It was amazing how much the presence of a small feline on her shoulder helped Keldava over her nervousness. If anything actually happened then Devini would be worse than useless – Keldava wouldn’t be able to fight properly while worrying about her safety – but the kitten’s presence still made Keldava feel better and for the first time in a while she was able to leave Arte’s territory without even a hint of worry in her mind.

Her sword also helped there. Keldava had gone without her weapons for the most part but had attached the sword and its scabbard onto her belt more to get used to it’s weight on her hip than because it would actually be useful – her hand still hadn’t healed enough to let her use a knife for anything other than gentle cutting, never mind something as heavy as her sword, Keldava had barely drawn it since getting it. Still to a casual glance her scarred hand still looked fully operational and between the full sized sword on her left hip and the knife on her right she was fairly obviously armed, enough to scare off any casual attacker looking for easy prey she hoped.

It did Keldava good to get out of the territory. Lately she had been restless and angry; every little thing that her hand prevented her from doing made her more angry towards Jace, every time she looked in a mirror and saw the scar on her face. She wanted someone to talk to, to rant and rave at and get her anger out but she felt awkward talking to the adults about such and the only Luperci she knew her age were her siblings, none of which she wanted to upset more by subjecting them to her rantings. Devini was no good to talk to; while she knew the kitten could grow up intelligent and even speak high speech for the moment she seemed to barely understand any of Keldava’s words, responding more to her tone and actions.

Devini mewled insistently and Keldava realised she had been staring off into space for some time and Devini had started chewing on her ear to get her attention. Grinning playfully she gently flicked the young cat across one of her own ears; small and pointy unlike Keldava’s which were long and flopped over half way up. The small, multicoloured cat – Calico she had learnt was the name for Devini’s colouring – was perched on Keldava’s shoulder, tiny claws digging into her fur to keep her steady. Keldava didn’t know much about feline life cycle but she could easily tell that her newfound companion was stil young and not fully grown; she could barely keep up with Keldava when she was walking slowly, never mind the quick pace that Keldava kept when wandering the woods, so she preferred to ride on her shoulder.

An odd scent caught Keldava’s attention and she paused for a moment. The scent that had caught at her nose was faint but familiar, though Keldava couldn’t place it for the life of her. Curiously she bent down carefully and rooted through the grass. Her searching revealed some dried out flowers, arrayed in an obviously artificial pattern. Keldava gazed at the flowers curiously, twirling one between her fingers and watching as the withered petals dropped off the stem.

So much had happened since he has last seen his beloved, though Heiro made a point of continuously leaving bouquets of flowers within the woods where they had first met. Keldava probably had no idea how much Hei was obsessing over her from their first meeting, but after awhile, Buddy had him convinced that he was in love. And why wouldn’t he be? She was beautiful and breathtaking, standing a good 4 to 5 inches taller than him when he’d first spotted her near the stagnant pool within the woods. This was where he returned almost every other day to leave his arrangements of plants that explained his feelings for the Arte woman in the language of flowers. This was a new hobby he had picked up in the past two months. He had learned everything he could about flowers and herbs, hunting and trapping, weapons and fighting, and more recently he’d started perfecting the art of carpentry and leatherworking with his father.

Life was good though he felt he hadn’t seen site of Kel in ages, his spirits could not be diminished. He knew he loved her even when he found his flowers to be wilting or drying out in different phases of decay, she’d obviously hadn’t found them yet or didn’t understand they were tokens of his affection for her. No matter, he kept at his extravagant displays of love, counting down the days for when he’d finally enter the adult ranks of the court and be able to seek out Keldava on his own. For now he had taken it upon himself to learn everything he could, perfect his speech and writing, and take care of his father while he healed from the attack that would cripple him the rest of his life. Heiro was becoming a renaissance man of the sorts. Gone were the days of his childish lisps and troubles with “th” words. The husky adolescent was shedding baby fat and shaping up to be a handsome lad. Now about 4 inches taller, it was apparent he wasn’t done with growing anytime soon.

Yet growing pains also brought out new personalities within the blue eyed hybrid. Celeste was a voice within his head and the first entity that he wasn’t able to see as his mind didn’t project her as a playmate. This sultry woman whispered ideals about sex and intimacy to the oreo colored boy, filling his mind with dreams that troubled him but at the same time felt like ecstasy. He didn’t know how to explain it, but suddenly Heiro was attracted to a pretty or handsome face more so than he was when he was younger. Keldava of course was out of this category as she was above the rest. His feelings for her were pure, most of the time, and Heiro would not let Celeste sully her memory.

Then there was Nox, a true entity of evil and night and though Ro still hung around, the black wolf’s antics and “childish” pranks were nothing compared to the sinister and sadistic suggestions of the raven. Nox had appeared to Heiro a month ago and had the hybrid convinced that he was some sort of spirit guide. Everything he instructed Hei to do was in preparation of becoming an adult. So, the young boy did all he could to impress his raven friend, in hopes he’d grow up to be the best man he could be, even if that meant drowning or sacrificing animals for a greater cause. With Niro out of commision, the slow process of his disappearing birds seemed to go unnoticed.

Daisies and asters for my one true love, Heiro sang to himself as he picked the flowers on his way into the woods between Arte and the court. It was his second trip this week, but something in the autumnal air had the male excited. He had a feeling he’d finally be seeing Kel again today or at least catching a moment of free time from his “friends”. He walked confidently into the dark forest, twirling his bouquet and humming a song under his breath. Getting closer to where he had last seen her, he caught a familiar scent in his nares. A grin spread across his face, as he crept closer. There she was, his beauty, his queen, Keldava. They were violets for you, he said softly, not wanting to startle her as his ice eyes roved over her body, but he forgot about his message of “faithfulness” and the presence of the kitten when he noticed the marks on her hands and face. Keldava, what...what happened my--m’lady his voice broke off before he could claim her as his love. Of all the books he read, he knew he needed to remain a gentleman as he swept forward and lowered himself into a bow.

The smell of the withered flower was faint and Keldava’s nose easily detected the scent of a canine approaching her despite it’s presence. At first her hackles rose and she started to growl but then the wind shifted and the scent was blown stronger into her face, strong enough that she could recognise it as someone familiar. Sure enough Blue soon appeared, following his scent out of the trees, footsteps marking his progress. Keldava smirked lightly at his attempts to sneak up on her – it had been a long time since anyone or anything had managed that, hunting so often had honed her senses – and without turning to face him, called out, ”Being awful quiet there Blue, girl might think you were trying to creep up on her.” The tone was lighter and happier than she had been for quite a while, her mood temporarily lifted at the presence of a friendly face.

Blue had certainly changed since the last time Keldava had seen him. Before he had been shrimpy, now he was only a fraction smaller than her and in possession of a body fast becoming that of an adult. Blue’s wandering eyes weren’t noticed as Keldava was too busy doing pretty much the same thing – though her reasons were more for curiosity at how he had changed than anything else. She found her voice when Blue spoke, telling her he had left the flowers for her. ”Umm, thanks.” she said uncertainly, not really getting the point of giving someone plants that had no use as a gift, but appreciating the thought anyway. On her shoulder Devini dropped the petal she had been trying to eat and peered curiously at Blue, letting out a squeak in a tone that Keldava had come to understand as “What the hell is that?”, though doubtless the literal translation was less crude than Keldava’s.

Keldava’s mood soured when Blue noticed her scars – it had been foolish to hope he hadn’t, Keldava wasn’t blind and was well aware he was interested in her body, just too naïve to realise WHAT him being interested in her body meant – but having to talk about it still soured what had been turning into a good mood. ”My mother.” she said in a clipped voice. Normally the sight of Blue bowing and talking in that odd, formal tone would have amused her but now it barely made an impact.

He hadn’t meant to catch her off guard, but when Keldava’s nickname hit his ears, the hybrid couldn’t help himself but smile radiantly at her. Blue, he repeated in his head, liking the sound of it and knowing full well it was because of his eyes. His mother loved them and often reminded him of their hue telling him that they changed in color sometimes, going from light to dark seemingly at random. She felt they were special...magical maybe, little did they know it was a clear indication of unwanted company. Sorry, he blurted, hoping his practiced stealth hadn’t truly upset her, but then she went ahead to thank him for the flowers.

Hei could hear the tone of misunderstanding in her voice, but he didn’t take it offensively. He merely nodded, not many understood the depths and message of flowers and flora as he did, but to each their own. He was aware his little hobby was a practiced affair in what the humans called the Victorian era and though he prided himself on this unique knowledge, he knew not everyone felt so warmly about their predecessors or their day to day actions. Heiro laughed at the kitten’s sudden expletive, finally noticing its presence and murmuring to himself along the lines of “good thing that’s not poisonous.” Yet his dopey smile faltered when Keldava’s mood changed once more, obviously her physical response to his noticing her scars.

Questions whirled about his head while he studied her with softer eyes. Nothing could make her ugly in his eyes and though their first meeting had been brief, somehow the multi colored girl had made a lasting impression on him. Something about her kept him up at night, made him collect the flowers he so carefully gathered and arranged, and like a love struck puppy, Heiro had returned to this spot frequently throughout the weeks following. Buddy called it a fling, or some childish infatuation, but Heiro had a feeling the ethereal wolf was simply jealous of his emotions towards the Arte girl and nothing more. Kel’s confession caught him off guard. How could one’s mother do such a thing? He stopped himself before he could say so, squelching the anger rising up his body.

This was obviously something that deeply disturbed her and Heiro knew not to pry unless she was ready to share. Well...if it’s any consolation, I still think you’re beautiful as ever and...and if you want to talk about it, I’m all ears, he said quickly in one breath, hoping his own confession wasn’t too much.

Keldava blinked in shock, her mouth frozen half open as though she had meant to say something in return. After a moment her mind managed to process the words but even then all she could manage was to splutter and start, her cheeks burning beneath her fur.. ”I.. but, I…er, Beautiful. Me?” her stammering was accompanied by Keldava twirling her fingers together, though she practically tore them apart when she realised what she was doing. She shook her head lightly, as though to clear water from her fur, and seemed slightly more together for it, ”I… well, thank you. You think I’m beautiful, really?” Keldava was still confused and shocked but there was a distinctly happy and appreciative undertone to her voice; like someone who knew they had been complemented but not how – only Keldava did know how she had been complimented, just not why.

Beautiful wasn’t a word that Keldava had ever attributed to herself. It wasn’t that she didn’t like how she looked, she did, but Keldava’s appreciation of herself was more to do with being rugged and strong in her appearance. Her body was growing to become attractive as Keldava fleshed out and grew but she still didn’t understand those particulars of attraction; to Keldava beautiful was about having smooth fur and a pretty looking face, like Gina. Even before she had been scarred Keldava’s face had always been somewhat heavier than her sister’s and cured with half-cast ears. She wouldn’t have called herself beautiful before her mother had sliced her face open, so it was shocking to hear it afterwards.

Still as much as she would like to dwell on the unexpected compliment there was the other part of what he had said, ”I… I dunno. Been thinking about it enough recently, don’ really want to talk about it.” She was quiet for a moment before talking again, her next words barely above a whisper, ”I just feel so angry at her. I know why she did it, why she snapped like that and would’a probably done the same but I’m still angry.” Keldava’s voice was small and sad; with the shock her brain had gone through she was actually thinking about what had happened with Jace and she didn’t want to. It was easier to stay angry, stick with her knee jerk emotions rather than think hard about someone who had been practically absent in her life since the incident.

Heiro’s handsome features broke into a boyish grin. He could see his confession of Keldava’s beauty had completely taken her off guard and somehow, her flustered state made her even more appealing. His own skin burned beneath the swathe of ebony and ice upon his cheeks, Hei was beyond smitten. He kicked around damp loam with his right foot and stared sheepishly at the ground, fighting off the strong urge to erupt into laughter while the Arte girl struggled with words. This was what she reduced him to, a blithering fool with a hummingbird heartbeat ready to pound out of his chest. He managed a little bravery when she spoke up once more, the girly happiness in her voice apparent to his highly focused ears.

His head snapped up to assure her of his words full heartedly, the sick feeling of shyness gone now. Oh yes, how could I think differently? He reached out to grab her hands, but thought better of it. He couldn’t come on too strong, he’d only scare her away. Patience and respect, this was what every woman deserved. Instead he completed the movement by gesturing their surroundings, Nothing can change that. His thoughts and sentiments for Kel were finalized. He was falling hard, but he’d take his time. She was someone to be cherished, loved, and protected from the evils in the world, how ironic.

Hei nodded gently, knowing that whatever happened would take some time to get over. He allowed her a moment to her thoughts, simply happy she hadn’t banished him or made him leave after his flatterings. Kel’s soft voice floated to his ears and the Catori’s eyebrows furrowed. He knew his own mother had her off days, but he never felt like he was actually in danger with her. To be in a home where your own flesh and blood could suddenly turn on you made a knot begin to form in his stomach. I don’t understand, nobody should’ve hurt you...especially your mother, he said, his voice a bit gravely with the growing snarl in his throat. He unclenched the fists that had balled up at his sides.

You could always stay with my family...I mean if its unsafe in your home,he suggested, the darkness that had threatened ebbing back. Somewhere Buddy thrashed about, angry that someone had damaged his possession. She’s mine, a chilling thought rushed through his head and Buddy’s antics ceased. Heiro needed to protect Keldava from any future harm, she was hands off.

Keldava flinched at the anger coming from Blue, even though it wasn’t directed at her she hadn’t seen Blue angry before and it was odd, ”I… she was pregnant. We wouldn’t leave her alone, wanted to be near her but she wanted us to leave.” Keldava’s voice was weak despite the protests, unsure. Should she be blaming Jace? Shouldn’t she? When she didn’t even know her own thoughts and feelings except that she was angry with her mother, it was hard to defend her to someone who didn’t even know her, especially when Keldava wasn’t sure if she should be defending her. Devini pawed at her shoulder, mewling in a tone that Keldava thought was supposed to be comforting as she sensed her companion’s distress.

Blue’s next statement was something she could respond to without falling apart at least. ”’m fine. I moved out, so did my brothers an sisters. Thanks for the offer though Blue.” she offered him a somewhat shaky smile, trying to reign in her emotions. ”Enough about me, how’ve you been?” she asked, her voice still a bit shaky and nervous as she tried to change the subject.
