How long had it been since he had last seen his mother? How long had he been traveling with Amy, hidden inside her cart and out of sight? Kohaku didn't know and slowly his memory was starting to fade. He remembered his mommy's face, her sweet voice, and kind eyes. He remembered how she used to scold him and snuggle with him. He remembered the taste of her milk and how much taller she was than him. But he was also forgetting things too. Kohaku now smelled like Amy, and he was forgetting how his mommy had smelled. He couldn't go to his own coat for reassurance anymore; she had all but disappeared. The tiny male was having the same problem with Lucia, whom he had begun to miss as well. At first it was great not having her around to bother him, but now he just wished he could play with his sister again.

Kohaku sat alone in a small clearing. Amy had just left him to go trade with some strange canine and didn't want him around to mess things up. Big puppy eyes searched the area, their orbs steadily changing color. His once puppy-blue eyes had started to change into a bluish green color. The camp held a few furs to sleep on and a big pile of burnt wood in the middle. Amy had left a snack for him, which he had eaten as soon as she turned around. With nothing to do and no one to play with, Kohaku's young mind became extremely bored and impatient.

Finally deciding that enough was enough, the tiny male sprinted into the forest. Although Amy had specifically told him to stay put, he couldn't take the wait. Kohaku bounded through the forest, running and playing as hard as any puppy. He jumped after grasshoppers, growling and making lots of noise. A tiny shrew caught the pup's eye as it scurried away from him. A wicked smile crossed his face as he lunged at the tiny mammal. It squeaked in surprise and easily evaded his pathetic attempt to capture it. Kohaku's tail wagged as the game commenced. He howled and chased after the shrew, scampering through the underbrush and tearing through the mud. Unfortunately, no matter how hard he tried he just couldn't catch the shrew.

Eventually, the chase ended by a tiny stream. The bubbling water flowed over tiny rocks and didn't even reach the puppy's knees. Giggling, Kohaku began to roll in the shallow water until his thin coat was soaked. Luckily, the day was warm enough to make the damp feeling pleasant. Once the colorful child was completely wet, he lay down in the stream and nipped at the bubbles as the passed over his paws.

The day had gotten warm and the sun was shining, much to Itheral's displeasure. If there was one thing he hated, it was warm, sunny days. Oh sure, it was all nice and pretty, but his black fur always made it uncomfortably hot. His size didn't help much either. So, after having a small snack of leftover rabbit he'd caught the day prior, the wolf began a little exploration through the nearby woods he'd wandered past. There was some form of shade there, and besides, he could heard the faint babbling of a creak not too far ahead. That would make a nice place for his daily nap.

Tongue lulled out of Itheral's open maw, the fat wolf panting heavily as he trudged forward through the underbrush. Leaves crunched underfoot, twigs snapping as those large paws trundled over everything, making their way towards the stream. His mind was clouded at the heat, his body still not yet accustomed to the warm, muggy heat of the area. He considered a swim in the creak, but as it came into view, he was it was far too small for a wolf of his...stature. Sighing deeply, Itheral walked over to the edge of the babbling creak, and let himself flop down, snout resting just in front of the creek. "Well," he thought, resting his head upon his crossed forepaws, "At least I'm in the shade now..."

Almost as soon as his eyes fluttered shut, Itheral was fast asleep, snoring softly. Tip of his tail flicked about, his right hind paw twitched every so often. Occasionally, the tubby brute shifted over onto his side with a heavy grunt, twisting into what looked like a rather uncomfortable position. Soon enough, he had rolled onto his back, large belly facing the treetops, limbs tucked up against his body in a rather amusing fashion. His hind legs would sometimes peddle into the air slowly, as if he were dreaming about running. As comfortable as the new position was for Itheral, it did cause his snoring to grow quite a bit louder; surely alerting any and all creatures nearby to the snoozing brute's presence.

Kohaku played innocently in the water. His tiny muzzle snapped at the bubbles as he tried to catch them when they passed over his legs. It was an interesting game, but one the puppy could never win. Eventually, Kohaku grew bored of his impossible game and climbed out of the stream. He shook his short coat free of water and looked around for anything interesting to do. Playing by himself was alright, but what he really wanted was his sister to play with. Lucia was always a challenging wrestling partner.

Blueish-green eyes scanned the area as oversized ears flicked back and forth. The sound of heavy snoring caught Kohaku's attention and he turned around in a tight circle as he tried to find the source. The sound came from a distance, but wasn't so far off that he couldn't travel to it. Excited again, the colorful puppy lunged forward and tore through the forest. The trees began to thin a little as the stream curved back and forth. It wasn't long before a large wolf came into view. Very large, in fact. Not only was the black wolf big like all adults, he was round too. The stranger's paws hung in the air and moved as if he were running. The funny sight that made Kohaku laugh quietly.

A great snore came from the sleeping adult, which made Kohaku smile mischievously. He lowered himself a little and padded as silently as he could towards the black wolf. The puppy's eyes twinkled as he approached, ready to scare the other with a deafening howl. However, the male's back regions caught the pup's attention and made him pause. It looked like something was missing form the adult's special place. Kohaku contorted his body so that he could look back at his own special parts. Sure enough, he was right. The adult was missing part of his special place. Surprised, Kohaku turned back to look at the space between the black male's legs, just to make sure. Disgust built up in Kohaku's tiny heart and he yelled, "It gone!"

The sleeping wolf's paws twitched into the air, a soft grunt escaping his throat as the pup discovered him. Unknown to anyone else, though, was that in Itheral's head, his previously idyllic dream was becoming a nightmare.

The sun had been shining down on he endless green field, with hundreds...no, thousands of fat, slow bunnies. All for Itheral to catch and eat at his leisure. All was well in this perfect world....until the distant sound of thunder met the prancing wolf's ears. He looked back over his shoulder, seeing dark, ominous storm clouds forming far on the horizon. He knew exactly what that meant. Panic filled the wolf, and he began running as fast as he could. He ran and he ran and he ran. It seemed like an eternity. Every time he looked back, the clouds were growing closer. Soon, the sun's rays were smothered, darkness covering the land. Grasslands transformed into a twisted mockery of a forest, branches twisted and gnarled in unnatural mockeries of their nature forms.

Itheral knew all too well exactly where he was, despite the disfigured trees, which only terrified him more. He looked back behind him again. This time, he caught glimpses of dark, shadowy figures darting through the trees, filling him with dread. They were much, much faster then he was, and were catching up quickly. Looking ahead, the wolf jumped over a small creek, which he recognized immediately from his childhood. Another glance back, and the figures were right behind him. Slavering, twisted mockeries of his former pack mates, closing the gap with unreal speed. He looked ahead, and saw a large, hollowed out log. He knew he shouldn't go for it, knew that he'd never fit. But his paws were not his own here, and he dove headlong into it.

Itheral caught fast, his head and shoulder caught tight. The splinters dug at his flesh, the near darkness enveloping him as he heard the heaving, labored breaths of his demons catch up and begin circling him outside. He begged, pleaded for mercy, but he felt the first set of fangs upon his rump. He yelped loudly, to which he heard unearthly laughing. Another biting sting, then another. One after another, the beasts tore at his hindquarters in a cruel display of dominance, laughing and howling those demonic laughs. This went on and on, Itheral crying and begging for it to stop, until, with a bite and a horrifying tugging...

"It gone!"

The shrill yelp Itheral woke up with caused the nearby birds to fly off in panic. Suddenly free from the log, eyes burning in the light, unsure of what was real and what wasn't, the rotund wolf rolled and slipped to his feet, stumbling around, narrowly avoiding trampling the nearby pup. With his uncoordinated steps mixed with his eyes being shut from the burning light, it wasn't long until the bumbling wolf tripped up, landing headlong into the creek with a mighty splash.
The shock of the water seemed to snap Itheral out of is panic, though he remained where he was: face partially submerged in the shallow water, backside in the air, eyes cracked open ever so slightly as they slowly turned towards the pup, with a glare that could burn a hole through stone.

The sound of panicked wingbeats temporarily distracted Kohaku as his head turned to look at the birds flying away. A sense of pride welled up in the puppy's chest and his tail wagged at the site. Scaring birds was fun, but they often ignored him when he tried to chase them in the forest. His mommy used to scare them for him, which was entertaining but not the same. Scaring them himself was more fun. If only his mommy was there to see him successfully scare the birds. Shinning eyes watched as the birds retreated from the scene.

Movement in the corner of his eye caught Kohaku's attention, and just in time. A pair of legs swung his way and Kohaku yelped as he scrambled to get out of the way. Being crushed by a round wolf was not his idea of a good time. Thankfully, the round wolf missed the young male by just a hair. Once the puppy was safe at a distance away and behind a big rock, he watched enthusiastically as the bigger wolf tripped over himself and landed headfirst into the creak. The tiny male's tail wagged and he laughed at the site. The other male was so funny! For once, Kohaku wasn't the one landing face first and butt in the air. Lucia had always laughed at him for that, and now he knew why. It was funny when it happened to someone else.

An intense glare from the other made the young puppy swallow his laugh. His ears became pinned to his skull and his wagging tail sought refuge beneath his legs. Kohaku lowered himself to the ground and whined. Was he in trouble? The colorful puppy was sure that he hadn't done anything wrong. He had just said what was on his mind. Was that bad? Suddenly wishing Amy was around, Kohaku slipped behind his rock and hoped that the round wolf would stop glaring at him.

One advantage of waking up from a nightmare only to land face first into a creek of cold water was that said nightmare is quickly forgotten. Of course, there is the minor inconvenience of becoming soaking wet, being yanked from an otherwise restful sleep, and all-round not pleasant-ness. But as Itheral looked over towards the source of his current position, instead of seeing some mischievous fox (as he'd had a few run-ins with the sneaky little bastards in the past), he saw a little pup, who immediately started to cower when his eyes met his. Having no real experience with pups, Itheral really didn't know what to think when he saw the kid. The moment he started to whimper, however, something...new popped into his head. He felt a need to go over and make sure he stopped whimpering, that there wasn't anything wrong, that he wasn't mad at him, even though the usual part of his brain was. It was an almost motherly feeling.

Heaving himself out of the stream, Itheral stepped out slowly to the ground, dripping wet. "Easy little guy...I'm not gonna get angry at you or somethin'." he said to the pup, trying his best not to sound as gruff as he usually did. He pondered a moment, trying to think for something he could do or say that might put the pup at ease. An idea popped into his head, and the large wolf lowered himself down onto his rounded belly, placing his head upon crossed forepaws before speaking up again.

"The names Itheral...whats yours?

Confusion and guilt welled up inside the small puppy as he cowered behind his rock. One minute it had been all fun and games, the next minute some strange wolf was glaring at him. Kohaku didn't know what he had done wrong but he silently promised never to do it again. He had to be a good boy, or else his mommy would never take him back. Kohaku had only wanted to go out and play, was that so bad?

The large wolf heaved himself out of the stream and strode over to Kohaku. Water droplets fell behind the wolf as he walked and formed a perfect path from the stream. Kohaku whimpered some more and crouched lower to the ground. He shut his eyes tight and he waited for the scolding that he knew would come. Perhaps the big male would try to hurt him like Amy had threatened to do. Luckily, what came at the puppy was not a harsh scolding or a rough beating, but kind words. Black eye lids cracked open and the tiny male stared up at the large stranger. "Not mad?"

Satisfied that he wasn't going to get in trouble, the colorful puppy untangled himself and sniffed the stranger. His larger frame had settled down onto the ground, lowering the male to Kohaku's hight. A name was given to the pup and he tried his best to repeat the word to himself, "Ifral." Kohaku nodded his head, memorizing the sounds and how to put them together. Bright eye's looked up at the Itheral and his tail wagged a little. "Name Kohaku."

Kohaku opened his mouth to ask about Itheral's missing parts when the sound of footsteps cut him off. He turned his head and flicked is disproportionate ears to listen. A second later, his mommy appeared from the forest. No, not his mommy. Kohaku's tail dropped as he looked closely at the white wolf that had come to join them. She was round like the black male, but perhaps not as round. Her scent was different and smelled heavily of the forest they were in. The biggest difference between her and the puppy's mommy was that she wasn't pure white like his mommy and didn't have any bald patches. Her coat was a mix of whites and very light greys, with an especially dark patch on her back. She wasn't his mommy. His mommy hadn't come back to get him. "I heard some screaming, is everything alright?"
