Never made it as a wise man

12th September

The sun was weaker now, in the cool of the early evening. She was thankful for it, here eyes still hadn't adjusted to the brightness after being locked inside for so long. The skeletal looking woman was surrounded by the new children she had birthed and yet she held no satisfaction, none at all. Her family was in tatters, ruins and she stared sadly out at Thornberry around her. No life to her eyes, no light in her at all. She had seen Honrin's face, the scars that disfigured it, her son looked like she did now, it pained her more than she would ever let on. Revulsion for herself welled up and she huffed in disgust.

The children were still small and less developed than they should be for their age but now they were out in the open she hoped that they would grow larger, become well again. Ky'Ry' was the only one that didn't gambol about with her sisters and brothers, she laid in Jace's lap, her sightless eyes focused on nothing at all whilst the arctic woman stroked her head gently. She looked sadly at the little smokey girl, she had survived yes but she had yet to show any sign of being able to see through her sapphire eyes.

Keldava was not in a good mood.

Up until now she had made a point of not visiting Rin and Dora in their new house. It was too close to the old house for her to feel comfortable – read to not fly into a rage and try to break Jace’s door down – but Rin had called earlier, and when she had ignored it she just called again and again, insistent on her attendance until she eventually howled in return and set off, grumbling and growling the whole way.

Keldava wondered what the hell it was that Rin wanted to talk to her about that couldn’t wait until they met while doing work around the town like they normally did. On her shoulder Devini pawed at her face and mewled insistently; alternating between the kneading motion and raspy licks from her tiny tongue in an attempt to cheer Keldava up. The kitten had no way of understanding why Keldava was so upset and angry – her understanding of high speech was limited and even if she could understand, it wasn’t something Keldava would talk about to her - but that didn’t stop her from trying to help.

Keldava’s mood, already spiralling downwards the closer she got to the house, gave up all hope and reached rock bottom when her eyes caught sight of the desiccated woman sitting outside her house. She didn’t respond to Jace’s presence in any way other than a tensing of her muscles and her lips curling up at the corners to show gleaming white teeth. Her pace slowed slightly and eyes softened when she caught sight of the playing puppies – her siblings – but she refused to let them force her into talking to her mother, and carried on walking, ignoring Devini’s meow of protest as she tried to peer curiously at the puppies.

Used to their weak mother as they were the children didn't notice when the grey woman closed her eyes and began to doze off, severely weakened by the ordeal that had destroyed her world and family. Her fur was still falling out in clumps of dead hair giving her a straggly half formed look too. Excited yipping woke her up and she peered through her blurry vision at who had stirred them up. With a soft bark though she called them back to her. The scent reached her nose before her eyes cleared and she immediately sat up straighter, ears alert. The children waddled back close and even Ky'Ry' lifted her head, sniffing at the air using one of her four available senses.

They weren't pleased with this decision, they wanted to meet the new stranger who smelled similar to them and their mother. She didn't know if Keldava would retaliate against her on her small young siblings. Finally her vision cleared and the brown blob turned into a detailed image of her daughter, with a small feline perched onto her shoulder. She swallowed down the bile that threatened to rise up her throat and spoke quietly without meeting Keldava's eyes, she was as she should be, shame faced and downtrodden,

"My daughter, how I have wronged you. I am sorry."
