Adonia didn't see his teeth bared, and so that didn't make her feel the need to defend herself against Tharin, who she had felt was her friend. Now he was suddenly pulling rank on her and she felt confused by why he felt the need to do that to her. She wasn't challenging him and she wasn't hurting anything. He came to her and toward himself over her. Her tail lowered tucking and her eyes widen while her head craned up while her body lowered more to the ground. A high pinched whine came from her, a slight rumble under it. She didn't like the feeling of being forced to submit to him and she was getting close to snapping and biting at him. She wasn't going to lick him, licking was reserved for affection and only as appeasement to the alpha. She licked her nose nervously while he lips twitched fighting to stay down.

Adonia was getting close to rolling over onto her back, but if he insisted on more she would bite at him, she felt it. She continued to whine trying to get him to back off. It made her very uncomfortable to have him doing this to her. But she didn't speak, she wouldn't speak. She let her body do all the talking.

Tension filled the air as Tharin asserted his dominance, frame proud and confident. Adonia's own frame shrunk down, submissive in it's nature. The whines appeased him somewhat, tail slowly wagging. She was nervous, he could tell that, but he wasn't going to let her get away with her acts. Satisfied that the submission was enough Tharin stepped back once more, body relaxing from the taut position that it had held previously.

For him, the issue was resolved. The world was righted, and now he could take his time investigating the book that Adonia had wished to show to him. Tail wagging he sniffed at the page, taking in the odd inky scent that lingered in the paper. It was a little musty. The pictures were highly entertaining. You say this book tells of birds? He wasn't too sure how it could do that. While he could see birds in the book, they weren't moving around, or doing anything that would let him know anything about them.

He finally backed away and Adonia was no longer in the mood to show him about the book. He had took her mind from the book with how he had forced her to submit and she was feeling it was because she had relaxed. She didn't see him as being higher than her, she really didn't. To her they were both in the same pack and both under Zalen. Now he taught her otherwise. They were no longer on the same level.

Tharin moved from her to the book as if nothing was wrong, as if he did his job and it was now time to go back to pleasantries. Her ears were still back and she came sleeking over toward the book, tail still tucked tightly to her and she felt defeated and humiliated by him. Adonia didn't feel like she could be herself now. "Yes..you have to read it to learn about the birds.." her voice was void of any lightness. She just spoke frank and without excitement. She gave him the information he wanted, and there was no more she wanted to do now. Adonia was now in the mood to go back to Ookami, who never forced her to submit or anything humiliating.

She sat despite the feelings. Her eyes looked to the book, "There are words written in the book.." She looked at the page that was up. It was about macaws. [B}"...like..this page, it says this bird here is called a military macaw. They are large parrot and a medium sized member of the macaw genus. Native to Mexico, Brazil, Boliva, and South America."[/B] She glanced up, not daring to look much into his face.

Read? Tharin tried to picture the action. Element had said that the books communicated without sound. Was reading the word to describe interpreting the silent signals? The book was still though. How could he draw knowledge from it as the cat did? Nodding his head he stared hard at the book, trying to make it tell him something. He growled a little at it, but still nothing happened. Puzzled he looked over to Adonia, waiting for her to explain how it worked.

Her quiet voice spoke out, discussing what was there. Tilting his head he tried to see what she was seeing, but there was nothing there that told him what she was saying. He studied the colorful bird, wondering where those places that she'd mentioned were. Not in the north, he could say that much. Such a colorful bird would have been spotted for miles against the snow, and eaten. Have you seen this macaw? Could he find one? Noticing the awkwardness in her frame he tilted his head. What was wrong?

The more her mind focused on the book and less on what had just occurred between her and her supposed friend her mind began to forgive it. His question almost made her laugh, but she simply smiled at him warmly, her body still low and tail coming from being tucked, "No, I've never been to any of those locations. I've only been from Halifax to up here...other than when I lived in Greece." She then looked down to the picture, it was a very beautiful bird. With a slide of her paw she came to a page with a large amount of typed out paragraphs, a small picture in the left center of the page of two other macaw species. "Oh, well I guess the macaw as several different sub-species." She laid down, her tail wagging as she began to learn more about this type of bird. Her paw lifted to point out the area she was reading. "Macaws eat a variety of foods including fruits, palm fruits, nuts, seeds, leaves, flowers, and stems." She then moved her paw to the small text beneath the picture and read it, "From left to right; Scarlet Macaw, Blue and Yellow Macaw, and Military Macaw." Her eyes looked over the picture before she glanced down at more of the text.

These birds were beautiful. She glanced up to him with a brightness in her eyes, "..well, there...that's a book. Any other questions about books?"

It was sliding from her already, so it must not have been anything major. Perhaps she had simply felt foolish for challenging him in such a way, and didn't realize that she was already forgiven. That was the way it was for him. Living wholly in the present, trying not to look back on the past. At times it still haunted him, remembering Akira's death, and the pack he had failed, but mistakes such as the one Adonia had made meant nothing to him, already put behind him.

Greece? What was Greece? A pack? Thinking carefully he remembered the cat saying he lived in Halifax, so that had to be a place somewhere with many of these books. A great place for learning. Perhaps one day he would go there. Not that he could gain knowledge from something he couldn't understand. Why could she understand the book and he couldn't? Perhaps if he tried harder. Are they all with pictures and birds? Where could a macaw be found? He wanted to catch one now, and bring back to Adonia the colorful feathers.

She couldn't tell if he understood anything about the words, was he unable to see them? She wasn't sure, but when he asked about books, asking about their pictures and the birds. She gave a warm smile, "No, there are a lot of books, I'm talking in the billions, out there. Not many are about books, many are merely folk tales, or made up stories of adventure, romance, horror, and comedy. Then there are more educational books that contain no pictures, just words. A written language....like...this one here. " She leaned over and grabbed the dictionary that wasn't too far away. Picking it up she placed it over the encyclopedia and flipped it open. There were tiny printing of words all over it. Her eyes glanced up to him trying to see if he could see it. She knew he probably didn't understand it, but it was there.

"...all of those little black markings on the page are words. They tell many things. In this book it's defining the meaning of words. In the encyclopedia they were telling of birds." She then moved away and went to the dirt at the entrance of her cave. "...here, let me write out a letter for you. " With her paw she dug her paw in making a capital and a lower case 'a'. "That is a very common letter used in writing. It is also a word and a letter used within other words. It's called 'a'. It's used a lot of time in our spoken speech...these books hold a written speech..that's how I and that cat was able to bring out information. It's like the book is speaking, but it isn't. It's not alive, its an object.. inanimate like the rocks, trees, and such. However, with the language written within, the book can become alive, it can become an adventure. " Her eyes looked at him wondering if he could understand it now.

Billions? How much was billions? Tharin tried to picture how many there were. There couldn't be as many books as there were caribou, who could flood the entire arctic when they traveled through it. Perhaps half as many. He listened as she spoke, sharing what kind of books there were. A way to store knowledge that was usually passed by word of mouth. Incredible! He had never thought to do such a thing. He'd never thought he'd need to, his entire world contained by his pack.

He stared at the new book. This one contained no pictures, just more black scribbles than he could count. Nodding he tried to absorb understanding from the scribbles. It would be easier if it had a smell. Tharin could learn plenty from a scent. Staring at the two large dirt marks he sniffed at them. Her last words confused the wolf, the large male stepping back and shaking his head. I'll just have to believe you.

It was sort of frustrating seeing his confusion. Why he couldn't understand this was possibly because he was too much of a wolf. Without the disease coursing through him his mind was only locked in instinct while Adonia's mind was opened and able to ignore instincts and go with more complex thoughts. Like using fire and tools like bows and arrows to catch prey. Still, she appreciated him. Knowing a canine that was very close to her ancestors was a blessing to her. He was a rarity anymore. She gave Tharin a warm smile and trotted shyly up to him, "..yeah, it's a lot of information..complex information to learn.." She continued to smile at him. He was a great friend and pack mate. Licking his chin before giving him a soft nuzzle she then backed away. "...well I'm going to go check on Ookami..thank you for spending time with me Tharin. I'm glad you're okay.." She gave him a soft whine and again gave him a soft nuzzle and lick.
