The day was soundly calm. Birds sang and the air was sweet and warm with the scents of late spring. In the warrior’s reserve stood Jaden, the obsidian male apparently busying himself with archery practice. He had thirteen handcrafted arrows and each was repetitively drawn and fired across his finely crafted bow. They would sing and curve in a long arch until they stuck firmly into the trunk of a tall pine tree. It wasn’t a hard shot to make for the practiced archer. Not a single shaft missed its mark, though some would slam into a particularly hard knot in the soft wood and fall a few meters to the grass bellow instead of staying suspended. It wasn’t his accuracy he practiced, but the fluid movement it took to draw and fire the deadly arrows. It was something that needed to be second nature.

But, in all truth it was already dedicated to memory. This training was a ruse that allowed his deep blue eyes to fog as he fell into himself. The distant gaze only ever found life when he was required to climb the pine tree and retrieve his arrows. Something that took slightly more than passive thought. The rest of time was left unexplored as a deep and insurmountable pain engulfed him. Hours passed and still he continued. Even after soreness claimed his muscles from climbing and pulling back the tight string of the bow and blisters formed from holding the tails of his arrows he kept on.

Each arrow was a wound on his heart being let go. One might have been his own indecisiveness. Another could have been the pain he caused the ones he loved so dearly. But he would inevitably have to go and retrieve them for they were truly impossible to escape. That he hadn’t chosen between them would always linger. That this inevitable ending had come didn’t make it any less painful. Thana had chosen to leave him. He couldn’t blame her for it either. How long had he expected her to wait on his selfish desires? He had only wanted to avoid this pain… but looking back he now realized his prolonging of this process had changed nothing, if not making it more painful. He hadn’t been clear minded enough to see that. Now Thana had given up on him, her words for it were that he didn’t “love her enough” to choose. Maybe this was true. He hadn’t loved either enough to let them be done with the pain of waiting on his decision. He had instead stalled under some selfish sentiment that here was some less painful way to deal with a conflict of the heart. He had been wrong.

He still craved the love that had been given to him. A less morally bound man might have looked at this as a relief. The choice had been made for him. Thana had left and X’yrin remained. But how was that fair? Was he to treat her like some leftovers of his heart? It sickened him to think about for her love deserved so much more. She deserved his decision and he had not given it. He couldn’t bring himself before her under such pretenses and beg for the love he was undeserving of. So he continued his practice, slowly, thoroughly, trying to let time ease this new pain until it got too dark to see his target and he was forced to turn in to a sleepless night by himself.

Jaden does. Jaden speaks. Jaden thinks.
