He was too late. She was going to die and he didn't get to tell her how he felt. His mind cast him images that he didn't want to see- the flash of metal swinging towards Lilin's face, the way her body crumpled to the ground as if her string had just been cut. He couldn't quite help the nausea rolling his stomach as he thought of the utter panic and desperation as he pushed himself harder. He'd seen most of their confrontation, the physical bits at least, and he'd been running as hard as he could to get there. He hadn't seen the dark warrior pulling out her sword until it came arching towards Lilin. And then he was moving faster than he ever had before. The warrior had backed off and fled as Saul got there, skidding to a halt and cradling Lilin's head. Her eyes were closed shut and he thought the worst had happened. He'd scooped her up, so delicately to try and avoid spinal damage and moved to take her home.

The more medically geared part of his brain was listening to the steady thump of her heart, the shallow breathing that was testament to her survival. She was alive and he had to try to convince the panicking part of him that this wasn't the end. She was unconscious, her brain shutting down to avoid the physical pain of the blow to the head. He'd read about all of this- she could get a concussion and she could go to sleep and not wake up again. Never before had Saul wished so deeply that he could squeeze her tight enough to tuck her into his heart and keep her safe. She was fragile, so delicate that he worried every minute of every day.

He walked on auto-pilot, green eyes only just registering the dark green humps of Jordheim before he was kicking open his door. He couldn't lay her on the floor like he had with Turnip- he moved to his bedroom, lowering himself to the floor and in turn lowering Lilin to his bed. She was still unconscious, but her breathing was beginning to get a little more regular and he thought he saw her eyelids fluttering. With a shaking voice, he ran trembling fingers down her cheek, wondering what he should do to wake her up. "Lili... Lili come back. Wake up... please." He whispered, a tear spilling over and down his cheek. He'd been too late to help her, and now he hoped beyond anything that he wasn't too late to save her.

Darkness had fallen. Someone had taken away the scorching sun and with its disappearance, thoughts and recollections had dimmed and finally vanished, shrouded in her unconscious mind. She couldn't tell how long she'd been ensnared in limbo; a forcibly induced oblivion she could not free herself from. Not yet. Had it been minutes, hours, days? Temporal length was a mystery, like everything else. She was stuck in a cold state of mind, only the compassionate press of another body against hers was perceived- the warmth it provided, the tenderness and urgency at work. While she could feel it, the barrenness of her mind could not make sense of it.

The driving force fueling the blow as Saul's foot connected with the wooden door was of great ampleur, but none of it registered in her brain. Four out of five methods of perception were suppressed- Lilin could not smell the musky fragrance that could've hinted at her beau's presence. She could not hear him or his pleas as her body was lowered to the bed. She could not see the intensity of his emerald gaze, nor could she taste the bloody, metallic flavor in the back of her mouth. The Soulstorm heir could do none of that. But she could feel the way he'd lovingly craddled her small frame against his hulking body, the caution exerted as he'd placed her upon his makeshift bed.

With every passing moment and every caress deposited on her body, darkness began to dissipate. It was the touch of her cheek; that slow, unsteady movement of his fingers running down her face that brought her back to reality, back to him. It wasn't a painless procedure; as the fog lifted, the throbbing agony located in her temples intensified. Where there had been nothingness, now there was confusion. She didn't bring her hands up to her head, unable to do anything but force her eyelids to open. Admist the blur, she found Saul's piercing green irises and soon thereafter, her own pools of mediterranean blue began tearing up from the overwhelming discomfort. "It hurts," she murmured through parted lips, her voice inevitably cracking under the pressure exerted on her brain.

nyaaaaah, ninja posting!

The feel of her cheek beneath his fingers was comforting and bittersweet at the same time. He could feel the panic subsiding a little at the sound of her breathing, the anxiety twisting his gut easing with the overtaking of the more logical part of his mind. Inwardly, he began to run through the herbs he knew that would help her. Arnica was famous for bringing out swelling, and he knew beyond a doubt that he would need to bring the swelling out on her head. If left, internal swelling could cause serious damage. By drawing it out, the swelling would come out in a lump and a bruise which would go down when it was healed properly. Thinking about ways he could help her was calming him down and for a few short seconds he didn't notice the brilliant blue eyes staring at him.

A gasp was given however when a scratchy and foggy voice came from the sleeping beauty. Green eyes clashed with blue and he was dismayed to see tears in his belle's eyes. He started, leaning forward and over her, searching her eyes and then her head. "Where exactly does it hurt, baby?" He questioned, concern saturating his voice. He a small grimace, he removed his hands from her body and snaked up the side of her head, creamy fingers applying the least amount of pressure possible, but enough to gauge where it hurt the most. Concentration hardened his features and Saul took on the look of a completely focused healer. His heart was still pounding however- fear and some unknown emotion coursing straight through his veins.

"What happened? Why were you fighting?" He questioned softly, trying not to sound so intense and angry. He would find out who this person was and he would hunt them down and hurt them. For now though, his sweetheart was hurting and there was something he could do about it. He knew he had a small stash of arnica leaves, found in the dampwoods not long ago and perhaps by force of fate, he had a few strips of willow bark from one of the willows trees closer to the Grand Lake. He would need to gather these items shortly, but for now he allowed green eyes to fix with blue once more, trying to gain some answers.

She couldn't pinpoint what was most distressing, her cognitive impairment or the blurred vision that accompanied it all. She had a vague understanding of her beau's actions and reactions from his constant shifting between positions. One of his knees had sunk into the straw mattress as he'd leaned over; his verdant orbs moved closer and they burned brighter with meticulousness. Only his eyes were easily distinguishable amidst the fog and she refused to divert her gaze away, even if tears further distorted the image before her. Green was her lifeline. His body partly hovered over her face, inspecting every detail of her physical features for possibly injuries. She could feel it all; if not from immediate touch, then from the energy and warmth emanating from his very being.

He'd spoken to her several moments ago and she could scarcely offer a response; a soft whine escaped the confinements of her maw. Her mind was was wounded; that's where it hurt. Her soul and ego were bruised beyond salvation. Her head throbbed in protest when both of his hands ran over the top of her head, skimming along different regions until they finally settled on the source of her affliction. His goal wasn't to hurt her, she knew. But even the slightest pressure was enough to coax a defenseless yelp out of her. Where she found the willpower to shy away from his examining touch was a mystery. Her head jerked up and sideways, rewarding her with a bout of dizziness she'd never quite experience before. She froze then, accepting her fate and silently praying for the Gods to alleviate her burden.

If Lilin could have sunk into the mattress right then and there, she would have. "I didn't want to," she hissed in response to his inquiry, unable to recall what had led to the unpredictable assault. She couldn't recall the female's face nor the conversation they'd been having prior to their brawl; if it could even be referred to as such. "I didn't start it. I didn't." The Soulstorm heir was sure of that. Lies and deceit were no foreign things to her but this time, none of it had been her fault. Her lip quivered under the mental strain of it all; trying to remember how she'd ended up in this situation, trying to remember who she'd been speaking to at the time. "I can't remember her face. I can't remember anything."

The littlest whine that escaped his belle just about broke his heart and he allowed a self indulgent sweep of her cheek and neck to try and soothe. He could see the utter confusion and pain clouding her eyes and he knew he was going to have to administer some kind of medication soon. Of course, he couldn't relieve the pain until he'd gauged the extent of her injuries and that included the tactile examination. Her face remained blank as he gently felt her head, around her ears and the back of her head before coming up the back and over the crown. He knew immediately when he'd touched the pain. The heat that radiated from the partial lump, as well as the almost spongy quality of the patch of skin was a definite give away. The yelp that came from Lilin however was enough to tell him she'd had enough. Her instinctive movement was allowed and he stood up with an apologetic smile.

"One moment, I just have to get something from the other room." He said softly, exiting the bedroom for just a few short seconds. He was pleased that he knew where everything was and was able to grab the plants quickly. She was going to have to chew them- he couldn't put them in water or crush them. He entered once more, folding the little bundle of willow bark in a leaf of arnica and wrapping this whole bundle in a bunch of fennel, that would hydrate her. He returned and knelt down, cinnamon backed ears perking as she spoke. Her original hiss was taken with a soft snort and the nod of his head, but it quickly progressed into something like a defensive beg. He gave a soft shush, a hand caressing her arm softly. "Its okay Lili, I believe you."

He cooed softly, before her almost defeated voice came again, admitting that she couldn't remember her attacker or what had happened. That would make it difficult for Saul to track them down, but he would do it however he had to. He nodded softly, reassuring her that everything was okay. She was safe now, and that was all that matters. "Will you chew this for me? It won't taste nice at all... the fennel will be really juicy though and it'll help you swallow." He asked, before placing the bundle on her tongue. He smiled at her, a tender and caretaking smile. "Can you tell me when your head starts to feel better?" He asked, knowing it was going to take about ten minutes for the willow bark to get into her bloodstream and take effect. Shuffling to sit properly on the floor, Saul waited, green eyes never leaving blue.

If the eyes were the window to a person's soul, the frigid film covering her dilated pupils were an open testament to the injury within. Superficial bruises littered her body, none dramatic enough to leave a permanent scar. It was all inside, a wound concealed by a cascade of hair that could go unnoticed to the untrained eye. Dichotomous receivers twitched lightly with Saul's departing footsteps; the only acquiescence achievable, one that would not require too much effort nor put too much strain on her body. He was gone just for a little while; Lilin couldn't tell how long exactly. By the time she'd fully acknowledged his absence, he was already back at her side.

The rest of their conversation was a blur- she would phase in and out, tuning in often enough to gather bits and pieces of his explanation. She did not try to understand the reasons why she had to chew something, nor what the concoction was exactly. It didn't matter. Her trust in Saul was unconditional; instincts told her to do as she was told and not question it. And so she did, providing the littlest of nods in response. She swallowed the mixture of blood and saliva in the back of her throat with great difficulty, parting her lips and revealing a red-stained tongue; making it possible for her beau to deposit the bundle where it belonged. Even in her bewildered state of mind, the Soulstorm heir knew that it would be forced upon her if she refused to cooperate.

She chewed as was instructed, slowly and with no real motivation aside from the promise of relief. Lengthy minutes of determination led to success; Lilin swallowed the ground bundle, allowing her face to twist into a grimace before she turned to face her companion. His smile was returned, though she couldn't withhold the guilt from her tone of voice. ''I should have waited for you.''

He could see the confusion on her face, the glazed look in her eyes that spoke of pain and bewilderment. It twisted his gut painfully to think of his sweet belle in pain, but he also knew that he was doing something about it. The bundle of herbs was met with a bloodied tongue before taken into her mouth and chewed. It would taste nasty, but she didn't seem to complain about it. The occasional swallow of herb infused saliva was given, but otherwise she remained silent. And Saul wasn't going to break the peace by chastising her- aside from the fact that there was no point, it wouldn't help any with the headache and confusion he was certain she was feeling. Instead, he sat next to the bed, facing her and running a hand rhythmatically over her forehead, pushing the curls from her face to have them spring back once more.

The rough edge to her voice as she spoke caused him to look down sharply into her eyes. It was a shock to hear Lilin admit that she'd been wrong, but he supposed the hit to the head might have shaken things up in there. He couldn't help the humourless snort that came from him as he nodded almost absently. "Yes, you should have waited." He cooed softly, his agreement enough of a chastisement for one day. It was only then that he realised she'd managed to swallow the whole bundle- her eyes were looking a little clearer to say the least. He felt he could breath a sigh of relief in that moment, the weight of her head injury weighing heavily on him.

With this weight lifted from his shoulders, he allowed this new and foreign emotion to swell in him. He had been terrified of what had happened to her, whether she was going to live. The thought of Lilin dying made him want to wretch until the thought was purged from his body. Aside from the terror he'd felt. the anger coursing through his body was like nothing he'd felt before in his life and that scared him too. The intensity of what he was feeling, in that very moment and when he'd first caught sight of her dropping to the ground nearly overwhelmed him and he gave one chocking sob against the bed. He opened his mouth to apologise, but his mind seemed to have other ideas. "I love you, Lilin... so so much." He spoke softly despite the intensity of his words, green eyes looking into blue- he'd lost the ability to look away from her a long while ago. Tears brimmed and fell silently, his overactive brain throwing him so many images of what could have been. He almost didn't notice that he'd just told his belle that he loved her.

Of course he agreed with her statement. She hadn't expected him to react any differently; Lilin had spoken the truth, momentarily putting her pride aside to admit her wrong doing. Life had a peculiar way of complicating things. Never once, not even as a loner, had she ever been physically assaulted by a stranger. Her matriarch's religious beatings were as close as she'd ever gotten to suffering. How ironic that she would learn the meaning of true pain now that she had the protection of her pack and family; making her a near unattainable target. She better understood Saul's concerns now, as well as Bran and Niernan's extreme caution exhibited in the face of strangers.

Should anyone aim to harm the pack as a whole, they wouldn't go for the brawny males. Her general size and fighting inexperience made her the bull's eye. Her relatives had understood what it meant to leave one of their females unaccompanied now that they openly imposed their claim on neutral lands. They were waving a pack banner for all to see, exposing themselves to the entire world- the good and the bad. Her willpower and pride were up to par with the boys, if not stronger; but it wasn't enough to keep her safe. Her dam had survived this long due to ruthlessness, barbarity and flawless manipulation. Lilin, on the other hand, possessed compassion where her mother did not. And it made her inept. "I'm sorry," she murmured shamefacedly, clearly disheartened at the idea of being the weakest link.

Her gaze became more focused as time went on. Saul's unexpected sob startled her greatly, causing both of her receivers to lower ever so slightly. "Don't cry, I'm okay," she offered with a whine, her nose twitching with the impending tears threatening to spill. Both young lovers were emotional wrecks. For the Soulstorm heir, seeing her companion and pillar of strength break down in such a way was enough to pain her more than the physical injuries she sustained. Her closest hand was brought to his head, where she allowed it to rest in a comforting gesture. Lilin had foreseen an apology of sorts, but she too was taken aback by the inner workings of her beau's conscience. His words were bittersweet. She'd wanted to hear it for so long but this wasn't the way she'd envisioned the whole thing. Her lower lip quivered uncontrollably as a breath of fresh air was sucked in shakily, only seconds before her own secret rang clear. "I love you too."

The utterly guilty look on his belle's face wasn't something he had seen often. They both knew she shouldn't have gone alone- but in reality neither of them perceived any danger in the trip. They couldn't have known that there would be someone out there willing and able to hurt another in such a way. An attack like that had to have been caused by something other than a random meeting in a derelict place. Green eyes were intense, his brain trying to piece together the puzzles as Lilin lapsed into self-pity. Her soft words were met with a crooked smile as he looked back up. She looked so upset that he couldn't help trying to make it better. With a soft caress of her cheek, he leant down and licked her nose softly.

"Don't worry, baby, I just won't let you out of my sight again. I hope you can live with that." He chuckled, amusement playing on his face despite the terror this situation had rooted in him. He was trying to make it better for her, but the sob that broke their silence clearly didn't help. Her words were punctuated with a soft whine and it comforted Saul a little to know that she was beginning to think clearer. The weight of her hand on his head was pushed against just slightly, a need to get closer to her even though it would probably hurt. She was so fragile in this moment that he didn't want to move too quickly or with too much force- he was scared that it would, in some way, hurt her. So he remained still, reeling from the fact that his mouth had just blurted out his deepest secret and with no commands from his brain.

The silence stretched between them and Saul could feel his heartbeat pick up. Green eyes refused to move from her face and he caught the quiver of her bottom lip and the sharp intake of breath. He couldn't decipher if this was good or bad news, when sweet words were returned. His ears flashed back against his head for just a moment before he realised that she'd returned the sentiment, before a great grin broke out on his face. Ecstasy rushed through him and he had to refrain himself from leaping on the bed with her. Instead, he leaned forward, unable to keep the grin off of his face, aiming to give her a long kiss.

One of her greater nightmares was not being able to respond to his caresses adequately. This wasn't the ideal situation for love declarations- all she could wrap her thoughts around was the devoted manner with which he spoke, and the intensity of his gaze. It apparently took some time for her words to register in his mind- Lilin couldn't help but briefly wonder if her assertion had been a figment of her imagination or if he'd simply been too distraught to hear any of it. A worried frown tugged at the corners of her lips when his ears adopted a horizontal position; the Soulstorm heir was clearly taken aback by her beau's reaction. Her confusion escalated dramatically for several seconds, a period of time during which she held her breath. Should she have repeated it?

Her receivers were about to mirror an angle identical to Saul's when his maw finally stretched into the biggest smile she'd ever seen. Lilin exhaled audibly, visibly relieved by the dreamy grin adorning his face. Her co-leader's reaction was mignon, there was no denying it. She anticipated what came next; the forward lean that brought his face to hers, his need to seal this moment with a kiss. Feeble arms wrapped around his neck. Her body aches were nearly forgotten for the duration of their embrace, during which she granted him access to her lips. They connected briefly, alternating between the delicate graze of her mouth against his and the consecutive, tender licks lavishing his muzzle. Unlike the first time they'd kissed, lust held no significant role in her actions. This was an unspoken promise; she was his and he was hers.
