The day was fine for most but a little hot for the Alaskan tundra blood that flowed through Jaden’s veins. His fur wasn’t yet growing thicker for the long winter months that loomed further ahead in the year but it was still enough to have him panting as he crossed the relatively treeless hills that lead to Fort Cumberland. Once he found it and proceeded forward into the decaying buildings and stone structures he was cooled. But he felt it a good idea to stay a few hours longer than he’d planned, maybe wait out the hottest part of the day.

He thought it would be easy enough to do so. The looming stone walls were something that he’d never seen before. Unlike the rotting structures of the city this one seemed more natural. He could identify that the walls were made of stone and the steps within that he found were also cold and natural material. There were no bright colors that pealed from the walls or metal with images on it. Here and there he would find a glass window often long broken but they were few and far between. A place such as this was surely to have some useful scrap or supplies hidden within. He looked and searched and turned over rotting wooden boxes for hours.

Nothing, Nothing, and more nothing. It was a little disappointing to have made this trip in hopes of finding something valuable or useful in the odd structure only to find broken and rotting things. But the day wasn’t a total loss. He knew his way around pretty well combing through the interior of the stone barracks and returned after his fruitless searches to the tallest point of the tallest tower. It wasn’t extremely high up but farther than the Issum was used to being at about three stories. It would be a fine place for archery, he thought to himself as he looked out on the other ruined buildings and surrounding territory. But he didn’t move to draw his bow instead choosing to simply enjoy the view.

Sonje by Sie!

Since leaving Halifax a handful of rising suns ago, Sonje's decent mood had been slowly chipped away by her sudden loneliness. For whatever reason, she still kept running into Luperci, somehow even in the most remote spots she could find, but she found that she missed the socialization she'd experienced in her time spent at the dilapidated city. After many months of being on her own and only coming across others of her kind once every week or two, it was hard to recognize her inherent desire to be around others, especially since she specifically chose not to acknowledge it more often than not. She sighed, closing her eyes against the blaring sun.

She was riding Jagga now, lying stretched against the gray mare's broad back as she crossed the barren, dusty hills at an almost excruciatingly slow pace—a pace Sonje didn't mind, as the heat allotted a bit of leisure in her opinion. If there had been been any type of sheltering wilderness around her, she might have gone for a hunt, but as it were, the rolling land was pretty open and she had no choice but to listen to the sparse rumbling of her gut between the incessant clopping of Jagga's heavy hooves. She sighed again, putting her hands behind her head and letting her tail fall limply against her steed's shoulder.

Glancing down, she noticed that they were passing a trench, the first of several, and she reminded Jagga to watch her step as they went. She sat up, dropping her legs to either side of her thick mare and taking the reins again, in case she needed to direct her. Sonje admired the war place with her pale eyes, drinking in the warm air and tasting the scent of another, decently fresh. They were coming up on the tallest building when she looked up, shielding her eyes from the sun's glare as she tried to see the top of the three-story tower. She pulled on the reins sharply when she spotted the figure up there, every muscle in her body tensing. She was acutely aware of his advantage, and the fact that he could have seen her coming a mile away.

Dust settled around Jagga's hooves as she came to a stop, tossing her head irritably. "Enjoying the view?" she called up, mostly looking to gauge the other's voice for friendliness or otherwise.

Looking out on the rolling hills that seemed to stretch in every direction for a very long time, Jaden couldn’t help but feel sort of small. It was a bit more difficult to truly admire the spectacle of the world from within the trees or strolling about the slopes of the hills. Everything was just so… big from up here. Being able to see for miles had the bicolored optime wondering exactly how far he could see. What forest was marked by the trees on the horizon? How far away were the farthest hills and mountains? It truly was beautiful to behold and second in Jaden’s mind only to the comfort of the sea’s blue tides.

There was another use for this tower than a point to look out on the world. The creators of this stone structure who were now lost to time might have designed it as a look-out post. It certainly worked well as the Issum quickly became aware of something approaching from the distance. He stepped to the edge of his view point where a stone guard rail had long since crumbled off and left it dangerously rounded and squinted to get a better look at grey highlighted by a cloud of dust. The horse and rider slowly became discernible from one another. Further development of the image would suggest the stranger to be a woman. Jaden smiled to himself. Living in a pack didn’t offer much chance to see new faces and he was begging to realize just how much he enjoyed the act. He wouldn’t admit it now after so recently taking his dearly beloved as a mate but females were always more interesting than males too. So he had some expectations for this stranger.

He was looking down on her when she spoke. It was good to hear a voice for Jaden had been fearing she’d ride right past unknowingly. In that call he heard the caution often granted by one stranger to another. She wanted to know if he would bite. I am, he affirmed loud enough that she would hear him clearly, It is well worth the climb, if you can appreciate the beauty of the land. It was meant to sound like a statement but hold more meaning: an invitation and a test of his own. How she answered or proceeded would describe what interest she held in meeting and conversing with him.

Sonje by Sie!

Now, Sonje was a young woman of sound mind and body. She was smart enough, though generally suspicious, when it came to socializing—so it wasn't too surprising when she spent an extra long moment considering the man's vague invitation. The situation could have easily surmounted to a trap when she reached the top, but by scent alone she judged that they were the only two in the area at present, and she was too confident in herself to be intimidated. Still, she didn't like to think she was being goaded into anything, so (inwardly) she convinced herself that she was going up to get a bearing of her surroundings. Not because she was invited.

This in mind, she dismounted Jagga without responding and made for the steps that would lead to the man.. er, the view. Strapped to her leg was her trusty dagger, Viper, who would forcibly find the man's heart if he got out of line. Not that she expected him to, or even knew he was an alpha. She'd find out soon enough—and when she reached the tower's highest point, there he stood, his features much more striking than they had been from three stories below. Pale eyes drank him in, much taller, with lean muscles and a sharp face. His eyes, the mark of true blue, were most captivating, though she haughtily kept her own gaze averted. It didn't seem so much out of respect than it did impudence.

Her pierced ears pressed towards him, and she crossed her arms after glancing his bow and arrows. "Well, show me." She wasn't afraid, as exhibited by the suspicious narrowing of her eyes but the approach she made regardless. She came to stand near him, overlooking the wide, near-barren landscape at his invitation. She breathed in the breeze, quiet as she looked out, but it wasn't long before she glanced up at him. "I'm Sonje," she introduced languidly after a pensive moment.

It would seem this woman held some interest in pleasantries. Shortly after he called back down to her she disappeared beneath the edge of his perch. Jaden grinned to himself and looked out on the view blindly. His mind didn’t take it in once more but instead occupied itself with thoughts of this woman. She could be anyone from anywhere. Perhaps she’s a traveler from a far off land or a member of a nearby pack. Perhaps she is a canine of Salsola. The last thought put him off a bit. Why his mind had jumped to the most negative possibility he wasn’t sure and quickly shook it away as the sound of claws clicking on stone drew his attention back to the building.

He half turned to greet his invited guest as she emerged from within the stone buildings shadow. She was a bit shorter than he would have guessed before seeing her up close. He let his eyes wonder down her body for a moment and rest on the weapon she carried. A beautiful body lined with brilliant fur of unique shades. There was no doubt she was a warrior. Though youthful, her steps were graceful and body strong. Something struck him as familiar about her too. Maybe she had a bit of Alaskan blood in her? It was possible though he doubted she was in anyway full blooded tundra wolf.

Her features looked on him suspiciously but she did not hesitate to come within reach of his strong claws. So she held some self-confidence. Her request, if it could be called so courteous, put a grin on his lips that he shared with her in a slightly amused fashion. But it was only a flash before he turned away from her and to the view he offered to share. What is there to show? He was slightly enthusiastic because he found it genuinely beautiful and spread his arms as if presenting the world before them to the she-wolf. The majesty of the world itself, right here before our eyes, He too paused to look out on it once more and took in the pleasant breeze. She drew nearer and he waited for her to speak up again. Soon enough he was given a name and he would finally look to her once more where she stood next to him. Jaden Ohanzee of Sangi’lak. It’s nice to meet you Sonje.

Sonje by Sie!

He didn't feel like much of a threat, even as he towered at her side, so she found it easy to actually look out onto the land, rather than pretending to. Sonje liked to think she was somewhat of a good judge in character (even though this may have not been true at all) and his genuine interest in the landscape led her to further believe he wasn't interested in harming her. This close, she admired his broad shoulders and taut neck, decorated with a necklace of teeth too big to be canine. His opposing colors melded seamlessly with one another, and she found herself hard-pressed to dislike his characterizing scars.

Jaden Ohanzee, a name she decidedly committed to her memory—and she smiled curiously, with her eyes narrowed lightly at him, wondering in what way it was "nice" to meet her. Sonje was a prickly pear, though she supposed she could be sweet if she wanted to. She looked out into the open again, taking a full breath again as the wind brushed through her fur and mane. "Sangi'lak far from here?" she asked conversationally after a moment, glancing down at Jagga who seemed to be aimlessly wandering through the Fort's dusty terrain.

She returned her eyes to Jaden, but made sure her thoughts were as platonic as possible.

His voice was honest in saying it was pleasant to meet her because it truly was for him. He had enough confidence in his own abilities that few travelers caused him fear or nervousness. And if a stranger was going to be blunt or gruff it was only an interesting and or amusing quality. In the woman’s case it was interesting. The confidence he had noticed before made him wonder exactly how skilled the woman might be with that dagger on her thigh. Perhaps he would ask. Hopefully he wouldn’t be forced to find out first hand but she was a stranger so who could be sure what she might try for.

Her smell drifted over him just as her conversation starter did. No pack to note. Only horse and that had to be the one she rode in on. Less than half a day’s journey south-west, he squinted for a minute before pointing to the largest mountain on the horizon, at the foot of that mountain. We are a young pack… but strong. Pride put a smile on his face as he looked down on her curiously. He noticed her piercings for the first time at this distance. More interest and more questions but he stuck with the one on the tip of his tongue. Have you been traveling long? It was an assumption he thought appropriate. Nothing else he knew would explain her scent or trotting companion. He had a feeling she would correct him if it was wrong.
