waters, the lake almost perfectly reflected the cloud-dotted blue sky. It was peaceful, a sharp contrast with the war-torn beginning of her first spring within the clan. She felt no need to dwell on that now, however; any time she wanted, she need only glance into her reflection at the ruin of her ear or feel the shift of beads around her neck to remember the wolves. There was plenty of time for that in the quiet moments of rainy days, however; she wanted to enjoy this gentle peace for as long as she could.

But a Centurion cannot just think about nothing, and she found her mind darting in different directions: the ranks and their occupants, the archery stands which could not be abandoned even though the conflict was over, the puppies that would be coming soon, and the courtship she’d sort of fallen into. That last was the hardest for her to think about; she felt like a clumsy yearling again. She knew how to fight and even how to lead, but not how to woo a girl for longer than a night. Pushing that from her mind, she tried to focus on patrol schedules when she was interrupted.

“Boy being deep in thought,” a croaking voice remarked from above. She smiled and tilted her head back, glancing at the large black bird perched on a low tree branch. This section of the lake was sheltered by vegetation, providing shade to make up for the still air. She stretched her forelegs and let her paws dip into the water as she reclined in her lupus form.

“Stark not asking,” the raven went on, and she knew then that he didn’t need to ask. Shaking her head, she dropped her muzzle to rest her chin in the grass, closing her eyes.

“Is there a purpose to your visit today?” Vesper asked her winged varlet.

He let out an amused kraa and hopped down on her back, which made her flinch before she adjusted to his weight. He was surprisingly heavy for a bird, though she supposed he was a little bit larger than his feathered comrades. “Only if boy wanting,” he said, and she hummed in acknowledgment, taking that as leave to nap.

Helotes was finally venturing out. He had been too angry, too ashamed to do much of that before. He was a failure, nearly a traitor to the clan because of his actions, or rather, his non-actions. The war was over, and he had barely raised a finger in military support of Inferni. What was he? He was certainly not a Hydra. But he was to be a father, and he had chosen to put that priority over the well-being of the clan. Surely, that decision would have its consequences; he was sure that now that the fighting was over, Ezekiel would come wanting answers, answers that would not please the Aquila.

The dark Lykoi felt small, and so, for the first time in a very, very long time, he had taken on his smallest form, and moved quickly out of the mansion in Lupus. The world outside was bright, warm and inviting and despite his mood the male closed his eyes and just breathed for a moment. It smelt wonderful, the and tension that had been in the air before was gone. All in all, the world suddenly became beautiful; he was alive, his mate was healthy and very pregnant, and soon he would be a dad. With his mood renewed, he set out at a brisk pace.

His plan had originally been to scout the borders, a menial task that would take his mind off things, but as he walked a familiar scent came to his nose. Vesper! He had not spoken to her since he had asked for Zana’s hand, and it would be good to catch up with her. He and Centurion had an unspoken bond of friendship that went beyond the call of duty, so he knew she would not judge him for his laxity during the conflict. The Lykoi followed his nose right to her.

The maid was napping in the sunlight, her shadowy companion perched on her back like a freakish blot of night. He gave the crow a sneering look but said nothing, instead, choosing to lay down beside her. His umber eyes slid over to her, and he wondered what she was dreaming. Probably about a pretty girl; funny how the two of them seemed to share dreams that way.

This sucks because I've had to force myself to start posting again. >__>

There had hardly been time to dream, but what images did flicker in those few moments of paradoxical sleep filled her with fire to contrast the gentle day. When the raven croaked a terse “Helotes” in greeting to the Hydra, the Centurion woke wanting to kill or kiss something. She began to scramble to all fours when she saw the dusky lupus shape of the male, but she only sat up and stared at him.

“Hi,” Vesper blurted, and a smirk twitched at the side of her lips. She looked him over in amusement but chose not to remark on his form (mostly because the last time she’d seen him like this had been under less than pleasant circumstances). Shrugging off the last fragments of sleep and yawning, she scooted away to keep a polite distance and glanced up at the tree branch above them, where a ruffled Stark had chosen to perch.

“What are you doing out here?” she asked, although the question was just as clumsy as her surprised greeting had been. Of course, most of the clan would want to be out and enjoying a peaceful day like this. Now that everything was slowing down, with only the occasional duty to keep them busy, they could afford some relaxation. The ember-eyed warrior especially might want to just hang out for a while, considering his situation. Her expression softened, but it still retained its characteristic teasing, smirking edge. Her blue eyes were bright. “How is Zana?”

Vesper looked quite becoming sleeping in the sunlight, but Helotes could never look at her like he looked at other females ever again. If anything, she was like a sister to him, or a brother, the concept of which brought a lot of amusement to him. He smiled softly, but then her feathered friend decided to screech out a greeting at him. He flinched, still not used to the fact that the bird could talk somewhat, and he threw a strange glance up at the crow.

His voice though had woken the Centurion from her slumber, and she looked up to give Helotes a bemused look, which he readily returned. She shifted a bit away from him and greeted him, and he nodded at her, Hello to you too. He said with his trademark smirk. Something about Vesper always made him feel like he had just arrived to Inferni, and that his mother and brother were still alive. But it was not that way now, but it was ok, the wheel of life had to keep on turning.

His friend asked about his mate, and he blew out his breath threw the sides of his mouth, ballooning his lips for a moment, She’s as fat as a cow. And then he laughed, showing Vesper that he was just joking… well, somewhat. Zana was indeed quite large, and from certain angles seemed to have taken on a perfectly round shape, Helotes was surprised she didn’t just roll away sometimes. Then, turning back to his companion, And you? Have you found yourself a pretty girl to woo? And his smirk nearly grew to reach his ears.

GOOD. >:C +311

She and Helotes had come a long way from their first meeting. So long as she didn’t think too hard about that star-stained night, Vesper could imagine that they’d gone from enemies to comrades to friends without further complication. Only her rarest nightmares brought the event up in any shape and form, giving the monster that prowled her sleep eyes like embers that were Helotes, Columbine, Marcel, the Boreas wolf, all swirled together. No, instead Helotes was like the brother she’d never had, both in bond and spirit. They were alike enough to get along yet different enough to keep things interesting.

The other laughed, and the coywolf grinned. “Thought so,” she quipped. “I mistook her for a giant egg the other day.” A remark about Helotes’ child being big leaped to the tip of her tongue, but she forbade it to spring out into the open. Even in joking, she knew that some in the clan were concerned about how the pygmy would go through the ordeal. And, even if she wouldn’t admit it to anyone, everything regarding birth and pregnancy scared the shit out of her. She knew she’d make herself scarce when the Vigiles went into labor, however much it shamed her.

Vesper looked forward to hearing the mewl of the babes, however. She had always been a bit awkward around children, and she couldn’t remember interacting with one so young. That the kids would be Helotes’ made it a bit easier; she might fancy herself an uncle to them. She grinned at the thought.

Helotes grinned too, but it was a shade wickeder—and when his question hit her large ear, a clumsy and loud “uhhhh” left her gaping mouth. Was she acting like a twitterpated buffoon? Could Helotes really see that?

Then: “Oh shit, I didn’t say anything in my sleep, did I?”

The raven cackled.

Helotes could not help but smile knowingly at her words about Zana, his mate did in fact look like an assortment of round and oblong objects, but certainly not like the beautiful coyote she once was. He knew the her strange bodily change was temporary though and that any day she might pop out their spawn and revert back to her tiny self. Helotes both venerated and loathed that day.

Vesper’s reaction to his next statement though just tickled him and he laughed at her sudden bashfulness. It was better than any reaction she could have had, because it told everything. So there is a girl! He said, his mouth still full of mirthful giggles, The rumors are true then… He grinned again, knowing full well that he was goading her. There had been whispers, of course, but he had paid them no heed. But now they came to the forefront of his mind again, the tails being strung of the Centurion and how she was sweet on a certain redheaded Consul girl. Helotes could not blame her, she obviously had excellent taste in women.

While he waited for her no doubt awkward reply, the dark Lykoi male laid down fully on his side, letting the rays of the sun warm him completely. If he hadn’t been so intrigued on what she would say, he might have fallen asleep right then and there.

The dusky male laughed, and the Centurion flattened her ear at him—although her scowling was in vain, and she quickly reverted back to sheepishness. It was such a normal emotion, and strange to think that the scarred female could be rendered bashful and speechless with a few words. As much as she hated to admit it, she was still young, and the matters of love and attraction were rocky enough ground. It was simple enough to admit her feelings to herself, but to the rest of the clan? It wasn’t really any of their business anyway, right?

“Rumors?” Vesper maintained her glowering this time. “Ah, fuck you, Helotes,” she said, watching the male grin then loll in the grass. “It’s not a big deal or anything. Maybe it would be if I wasn’t openly, well, what I am”—she managed a wicked, boyish grin—“but come on. I like redheads.”

It was maybe not the subtlest admission, but at least she didn’t drag the pretty Consul’s name around in their gossip. She doubted there were rumors (Stark would actually tell her it was too obvious to be a rumor), but she would rather Inferni not turn into a group of gossiping girls. A lot of the more matter-of-fact canines, the best scouts and warriors, simply noted facts and moved on.

Then again, not having fun from time to time did get boring.

“Asshole,” the scarred subleader muttered, and rolled over so that she was sprawled across the bigger coyote’s side. She smacked at his paws with her little ones and stretched over to tug on his good ear. “I do have authority in this clan, you know,” she said through a mouthful of Hydra. “I’d watch what you say about me if I were you!” A high-pitched, almost girlish growl punctuated her point.

Her reply was not as awkward as he had imagined, but he was forgetting who she was he supposed. Vesper was not one to blubber all over herself, and whatever weakness she might feel she always seemed to hide well. But being her friend, Helotes could tell that despite her snide slight at him, the thought of rumors did bother her to some degree, and in the face of his friendly accusation she spilt the beans that the whispers were indeed founded. She mentioned the red head and he laughed, Hey, I like them too! And then he laughed in a way that only a coyote could.

The girl then draped her tiny frame over his playfully and nipped at his ear, affirmed to him that she was indeed his superior and not doing very well at sounded convincing. He lift his jaws to snap back at her ruff, Yeah, yeah, whatever. And a warm chuckle filled his throat as he laid he head back down into the grass.

Helotes was very happy, and a soft smile graced his lips as his gaze fanned out into the emptiness of the day. He was a lucky man, to have a lover who now carried his children, and friends like Vesper who he could be comfortable with. He also had his family close, Jacinto and Ilusion were always mingling around enjoying their own lives he imagined. Not many were as blessed as he, and for a moment he believed that this might be how the rest of his life was going to play out.
