The man is the trader that Ovidiu was sold to by the family who had originally bought him. He has been coming after Ovi for a month, chasing him from freetown.[WC: 630]

Ovidiu was finally beginning to feel comfortable. Sure, he was still hungry, tired, dirty; but he didn’t feel like he was being hunted anymore. Comfort was such a wonderful thing, and it came in so many different forms. Once, comfort had been thick, sweet smelling furs and curled up in bed with his owners. Now, it was a freshly caught rabbit and the shade under a tree. But either way, comfort meant not being hunted.

It was hot, but Ovi didn’t mind, and he lazing under a large conifer tree, his stripes dappled by the light filtering through the branches, and his eyes were closed. He wasn’t quite asleep but he was close, and the warm day felt like the best thing ever, it even made him forget about his hunger, forget about the burs and dirt clinging to his fur. The tiger daydreaming, in his mind he was lying in a golden field, the sisters were brushing his hair, and Dalgina was there, and he was lying his head on her lap. She looked so beautiful, in the dappled light, her long, black hair falling around her like satin. Oh how he wished… he wished.

His thoughts were disturbed by a sound, it was a very subtle sound, like the crunching of leaves. As much as he wanted to fall back into his daydreams, he opened his slate eyes to the light of day. It was bright, for a moment he couldn’t see anything, but he remained still, his eyes looking around. What was that sound? It sounded like it came from that bush over there. Ovidiu pushed himself up onto his front paws, and suddenly his world exploded in sound.

At first, he was not sure what had happened, but birds had alighted from the bushes; crows, they called out an alarm. And then, there was a glint of a weapon; a long knife; and out of the bushes burst a short, burly dog. Ovidiu’s breath caught in his throat, but the man was rushing at him. No! He cried, and burst away from the place he had just been resting.

He ran, but his limbs were stiff, and he was still drowsy. The man, the man he had been running from for a month now had found him. How?! And before Ovidiu could get away, he found himself tangled up in the web of a net, Oh God! He cried, large blue eyes turned to the man. He walked up to Ovidiu boldly, a smile on his face; his face, Oh God… Ovi said again. He had not realized that when he escaped, when he had struck this man, that he would take an eye. The dog’s face was marred, a large fresh scar along his forehead, his cheek, through his eye. Ovidiu had done that, and now, he was back for revenge.

"You stupid cat," the man hissed, "I was going to make it easy for you the first time, but not now, now it will be slow, and you will be alive while I do it." He brandished that knife then, that dagger, and came towards him. No, he couldn’t die, not like this, not hung up and skinned like a pig. Ovidiu was scared, but his blood was boiling; he drew back his lips and revealed long teeth. He made a sound he had never heard come from him, a screaming hiss. The man cut through the net, and into Ovi’s flesh, and the tiger exploded.

The next minute was full of flying fur, blood, teeth and claws. But soon it settled, soon the call of the crows quieted. Ovidiu was standing in a pool of blood, and the man… he was no longer a man anymore. Slowly, the tiger turned and walked away.
