A shadow of his former self

The sun slowly began to crest the eastern horizon, turning the grey sky pink. Though he was surrounded by trees, the Russian could still picture the sun's rays reflecting off the ocean, and envisioned it rising over the sea. He sat, cross-legged, on a mossy patch of ground, near the base of an old oak, his mind empty and clear as he focused his mind, reigning in stray emotions and thought in order to retain his stoic mind set. The air misted before him as he deepened his breathing, his taught muscles relaxing for the first time in months. He felt the knots, and heard the pops as his stress made itself known. Still, he payed it no mind. The anger, sorrow, and fear seemed to melt away from him in a matter of minutes, and he allowed his mind to deepen the meditation, furthering himself from his body and focusing on the world around him. The song birds in the trees sung an alluring melody, while the insects began their own harmony. Other creatures of the woods began to stir, while the nocturnal hunters and foragers returned to their dens.

His mind wandered as his ears picked up the sounds of the living forest. He wondered of his old friends, wolves he had not seen since his departure, nor even warned of his absence. He pictured the pack he had fallen in with, their scent strong on the east blowing winds. And his mind wandered to the group he had sworn himself to. What had become of those patriots, he wondered. Had they followed through with the plan to subvert Salsola? Or had they fallen apart? Or, he feared, had they been discovered and hunted down?

He did not know the answer to these thoughts, and with that realization his troubles slowly began to return, though he fought against them with all his might. With a growl of defeat, Drizzt allowed his guilt to flood over him. He had abandoned his companions, his comrades, to face an powerful enemy alone. He had his reasons, but nothing would excuse his absence from their side. He had left to deal with a situation involving his sister months ago, with no warning to his friends. He had even walked out on his pack without a second thought.

With these thoughts swirling in his mind, Drizzt sighed and gathered himself against the oak, wrapping his arms around his knees as his head dropped on them. He was gone too long. What would he do now, with no information on the happenings of the land?

Unatsi can't give him any information, but they can be clueless together? D: Also back-dating this in my own timeline to before he joins AniWaya. And sorry for the rambling, this guy is tootaally new and his style seems to involve rambling anyway. xDD

Unatsikanogeni was not very comfortable traveling through these woodlands. It had been different on his spirit guide journey (even if he’d ended up delirious with exhaustion and nearly died a few times), and it had been different when he first ventured away from the Great Tribe’s lands. Nova Scotia, by comparison, had a greater ratio of wolf packs to land—and so the underbuilt man was constantly on edge, worried about stepping wrong or otherwise meeting an unfriendly pack wolf.

Even Undanvti, who constantly reassured him and guided him through times like these, had for the moment given up on the neurotic male. She occasionally offered him an impression—an emotion, a hazy concept, wordless and primitive—as to whether or not he was going the right direction, but otherwise she was silent and invisible. He couldn’t even catch a whiff of her foresty cervine scent.

This led him to become more nervous, walking on two legs through the trees, his sack slung over his shoulder and one paw resting timidly on the handle of his hand-scythe. What the rusty impromptu weapon was truly capable of in a fight, he didn’t know, and he prayed to his ancestors and God and all the spirits of the wood that he would never find out. He hated fighting, hated it—fighting and blood, especially his own, that was always in the forefront of his mind.

Unatsi coughed, looking bleakly at the mix of trees. Their species was more or less familiar, at least, and the smell of prey scurrying in the summer grass made him a little bit calmer. And it was getting brighter—that was a plus, definitely a plus. Stumbling along before the sun broke from the horizon hadn’t been his idea, but Udanvti made it imperative they get to AniWaya as soon as possible. He was looking forward to many, many more hours of travel.

He coughed again, scowled, wiped at his nose with his white arm. It was normal for him to have obnoxious symptoms in the morning, but the constant coughing was more annoying than his twitch. Once he could breathe without inhaling dust or pollen or whatever was in the air, however, Unatsi caught the scent of ancient wood, oak and moss, and the distinct smell of another luperci. He swallowed, forcing himself to keep moving until he saw said luperci, hugging his knees as he leaned against an oak tree.

“Oh, hello,” Unatsi burst out, standing beside a tree of his own; one set of claws dug into the bark to keep him anchored in case this wolf wanted to drag him off to cannibalize him. “Oh, um—I’m sorry,” he added quickly, gesturing to the other’s slightly curled-up form as if he had been the cause of the sorrow hanging over the stranger. “I’ll just—I’ll keep on moving now, tla udanvtedi!”

And like that the thin red wolf was behind the tree again, trying to sidle around it and keep moving out of the stranger’s view.
