” Chess?".

Asked the young X’ies looking on as the two members of his family played with their wooden carvings on a board. He didn’t quite understand the point or nature of the game, at least not yet. In time when he would grow older, the Lambda would understand that this game was a fundamental part of life and their philosophy towards it. In order to win you couldn’t just move any piece you wanted. You had to move thinking about what the opponents next move was going to be, you had to use each piece for both its strengths and its weaknesses. However, as was stated at the moment, he held no understanding of it, and so was the nature of his family that during the game they would not stop to spell it out for him. For if they did, the other would likely take advantage of their distraction , such was the way the game was played among his kind.

Instead, the young one decided that he would go out and seek the curious one. Ever since their first meeting she had proved if nothing but an interesting subject for his studies. She was also fun to be around, a strange quality that X’ies did not find in many, it was strange that he should find it in one of her family however. His mind was sharp, trained. And it was not that hers was not sharp, merely that the differences between what their trainings focused on, their interests and development were so starkly contrasted that it almost made no sense that the two would be friends. And yet, here it was. X’ies oft did wonder whether or not his father and X’yrin’s would contrive to have the two mate. X’ies held little interest in such things at the moment ( and it seemed that would not change even in adulthood) but it did make sense. His father had taken notice of the time the two spent in play together and often set them up during lessons, X’ies lessons were it seemed primarily focused on how to take a beating, though truthfully it was how to read an opponent in the heat of battle. So that you could play fast and loose with the rules of engagement.

He had to wonder if this would extend elsewhere. Though as with most things as a child, this thought was fleeting, leaving him the moment he saw a bird fly towards X’yrin’s own encampment.

Bored. A new word added to her growing compendium. She was bored with waiting. Bored with training. And most of all, she was bored with doing nothing when the downtime presented itself. She would rather be active with something, be it rolling in the fields or trying her paw at bounding on the mountain again. Just…something to expel this excess energy so that her little internal fire could find rest.

But she was ordered not to move. To sit and deal with her anxiety by her Shepard’s- her father’s command. She couldn’t even interact with X’yro, not even for a little while. Just sit on the training grounds and wait. But what was she waiting for? She was never told, nor could she focus her mind enough to ponder on it. Everything in her told her to move, to dance, she roll and play, regardless of her Shepard’s instructions. Her little round form squirmed irritably and a scowl darkened her brow as she stared out toward… nothing. She felt as if she were being punished, as if she had done something wrong in her training. But with soft, assuring tones, her father spoke the contrary to these assumptions and went on explaining that the Exultare must learn to channel their energy and create from it a calm nature. She hadn’t the slightest what it meant but eventually she found herself as she had been minutes, if not hours before.

Bored.

Sighing she brought herself to lie down eventually, propping her plump forelimbs under her chin and continued to stare out toward the encampment line. She wanted something to do. She wanted to be able to play. She wanted to have a run around with X’ies again. The boy had worked himself into a soft spoke in her heart, even if it was with barbs of insults and cold logic attached. He was always fun to be around, despite how his teachings of the Lambda seemed to interfere with their playtime. But even then they were overlooked by a sharp nip to the ear or a sloppy pummel to the side. She believed the two had become friends, as her Shepard had said. An unbreakable bond that would last eternally. Again, she had no idea what point he intended to get across, but she was glad he had allowed the two of them to play. Such a warm day would have been ideal to go running… but then the orders of her superior kept her in place. And of course…bored.

She needed an outlet… something. And when the anxiety was too much to bear, she leapt to her paws and sounded a mighty call to the wind. (More like a squeak given her size and underdeveloped cords).

It was a pigeon, X’ies liked pigeons. They were the one creature that much like him had become such a normal sight that they tended to blend into the background. The young pup thought that if these birds were capable of more than the simple thoughts in their mind then they would have made perfect Lambdas. He would have to one day learn how to communicate with the winged creatures, even if it put him through the unpleasant risk of being marked by one of them. And when he heard that squeaky call from the distance carried on the wind he knew that it was his friend. Was it that she was calling out to him? Did she smell him on the wind? It was possible, though unlikely. Curious as he was he would make his own way into their encampment towards X’yrin’s location and note just precisely what she was doing. Which appeared to be at this point in time absolutely nothing. ” Hello curious one”. Said X’ies as he approached, keeping his attitude mildly respectful towards the other members within the area.

” You seem troubled”

The young Lambda would comment as he approached. Not quite as gifted as his adult self was, he tilted his head and wandered around her for a brief moment trying to examine if she had been injured during training at some point. ” You do not seem to be injured…and yet I’m sure I heard you call out”.

Eventually she was shushed quiet by one of the caretakers that came to investigate what her howling was about. The elder female found nothing wrong with the pup and left her to her supposedly quiet training with the promise that the Shepard would return to speak to her soon.

That was just what the pup needed; another lecture from the Father of the Exultare explaining how her waiting was supposed to grant her something more than senseless boredom. But then if there was a lecture to follow her outburst, she reasoned, then perhaps it would give her something to do at last! Or at least he could explain what was so darn important about it! And these thoughts gave the pup hope as she sat back down and waited, tilting her muzzle skyward to watch the dull colored birds fly overhead to destinations unknown. She tilted her head curiously. What were those birds called again? Geons?

An ear twitched at the patter of approaching steps which in turn led to excitement when her eyes beheld the familiar form. In an instant her lesson was foregone for a chance to pounce her friend to the ground. “X’ies!” she exclaimed as though the boy were the lifeline she had been seeking. “Shepard made me sit and ‘wait’-“ she tried to explain amidst pawing for one of his ears “-but it boring. Play instead?”

Perhaps if she had remained still a little longer she would not have had to hear the cough of disapproval behind her. Her excitable bouncing stepped the instant she caught the scent of her superior so much like her own and turned ever so carefully to look up at the kind face of the Exultare Shepard- her father. Immediately her tail tucked between her legs and her little form dropped to the ground. Her eyes remained respectfully averted even as he spoke her name to get her attention, and X’ies as well in seeing the boy there.

‘Patiently waiting, are we?’

The Alpha knelt down from his staggering height then lowered himself further down to be level with the two small pups…

Respect was one thing but X’ies didn’t quite know how to react in a situation like this. He knew that his father oft discussed things concerning him with Xyrins father. However he had no idea about how to act in the presence of the man. Was he supposed be be submissive? Or was he supposed to show his true colours as one should in front of their family. As he supposed to treat him as a Shepard or was he merely t look upon him as the father of his friend. Oddly when he lowered himself down to their own stature, X’ies felt smaller than ever. The immediate knowledge that should this larger male choose his life would be forefeet. Of course, it was the same among all males that were fully grown, the pup stood no chance against them. But there was something about this one, the training that he had been putting the curious one through that just made him that its bit more careful when walking around him.

He looked from the male to his friend and ten back to the male once again. Apparently this task of sitting and waiting was given to her by her superior and whilst X’ies saw playing as something that would be much more preferable to the both of them. He thought that this would probably not be the kind of lesson that his father would want him to be showing. He looked back at his friend and then shook his head. ” If you have been told to do it, then you must obey. Perhaps Shepard will let you play soon?”. There was a hopeful, questioning glint in his voice, as if looking towards the male for guidance on the matter.

She feared not the physical wrath of her father and Shepard, but rather his voice of disapproval for her disobedience. It was both in blessing and curse etiquette kept her eyes averted less she as a pup sought to challenge her superior, for it kept her from seeing the dissapointment in his eyes as well as the glint of curiosity in seeing X'ies.

The pup pair didn't have a play date scheduled as far as anyone knew, and though his presence was not offensive, it was a little strange to see the grey pup outside of his own camp. Hopefully no one, especially her Shepard would object. Boldly, the little female inched toward her companion should she need to defend him but was stopped in her tracks by a large, watchful eye. "... sorry." The little one mumbled, knowing full well she was only getting herself onto more trouble. But instead of a stern gaze, she received a light disciplinary nip to the scruff then a swift, soothing lick to the punished area.

"It looks to be that our little Exultare's training will have to be postponed for this day. Her mind is too distracted to concentrate on her lesson..." the aged eye of the Shepard drifted from his young to the Lambda pup. "Lambda, X'ies," the elder male smiled kindly at the pup. "Perhaps you would be willing to help an elder with a task whilst you both play. A task in helping his heir..."

He sat and watched as it seemed his friend was being taught some kind of lesson. Regardless, the Shepard would then approach him and ask a request. He remained quiet and listened. He wanted X'ies to aid in teaching X'y a lesson? What kid of lesson would it be that she could ever benefit from? His lessons as far as he was aware were things that her family did not excel or indeed concentrate in at all as part of their training. Or was it simply that his mind could not yet comprehend the connection between the two? However, the fact that this " task" of his was centered around their playing made X'ies all the more curious to hear just what he had to say, what task could be completed whilst playing, and indeed what connection would it have to him?

" I shall do as you request"

He said with little thought into it, which was odd considering however in his current form, his infancy still had a grip over him. And with visible excitement he awaited both the request and the relinquishment of his friends ties so that the two could engage in gleeful amusement. No doubt X'y too would be glad to hear that she was going to be let away to play, and that thought kept him distracted from what could probably be the more important of the two issues, he had agreed to help the elder with a task concerning X'y without listening to the details of which.

A mistake he would have been chastened for in his own family. But..this wasn't his blood.

Whatever request the Shepard had in mind, it must have been an important one if he would ask for someone help. As long as she was alive she hadn’t heard her father ask assistance from anyone. He was always an able Shepard, capable to taking care of his own issues without help at all. But to ask a pup…a pup no less. What did he have in mind? Ever the curious little thing, X’yrin leaned closer into the conversation, inching by a little paw at a time as if the act would make her hear better.

“It is a task that only you as her friend will be able to do,” her Shepard continued. The large male placed a gentle hand on the young boy’s head. “Continue to be her friend and help her see reason as she grows. Help her achieve her potential and more, beyond what the Exultare can do for her. Your friendship will help the both of you learn more than what your individual families can teach you. Learn from each other, protect each other…and do not abandon the bonds you share. Do you think you can do this for me, X’ies?”

What her father had meant was lost on the female pup, but she did gather that he wanted X’ies and her to be friends. That she could definitely do! And without being told to do so! “But we are friends!” she piped up and in show of it, ran over to the Lambda pup and tackled him to the ground. “See?” With heavy paws flailing she tried to pin him down just long enough to steal one of his ears and give it a good nibble. The sounds of the Shepard’s laughter filled her ears but he did not try to stop the ‘attack’. Instead he poked his hand into the fray to gently knock both pups to the ground, laughing just the same.

What may well be referred to as a glimmer of what was to be reflected in X'ies eyes the moment the shepard spoke up. This was not a task that would be accomplished immedietly, no this was a more long term goal. However he had to wonder just what was behind the entire thing. He wanted X'ies to look out for X'yrin, ensure a bond of friendship between the two hoping that some kind of influence would rub off on her. He saw at this point even in his young mind that whilst the training for her family was required, it seemed that her father wanted some of the Lambdas ways to rub off on X'yrin. For what reason the pup was clueless, in his mind he had yet to understand that not every person in the world had their place.

To him at the moment life seemed much like the parts of an animal, each had its own individual function. He was a mind, a thinker, X'yrin was a body, a do'er. Such were the ways of things, his trail of thought was of course interupted as X'y did precisely what he had thought of, and acted, pouncing on the unsuspecting grey wolf and mercilessly nibbled at his ear.

At this point however it did occur to him that whilst each part of the body had its own function, that part would be much more useful if it was multi-functional. But that wasn't normal, was it? He swatted at X'yrin before the Shepard intervined and seemed to mock them both with a higher display of strength. " X'y and me, friends forever?....I can do that easy...". He said slightly puffed up. Totally unaware of what obsticals life would have in store come adulthood. As of yet his mind was still developing, unable to picture X'yrin beyond this moment, the playful, happy curious one.
