Dated 4 days after Keldava finds Devini

Propped up on her elbows and letting the last says of the half setting sun sink into her dark fur, Keldava stared at the kitten she had unwittingly acquired and wondered what the hell she was going to do. The kitten was a handsome looking thing and Keldava couldn’t help but take a moment to admire her, dark black, bright orange and pure white colouring all mingling in a dappled pattern which in the setting sun seemed to almost glow in some places and absorb the light in others. Still as handsome as the kitten was that didn’t change the fact that Keldava had absolutely no clue how to care for a young cat.

Oh, Levent had told her the basics, what to feed her, how to check that she was healthy and such but there was a big difference between raising a baby animal healthy and raising it properly and Keldava was worried she was going to fuck something up with the cat.

With a sigh she turned her attention back to it. The kitten was in the same place as before, curled up tightly in a ball. She was a timid thing, which was to be expected considering that her mother and siblings had been torn apart in front of her just days ago. Hopefully the cat’s youth would help her adjust quicker as she grew but for now she seemed to spend all her time curled up in a scared little ball, barely moving to eat or drink without prompting. Gazing sadly at the kitten Keldava pushed herself up into a cross legged position, picking her up gently and placing her in Keldava’s lap.

The kitten mewled, a scared sound, but she also seemed to recognise Keldava’s scent somewhat as she uncurled slightly, her head emerging from where it had been tucked against her stomach to reveal the kitten’s most striking feature, the one that Keldava had named her for. In the right light the kitten’s eyes could be taken for little emeralds; they were primarily a deep, vivid green shot through with streaks of lighter green and, here and there around the edges, white.

Unable to think of a name in normal language Keldava had resorted to her family’s tongue, Svinka, to name the kitten. Devinitka, the word for emerald, was an obvious choice to her but it sounded to long so she had gone for a shortened version; Devini. Keldava being Keldava she had started shortening that even further on occasion, sometimes referring to the little kitten as Vini. Either way Devini had no protests over her name and was starting to respond to it.

Wanted or not, prepared for or not Keldava couldn’t abandon Devini now; her mother was dead and her father nowhere to be seen, like it or not Keldava was all that the little kitten had. Smiling at the little bundle of fur Keldava half unsheathed her claws and began tickling Vini under the chin, her smile growing wider as the easily distracted kitten started to purr at her attentions.

Smile

He had taken more of a liking to the forested areas rather than his normally gray and stone home that he resided in most of the time. The forest was softer, and yet louder - birds and animals of all kinds sang all day in the thick woods, and at night, the sounds only grew as crickets and cicadas contributed to nature's chorus.

And yet, today, a strange sound that Element did not often hear, and had not heard since he himself was a kitten, joined in the sounds - the soft mewling of a young cat. He followed the sounds, and began to taste the air - there was nothing that indicated a mother or father cat, and only the scent of a kitten could be smelled, along with the typical scents of Luperci that littered the lands. He tracked the scent down, hearing the mewls grow louder and louder, until he looked up and saw the source of the innocent sounds.

It was indeed a kitten - a calico, from the looks of it - and there was indeed a canine with it. Rather than tormenting the small kitten, however, the Luperci seemed to be stroking it underneath the chin, which the young feline seemed to rather like. Element emerged from the shadows and looked at the small kitten. "Mrrow," he meowed simply to the kitten, moving his body in such a way that conveyed a simply greeting in Low Speech, accompanied by his soothing meow.

Keldava typically was very aware of her surroundings but with Devini occupying her attentions she didn’t notice the approaching creature till if was very close. Keldava started a little and Devini shrunk into her lap, curling up into the hollow made by her crossed legs, though this reaction from more from the cue given by Keldava’s reaction than actual fear.

Keldava narrowed her eyes ar the approaching cat, her maimed hand hovering protectively over Devini while the other quietly unsheathed it’s claws. She didn’t react beyond that though and allowed the cat to approach, meowing as he did so. Devini stuck her head over Keldava’s leg curiously, letting out a meow that sounded somewhat like a much more high pitched version of the cat’s own.

Keldava cocked her head to the side as she looked at the black cat; something seemed familiar about him and as she was trying to puzzle it out, suddenly a half formed memory of a black cat who could speak the tongue of wolves shot into the forefront of her mind. ”Have I met you before?” she asked the cat slowly. If he spoke or even understood her there was a good chance that he was the same cat – there couldn’t be that many black furred green eyed talking cats around – and if not, then she wasn’t particularly bothered about embarrassing herself in front of a cat.

Element cocked his head, his ears erect as the small kitten meowed back at him, curiously poking its head from underneath its canine companion's arm. It did not seem that the canine was harming the kitten; rather, she seemed to be protecting her, hovering her arm over the kitten in a protective manner.

He looked up at the strangely colored canine, vague recognition sparking in his eyes; he had been transfixed on the kitten rather than the canine. However, now that he got a good look at her, he did recognize her.. she was Keldava, a canine from one of the packs whose name he could never remember.

"Keldava?" he asked, sitting and coiling his tail around his paws. "Fancy seeing you here! And with a new friend I see."

Keldava blinked dumbly when the cat confirmed that they had met before, now wracking her memories for his name. Keldava’s meeting with the feline had been so brief that she hadn’t even bothered to give him a nickname; something unusual for her but also annoying, as she typically remembered the nicknames she created better than actual names. ”Element, is that right?” she questioned, head cocked to one side. She thought that was right and gave a very quiet, happy woof, ”Good to see you.” she said happily.”

Apparently emboldened by Keldava’s happy response to the older cat’s arrival Devini moved forwards and tumbled down off Keldava’s knee, landing with a quiet “oof” before making her way over towards Element, her movements cautious and eyes wide in wonder. ”Yeah.” Keldava said in response to Element mentioning Devini, ”She’s called Devini. Or Vini, or Devinitka; she doesn’t really seem to care.” Keldava paused awkwardly for a moment, ”It means emerald, for her eyes.” she explained, ”I don’t think she even really understands the concept of a name yet, never mind telling me hers. I found her a few days ago, I was out hunting and found a cougar attacking something. It killed the rest of her family.” Keldava’s ears drooped in sadness. While she was starting to enjoy Devini’s company, the fact that the kitten’s family had died in the event that brought them together was sad.
