lost into the weight of gravity

Colibri hesitated, standing before the closed door of a dwelling in Jordheim village. She held a bottle of wine as a goodwill offering, though she was unsure if it was really a useful gift or not. Ezra's scent led her there, though she had never purposefully visited the big male's home before. The sun was setting, cooler air drifting in with the scents of the forest and lake. She didn't want to disturb the father and son that lived there, but... well, if Ezra was home and wanted to talk, she could really use his company. He did say she could stop by any time... Nervously she fiddled with the strings of her cloak, the garment she wore to hide her shape from the eyes of the pack. She was trying to gather up the courage she needed to divulge what she had been trying so hard to conceal -- that she was expecting.

Coli's pregnancy was still largely a secret, but as her moods shifted and her body changed its shape in preparation, she began to feel less ashamed about the circumstances and more worried for the future. She wanted guidance. Her sister had promised to raise the pups if anything happened to Coli, which was a weight off her mind; now she had to consider what would happen if she lived, and they were hers to raise. Their pack was so new, their members so young, she did not have anyone experienced to turn to for advice. The only two parents she knew of were Saul and Ezra, and she had already grilled Saul for everything he knew. If Ezra was willing to share, she wanted his perspective on raising little Elias, and anything he could tell her would be helpful. She didn't want to fail them, the tiny fragile lives growing inside her. It was too much responsibility for her alone, and the thought made her tremble, struggling to swallow the lump in her throat. How did Ezra handle the loneliness? Her litter wasn't even born yet, and she felt like she was drowning.

She raised her hand and knocked lightly on the door, shuffling back several paces as she waited for it to open. She and Ezra were both quiet and melancholy souls, keeping to themselves and holding fading memories of their past. She felt a kinship with him, even if it was only through the shared pain of having loved and lost. She dreaded telling him her news, it could ruin the budding friendship between them, but she was going to be a mother now regardless if others knew or not. Enough time had passed since the initial shock that now she was a little more willing to talk about it. She drew a deep breath and slowly exhaled, trying to remain calm and not let her anxieties get the better of her. There's nothing to be afraid of, she told herself over and over as she waited, fidgeting with the bottle in her hands.

Quality time with his son had been long overdue. Eli was finally a yearling, though the Hollr couldn’t believe it. Despite his deformity the young wolf carried himself with grace and he had his own sort of confidence that made his father incredibly proud. The day had found the Rosens sprucing up their garden outside their Jordheim home. Eli had transferred lots of shrubbery from the forest and needed help replanting it. Eli stayed in his four-legged form (he had yet to shift, and was beginning to worry his father) and dug up the plants while his father carried them back in his arms on two legs. The day had been very successful, which made Ezra happy. As the sun dipped beneath the mountains Ezra knew it was time to finally call it a day.

Eli hadn’t really bothered to clean off the dirt that had collected on his rusty body during the day. Ezra hadn’t either, but at least brushed the majority of it off his paws and knees. Ezra had stayed on two legs for the sake of being lazy. The two boys had gotten into a play fight and had really started going at it when there was a knock on the door. Ezra spat out his son’s foreleg from his mouth as he got up quickly to see who the unexpected visitor was. The man hadn’t any plans or expectations for random drop-ins since Wretch left. He got off the ground and opened the door, unsure of who was behind it.

It was Coli! She held something in her shaky hands, and she looked worse for wear. And, well, pregnant. Ezra had been so wrapped up in his own life that he hadn’t had time to see her since the attack, so he felt double guilt that the chocolate female had washed up on his doorstep. Ezra gaped at her belly stupidly, unsure of what to say other than making a hand motion, ushering her inside. Eli barked a friendly hello from the ground, wagging his tail furiously. Coli, was all the male said, his disbelief still taking over most of his mental capacity. What a surprise, He felt like an idiot for saying that, but he couldn’t think of much else. Eli launched himself at Coli, rubbing her legs in a cat-like fashion, happy to see another pack mate at his residence.

lost into the weight of gravity

The door swung open, illuminating Ezra Rosen towering over her. Coli's eyes fluttered, taking in his size; she had seen his two-legged form before, but not from up close, being more accustomed to seeing the husky hybrid on all fours. Had he always had that scar across his eye? Her anxious gaze dropped when she heard the excited bark -- Eli was cheerfully waving his tail, excited to see her. There was soil in his fur, a familiar scent to the gardener. She waved to the youth, a flicker of warm recognition crossing her countenance. She still could not find her voice, though.

Coli stepped gingerly through the door as she was beckoned, self-consciously pulling it shut behind her. She didn't venture to this part of Jordheim often, and wasn't sure who Ezra's neighbors were, if he had any. She liked that her house was rather isolated from the rest of the village; it remained quiet and she had not had any surprise visitors. Of course, that was what she was perpetrating right now, interrupting their father-son time for her own selfish reasons. Guilt tugged in her chest, which she struggled to ignore. The Rosens had invited her in, after all, her melancholy presence couldn't be that much of a burden.

She undid the cloak strings, pulling the garment from her shoulders and folding it neatly over her arm. She felt very bare, exposing the unwanted curves of her pregnant body in plain sight, but Ezra had already seen what he needed to -- the recognition and shock had been obvious in his mismatched irises. She didn't have to hide from him anymore, even if she desperately wanted to. Did he realize yet where they came from, whose pups they were? He would figure it out soon enough. "Hey, Ezra," she said weakly, trying to smile at his fumbled greeting. "I... I hope I'm not intruding... I, uh, brought a gift," she faltered, holding the bottle of wine out for his inspection. She had found the cache of old bottles at the vineyard, and knew Saul had been giving them as gifts to the newer members of their pack. She hoped the Virding wouldn't mind that she reallocated one -- it might make the conversation easier.

A furry warmth pressed against her legs, and Coli blinked in surprise; Eli was a very friendly little fellow, wasn't he! "Did you have fun today, Eli?" she asked gently, nodding towards the dirt accumulated in his russet-marked pelt. Most days she wore the same badge -- soil on her knees, smudged on her nose and fingers, and so forth. Lately it was getting harder to kneel and rise so many times during the day, so she was forced to cut back her routine. The youth seemed so happy and vibrant -- he was always so animated whenever she saw him. Ezra was a good father, shielding the boy from tragedy and hardship. She wondered if she would be able to do the same, to set aside her own issues for the sake of children's innocence. It seemed an insurmountable task.

As soon as Ezra saw the bottle, he knew what was going on. The pregnancy, the attack, it all clicked. Ezra’s surprised countenance was replaced with a warm, understanding one. The wise wolf-dog looked at his friend intently, waving away her words with a simple, airy hand gesture. No, my dear, you are always welcome here, besides, we were about to have some dinner and we would love it if you could join us. That wine will go well with the ducks we have in the back, he said, proud of his catch.

The snare he had learned to make to catch waterfowl was his one project this summer. The boys had started it back when the days were exhaustingly hot and they spent most of their days by the lake to stay cool. Their double husky coats made the summer a bit of a nuisance. The pond had been teeming with ducks, but after they created the tool the population had taken quite a hit. It had been Eli’s idea initially, but Ezra designed and perfected it. Wild turkey and duck had become their new favorite sort of cuisine as of late. It helped a lot with the lean days of summer when the game was harder to catch as the deer were in their prime and the wolves didn’t have the hunting advantage of the snow. Ezra said One second, happily and walked outside to the yard where the ducks were leaning against the house.

In the past two days the boys had caught four, which they had stockpiled greedily. Ezra thought now was as good of a time as any to indulge, and Coli’s appearance made it all the better. He quickly returned to his living room with his prize in one hand and presented neatly on the table. Eli looked at the food greedily.

Please, sit down my friend, make yourself at home. Ezra motioned to the incredibly comfortable couch he had fashioned for himself. Eli said that Barry’s couch was more comfortable but Ezra knew better. He looked at his friend warmly, wondering how the evening was going to go down. He hoped that whatever obvious trouble the girl was in would pass soon, or that he could give her good advice.

Eli had bounded onto the couch immediately after he had embraced Colibri. His favorite spot was on the far right corner, which was where he had his various assortment of bones that he was currently chewing. The quiet boy looked at the chocolate woman and smiled as she spoke to him, his tail still going a mile a minute. I did! Dad and I added shrubs to the garden out front. the yearling said with a grin, glad to have more company. It's good to see you, Eli added after a moment, truly meaning it. He hadn’t seen Teme in a few days and was itching for someone new to hang out with. He was hoping for an interesting evening.

lost into the weight of gravity

"Oh, you're having dinner? I, I'm sorry for the bad timing," Coli mumbled, shuffling her feet awkwardly. Not only was she interrupting them, but now she was freeloading their hard-earned rations. She couldn't deny her hunger, though, and it could be rude if she tried to back out now. "I've never had duck before," she added meekly, ears falling back against her mane. "How did you manage to catch them?" Ezra didn't seem the sort to hunt with arrows the way her niece Eclipse did, but it was difficult to catch birds in general without some sort of tool. Catching prey had become quite challenging for her, and she was welcome to suggestions now that she could not shift.

Ezra vanished around the corner, and Coli moved to the simple wooden table, placing the cloak and the wine bottle down. She dug her claw into the bottle's cork and pulled it free with some effort, exposing the aged alcohol to fresh air for the first time since it was sealed away. She wondered if Eli would be allowed to have some; she had to keep reminding herself that he was older than he looked, with his small stature and playful attitude. He did have an adult rank in the pack, just like Temeraire who was now living alone, so she should expect him to have all the same privileges. Still, there were some topics she wasn't sure she should voice with Eli in the room -- did he even know where babies came from? Her hand strayed to the foreign bulge in her stomach, trying to imagine herself as part of a loving family like this one, instead of the third wheel she was now.

The Rosen patriarch returned with the waterfowl in tow, ushering her to take a seat on the makeshift furniture. Hesitantly, Coli sat in the middle, sinking into the pile of blankets and cushions. It was indeed comfortable, and she breathed a sigh of relief to be off her feet. The weight she had gained thus far made her ankles rather achy and swollen when she insisted on walking all day. She felt she didn't have the luxury of relaxing at home, she needed to hunt for herself and work at the communal herb garden to stay useful, regardless of how her body protested. She had to admit, though, it was hard to say no to an evening like this, reclining peacefully with the promise of a full stomach for once. "You boys have such a lovely place," she said with a smile, gazing around her at the wide-open house with its amenities. She suspected Ezra made the furniture himself, and was impressed with his knack for woodworking. "You're really lucky," she added more softly, echoing the sentiment she had expressed in the late springtime when they spoke atop the hills. They made it look so easy, these two.

Eli was perched on the far corner of the couch, which seemed to be his usual spot judging by the well-chewed stockpile of bones. Coli's gaze lingered on his smiling face, beaming happiness rivaled only by his wagging tail. He was adorable, and she found herself wanting to take care of him in that inexplicably maternal way she felt towards youngsters. "It's good to see you too, sweetie. You'll have to show me your garden sometime, I'd love to see," she said earnestly, genuinely interested. She had been too distraught to pay heed to her surroundings when she arrived at their doorstep, and it was getting dark out anyway. "Do you have a raspberry bush? I have a little one at my place, I can give you a cutting," she offered. It was a little late in the season, but the shrubs were hardy and would be back for the next year. She was always happy to share her plants with others who were interested.
